Hey Phil, just a few observations ..... don't you think there's more detail in the gopro here, particularly look at the road surface (unless they're just compression artifacts) ua-cam.com/video/xw10QiJQ7xA/v-deo.html And isn't there a bit more light and dark contrast in your face which gives a more pleasing look on the gopro here ua-cam.com/video/xw10QiJQ7xA/v-deo.html And when you're a walking talking head on 6k widescreen .... it looks better on the insta360 than the gopro because attention is drawn to you rather than what's going on above and below ua-cam.com/video/xw10QiJQ7xA/v-deo.html Great review btw Edit update: Just a thought - are insta360 still refining the in camera video processing for the RS - will there be a firmware update?

Well the go pro needs a media mod when you start wanting to do more stuff with it. Tbh at the size that the camera is its perfectly fine by me to be in a cage. Plus i would prefer it. Gives a sense of security even if its a bit false.
The GoPro needs bluetooth audio, wireless audio, something so we can use a wireless mic. Apart from that the GoPro is superb! Mind you the One RS is a great action camera too, much more diverse in what it can achieve than the GoPro.

The kind of stuff I film is aimed at low budget (charity funded) 'talkie' videos or event videos (interview style or monologue) and I'm always on the lookout for lower cost, pro-quality, versatile but generally fixed shot rather than motion. I keep seeing action cams and the like as having an awful lot of pro-feature baked in for an affordable price. I'm obsessed with small budget portable gear that can be easily packed away and transported and especially where I see options for multiple units allowing a range of angles during events where I just can't get multiple takes. I've always really loved the idea of being able to create robust solutions to what would ordinarily require significant commercial budget in order to allow non-profit or charitable organisations to get something really capable but using 'hobbyist' kind of money. Can these cameras be used with a narrower field of vision in lieu of, say, a small camcorder in a 16:9 format or a 50mm DSLR just on fixed angle mounts or tripods? Loving the idea of the kind of 'studio in a bag' kind of portability and the possibility of the cameras almost being so idiot proof with presets and easy config options that an organisation could literally train their own staff to be able to roll out and utilise the setup to make recordinga of events without needing their own cinematographer as it were... Kinda like a 'mount this like this, turn these on, angle these lights, fit this Wireless Go mic, press the buttons and just roll... and when you finish the event just switch it all off again and break it down ready for the next location and the next video.' Just bought a Pocket2 to play with and see what that offers. Just concerned that the wide range of options and the gimbal might be intimidating for the casual users who might execute these projects... Action cam seems a lot more 'here's a box camera... here's the go button.'
Great review as always! Looking forward to the comparison with the Action 2. Might pick this up down the line just to take advantage of the 360 filming! I am really curious to see long term how it holds up with the pieces being able to stay clicked together securely. Though like you showed, the case essentially makes this a mute issue!
The 360 part of it is so much fun Tony! The ONE R I have has survived a lot over the last year, so I think the RS will hold up no problem too, especially in this new case 🤘🏻

Hello, it's not super close, and definitely not macro. I would not use action cameras for macro, they just aren't made for it. Unless you use some kind of lens adapter.
That is such a hard question!! I love both of them. The GO 2 is so tiny and portable, but it lacks punch, whereas the Action 2 has a ton of punch but it lacks the tiny, tiny size of the GO 2. I use them for different shots really, IF I had to choose one though I'd probably use the Action 2 more due to the higher quality image and super wide view.
I’m not to action cameras all together but was in the market to get one recently. After a month of research I decided to go with GoPro. Their design seems more solid than the Insta. I have yet to get mine to overheat at 4K 30 or 60 fpm. The 360 just seems like you drop it, it’ll break much more easier. Sure looks nice though. :)
GoPro is a work horse, that’s for sure, the Insta360 is a ton more flexible though, especially for creators. It’s a hard choice, that’s a given, it’s up to you what you need it for.

Gotta say the distortion on the edges of the frame on the Insta would trigger me constantly.
That really depends how wide you go, I personally use all my action cameras on linear.

The battery last a LOT longer on the Action 2. The Action 2 has an SD, that's right, that makes things much more comfortable.
