  • The Volkswagen Golf GTI and Hyundai Elantra N are the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked hot hatches on Edmunds, respectively. In this video, Lauren McCay from Edmunds heads out to the desert with the 2022 VW Golf GTI and 2022 Hyundai Elantra N to see which one of these hot hatchbacks comes out on top in our latest U-Drags race. Lauren reports on which hatch won the drag race and compares the Elantra N's and Golf GTI's 0-60 time, top speeds and horsepower. Can the original hot hatch Golf GTI stay one step ahead of the newer Elantra N? Lauren answers this and much more in our latest video in our new series we dubbed "U-Drags." It's the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI vs. 2022 Hyundai Elantra N.
What is a U-Drag race? A U-Drag race consists of both cars heading down the track like a standard drag race, then braking hard, flipping around and then heading back.

Good race. A couple of things to say. First, the GTI, with adaptive dampers, can go 3 levels above sport mode if you go to custom mode.. essentially track mode. Second, you can create a shortcut to access to turn the ECS off Swipe down on Home Screen. Hold the “house” home button for 3 seconds and you can move the ECS off option to Home Screen so you only have to swipe down in the future and do it in 2 clicks. I’ve raced GTIs in my EN DCT and gapped them by quite a bit. Using the N mode in auto isn’t where you get all the power. Using the N mode and paddle shifting in manual is where you can really push it. This race was determined by the drivers. Not the cars.

People love to slag VW for its alleged reliability issues, although I've had six from the Mk1 all the way through the Mk6 and none of them were money pits. People just hate the fact that they're as popular as they are and when you're on top you're a target. But as good as the Koreans are getting, they've yet to truly trump these hyper Golfs. The all around space/utility, comfort, interior quality and materials and (yes, you do have to push them now...) - the potential for serious giggles when driven with gusto. They simply tick every box and this is why they are the benchmark. Are they perfect? Hell no. Are they the fastest car from light to light. Nope. The best fuel economy of any hot hatch? I'd say not. But they simply do everything so well, it's pretty much the only car you need.
Not to mention that the Germans are notoriously famous for underrating their actual horsepower numbers. If the difference in these two cars was as the numbers show, this shouldn't have been the outcome. Even the base GTI, especially with the DSG, is pretty damn quick. The R is almost stupid for the segment.

@@Kamukix if it does last 20 seconds, it would be a waste to only use it on the way back. Might have to be on the brakes earlier on the out portion but that still means it’s getting you there faster.

@@ALMX5DP right, unless you're at a deficit to the other car under braking. If one car is 'better' than the other car at braking and you add even more speed to the car with worse braking...then you've now made that car have to brake even sooner and further away than the other car it was already losing to. So yes you had more speed going in which might give you another tenth or two back....but you will likely lose that or more under braking since you were already slightly behind. If you just use that once you hook up coming out of the corner then you have a nice long uninterrupted boost for that 1/4 mile back to the start line. 👍
Also using it early means not only a problem for braking but also a problem for accelerating out of the corner.

@@Kamukix so you’re saying it’s better to have less horsepower on the way out? I can’t see a situation where one would purposefully want to limit power in any racing scenario. And it’s only 10hp so it’s not like it’s going to change the entire dynamic of the car. Use less throttle pedal if you feel you need to modulate but have it there if you want to use it and don’t leave something off the table that could be an advantage.

100% agree with that. The NGS should have been used right after the launch once the car hooked. I don’t take the videos too seriously since these guys don’t own the cars and know the nuances of them. That was completely evident with the second guy not getting launch control to work. You have to quickly floor the accelerator to get it to engage. He probably pushed the gas too slow and that’s why it didn’t work. That alone lost the second race. I’ve never driven a GTI, but as an N owner it’s hard to believe the GTI has better brakes than the N. All the track reviews and just from personally driving an N, the brakes are phenomenal and incredibly strong. But whatevs, they seemed to be trying to prove something and they found a way to do that with some questionable approaches.

My bet? Stick a fork in the GTI, it's done.
If I recall the Hyundai is better in acceleration, braking, and cornering speed.

@@roguedogx haha I thought the EXACT same thing when I saw the title. The video totally shook me, then I went and checked the multiple magazine tests to look at some of the acceleration times because I thought the N was significantly quicker and realized I was wrong and they're actually very close to each other. I also forgot about the Savagegeese race when they compared the GTi, N, WRX, and Si...and the GTi beat the N there as well even on its trash tires the GTi came with. (the N crushed it around the full road course but again they mentioned the trash tires the GTi came on and that it would be seconds per lap faster with a real set of tires on it)
I think I keep mentally comparing the N to the mk7 GTi which would be a bigger gap, and on top of that I keep comparing the GTi to the mk7.5 R which is a significant gap. We have both the mk7.5 R and a mk8 GTi so I've got lots of experience in both (manuals, the dual clutches are significantly quicker even). I have thought about buying an N because I think it's an AMAZING car and a great package, but both VW cars are superior daily drivers so it's a toss up especially with pricing and availability lately.

Ya something is off on this Elantra N. On your other U drag video N vs WRX the N did 37.6 sec... hmmm🤔🤔.

GTI fanboy but own a Hyundai so it’s tough but I’d go with the MK8. I had a Mk7.5 till I got in an accident. GTI always punches above its weight class! 👍🏻

    Can't win them all.
Either the GTI's HP is underrated or NGS wasn't used properly. Either way, 1-1 for the Elantra N. As long as the Elantra N defeated the WRX, that is good enough.
If this GTI vs Elantra N had a rematch manual vs manual, the Elantra N would probably be 2-0.
