The DJI-RC Controller, which was previous available only as a COMBO Purchase with the Mini 3 Pro, is now compatible with the Mavic 3. (after firmware update V01.01.0000) And this means that if you owned Mavic 3, and wanted a Controller with a Built-in Display like the RC-Pro Controller, but was put off by the disgusting Price that DJI was charging ($1200) , you now have a cheaper alternative, the DJI-RC, which cost only $309.
In this video, we compare these two controllers, highlighting the differences between these two controllers and finding out which one of these has the longer transmission range.

Thank you for saving me $900! I have the Mini 3 Pro and Mavic 3 Pro (and was considering the RC Pro Controller). I'll just spend my money on the next cool thing from DJI (who now get all my tech-toy money!) Just bought the Osmo Pocket 3.... If DJI starts making vehicles I'm in trouble!
Haha thanks David for tuning in. Glad you found over video to be helpful. I think the Pocket Osmo 3 is a brilliant camera, good choice!
I'm totally confused on the correlation of the aircraft battery range to the range of the controller. The aircraft battery has nothing to do with the performance of the controller.
I was thinking the same
Same
I think what they are saying is that if you fly in a straight line until the drone battery runs low enough to prompt you to return home, you don't get far enough for the controller range to be a problem.
@@footbal9584 You are right that it shows range shouldn't be a limiting factor for either controller, but he says repeatedly that he thought the drone would fly farther with the Pro, which... makes no sense.
@@michaelrcolton ya I'm not sure. I did test my mini pro 3 with the RC controller today and got it to about 1.4 miles, 2200 meters before I lost signal and it returned home automatically. This was at at 120 meters in the air with mostly line of sight with some trees.
As the battery was the limiting factor in this "range test", can I suggest you keep the drone hovering and have someone drive away with the controller? That way we learn the theoretical actual signal range if the signal goes before the battery does. It might also be worth doing a more real world range test with greater interference factors like buildings, valleys, trees, mountains, cliffs - in order to show which has stronger signal propogation and by how much. Its more likely people will lose signal after ducking around a valley or cliff than flying 10 km away in an open field. Unless you're flying to an island, it's almost always easier to drive closer to your target if there's nothing between you and it, like in this vid. Great analysis though, I appreciate it!
Thanks for the constructive feedback. If we can find a suitable location to do this safely and not lose our drone we will endeavour to carry our this test. Thanks for tuning in.
@@JeremyToh thanks so much for taking the time to read it ❤️
Exactly my thought. This test was completely useless.
Exactly what I wanted to say. Proclaiming one and testing another... What a disappointment of a test.
@@DavidNakashidze I mean, stay positive bro - there's no perfect YT video.
A few things to add. The pro battery is 7.2 volt over the 3.6 of the rec. at similar mah capacity, that’s almost double the power. The pro transmits at 33db power vs 26 on the rc. That’s over double again. The drone distance doesn’t matter in an open space, but get around a city and you have a much better chance of keeping signal, especially behind bridges. The pro’s ability to run multiple apps does come in handy, especially when using a hotspot (think B4UFLY or LAANC).
The sound byte when you cut brought me back my man, cheers and Happy New Year!
Thanks. This comparison is exactly what I needed before deciding on which to get
Great videos you have Jeremy. I love how you compare prices for us. Thank you
Thank you for clarifying the differences between these controllers. You made my choice easy!
That Transformers audio sample for transitional cuts is absolute gold! Thanks for the nostalgia! Fantastic comparison video, too!
“NOT A DRUG SCALE” 😂
Seriously, though, thanks for this. Just getting set to upgrade from my Mini 2 and it’s good to know that the RC will be completely adequate for what I need.
So I guess we need two scales... 🤣
Thanks for this review. So well done! I actually accidently ordered the DJI RC instead of the Pro and was questioning sending it back for the more expensive one thinking I was losing out on some serious features.... but not really! I'm going to stick with what I have and I'm sure it'll be just fine. Cheers!
The DJI-RC really impressive for its Price. Don't worry you're not missing out on any features. We were able to get the DJI-RC on Mini 3 to 8.5km. How amazing is that? Check it out here 👇

@@JeremyToh im in a relatively small city. i usually start having signal issues around 1600 meter mark. and seldom get beyond 1900 meters before needing to return to home base.
Haven't laughed that many times while watching a comparison video in a while. Thanks for the humor. Great review

Good coverage, to the point.
Thanks for the review. I really enjoyed the James Bond background music.
Great video, thanks
I tested this comparison for myself, and in short, RC Pro is way better in dealing with interference and therefore can achieve better range. In rural areas it may be close, but in urban and suburban environments in my experience, RC Pro wins hands down every time.
