It did not have a starter motor so the pilot has to manually turn the propeller in order to start the engine, so restarting the engine was definitely not an option. However, he had plenty of altitude to find a safe landing. These planes have been used by bush pilots for decades, it absolutely could have managed a safe emergency landing.

The pilot community is taught early and often that there is never just one factor that causes a plane to crash. Investigations take months or years and every angle is identified. In NTSB investigation reports, along with the primary cause, several contributing factors are also considered in the chain of events that lead to a crash. This is why pilots are very hesitant to jump to conclusions, even in seemingly open and shut cases. We take safety seriously, and if if we fail to consider every single contribution factor, it could very well mean that people may die in the future from a very preventable cause.

    A pilots take on this:
    1) correct, most pilots would be horrified to see another pilot walk to their plane with a parachute on, it would be like getting into a car with full crash gear. The only real aircraft you wear one in are military fast jets, aerobatic aircraft and prototype planes. His plane is a -piper j-3-, it is not an aerobatic aircraft
    2) a plane engine out like this just isn’t really gonna happen, but sadly they still do, however if an engine is going to die, there’s normally signs beforehand like sputters/rpm drops.
    3) there are checklists you do in any situation in a plane. The one any pilot should memorise and have on hand is the engine restart/hot start list. He didn’t seem to even try to reignite.
    4) he was at cruise and at a very high altitude. He had more then 20 minutes of gliding time by the looks of the altitude, subject to the cameras lens.
    5) granted flying a single engine over mountains is very dangerous, due to this very situation. On a mountain there’s not really many places to land, especially this plane which is not adapted for stol at all. However you can see in the video behind the planes tail flat land in the distance, which again subject to the cameras fisheye, looks to be well within gliding distance, which would allow him to save his $40,000 plane.
    6) the plane looks to be in rough shape, probably wouldn’t be surprised if it was borderline airworthy just so he could do this stunt.
He wasted a plane, endangered those on the ground, risked starting a bush fire, then made that crime into a video which plays on the deceased, then slapped a fucking sponsorship on it and uploaded
Please also refer to averagealex99 and Dylan prestage’s comments as well
Edit: as correctly point out in the replies, this plane is not a piper and is indeed a taylorcraft plane. It may not have an electric start motor meaning he wouldn’t be able to restart the engine normally, however there’s a trick pilots use called windmilling to restart the engine without electric start motors. This is taught in flight schools so he shouldn’t have an excuse as to why he didn’t try that
I’ll happily reply to any question because I do love flying and love talking about it.

In April 2022, the FAA determined that he had indeed abandoned the aircraft solely to film the crash. The FAA cited his opening of the cabin door prior to the purported engine failure; the lack of any attempt to execute an emergency landing, contact air traffic control, or restart the engine; and his personal unsupervised recovery of the onboard cameras and the aircraft wreckage, which he allegedly disposed of. The FAA revoked his private pilot certificate and ruled that he will not be permitted to apply for a new certificate for one year, stating that "your flight … [was] careless or reckless so as to endanger life or property of another".

I’m a CFII who flies a Taylorcraft all of the time. You’d never cruise that high in a Taylorcraft, the fuel lines weren’t connected (which you can see earlier in the video), to hear the airplane wasn’t even registered, there were no cameras on the inside of the cockpit showing him turning the fuel shutoff valve off, there was plenty of area to land (of which was an airport he could’ve easily made it to). If you have an engine failure the first thing you do is trim for best glide speed and then look for a landing spot. Then in the meantime you would call tower, approach, or guard to let them know your situation. You’d also be trying an aerial restart. Taylorcraft pilots (and like 99% of general aviation pilots except for aerobatics or warbird pilots) never wear parachutes, let alone skydiving parachutes like he was wearing. Normally you would be wearing an emergency parachute. It’s quite obvious that this guy did this for views and that it’s entirely fake. Hopefully the FAA and NTSB will get him for this and pull his license (provided he even had one). Ditching an airplane like that is incredibly irresponsible and dangerous. He could’ve killed people or damaged property. Also, he removed the cameras from the airplane before the investigators told him he could, so he’s facing serious charges for tampering with an ongoing investigation... hope my 2 cents on this helps anyone who is confused...

