2013 Ford F-150 Limited 4X4 Problem....

  • Just purchased a brand-new 2013 Ford F150 Limited 4X4 and it has only 230 miles on it. I took delivery of it yesterday and as you can see in the video the truck will not start. This is the third time that this had happened. The only way I get it to start is to disconnect the battery and then reconnect it. I've taken it to the dealer and they cannot replicate the problem and they state that there no fault codes showing up. I picked it back up this morning and as you can see the trouble is back. I tried to disconnect the battery again however this time it did not fix it. The truck is dead in the water.....the dealer had no idea what to do. Anyone have any similar problems?
    **UPDATE**
The truck sat dormant in my driveway over the weekend. The dealer picked it up with a tow truck on Monday and took it to their shop. as of Wednesday, the truck is still at the dealer. When it arrived there the truck started with no issues. After it heated up they were able to duplicate the issue. The dealer states the are unable to locate the issue and suspect it may be one of 11 PCM modules however they cannot identify which one it is isolated to. They say the truck has to heat up and then they have only a 30 minute window to test each module individually so needless to say it will be time consuming to determine which one, if any, is the culprit.
NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER. I called Ford Customer Relations today and opened a ticket. Not sure what they are going to do for me but we will see.....
    **UPDATE 2**
Today is Saturday and the truck is still at the dealer since Monday. They service writer called me yesterday and stated they have isolated the issue to a wiring harness with a bad connection. They still do not have a time frame as to when I will get my truck back. Ford customer service has been worthless. They have not returned any calls as of yet. Not sure why. I was told I would be receiving a call from the area manager within 48 hours, well that was yesterday. More wait game.....
    *UPDATE*
Sorry, I forgot to publish the update and what was wrong. They finally found the problem after nearly three weeks. Turns out it wasn't the module itself but a bad solder with some of the wiring in the module. Ford corporate customer service manager wasn't a help either. He tried to pacify me which I didn't appreciate. They did offer me the premier maintenance plan which covers oil changes, tire rotations etc......Not much compensation with a serious problem like my truck had. Since the problem has been fixed I have not experienced the issue. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
    *UPDATE 7/2014*
Well what I thought was a final update was for not. I hate to report the problem is back with some new ones too. The truck now has about 13000 miles on it. I took my family on a trip to Florida and I ended up getting stranded in Daytona Beach, Florida when the problem reoccured. I called the local Ford dealer for help. They stated they could not get the truck in to a mechanic until Friday, well today was Tuesday. Friday came around and when I arrived at the dealership the problem cleared up and they wouldn't look at the truck. Not even hook up a diagnostic computer to see if there were any error codes. The service assistant manager said they were extremely busy and since the problem cleared up there was nothing they could do. I even asked them to pull up the history and see what was fixed a year ago. Their reply? The history only stores for six months and they cannot see anything. I called the BS card and they replied that if everything was stored on every car there would be any storage left. Needless to say I was pretty pissed. I left the dealership and began to make the trip back home home and all seemed okay at the time, that is until I tried to pass an 18-Wheeler and accelerated. All of a sudden the check engine light started flashing and I lost all power from the engine. The truck started coasting. Luckily there was a rest area at the exact location I was at and I was able to coast the truck there. I turned the truck off and let it sit for a second and fired it back up. It seemed to be okay and the rest of the voyage back home was uneventful. Needless to say THIS TRUCK IS NOT SAFE. I have a call into the selling dealer who is trying to figure out whats going on. I have told them that the truck needs to go and be reacquired and replaced by Ford and I have had enough. I'll keep you posted to the outcome……………….
    *UPDATE July 2015*
Well....FORD LISTEN UP....This POS is at it again. I am sick and tired of your people telling me it's fixed and it is good to go. You will not replace the vehicle even though I have video evidence the problem exists. The truck has been in the shop well over 60 accumulated days. How would you like to get stranded in the middle of no where with your family several times because of your faulty POS truck?

I would love to see a follow up video to find out what the problem was and how it was treated by the dealer. Obviously this would be frustrating but not catastrophic. It's under warranty. If its reoccurring I'm sure Ford will replace the truck. Nothing mechanical will ever be perfect. Working in the automotive industry every vehicle is comprised of thousands of parts (including fasteners). Even with a great supplier network and high quality parts, engineering & assembly problems happen. The failure rate of the new F150 is one of the best in the industry. I hope it got resolved.

A buddy of mine has three 2011 F150s (landscaping company) with the Ecoboost engines and all have 140K plus miles on them and no drive train issues with any of them. They're used for towing trailers 80% of the time. Lemons exist across all brands.

@@ramargate Drive train PCM, flexplate, torque converter, transmission, drive shaft(s), then finally differentials/axles and cv or ball joints. Everything that is between and moves power from the engine to the wheels is the drivetrain.