So the antennas help?
not sure why that means they cost $900 more.
this is touches on something i was curious about that wasn't covered in the video. and that is consistency of connection in areas where there is a lot of interference and such. i do not expect to ever go 5 miles out. i can't even keep physical line of sight going 1 mile out. but even at 1 mile to 1.5 miles i often get connection warnings. and im curious if the RC Pro is better at always maintaining a strong connection. this is the only reason i can see for upgrading and this was not covered in the video. im very new to using a drone and have a dji 3 mini pro with the dji rc.
@@TurkeyMaze I don’t think this is an antenna issue, where the signal strength (wattage) of the radios would have been in question. Seeing as they achieve similar distances in ideal (no interference) conditions, I would speculate, the radio wattages are similar but the difference we’re seeing has to do with the power/speed of the actual chipset/CPU used in the Pro and its better ability to deal with (filter out) interference, and that’s where our $900 is going.
@@markysf RC Pro won’t be “better at always maintaining a connection”. There will be times it will lose connection due to whatever, but that will happen less frequently and under smaller number of scenarios, *compared* to RC. The best way to decide on whether to upgrade is, in my humble opinion, renting a RC Pro and testing it to see yourself in your environment, surroundings, flight conditions. That’s what I did, and in my case the cost difference wasn’t justified by the better performance because I mostly fly rural and suburban areas where there isn’t a lot of interference.
@@retropixer thank you very much - i appreciate the context - i hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend - take care
Thanks Great review 👊
Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed watching this video
GOO JOB MY FRIEND , THANKS
Thank God I will buy one of each of them
Thank you!
Honestly, from my experience having owned both controllers and the Mini 3 Pro and the Mavic 3, I think the DJI RC is a very nice well rounder, although for some photography people that HDMI port on the rear of the Pro can come handy at times, but personally, I'd take the RC Pro mainly because I don't want to have any limitations when recording/shooting photography. Nonetheless the Dji RC itself is a strong controller, it's just the signal that pulls it down.
tks for the show!
tks!
Another important difference, that most people miss, is the internal cooling system. The DJI RC uses passive cooling and only has a heatsink, while the RC Pro has an active system that uses a heatsink / fan. This is very important for long flights and hot environments where the controller can overheat. When it does, the DJI RC will force dim the screen and have the exact same issue that people experience with the RC-N1 and smartphone. And as you pointed out the screen is dimmer than the RC Pro to begin with, at just 700nits or 30% less than the RC Pro. The RC Pro, on the other hand, can ramp up a fan to prevent overheating and should never have this problem. The price you pay, of course, is the extra drain on battery and weight of the cooling system.
It's not worth it
So basically We will die of heat stroke before the controller gets dim,
@@Mike-kt4qh do you not realise that the 5.8 ghz on the dji rc pro is crazy I have a mavic 3 with a Dji rc pro and IT IS WAYYYYY BETTER THEN THE NORMAL RC and can it run cod & roblox
Thanks mucho! You just saved me lots of mola! :)
Excellent vid.. thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant review. I never realised they changed the firmware to allow the RC to be used with the Mavic 3. I was upset when the didnt allow the original smart controller to be used from the Mavic Pro 2. It makes the whole Mavic 3 package a lot more appealing now. Cheers
The rc controller supports air2s now. same upgrade from mavic 2pro
Great review and comparison. I think in an open space it'll be nearly the same range and the pro would do much better in the city where there is more interference. That's my guess. Either way 900 is way too much.
My new favourite drone channel ❤
Thanks mate. We appreciate it. We hope we can keep your viewership.
Your review is helpful for me in understanding there is no need for these controllers. I am happy with my S22 Ultra, far suprior with 1700nits. Thank you.
Have you seen the comparison that those phones overheat and drop their brightness or that the combined weight is double or more? I decided to go with the RC.
Nice and funny and interesting video! Like it and like you!
Thanks buddy. We love your construction videos too! 🤟👍
This was an excellent video and answered my questions perfectly. Thanks so much for making it. I'm going to buy the cheaper one. (One tip for you: the audio levels in your video are a bit up and down, especially the sound effects are loud in comparison to your voice levels. Try leveling them all out. Other than that a superb video. Gracias amigo).
Hello! Does the hdmi out on the pro versión give you a live clean feed in 1080p or only a feed with all flight information shown ?
Thank you for the video. I've been wondering whether I should buy the Pro version... BUT.. you cleared all my doubts off!.
GREAT THANK YOU 👌👌
No problem 👍

Cool comparison video. Makes me feel good about the DJI RC. I’ll deal with the 700 brightness.
Thanks for watching. We think the 700nits is good enough, just get a Sun Shade. 😎
And with the $900 you just saved, you can buy a Mini 3 Pro, or the next DJI Avata FPV drone.
