@@napraznicul the golf r is fitted with a fully functional 4wd system that works whenever the car detects slip at the front wheels, in which case the car will send the appropriate amount of power to the rear. May I also say that the new golf r has been known to be much less prone to understeer than it’s already fast predecessor. It’s a very well balanced and capable car

To turn on launch control on on the S4 with the faster shifts, you need to hold the ESC button to fully turn it off. So ESC off and Dynamic. Your test needs to be redone...
Upgraded from an S3 (Golf R) to an S4 and I'm not looking back....I don't care if the Golf -R is a bit faster, my S4 is a much nicer car. If I was 25 again, I would definitely choose the Golf-R....but a simple Stage 1 tune changes all of this.
Found and bought a 2022 s3 while looking for a golf r. Now a year later, im looking to trade for an s4. Though i haven't driven one yet im thinking the 4 will fix the short comings of the 3 i have. Better refinement and stability from a longer wheel base. Like you said, not in my 20's anymore.

MK8 GOLF R has much different feel than S3. very different cars. R is much better and practical car to own and on the track too. Now S4 is more of a GT car cruiser. If you need more space, go for it, but make sure you buy the S4 Estate. S4 Sedan is limited in loading dimensions. You need a hatch GOLF R RS3 Hatch in ROW or S4 Estate ROW. GOLF R is a drivers cars, S4 is not.
Just sold my 2020 S4 technik at 67000km with this exact blue, car was rock solid and had zero issues.. loved the balance of power, handling, comfort and MPG, even better I got it almost 7k off MSRP brand new... Will be taking a new MK8 R DSG home soon, cant wait..
I like both of these cars very much. I currently wouldn't trade my beloved Alfa Romeo Giulia for either of these, but I have a big soft spot for both Volkswagen and Audi. I think that the obvious takeaway here is that Audi needs to go on a weight loss program. I'd choose the Golf R, not so much because of its performance at the limit, but because the hatchback format is so much more utilitarian.
Ok let's be honest here. The only real thing these u drag races show and prove is that Kurt is the superior driver than the other guy. Whomever it happens to be. He can take a car that lost and win the race, or he can take a car that won and destroy the other guy. They need to find someone's who on par with him. Hands down very important video This hatchback fits as much boxes as palisade with the rear sits down of course and that is the selling point for me . I can haul my things daily and as an underdog wakes up and surprises every single car except Bugatti and maybe a couple of Ferraris and a pagani

@@rob198 many have run low 12’s at over 110mph, it’s not I’ll uncommon. Not saying everyone will run those times, but most are able to in the right conditions and with a proper run. There’s more to running good times than just engaging launch control and letting the car do everything
before watching - okay so there should not be much room between these two car. If I had to pick a winner, the golf R's engine being slightly less over the center line of the front wheels (if I recall the layout correctly), will give it less under steer at the end and slightly more cornering grip. giving it the edge. but these two should basically be running even unless the S4 weighs way more than I thought.
What be the point really, yeah head to head but one car is lighter, and a trick rear diff, the other doesn't. You would not even need a race to find out. Civic type r or even like a mustang high output would be cool
Gotta say your 1/4 mile times are odd. This has the golf running it about .7s slower which is massive to be honest. Trap speed is close (usually around 110). Prepped surface shouldn’t matter much as it doesn’t really spin anyway. Just an odd thing I noticed is all.

The golf r has been tested as soon as launch happened with various outlets and no one else has had those kinds of results. It would have been huuuge news all over the groups and Reddit and the like and it wasn’t at all. It’s been shown as a best of 12.4-6 pretty routinely. (For DSG). Sam’s channel is a joke. Good guy but his races are completely nonsense. No one uses correct drive modes, they don’t lock it in manual on roll races and let it downshift and all sorts of wonky crap. Worst possible reference for racing on YT. The m240 has been pitted against it on many channel and by no means am I saying it’s not faster. It is, no argument from me there. But it’s not like a HUGE blowout. The R keeps up for a while and just falls out towards the end. It definitely loses some tenths. As far as over boost… you’re just talking about launch control. That’s not “over” boost, it’s simply preload. I literally have a tuned FBO 8R. I’ve logged and monitored boost, IATs, you name it on all sorts of conditions. It’s not over boosting.
I’m over 60-I’m afraid the Golf is too youthful for me. It would look like the old guy trying to appear cool. This is why the S4 has a place. Albeit a slower place.
I've considered trading my b9 s5 for the new R but I really prefer the goodies and nannies on audi and with some bucks can be a sub 4 0-60 and 11s all day .