This EXACT thing happened to me today. My shade tree Mechanic came and fixed it in 15mins for 7cents! It was the #10 fuse on the INSIDE of the truck. It somehow gets corroded and causes this. I replaced ut and haven’t had any other Problem’s! 👌🏾👍🏾

The Ecobust is totally not worth the hassle. I have a 2011 5.0 with 142k on it and I haven't done anything other than routine maintenance and some little preventative maintenance here and there. I use it for work and it tows quite often. I would recommend it for anyone!

I never have been a Ford guy myself, I always drove GM trucks bcause I worked for GM... untill 2011 when I test drove a Ford with ecoboost and crew cab. Needless to say I bought it soon after returning to the dealersip. we love it. it out performs my GMC K2500 with a 7.4 engine in it in every aspect. The Ford will pull our 31 ft travel trailer with ease. and I have pulled it at 95 mph (only a time or two...too spooky) and Ford has a great trailer tow electronic program built into it when hooked to the traler. As for me I would buy another one

I am a Ford Truck guy thru & thru, but these Hi-tech "wunder-truck"s give me the creeps.....So you are sending a "start request"? to the trucks computer? As our lousy computers do seemingly every day...you "request" it to do something? What happened to Commands? I turn the key & I ORDER you to start, or at least try! What's next? I turn the wheel to the left & my 2020 Ford will consider that a computerized "request"? Rather than spend some $50K worth on a rolling computer array, I think I'll just "perfectly" restore a classic 73-74 F250 & put the newest & best powerplant & trannie to make it go...Screw this technology!!

      *****
Having worked on cars since 1984, now semi-retired, I was "along for the ride" as computers started to be incorporated into the various systems...I so-called left the business as the computer count was at three, one for the engine, one for the transmission & one for the "other" (They called it the 'body' computer).
Today I've heard the count is up to Twelve computers...12 !! Kinda like your Twelve peers as it were. No, no.....I'm looking at the 68-74 F250.....The powerplants are a separate issue.....Don't bother with Automatics, they are now "joined at the hip" to their respective engines. Strong reliable Manuals are still being made. Edelbrock now has a 700HP supercharged crate engine at Five liters(302CID) worth of displacement. Tied into a Tremic TKO manual will slide right into any old truck. What electronics there is, is a stand alone pure-engine computer....no interference with the starting/charging systems, nor anything else. Those power numbers could only be had with a well built old-school 460 powerplant....the new stuff is just that much better now! Too bad they dropped the ball with the rest of the vehicle. I won't even get into ABS, Traction control & all the other "nanny" systems.

    • @mikeg3529
      @mikeg3529 7 років тому

Its sends a start "request" to the computer for a number of reasons. These newer trucks usually have an auto-idle stop/start function you can use, where it kills the engine if you are idling in traffic and restarts it as soon as you press the gas to move again. The computer needs to have the "authority" so to speak to be able to shut off and restart the engine on its own.
It also has a lot to do with scumbags who steal cars. Your 73 f150 could be stolen in short order by any dummy with handtools. Modern criminals are now able to hack and challenge even fairly sophisticated chip-key cars from the earlier 2000s and the automakers just need to play the game. that means more embedded electronic modules that are more complicated.

And trust me they don't. I've experienced Ford's favorite word when it comes to owning up and fixing problems and it's called tolerance. My uncle had a front end problem on his Ford (28000 miles) and they agreed to fix one side but told him that the other side was within tolerance. Long story short he had to end up going to a shop and having the front end rebuilt at his own expense. I look for the make that has the most recalls because lets face it no ones perfect.

i am writing this for my cousin, He had 2009 ford, with this problem, and he now has a 2013 with the same problem,He contacted the dealer, only to hear they have never heard of this problem,, B.S, anyways he found his own fix for his,
All the battery connections have an anti corrosion coating on them. from the factory, Clean this off of all the battery terminals with a wire brush etc, it is minus 38c this morning and his truck started no problem.
Before his new ford would start in warm weather, but not in the cold, now it works fine, and it has been starting in the cold since he cleaned the terminals
hope this helps with all those fords out there