Thank you just saved me a lot of $$$
SUBBED! Thanks. DJI Mavic Pro 3 on its way! 😀
Very cool 🤝🤟🏼😎
Thanks! 🙏🤟
Been dreaming of getting the RC Pro for a while now but the DJI RC’s pretty impressive too with its more affordable price.
As soon as the update for the air2S will be available the RC is mine 😂🤞
Thanks for testing, but u forget a lot of stuff, probably u can NOT Download 4k Video from Drone to the DJI RC only RC Pro support this, also mastershot editing only on RC Pro, the booting/start time is a lot faster on RC Pro, the option to rearrange the Antennas are also very important on RC u have to face to the drone and hold the controller directly to the drone, the delay in responsive in fly is also lagging on RC the RC Pro has a much less delay in transmitting controlling signals, the video quality in live view is a lot better on RC Pro, the RC does lag in UI using a lot more - the RC PRO does this not... and so on very important things! I have both controller and can confirm this ! The RC is a great Controller BUT for Professional usecase the RC Pro is ure choice u have to go. The RC is more a good toy with some important less performance compare to the RC PRO. For daily Hobby/Flying filming the RC is a good choice! But when u first time fly with the RC Pro and recognize the less delay in controller signal transmitting and the much better quality in live stream u don't want to use the rc often anymore ;)
Question: I have a shutter lag with the Rc and a Mini 3 Pro. Seems to be between a half second and just over a second. Does the RC Pro solve that problem? I’m a still shooter and have missed moving objects because of the shutter lag. Thanks’
@@kevinnadeaneudaly2553 on RC Pro u will not have this lag.
It's not worth the extra money though
I have a mini 2 and I use my iPad, with an adapter, to view the camera’s video feed. It’s a bit bulky and a bit more weight, but at least I can look around easier and see much more than my phone..
Thank you guys. I think you just saved me $900!!!!
Glad we could help!
Congratulations, great video. I just sold my Air 2s and was unsure if I got a good deal including the RC Pro in the sale. I got the Air 3 with second generation RC, I believe with some advantages like better antennas. Waiting to get there to check it out. Big hug directly from São Paulo, Brazil.
Good choice! Thanks for tuning in. Much love from Shanghai, China.
Would the range difference with the RC Pro be better if the signal strenghth was at 2 or 3 bars. That may make a difference when in a more remote area.
Can either of these be used for programmed mapping missions? Either on board flight paths or third party apps?
Do both controllers show similar performance flying behind buildings or objects? I know the RC gets cut off pretty easily even at short distances.
THANKS~!!! You just saved me $900.
Glad you found it useful. Merry Christmas! 🎄
Does the RC Pro provide clean hdmi output like the smart controller?
It is not clear why anyone would expect the remote controller to allow the drone to fly farther when the limiting factor is the battery on the drone. A better test would be in a radio interference situation whether the additional transmitter and receiver capability allows to operate when there's interference. The RC range can be very limited in urban environments where there's interference.
Can we pair DJI RC(V2) with Mavic 2 Pro?
Hi Jeremy, pity you didn’t do the comparisons with the mini3 but otherwise all good. I know you mentioned in a previous video that you lose quality if I do a screen record but if I don’t want to do a screen record doe’s it records directly onto the micro stick therefore not losing quality? Cheers 👍
The DJI RC records directly into the micro stick, and it records it at 720p. We have done the comparison with the Mini 3, we suspect you've seen it, but if you haven't, check it out here. 👇
ua-cam.com/video/K2zFG8ef18E/v-deo.html
Nice,,, I did like this...
Thanks for tuning in. 🙏
Curious how the lag time differs between them. Like taking a photo then maneuvering. The non pro lags a bit, not sure if the pro is quicker.
I've stumbled upon this video after initially thinking of buying a Mini 4 Pro and continuing down the rabbit hole to now considering a Mavic 3. I was really curious about the controller differences and this video was so helpful! I'm really confused though, what exactly does one need the internal storage on the CONTROLLER for? Is it strictly for recording the screen output directly? (which isn't something I ever really do or think I'd need)
It is strictly for screen recording & maybe firmware update, don't see why anybody would want it for storing anything else.
Glad we could help, we just released a review video on the DJI Air 3. Another rabbit hole to chase, but I think it’s a good explanation and we've compared it to the Mini 4 & Mavic 3. Thanks for dropping us a comment.

Sure thing! Thanks for tuning in. Glad you enjoyed the video.
좋은 비교 영상 감사합니다
감사합니다 🙏
I’m here because I’m having an issue with my DJI RC (non-pro) and my Mini 3 Pro. I have the “Cache When Recording” feature enabled on the M3P and a huge sd in the controller, but it won’t cache. Saw some tutorials on UA-cam that demo’d this feature working with an RC Pro but not sure if it works with regular RC. That’s a huge issue for me and would be worth the upgrade if flight footage caching doesn’t work on regular RC. I miss this feature from my old workflow (mavic 2 pro + DJI GO 4 app on my iPhone).