I am a Certified Flight Instructor, and there's just so many weird things happening here.
    1. The aircraft is a Taylorcraft which is a bush airplane. What this means is that the plane can land in a short distance. Like your car would probably take longer to stop than this airplane, so he could have landed on any somewhat flat area there. Also, this plane has crazy glide performance, and at the altitude he was at he could have turned back and glided back to any airport in the region.
    2. He hid the tail number of the airplane which says to me that he's trying to hide the registration of the plane.
    3. As a pilot, you're federally mandated to report any aircraft crash that results in the loss of the airplane, and it seems that he hasn't done this at all, and the first thing we've known about the crash is his video.
    4. Not only does this guy put on a parachute for what is a mundane flight, but also he wears a skydiving rig into the airplane with cameras. I've worn parachutes for aerobatics before, and they're light functional and without any place to attach a camera. Also the dude jumps out with a flipping selfie stick.
    5. He doesn't resort back to his training and go through the ABCDE's of engine failure. Fails to establish airspeed for best glide, fails to find best place to land, fails to go through the engine failure checklist and restart the engine, and fails to declare an emergency on his radio. Instead he decides that the best course of action is to ditch the aircraft and jump out.
Now I get that emergencies are very stressful and you can forget things, but either this pilot is extremely reckless and faked an accident or he is so deficient in his skills and knowledge that he should never fly again. However, I do have to say it's not every day you get to witness a plane crash from the prospective of the airplane and that was super dope.

Couple things (just a lowly PPL (ASEL) TW here): 2 - At least in my experience flying older aircraft similar to this (champs and cubs), those tiny tail numbers are not uncommon and I believe there is an FAA regulation that permits aircraft registered before a certain date to keep the smaller font. 3 - I think that he did report the crash to the NTSB, and there are unconfirmed reports that they are investigating. In any case, I and probably many others emailed the local FSDO after the crash, so he definitely on their radar. 5 - One thing that is 100% off and he has no excuse for is the lack of an ELT activation. If I realize that I can't restart the aircraft, the ELT is going on. The reason I find this so damning is that every aircraft has an ELT, and there's no way that he can claim a broken radio, no transponder, etc.

So the official dislike count for each video is currently not available for anyone, other than the creator of the video itself, UA-cam or a third party that is allowed to view them.
Since there is now no way to get the official count without being verified to do so, the extension does more or less what you said. Basicly general avation licence to fly small planes like this one.
Thank you Charlie for doing your research before making the video. You covered all the suspicions points.
    - GA Pilots almost never wear parachutes, it's very rare in general aviation to hear of someone wearing a parachute.
    - We didn't see footage inside the cockpit of the dashboard. We can't see the RPM, engines temperature. (Could have run out of fuel as fuel gauges on old planes are basicly trash. Also fuel line block wouldn't show up on the dash.) Still very suspicious we don't see inside view.
    - Restarting and trouble shooting - basically just yeeted himself out without set a nice gliding angle and seeing if he can restart the engine.
    - Bailing out, most pilots would attempt to land the plane with no power. Depending on the land it's very doable.
I wounder if he made any ATC (Air Traffic Control) calls?

You covered the biggest issues which alone make this obviously a crash intended to happen. Every time before I fly, because I'm a student pilot, I have to tell my instructor what I'm going to do if the engine fails at x altitude or facing x direction. I have spent weeks studying what to do in all sorts of emergency scenarios, and I have been told that even if the cockpit is on fire, you bring the plane down to the ground and land ASAP. There are 0 situations in which one would be justified in jumping out of a plane unless one had predetermined and planned a skydive before even takeoff.
My opinion is that the owner of the plane either had some major issues with the plane, and got some really good insurance, and decided they would be pulling an insurance scam and getting some views out of it while they were at it. I'd be surprised if this person manages to get even a drone in the air for at least a month, if ever again, let alone a plane. The FAA is one of the toughest and strictest organizations a civilian can mess with, and messing with the FAA is a guaranteed pain in the ass.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. First, with the fact that nobody flies with a parachute, and second, the fact that when you experience an engine failure in a single-engine, you’re immediate action is to pitch for best glide speed, Identify the best place to land, and attempt engine restart IAW your aircraft’s checklist. As you point out, we don’t see him do any of this. When it comes to his statement of “nowhere to land” that aircraft (I believe it’s a Taylorcraft A series) only requires about 500 feet to land on a bad day. He probably could have found somewhere to set it down especially because he has a lot of time at that altitude. Then there’s the aircraft he was flying. That is one of the cheapest airplanes you can buy used, as of right now there are 3 Taylorcraft on trade-a-plane (kind of like Craigslist for airplanes) all for less than 20k. Whistlindiesel actually bought one a few months ago just to destroy on his property. If you were going to intentionally crash a plane, that would be the most affordable one to do it in.

