This was incredible advice. I’ve never seen anything like it on YT. Now I can practice “hand speed” on the couch at night! I’m doing it right now with a dog in my lap 😂

Thumbs - who’d a thought they were so critical!! I was having problems making my left hand work in traditional grip, started with traditional grip in 1961. Took some lessons which stressed thumbs!! All the difference in the world!!

Great idea. I think most drummers end up doing these things to some degree but it's always worth discussing ways of helping other drummers.

Thanks!! Try the finger and thumb variation! It’s tougher AND crazy how much control changes with sticks

Please demonstrate more exercises and techniques, and please include the versions for when you can't play with sticks or behind the kit.

I thought doing such things was only good to upset my youngest (she doesn’t like me ‘slapping’ on my thighs for some reason). But organising it into an exercise is a brilliant idea. I will try this and happy to receive more of it.

Haha my son always stops my thighs.. (no drumming!!) haha… try it tho! The fatigue from “just hands” is wild

This is a great exercise, I've tried applying it to the feet as well, i.e.: heel up, heel down and just toes (that's a hard one!), but maybe you thought it too already!?! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and for inspiration !

That's interesting! Thanks. The question that I have regarding this kind of exercices, is the how. what would be the most efficient way to build the muscles if you do this on a daily basis ? You mentioned that we should practice until it burns, but is there a minimum amount of rep and rests that we have to do, like 45 second exercice then 15 seconds rest etc.... ? Because if I wanna start doing this a daily basis, I have to have a plan or a system, if not I will just do it randomly. what do you recommend ?

Super great question! I typically pick two different areas of my body to focus on technique. Fortunately, with drums, hands and feet are easy. I would set a timer and try to do each of these exercises for 2 to 3 minutes, then switch to a lower body one, see if you can repeat that 3 to 5 times each. See how that goes!
Truthfully, we’re just getting in the exercise progression models and there are a lot of incredible ways to progress
