why is everyone in a slump or so over recycled romance plots lately 😭 excited for the horror video ! 'pretty girls' is the best creepy thriller i've read !
Honestly I think the speed at which books are being published and promoted also makes it difficult to find the ones you will truly love so I get it girl 💜
If you are in a mystery/horror mood, I would highly recommend The Sun Down Hotel by Simone St. James. There are ghosts haunting the motel and a mystery surrounding missing women in the 1980s.
OKAY SO, I read southern Book club’s guy to slaying vampires for my literal Book club and if brought about the most entertaining and fun discussion! The thriller ask that kept me on the edge of my seat, but there are times where it gives a handmaids tale vibe which is why I feel like it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. There is gore and SA in the book, but there’s also so much good PLOT and hefty imagery that I think kept me and my book club so invested. We loved it, it was my favorite book We read in Book club last year.
yesss about the copy and paste, that is why i haven't read every "romance" that comes out lately and have been picky about my reads. i want to consistently love the genre. it's rare that i pick up a single book romance tbh unless i reallllly want to read it
Misery is so so so good!! King makes this story so gripping while only having two characters, I was on the edge of my seat half the time while reading it!
Now that you’re entering your horror/thriller era, may I recommend to you: -Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson (horror) -Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (thriller)⭐️ -What Moves the Dead by T Kingfisher (horror) -Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney (thriller)⭐️ -How To Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix (horror) -Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister (thriller) -A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (YA mystery) ⭐️ ⭐️= 5 stars to me personally 🫶
I hadn't realised that I'd basically stopped reading contemporary romance (which used to be my most read genre) until you said you were getting tired of it. Me too!! I've been reading mysteries, fantasy, scifi, historical romance, a few classics even - just no contemporary romance!! Also Southern Bookclubs Guide to Slaying Vampires was literally my favourite book I read last year. It's so amazing!!! 💛
I am in a slump also, but you are absolutely right about not forcing books just to check it off. I have found that I am not forcing myself to read anything I don't want to and I just randomly choose books I want to read. Amazingly, I can finish a book in a day and feel really good about reading again. Good to see you switching up your genres. I really hope you love Misery. That book started my Stephen King obsession. Would love to buddy-read Mother Thing with you!!! This is going to be a great month! 😄
As a new romance reader it is so weird to see how everyone at the moment is sick and tired of romance books and I am sitting here with almost 100 read books this year in April (!!!). I have always been an avid reader but I mostly read historial fiction, horror, classics. Since I started getting into romance I have been reading like crazy and I can't stop, even if I see the points everyone is making about the speed and the copy-paste feel of these books. I am still waiting to get tired of them (haha) and start picking up other genres again. Looooove that you want to read horror, Heather, it is one of my favourite genres. I definitely recommend Grady Hendrix, I loved The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and How to Sell a Haunted House by him; also Stephen King has a lot of good ones: Pet Cemetery, The Shining. Hope you love them :)
omggg i 100% get the romance rut!!! i started reading literary fiction which i loved so i hope you can find a genre to add to your repetoire!!! def started missing romance after a few books especially with summer coming up
Super excited for the horror video!! I’ve also just started diving into the genre and I’m excited to get some recs because I too don’t handle gore very well. 🥴
Have you read "Hostile" & "Too Hostile" by Nicole Dykes? They are so good! It's MM, both the Brothers in the books are adopted (and were in foster care) by AMAZING parents. The found family is SO GOOD
I’m in a slump too. Romance with a murder mystery may be good? Veronica speedwell series is so great! Just read the heiress by Rachel Hawkins which is the first of her books I’ve really liked because it has more mystery than thrill. Thrillers aren’t really for me but murder mysteries are. Also maybe try a non-fiction? The Age of magical over thinking was so awesome!
I just thrifted the southerns bookclub guide to slaying vampires, so I plan on reading it this month ! I've never read horror and also getting a little sick of romance.
I loved southern book clubs guide to slaying vampires but if you don’t do great with gore at all this is one of his more gorey books I’ve read. Just a heads up:)
Best wishes with what you choose to read. I hope you get some great stories. I'm currently up to page 881 of the Count of Monte Cristo. Did got some way to go. Very different feeling to be with a book so long. Happy reading.
I’m waiting to break out of my romance mood because I love reading ALL genres but tell me how this year I’ve been wanting romance mostly?? I’ve been slumpy, I need a break, maybe I should take note and try other things because totally agreed, despite loving it, romance gets repetitive after a while
I read misery by Stephen King and I ended up not finishing it because it was like one of those books that a story in the story and I liked the actual plot of it. I didn’t like that we kept flashing into the book that he was writing. I didn’t enjoy that part of it but like a book that I would pick up and finish.❤❤
i just finished 'seeing red' and there is in fact a line where he says he's seeing red 🙁but it was a 3.5 for me and i liked it better than the first one!
I reeeeally struggled with How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix, it gave more silly vibes than anything scary lol made me hesitant to read any his others tbh I think I also struggled to get into the narrators character voices in the audiobook, that could’ve been my problem lol Really excited for a horror vlog though!! Motherthing has been on my tbr for forever!
The southern bookclub' guide is soooooooo good.. it's a bit slow so maybe that's why people don't like it. But for me it was perfect. I would highly, highly, highly recommend my best friend's exorcism, it changed my brain chemistry it was that good.
Did you read the other books in the boys of Tommen series? It’s an emotional journey but it will not feel like a cut and paste reading experience if you haven’t.
My mother, let me read this book a long time ago.(The exorcism of amy rose). the true story. It's not like Stephen King's short book. It's not like the movie. The church. Took the book off the shelves decades ago. Due to its content. I'm a grown ass man , Reading that book made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. After I finished it I gave it back to my mother, I haven't picked it up since that was a long time ago.
UGH girl don't do it with the wrong family...it's so predictable and boring and i just don't want you to waste your time. and go into grady hendrix knowing it's social commentary and that should frame it a lil better for you.
Glad to hear we’re all in a romance slump.
why is everyone in a slump or so over recycled romance plots lately 😭 excited for the horror video ! 'pretty girls' is the best creepy thriller i've read !
Heather definitely needs Pretty Girls to take her out of this slump!
okay me too 😭😭 i thought i was the only one. i think for me in particular i’m just over the same storyline over and over again. 😭😭
Pretty Girls is probably the scariest book I've ever read, honestly
I agree and there is so many releases coming out but all the tropes are the same:(
I need Mariana Zapata to magically come out with another book cause that'll get me out of my slump of romance too
The coat is giving paddington. I love it.
Honestly I think the speed at which books are being published and promoted also makes it difficult to find the ones you will truly love so I get it girl 💜
literally can watch heather watch paint dry and I would be happy to do so
I actually really enjoyed southern book club!! It was the perfect amount of cheesy + creepy + camp etc. I hope you love it
If you are in a mystery/horror mood, I would highly recommend The Sun Down Hotel by Simone St. James. There are ghosts haunting the motel and a mystery surrounding missing women in the 1980s.
I DnF’d that, but in its defense I read before bed and it was to creepy for me.
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires is one of my favorite books! It's truly so much fun! I hope you enjoy it!
Local Woman Missing is so unexpectedly fresh!!!!
Agreed!! I didn’t even realize it was a horror title. But I love a vampire book 😂