I am having similar issues with my 2010 Ford F-150 with 5.4L engine and 6R80 transmission. I've taken it to the Ford Dealership and they re-downloaded the TCU computer to latest update... issue still existed. I took it back to the Ford Dealership and they said it was valve body/tranny solenoid(s)... I told them to give me my truck back because I didn't think that was the case. Ended up sending out my PCM (which has the ECU and TCU boards on it too) to ModuleExperts to have refurbished... they informed me that pcb to processor linkage was defective and unrepairable on the motherboard and was forced to purchase a new remanufactured PCM. I received the PCM and installed into my truck and then took to a local mechanic to have the PCM reprogrammed to my VIN to get it started again. The shop reprogrammed the truck and it cranked up a few times, then died once again (similar to yours, wouldn't crank when turning over). Needless to say I am out of options and feel like the Ford Dealership was pulling my fingers, myself and other mechanic friends have no idea whats going on, and the truck is at my mechanics shop being further diagnosed.
*** Disclaimer: I had a SCT X4 tuner hooked up to my truck and I ran MPT custom tunes (been on truck since September 2016). In December, 2016 I had a bad hydraulic lifter stick on me and it chewed up my camshaft (replaced camshaft and all hydraulic lifters - driver side). The day after I got my truck back I was experiencing similar symptoms as you have. Symptoms include: 1) I'll drive truck and stop somewhere to turn off, go to crank over, and randomly completely dead and wont even crank over 2) I'll be driving and if I'm driving in stop and go traffic the truck will start to reprogram itself and go into limp mode (stuck in 1st gear) and when I turn off the truck is completely dead when I attempt to crank over 3) I'll have the truck sitting and running at idle in park or neutral and then after about 7-10 minutes the truck will start to reprogram itself and go into limp mode and when I turn off the truck is completely dead when I attempt to crank over.
I know the solution to your issue was bad PCM, but if anyone else has experienced these issues and repaired their truck please enlighten! Thank you!

Reminds me when i bought a brand new 98 contour. The day i bought it i had to take it back to the dealer because it started cutting out. They found that during assembly they had a wiring harness routed wrong and it had rubbed through causing intermittent issues. They fixed it and i owned the car for about 12 years before selling it to a friend and his daughter is driving it to this day. However nothing is more frustrating than spending that kind of money and having problems.

Matthew Fant I just love these ignorant Internet tough guys on here. Amazing the ignorance. So being that there are more of these trucks out on the street than any other of course there will be shown more flaws. But per truck sold there are less issues with these than others. You always hear about the bad, the only good you see is in forums or not at all. I have a nightmare story from my 05 Malibu I can share. Or my brothers 04 Duramax, or my ex bosses 09 Tundra, etc, etc.... I can also share that my Ecoboost is an amazing truck and love it. Tows my 8500 lb camper and 1600 lb boat just fine at 2000 RPM. I'm not scarred or worried about the Turbos since you can purchase them cheap. As for the Tundra fan above, my 2012 MSRP was $43k, with all the incentives I purchased for $32k. The less equivalent, same yr trucks are on lots for $30-$33k. Not sure how his math is but it looks like I've basically had a free truck for a few years and will use that equity to get the 2015. I'm glad to see you have a level head sir.

I just purchased March 2017 a used f150 fx4 eco boost with 49,000 miles on it..... I had the same stalling/wrench sign problem with it this very day twice .... coasting by the grace of God off to the side of the highway onto the grass.... wrench light when both times .... scary as it was I am not sure what to do now... I vowed not to ever go back there due to the way I was had (another story) but now I have to go back monday as I do have a SUPPOSED 90 day warranty remaining.... maybe the eco boost... I did have to replace the previous battery with a new one a couple of days after I originally bought the truck .....

I'm torn. I am a loyal Ford owner, but if I had this many problems with my new F-150 I would drive it through the dealers front windows. I still believe Ford builds a better product than most, I just think that they all build the new cars too fast today. I worked on an assembly line when I was younger and the moto was make the numbers and we'll fix the problems later. That is one thing that needs to change throughout every industry today. If I were Ford's CEO I would be reading posts like this and finding out why I have unhappy customers that just spent 45K on a top of the line limited edition truck! Then even if I could not fix the problem myself, find someone who could make this Ford owner happy and buy another Ford later. What ever happened to the good old days when making the customer happy was top priority?

Folks this goes to show you that these Modern Trucks won't the old trucks from the 90's. I have a 96 Ford F150 with 5.0L Windsor V8 with 205,360 miles on it and it's still going strong. The only thing I replaced on my truck was the starter but other than that mostly was just simple maintenance and cleaned out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since. Call me a Redneck or a HillBilly but that is a real fact.

All I'd have to do is put a CIA and I'd be pushing just as much Horsepower as the EcoBoost. However I don't really see the point in it except maybe a gain in 1-2 MPG.

