  • Drum Throne Ergonomics HACK Using Scales? Physics For Better Drumming!
This has completely changed how I do my consultations with drummers. This is a part of my Biomechanics Assessment for proper Posture at Strata Internal Performance.

Very interesting stuff as always! I'd love to hear more about the flat drum thrones vs bicycle style and shifting weight that you alluded to. I bought a bicycle style top with the space in the middle at NAMM a couple years ago. It was developed by a chiropractor! So I wonder how much of this is personal preference and good/bad.

Great question and I’ll see if I can get my hands on one of the bicycle seat thrones so I can do a proper analysis.
In short, I don’t recommend them. Anything that modifies your weight distribution, especially when you’re performing larger bass drum strokes with lifting your leg, modifies your centre of mass, and can create issues.
I appreciate that a chiropractor created the throne that you purchased. They are masters of spine physiology, and most structural pathologist. However, unfortunately, does not mean they are experts in Ergonomics and external forces/mechanics.

Great information Brandon, thanks for the video!
I think it's quite important to have the right balance on the stool especially when playing with both legs/ankles at the same time. This is a common situation when playing extreme metal on the drums. In this case it may be better to even sit a bit further back on the stool so that you can lift both legs at the same time without changing your balance. Too far forward and pressure will be on the knees, which can cause pain over a long time.
Here are a couple of videos I've found discussing this by drummers in the extreme metal style:
    ua-cam.com/video/u6MBSuIHc_0/v-deo.html
    1:45 - discussing leg motion
    2:25 - discussing ankle motion
    ua-cam.com/video/Crd7OharH4Y/v-deo.html
discussion of throne height and balance over the stool

Also, I'm not sure if you're very familiar with the swivel technique but if you would release a video on swivel ergonomics that would be very helpful - a lot of drummers develop knee pain from this but some can do it comfortably

    Amazing idea 💡
I still struggle and experiment with sitting heights and positions.

@@brandondrummechanics a couple of things: on different days the body might require sitting higher but I lose stability and control on mid tempo singles runs. And there's a lack of good drum stools on venues, such a pain in a butt, literally😄
But last time I found myself sitting lower and it was way more comfortable and I felt more in control and not wobbling that much. Just above 90 degree angle in my knee joint 👌

My chiropractor used it to check my balance, I think… this really important information. Thanks a lot!

Great info! I'm really curious what you think of using an active sitting chair such as a QOR360 Ariel for a drum throne.

Thanks for asking! Truthfully, I’ve never heard of it but I’ll do some research and check it out ASAP

Thankyou for the information!Im having a struggle with my feet because when I try to lift my feets and play with my Hands simoltaneously my body feels weird and I lose control.
    I will try this method

I'm not a drummer but this all has an impact on me because I do have si joint issues and a straight neck. I've been searching for a more comfortable way to play my acoustic and I am probably going to go with a flat topped drum throne because of this video.
Is getting a back rest going to help with keeping my posture straighter or just a waste of money?

Hey, thanks for a cool video, question that popped to my head: are round, flat thrones better for posture than, say, a motorcycle throne like DW9000?

Hi Brandon, I'm 5′7 height, Work out such your body, use double kick not professional dummer
I was feeling back pain and professional fisioterapist (and he is sponsored drummer) said problem was height of throne and did a "drumms fit" in my set.
    - My Throne NOW is 90 degrees angle legs when sit , but I see you and lot of drummers uses ~ "60" degrees (bit less) leg including you.
    - Also he told me to sit foward using only 1/2 rounded Throne, sitting on Ischial bone to push spine be flat and aligned, lower back aligned as long as shoulders etc...
Do you have any comments ? I know can be subjective but sitting "hight" how about back and posture? And hight toms vs snare ... this is a good subject
For instance, 22' inc kick will push to have higher toms, 20' kick I can lower toms and be more confortble ...
This "drums fit" is something dificult to find once people will only start feeling pain when getting older