Just Sub'd. Thanks for the video. I have the mavic 2 with the PRO RC and totally bummed I have to go out and buy a completely different smart controller for my Mavic 3. I'll probably stick to the Cheaper of the two since I do not need HDMI output or screen recording for my clients. Looking forward to more vids from you. Thanks!
Thanks for the support we appreciate your feedback. The DJI RC is a good Controller, you'll be very happy it, and you can buy another drone with the money you saved. And that's a quote from one of our viewers on this video.
@@JeremyToh that's very true. Now I just need to sell my mavic 2 with smart controller so I don't feel so poor after I bought the mavic 3.
Good luck. Hope you make a good return. ✌️
What's the pro like with breaks in line of sight? I was filming at about 2km range the other day with my RC, but there were a few trees in the way and I lost connection with my mini 3 pro (which then failed to RTH on the dropped connection). I ended up running down the road about 500m to regain a connection, but even then it was very weak at ~1.5km unbroken line of sight... luckily battery levels were okay, or could have been a drop into a reservoir haha.
This is amazing results as I am looking to pick up one of these controllers for my mavic 3. Whats not making sense to me is the range being the same. If the RC Pro has more transmitters and receivers shouldn't have gone a further distance? Or does the advantage having more transmitters and receivers on the RC PRO have to do with more penetration behind objects. I will like if possible to see whats the difference is range with the RCN1 stock controller vs the DJI RC with the mavic 3. Thank you so much for this.
Double transmitter and receiver in RC-PRO will give you extra resolution not extra distance, So there is no actual difference between both controller regarding to the rang because both will give you the maximum range for the the drone itself, Even DJI says both controllers will give the same distance which is 15 KM.
@@snns99 again wrong. The RC won't go as far as it will lose connection which means it will then want to RTH. The RC pro with its external antennas will go much further before needing to RTH as it won't lose connection as easy. This is shown on mutiple other videos on YT
In terms of standard operation, in a wide open area with minimum humans, and minimal interference, both this controllers are going to net you a similar performance. If this is how you normally fly, then both controllers will have similar performance, because the Mavic 3 will last only 28-30 minutes of flight time. We could have push the battery life to 0% to find out the ultimate battery life, but let's be honest here, that's not how everyone operates their drone, and it is a bit reckless to do it like that. If you flying from behind objects, and in an urban setting, we do recommend you check out the tests carried out by our friends on @droneXfactor Hope this answer helps.
Check out @droneXfactor 's Signal Fidelity Test here👇
ua-cam.com/video/VMOMUOrGgPk/v-deo.html
We are testing the DJI RC with the RCN1 on the Mini 3, if you're interested, please stay tuned.
@@snns99 Wrong, having an external double antenna will give you better performance in every way because at the end of the day it is all digital data that has to be transmitted and received. To understand this, all you have to do is look at professional radio equipment (handheld, vehicles, etc.). You'll see that pretty much all of them use external antennas, and for them range is the most important factor for their antennas tend to be huge. Bigger is better in terms of range and general performance because it gives the antenna more surface area to transmit / receive so it's more likely to pick up very weak signals at longer distances. More over, internal antennas are much more vulnerable to internal interference from the controller's own circuitry. This is another reason professional radio equipment always use external antennas, to get the antenna away from the body of the device which always gives better performance.
I wonder if the rc pro out preforms the rc with impedance such as buildings or structure? The range from both controllers were limited from the battery of the drone, not the range that the controllers could possibly reach. But realistically most drone shots are within a mile from home base. So with that being said i would like to see if theres a difference with impedance?
I’ve been hearing the same about the range difference within my drone community. Surprisingly the RC Pro is surpassing the transmission signal of the new RC. People were saying the exterior antennas would make it better but that’s not the case.
Great comparison video, you answered a few questions I had. One was the battery life.
Take care!
I think everyone's experience will vary, depending on circumstances. i.e. wind, landscape and interference. We tired to provide a best case scenario, by doing the test in an open area, on a calm and almost windless day. And in our test, the DJI-RC performed just as well as the RC-PRO. And unless DJI makes a stronger battery, there is no point going further and risk losing your drone. Thank you for tuning in, glad we could help.
The rc controller will get an adapter to let it use a sim card and mobile data. It will plug into the "host" usb-c port next to the sd slot. Also, I live in the US, but I was shipped the "global" mini 3 pro (that's what it says on the box). Any idea how to make it FCC/US mode for stronger signal?
Wow. Did not know this. For any viewers that are interested. 👇

For the Mini 3 Pro, we managed 5kms on the DJI RC. But because of the Quality issue DJI has been facing, some people have reported they couldn't even get 1km. If you are having such problems please contact DJI or your retailer. In Australia we use FCC like in the US.