I have a 2013 ford F150 King Ranch Ecoboost I purchased it December 2013. I too have had PCM issues with it starting in Sep. 2016. Same fix after being stranded, coasted to a stop and truck was dead. Then i cranked up in 10 min. and we made it home. Two months later i captured Video of it acting up telling me to put it in park and then the truck tried to go to park while still rolling! A trip to the dealer reveled nothing on the Memory because I have to clear it by unpluging the positive side of the battery and holing it to the negative wire to clear the PCM. The dealer tore into the fuse box under the passengers kick plate side wall ( and Broke then replaced the Ford logo plastic floor plate that covers the wires) they could not fine what was wrong but said that they could not get it to act up again after they witnessed it as i drove in to leave my truck with then for a week. They returned the truck to me at no charge and Until 8/17/2019 it has worked fine. Now it is doing almost the exact thing as rwmgd2's was doing. Coding at P2112. I thought I would let everyone know there are more of us with this issue. Dealer said Drive train warranty is 7 years.

After a lot of research online I could not find anything that could help me solve that same problem on my 2013 F150 Ecoboost (basic XLT). Some people took it back to a dealership and have them replace some modules but did not give a lot of details. It was extremely dangerous when the truck shutdown when I was making a turn after a traffic light.
I did not solve the problem but I figure out why my truck was doing that.
EVERY TIME AFTER I PARK, USE THE E-BRAKE AND TURN OFF AND ON THE TRUCK, THE DASH AND TRUCK WILL GO CRAZY WHILE NORMAL DRIVING.
This happened to me many times until I figure out how to make a "reset" on the system.
    TEMPORARY SOLUTION:
IF THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING, STOP THE TRUCK BUT LEAVE IT RUNNING, SHIFT TO PARK (P), PRESS AND RELEASE THE E-BRAKE AND THE PROBLEM WILL GO AWAY.
THE PROBLEM WILL COME BACK AGAIN IF YOU USE THE E-BRAKE, TURN THE TRUCK OFF, TURN IT BACK ON, RELEASE THE E-BRAKE AND DRIVE (AS NORMAL).
YES! it sounds weird but it worked for me.
    Hope this helps somebody else.

I think it's rather ridiculous that these men get all butt-hurt and get incredibly offended when someone talks shit about a specific car manufacture. This man clearly posted the video for answers from fellow truck lovers, yet get's a video that is torn to shit because everyone gets racists, insulting, and throws out crazy slurs over a piece of metal with wheels.

I drive for about five miles and it shows to be stuck in 5th gear. I pulled off side of road. Turned off ignition, waited about five seconds then started it again. That simple reboot made the little wrench symbol disappear plus transmission is working fine now. Now let’s see if it will stay fixed.

So it got fully charged. Back at 12v. Drove about a 3 miles , them this 🔧 wrench appeared on my dashboard. All says see manual. So I did. And manual says . Illuminates when the system has detected a powertrain or an all wheel drive fault . Contact an authorized dealer soon as possible. That's it??? I have no idea???

Oh yeah... Toyotas NEVER have problems.. Do a You Tube search for "Toyota Frame Rust", and engine sludge for starters. Do an internet search. There's just as many people bitching about their Toyota's as there are American models. Only thing is, the American manufactures take better care of the customers then the Japanese manufactures. I have worked for GM, Ford, Mazda and Subaru and the difference was obvious. There is not a vehicle on the road that doesn't have issues at some point.

Electrical ghost problems like this are a nightmare to find even with all the best diagnosing tools and diagrams. Its obvious they can;t fix the issue with this truck once and for all. I'm not surprised but pretty choked that they won;t replace the truck for you knowing that it;s been a reoccurring issue of so many instances. There is a "lemon" law that would force Ford to replace your vehicle so look it up and see if you fit the parameters.

I have the same problem with my 2013 F150 XLT. The dealer claims that the after market light bar I installed is the culprit. How is this possible? I was told that moister is getting thru the connector and causing the PCM to miscommunicate. Whenever there is an issue, and you have aftermarket items installed, they will point to those items, and ignore all common sense and logic. My advice, even though you may not want to hear it, would be to remove aftermarket accessories, and change the dealer you take it to. Once the problem has been fixed, reinstall accessories. Good luck bro, and i'm very sorry to hear about problems with your truck. I love mine, and i'd be pissed as hell.

I love all of these brand loyalists who say its broken because it's a Ford! No, it's not because it's a Ford. Every make builds lemons from time to time. I've had plenty of experiences where Fords last several hundred thousand miles (from Grand Marquis 4.6 with 215,000 to Aerostar 4.0 with 250,000 to Ranger 2.9 and 2.3 with 200,000), and yet people feel the need to mock Ford for trying new technology? I believe Ford should have done more testing with this engine before releasing it, perhaps they should have waited until the new 2015 model debuted to release it.

I think alot of the problem resolving issues are that the machanics only know or are told to only fix what the computer tells them to fix. This could be because the factory (FORD) wont pay them for anything other than that. For some reason I think this is a Ford Motor Co issue more than a dealer issue.JMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