A better one would be S4 vs M340i or C43, G70. I know they've been done before, but not with the turn and back. I agree with other comments that the Golf R vs S3 would be better. As for the comment being surprised I'm not. Two very different cars, one a hot hatch, while the other is the luxury sports sedan that also happens to have true launch control and a dsg, then add the power to weight ratio. Now I went from a 2028 R to a 22 S4, and love the S4, for the amount of driving I do is way more comfortable, and smooth. As for the comments that the S4 wasn't a ringer, without being there hard to say, BUT 0-60 in the S4 most get around 4.2, while the R is just slightly faster, so I'm not sure how much the outcome would change no matter what the vehicle is. Now I don't pay much attention to 0-60 since in the real world for me doesn't really affect my decision making, both are fast.
2:41 Your experience is not that correct. "ESC Sport" still cut engine power if you floor it in a race like that (you don't want that to happen). Should turn the whole thing off and you may win.
Just my 2 cents being an S4 owner, i have ran much faster 0-60 and quarters at 2,000 feet elevation at 80 degrees with a DA of 3500+ on 91 octane. 4.2 0-60 and a quarter of 12.5 when mine was stock, so i think the reason this S4 seemed slow, was a driver error. 1, turning ESC and trac controll all the way off does not make the car slower or less responsive, ive tested that many times. Turning it all the way off is what enables AMAX shifting for the trans, so this wasnt a correct run. 2, not sure because it doesnt show it, they may have not physically launched correctly by either missing the upswing of RPMs or didnt wait until the S4 builds full boost. Either way, there are many examples of B9.5s taking the Golf r in straight runs, contrary to this video. Maybe re run with a better launch setup after practice and turning systems all the way off will return a different result, because 13+ quarters on the 2022 S4 isnt at all what it can actually do. Run it again with ESC off engaging AMAX, and the outcome will be different.
Idk it’s the same conditions for the Golf R. I have experimented with ESC sport and off at a race track and made no difference at all. I have also ran a 12.61 at 108.7 mph personally in not ideal conditions all stock obviously plus baby seats and some other stuff. Some other guys got a 12.5 and even 12.4 out of the MK8 R that I know. However I do think it should have been closer race. I think the B9 might be a bit faster for some reason? No idea
@@mqbr22 Either way, AMAX yields much faster shift, amd he didnt have it engaged. Needs to be re run for actual results because 13+ is a horrible time compared to what it should actually run.
@@MeatloafMelvin Both cars ran equally terrible times. They got a 13.1 with the R. Like how is that even possible to do besides high elevation. Also could have 91 octane in both cars. This test wasn’t about 1/4 mile times anyways.
Kind of embarrassing since its basically an S3 vs S4 and the theoretically superior platform loses. S4 should be near 400hp with rs4 near 500. Without character in the 6 cyl it should at least have power. I dont see a point in any Audi that isnt the 5cyl or an 8cyl+ now, such a strange line of cars now.
As an owner of a B9 S4 (like this one), I’m surprised. It has superior power, but I guess the weight penalty is too much…that or they just happened to not get a ringer. Something tells me this was unique to these particular examples.
The Golf R is significantly lighter with a dual clutch transmission. That's actually more than enough to make up for the small power advantage that the S4 has.
Unfortunately, this is the truth. That golf also puts down around 310/315 hp to the wheels. I don’t know if the S4 is also rated that way or not but the golf is definitely more performance oriented. The AWD system in it is the same as the RS3, the normal S line does not have it.
At 67k your paying over 70k for a car that cant beat a 45, practically 50k car. The are both too expensive. But the S4 disappoints the most. Im hearing the 2.9 has had a few problems too. The last great s4 was the manual 2016. They have fallen behind the competition with this new one. At this price your better off spending a little more for the x drive m3.
67k is fully optioned out and my guess, a markup. Bought My S4 brand new with added options for 53k, so im not sure why it was almost 70k in this video. As far as issues, i havent heard of any major issues with the EA839 3.0 or 2.9 engines. In fact, just the opposite. Many people have dozens of pulls and testing on S4's with over 700whp on the stock block, and with just bolt on parts and a hybrid turbo, they run 9s. So, while the R may be a little faster in a u drag, actual straight line speed im almost positive the S4 takes it. Its also 500lbs heaver and a luxuary sedan, not a lightweight hatch lol. Not only that, but im calling BS on the whole turning ECS and traction off lowers the responsiveness of the car. I did alot of testing back when my S4 was stock and it leaves way harder with everything turned off. Every single performance oriented company recommends to launch that way. Turning it all off does not allow the ECU or TCU to limit power to protect from wheelspin, and unless you are on a very terrible surface, you arent breaking all 4 wheels loose on a 3800lbs car with 255s on stock power levels. Just my 2 cents and what ive seen.
The S4 is a great all-rounder and only lags behind the M340i and C43 and also cheaper than them both, it’s above everything else in this segment, which is pretty competitive.