His door was open by about 2 inches before the engine cut out
He rocked the plane back and forth after the engine cut out, which only serves to make the propeller stop quicker, you can even see the propeller spins as the plane is going down
Why did he follow the plane in the air as it was crashing?
There looks to be flat ground aplenty that he could have landed on

Man, this guy really didn't think thru making this crash look legit and not staged:
-At 2:36 in the original video you can see the door looks entirely closed with the handle pointed straight down. At 2:43 when the engine just begins to slow down, you can see the door is already open, and the handle is rotated up towards the rear of the aircraft. Clearly getting ready to jump out before the engine is even all the way off (haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else)
-Boards aircraft with parachute already strapped on. Unheard of unless you plan to jump out the plane before you ever leave the ground.
-Has multiple other videos showing him flying without a parachute, contradicting claim he "always wears a parachute"
-Strange that he clearly had all these staged cameras and even one in the cockpit, yet there is no video of the failure or any troubleshooting. Very very odd not to show the moment of failure and ensuing drama, which if real would certainly have been included. Not just because it is certainly one of the most interesting / critical parts of any aviation crash, but would make for a better/more popular video.
-Pilots confirm there appear to be some possible landing spots in the video. Equally strange that none of this decision-making was included in the video. Again, he shows the process of freaking out because obviously the drama is good for the video, but doesn't show the process of talking with ATC and ultimately coming to the decision of ditching the aircraft.
-Has GoPro on a selfie stick, ready to film himself parachuting. Almost like he was prepped for one of his regular skydiving videos.
Compiled all this, saved the videos to google drive, and reported to the FAA. Hope this dude is never allowed to pilot again.

What I don’t understand about the landing part is that he is over mountains. Not just that but with that altitude he would of have to pick up a lot of speed. (I’m not a pilot so I assume the air breaks still work without the engine?)

@@MrFriendlyCsgoContent usually small planes like those don't have airbrakes in the technical sense. Where I fly, most pilots pretty much need a mountain rating when flying outside of gliding distance from the prairies. You would be taught the proper landing locations in an event like that when you take the course. I haven't yet, so I can't speak if that behalf. As for the altitude, some maneuvers are figure 8s and forward slips. Figure 8 is done when you are very high and have a good location in sight. Forward slip is where you point the nose of the plane away from the direction it is going to make a lot of drag. This is good if you are quite high but not enough for figure 8s. Flaps are used to increase glide angle and decrease approach speed. Usually you should land with full flaps using a soft field technique.

Yeah, when the engine stalls you don't just bail out of the plane. This was like the ideal scenario for a stalled engine to occur, besides being in the mountains. He was at a high altitude and would've had plenty of time to glide and troubleshoot engine issues. He's a pilot, he knows how to troubleshoot an engine failure. It's been a while since ground school, but if I recall correctly, you can: lower altitude, adjust prop speed, adjust fuel intake, increase or decrease speed, turn it off and on again, or literally anything else. One of the first things you learn before you can even fly a plane is how to troubleshoot and fix problems like this. It seems he didn't do any of the proper procedure. If he couldn't get the engine working, he still had plenty of time to look for a landing location and make an emergency landing, which is what any decent pilot would've done. Now over the mountains it would be hard to find a good place, but looking at his route and the video there looks to be places he could've, and plenty of trees to soften the blow. Hell, he probably could've glided back to a field. Again, he didn't even look for a place to set down. He didn't radio an emergency. He grabbed a go-pro and a parachute... Either this was on purpose or he didn't know enough to even be flying in the first place.

I'm a student pilot. One of the first things I bought was the checklist for my specific aircraft. It has start-up, run-up, takeoff, and all other procedures to act as a memory aid for pilots. It also has emergency procedures. Trevor should have reached for his checklist, instead of a Go-Pro and tried to restart the engine. If that fails, then it is almost always safer for people and property, whether on the ground or in the cabin, to make an emergency landing. Flight Instructors teach students what to look for and have them practice engine off landings at safe airports. I hope it's not a hoax, but there are a lot of factors weighing against Trevor. Thankfully, nobody got killed.

    • @bobjohn2000
      @bobjohn2000 2 роки тому +20

You shouldn't need to look at a checklist for emergency procedures. Get your CFI to quiz you on all of them, and review them in your head before every takeoff. Have a plan for: Engine failure on takeoff (Attempt to abort takeoff? Go straight and find a landing spot? What are good landing spots off of the extended centerline that you could make?), engine failure in flight (know exactly what you need to do to get the engine started again. Know at what altitude you will decide to restart or commit to crashing. Practice immediately getting to VBG after simulated engine failures), etc. All of the emergency procedures should be drilled into your head because when things go wrong, your brain turns to mush. On my third solo flight, quite a few years ago, I experienced detonation on climbout at 1500 feet. It's hard not to panic, and knowing exactly what to do will help you when shit hits the fan.
