My filters arrived from amazon today, intake as well as cabin filter. You gave this ole girl the confidence to tackle these two items. Woo hoo, and if all else fails....I’ll bribe my husband with a pint and a burger lol.
this was really well done ...wish I'd have seen it before I followed another video that didn't show or mention the tube slips on before the clips....I'll be able to buy another Smart with all the money in my swear jar....Thanks
thanks for the kind words. I enjoy doing them and will be starting on the Diesel Smart For Two Coupe videos next week. really chuffed I could be of help
Thanks for the video! I also had a hard time getting the hard shell off and out of the car because of the rubber hose- I ended up having to remove the hose all together and then putting it back on when ready to replace everything. Smells so much better in the car now, thanks! :)
Katie Bush yeah. It’s a fiddly little swine hahah. Have you changed the cabin filter for the climate controls? If there are smells this might help. I think I did a video for that ? All the best 🤓
I live in america or as some people call it "retardistan" where people think big SUV's and huge trucks are what you should drive and everyone hates the smart fortwo. I like my 2015 smart and I don't care what people think of it. I just changed my oil and changed my pads and rotors. I checked out your video before making any attempt on my own and I am glad I did because of that middle hidden clasp (seems to me it isn't needed) and I shall check it out and maybe make a tool of my own for it. Thank you for taking the time to make your video.
If you have a later model ('12ish) passion Gasoline, the corrugated tube is a little different. I recommend completely removing the tube before taking the intake box cover off, then when reassembling put the tube on first as you wrestle the cover back into place. Trust me it helps.
Aloha and my thanks as well for the video...it was a 10 minute job but I can already see replacing the cheap sharp edged hose clamps and the corrugated hose with a piece of silicone hose and good clamps will be a future project.
ExBuickRacer Aloha, and thank you for your kind words. You could replace the entire air ox with an after market conical type I guess but the air filters are changed that infrequently I couldn’t justify the $ personally. On the plus side it would improve the engine bay sound somewhat. 🤓
Weather as well as work load has been bad over in the colonies, so four weeks later I installed both filters, cabin as well as air filter. The cover took a little persuasion and some sweet talk “#$*ing but I was able to remove it. I didn’t need the coat hanger thingy as my hands are a wee bit smaller and I was able to reach under the hose to remove it as well as install it back. Without watching you remove the cover, I would have been afraid to break something, but with a little woman handling it, I was able to remove and install it without much bad words said. As for the filter, I must say it appeared to be OEM and was as if not more filthy than the cabin filter. I imagine besides piece of mind knowing it was installed, I’m looking forward to a little better fuel economy as well performance. Another project accomplished thanks to Smart ER, money saved, hmmmmmm maybe I’ll get my nails done lol, I’m going to need a Mani after wrestling with that cover. Thank you Gareth for all your help, it’s well appreciated.
Smart E.R. Gareth my dear Guru, I believe at 30,000 miles replacing spark plugs is a necessity. That my dear would be a video much needed and required for us Smart Fortwo newbie. I’m one not afraid to chip my nail polish and since my Smart “named Mighty Little” is approaching 27000 miles 26547 to be exact, I would watch with baited breath. I’m going to change my oil today and filter, I’ll hit you up later and let you know how that is going. It’s a lovely day in the colonies “New York” will post the results on the Smart ER oil change video. Warmest regards....Paula
I can't get the filter cover to sit back on correctly, I'll get the feet in the back locked in but the front is at an angle where the clips are so far away from being able to latch. Losing my mind over here lol
Lol after I wrote this I went out and retried, got it on, only bummer is it didn't fix my engine light from being on, now I get to replace the fuel injectors smh. Did the spark plugs not long ago so I'm praying they aren't faulty I'd hate to have to do that all over again.
@smarte.r.1450 yeah Mercedes themselves did them so I'm hoping that's not the issue. Trying to work out in my head what could be going on but I'm going in circles at this point. Ready to ship it off and let the pros deal with it. No one under 100 miles is even able to touch it that's why I've been tearing it apart myself. Just replaced the motor mount and alternator, now this.
Valantine Womack have a look at the front of Black smart car. (This is a smart 451 model) if the headlamps and body panels look the same.. then yes.Its exactly the same.. if it is the earlier shape. Then I'm sorry. I don't know. I haven't worked on these older versions. Reply back here if it's different and I'll find some way of helping you .
Air filters aren’t critical to prolonging engine life. It aids a cleaner burn of fuel I guess. Also it’s mileage dependant. My cars never do more than about 4K miles a year. Oil filter is a good shout. But if you’re going to all that trouble you might as well do an oil change also. Appreciate the thought and comments. I’ve literally just done a new video on an oil and filter change for the newer 453 car. 😂😂
Trust me it's not this fast or easy. Two me over an hr giving up coming back trying again. Getting it out isn't to bad but putting it back on it very very hard. The rubber hose is very stiff. His looked like it moved pretty easy but my car has I think 80k most stop and go traffic and ilding a lot.
Hi Sam, I think its shows I did Struggle getting the new filter in and the hose was stiff.. but maybe yours has been changed sometime being more new and less felxibility.. Warm the engine up first, use gloves and I think I mention in the video be firm with it... its quite a thick piece of hose... good luck
@@CarlitoBrigante-qs3ls where are you in the world? These cars are not the easiest to work on admittedly however, they have a loyal fan base. As a city car in congested areas they fit the bill perfectly. Emissions law as ridiculous as May or May not feel they are… these help people get about. They are fun to drive…. I would hate to daily a Lamborghini or Ferrari. It’s horses for courses and I love em. So much I’ve had seven.
It seems a lot more stiff than it is really. I did this again last weekend.. it was easy when you've done it once.. but that little wire tip to get to the middle clasp is really useful.