I have a manual GTI (2023)... had an S4 (manual supercharger) a few years ago. the Audi was nice, but the gti (just a plain gti) is definitely more fun and faster than the S4. I wish you would do these with manuals although that places much more emphasis on driver skill. Im not into automatics.. at all.. dont care how much faster they are.

At least in this race, the pesky 3rd pedal didn't "ruin" the acceleration and there was no poor shifting unlike that last video where some skills were lacking...but other than push a pedal, turn the wheel, there wasn't much drama...
The Audi is way too heavy for a car that size. It weighs almost identical to a Chevy SS, which is a larger car with a huge V8 engine that has more than twice the displacement of the 3.0 Audi.

@@napraznicul I’ve read and re-read this multiple times and still can’t figure out what this talk of two terms is that you speak of. I own an S3 and great as it is it definitely understeers. Audi wanted to make the new gen handle more balanced so instead of moving the engine behind the front axle and over driving the rear diff they played around with torque vectoring so it feels pushed out of corners from the rear. Hardly comedy but to each their own. 🤷🏼♂️

What an awful representation of the b9 S4, it runs 12s stock. They didn't even use amax launch on the ZF.
Same with the golf r, they run low 12’s stock and trap 10mph higher than they did in the video

I don’t know what you mean though by not “matching expectations” on roll races. They trap 110 pretty consistently and actually hang with m240s and amg hatch pretty well on a roll. I mean it does exactly what you’d think.
@@layne4376 I’ll revisit early car wow when I have a chance but I definitely don’t recall that and even IF they show that and they’re the only one, they could include a rollout or something. The golf r has been tested as soon as launch happened with various outlets and no one else has had those kinds of results. It would have been huuuge news all over the groups and Reddit and the like and it wasn’t at all. It’s been shown as a best of 12.4-6 pretty routinely. (For DSG).
Sam’s channel is a joke. Good guy but his races are completely nonsense. No one uses correct drive modes, they don’t lock it in manual on roll races and let it downshift and all sorts of wonky crap. Worst possible reference for racing on YT. The m240 has been pitted against it on many channel and by no means am I saying it’s not faster. It is, no argument from me there. But it’s not like a HUGE blowout. The R keeps up for a while and just falls out towards the end. It definitely loses some tenths.
As far as over boost… you’re just talking about launch control. That’s not “over” boost, it’s simply preload. I literally have a tuned FBO 8R. I’ve logged and monitored boost, IATs, you name it on all sorts of conditions. It’s not over boosting.

I've considered trading my b9 s5 for the new R but I really prefer the goodies and nannies on audi and with some bucks can be a sub 4 0-60 and 11s all day .

A better one would be S4 vs M340i or C43, G70. I know they've been done before, but not with the turn and back. I agree with other comments that the Golf R vs S3 would be better. As for the comment being surprised I'm not. Two very different cars, one a hot hatch, while the other is the luxury sports sedan that also happens to have true launch control and a dsg, then add the power to weight ratio. Now I went from a 2028 R to a 22 S4, and love the S4, for the amount of driving I do is way more comfortable, and smooth. As for the comments that the S4 wasn't a ringer, without being there hard to say, BUT 0-60 in the S4 most get around 4.2, while the R is just slightly faster, so I'm not sure how much the outcome would change no matter what the vehicle is. Now I don't pay much attention to 0-60 since in the real world for me doesn't really affect my decision making, both are fast.
Was golf R on drift mode or Nurburgring mode? If on drift mode it would prob have completed the hairpin turn even quicker.
2:41 Your experience is not that correct. "ESC Sport" still cut engine power if you floor it in a race like that (you don't want that to happen). Should turn the whole thing off and you may win.

Just my 2 cents being an S4 owner, i have ran much faster 0-60 and quarters at 2,000 feet elevation at 80 degrees with a DA of 3500+ on 91 octane. 4.2 0-60 and a quarter of 12.5 when mine was stock, so i think the reason this S4 seemed slow, was a driver error.
1, turning ESC and trac controll all the way off does not make the car slower or less responsive, ive tested that many times. Turning it all the way off is what enables AMAX shifting for the trans, so this wasnt a correct run.
2, not sure because it doesnt show it, they may have not physically launched correctly by either missing the upswing of RPMs or didnt wait until the S4 builds full boost.
Either way, there are many examples of B9.5s taking the Golf r in straight runs, contrary to this video.
Maybe re run with a better launch setup after practice and turning systems all the way off will return a different result, because 13+ quarters on the 2022 S4 isnt at all what it can actually do.
Run it again with ESC off engaging AMAX, and the outcome will be different.
Idk it’s the same conditions for the Golf R. I have experimented with ESC sport and off at a race track and made no difference at all. I have also ran a 12.61 at 108.7 mph personally in not ideal conditions all stock obviously plus baby seats and some other stuff. Some other guys got a 12.5 and even 12.4 out of the MK8 R that I know. However I do think it should have been closer race. I think the B9 might be a bit faster for some reason? No idea
@@mqbr22 Either way, AMAX yields much faster shift, amd he didnt have it engaged. Needs to be re run for actual results because 13+ is a horrible time compared to what it should actually run.
@@MeatloafMelvin Both cars ran equally terrible times. They got a 13.1 with the R. Like how is that even possible to do besides high elevation. Also could have 91 octane in both cars. This test wasn’t about 1/4 mile times anyways.
Agreed S4 did not have amax engaged on the ZF, the b9s run 12s stock.
Kind of embarrassing since its basically an S3 vs S4 and the theoretically superior platform loses. S4 should be near 400hp with rs4 near 500. Without character in the 6 cyl it should at least have power. I dont see a point in any Audi that isnt the 5cyl or an 8cyl+ now, such a strange line of cars now.

As an owner of a B9 S4 (like this one), I’m surprised. It has superior power, but I guess the weight penalty is too much…that or they just happened to not get a ringer. Something tells me this was unique to these particular examples.
The Golf R is significantly lighter with a dual clutch transmission. That's actually more than enough to make up for the small power advantage that the S4 has.
Unfortunately, this is the truth. That golf also puts down around 310/315 hp to the wheels. I don’t know if the S4 is also rated that way or not but the golf is definitely more performance oriented. The AWD system in it is the same as the RS3, the normal S line does not have it.

At 67k your paying over 70k for a car that cant beat a 45, practically 50k car. The are both too expensive. But the S4 disappoints the most. Im hearing the 2.9 has had a few problems too. The last great s4 was the manual 2016. They have fallen behind the competition with this new one. At this price your better off spending a little more for the x drive m3.
67k is fully optioned out and my guess, a markup. Bought My S4 brand new with added options for 53k, so im not sure why it was almost 70k in this video.
As far as issues, i havent heard of any major issues with the EA839 3.0 or 2.9 engines. In fact, just the opposite. Many people have dozens of pulls and testing on S4's with over 700whp on the stock block, and with just bolt on parts and a hybrid turbo, they run 9s.
So, while the R may be a little faster in a u drag, actual straight line speed im almost positive the S4 takes it. Its also 500lbs heaver and a luxuary sedan, not a lightweight hatch lol.
Not only that, but im calling BS on the whole turning ECS and traction off lowers the responsiveness of the car. I did alot of testing back when my S4 was stock and it leaves way harder with everything turned off. Every single performance oriented company recommends to launch that way. Turning it all off does not allow the ECU or TCU to limit power to protect from wheelspin, and unless you are on a very terrible surface, you arent breaking all 4 wheels loose on a 3800lbs car with 255s on stock power levels.
Just my 2 cents and what ive seen.
The S4 is a great all-rounder and only lags behind the M340i and C43 and also cheaper than them both, it’s above everything else in this segment, which is pretty competitive.
@@drivescene6747 It all depends on testing too. Ive seen other reviewers where the S4 is faster in a standing quarter than the AMG.

I have a manual GTI (2023)... had an S4 (manual supercharger) a few years ago. the Audi was nice, but the gti (just a plain gti) is definitely more fun and faster than the S4. I wish you would do these with manuals although that places much more emphasis on driver skill. Im not into automatics.. at all.. dont care how much faster they are.

At least in this race, the pesky 3rd pedal didn't "ruin" the acceleration and there was no poor shifting unlike that last video where some skills were lacking...but other than push a pedal, turn the wheel, there wasn't much drama...
The Audi is way too heavy for a car that size. It weighs almost identical to a Chevy SS, which is a larger car with a huge V8 engine that has more than twice the displacement of the 3.0 Audi.
DOHC engine with turbo and all wheel drive add some weight. Plus it’s German so build quality and general engineering complexity is more substantial.
@@ALMX5DP which is why they break constantly and some how get worse gas mileage too. I can see why the Mustang sells so well in Germany now. It's cheaper, faster, and more reliable than this junk. It sucks in snow though.

@@napraznicul I’ve read and re-read this multiple times and still can’t figure out what this talk of two terms is that you speak of. I own an S3 and great as it is it definitely understeers. Audi wanted to make the new gen handle more balanced so instead of moving the engine behind the front axle and over driving the rear diff they played around with torque vectoring so it feels pushed out of corners from the rear.