Well done, very descriptive and entertaining commentary! Good camera angles as well.

I'm so sorry I missed this comment.. I visit my son in the USA twice a year and in GS/NC & SC I have never seen a Smart For Two there

A smart without a steering wheel 😳 in Belgium we have smarts with a steering wheel 😊😜 excepth that nice video 👍
Hi, erm i’ve had a smart for over 2 years now and i would love to know what that yellow cover near the air filter is for ? Could you help us please !
send me a photo please .. gareth.rogers@live.co.uk

just a clarification this video is for the engine's air filter...
Yes. Air filter change 🤓
Yes. Air filter change 🤓
Yes. Air filter change
Gareth Rogers thanks!
Could you please do a video on how to replace the spring in a fuel door of a 2008 smart car thanks
Great video, any differences for a Diesel air filter change?
+MISTER hi! thanks for the kind words..
no difference at all on the diesel Air Filter change.
I can't get the filter cover to sit back on correctly, I'll get the feet in the back locked in but the front is at an angle where the clips are so far away from being able to latch. Losing my mind over here lol
Send me a photo on my SMART E.R. Facebook page I’ll take a look. Make sure there are a few angles

Same issue here. Spend a full hour so far working on putting it back together. Did you get the project finished?
Right next to the air box housing it has a big plastic box .. What is that for ?? Is that Necessary??
William Giesecke I can't see where you mean? Can you screen shot it and maybe circle it and email the picture to smart_er.uk1@yahoo.com
nice and useful video, thanks
dwight sarti thanks for taking the time to be kind. Not a lot of that about. I really appreciate it. Stay safe. Glad you found it useful
Would this be the same for 2006 Passion?

Tip tip: change out new engine air filter and oil filter in between oil changes for better engine life.

This is one of the most ridiculous cars I have ever worked on
Hahahaha. It’s an acquired taste. Can you be more specific?
@@smarte.r.1450 Thanks for the video, just a ridiculous car, should've been named "Dumb car" it's like Lego, no jacking point just pathetic.

Ah german engeneers why not make bigger cover to gain full reach to the engine
think its a stressed member after that point
Such a shit design putting it there, the back clips are almost impossible to get in!
There surely is an easier engineering solution to opening it but, just need a decent thick leverage tool. 🙏
