    2018 2.7 here,
Just got mine repaired as it did the same thing intermittently. It was the MAP sensor or boost Sensor, luckily after proving that it happened during and after warranty and dealer failed the first time to find it, for degree to cover most of the cost, might pursue the rest later. But a good place to start would typically be your MAP sensor or boost Sensor for your eco-boost guys.

The "wrench" sign is called "SERVICE VEHICLE SOON". When it comes on the dealer will use a scan too to see exactly what triggered it. The owner's manual is misleading because they mentioned "power train" which makes you think it's something with the transmission but in fact the powertrain includes a lot of things, including the air/fuel/ exhaust etc. I saw that symbol come on when I forgot to plug in the mass airflow sensor after the car misfires

@@trevorjohnson5213 Sorry to hear. My guess is the engine is having problems with air or fuel air mixture.
It might be that an incorrect intake filter is causing the engine to suck in too much air at high throttle and resulting in engine knocking. The mic mounted on the engine detects the knocking sound and puts the engine in a safety mode.
Have you tried using fuel with a higher octane rating? If the problem disappears then the problem can be confirmed

there is a lot of discussion on this type of issue on the internet. I had similar problem on my 2015 f150 4x4. ford could not find the problem as the error code never would store. f150 discussion board suggested the throttle body was the culprit, ford would not go with that. finally it stalled out and stored the code, I ended up taking it to a non-ford repair shop. I also suggested the throttle body. that mech did the diagnotic testing and had reason to suspect the TB, so I told him I would pay for it, replacing the throttlebody did fix the problem.

Rule of thumb with a warning light; gunning the accelerator isn't generally going to make it go away. When tuned and modded, don't be surprised that the vehicle may not respond well to being tuned and modded.
Neither would I waste my time throwing new mods on a truck that isn't taking the previous mods well.

I've worked on diesels, and old V8's, but not these new electronic engines much at all, so this throttle body change makes me wonder if it's my issue. Gone into limp mode 4 times overall so far, coming up with different gauge warnings every time, making me think the PCM is getting mixed up on the causes too. This throttle body replacement sounds pretty simple, so it's definitely something I'll keep in mind!. When looking at throttle bodies at different locations, there are several companies that make them...is there one that works best out of the number of different brands available? Unsure which one is OEM?

Ok, I have a 2016 F150 Ecoboost 4X4 and I've gotten 3 limp mode activations in a week, including one this morning..embarrasing, holding up traffic! First one, I got the 'wrench' a 'Traction Control' warning, as well as a 'Hill assist not activated'. This first time, the truck would not do over 5 mph, and was shaking somewhat...and all 3 times, it's been within 3 or 4 blocks from home, in the morning. Second time...just the 'Hill Assist not activating', and third time 'Service Advance Track' was the warning! Initially, after the first time, I took it to the dealer, and was told the PCM needed to be reprogrammed. That was $480.00, and after that I had a trip to see my brother planned, which we took (400 miles) and the truck ran like a champ! Get it home, and it's back to 'limping' again...and all have came up at either 'stopped at a light' or one was at a low speed. A restart of the engine, with a 20 second gap, and it runs fine again. I don't want to take it to the dealer, and find they've put on 6 or 7 parts, to find it's still doing it, or that they finally found it after spending far too many $$, thinking they should have found it without all these unneeded parts! They always tell me, it's $175.00 an hour, when looking at my truck as well, so being a dealer sure is a money making/profit designed entity! Idea's guys/gals? BTW - truck is stock, all with OEM parts.

It is the transmission harness shorting out or loosing signal. Do not allow anyone to tell you it's your transmission. The traction control is it's way to reduce power. It also does not matter if it's AWD, RWD OR 4 WHEEL DRIVE. My 2010 is doing it and I have a harness on order. Wires are torn from the transmission connection side. It is possible to have some broken wires on the computer side as well. Rather than trying to fix the harness I ordered a new one from Ford Dealer Online. Hope this helps any of you guys trying to figure out what's going on. Good luck!

This is a "service indicator" warning, it can cause issues like bad trans shifting. Turn the engine of and the wrench and shiting engine problem will disappear. There are people who NEVER look at their dash or lights. So the erratic trans problems get people to loke at "something wrong". That is it, nothing else. If your engine was serviced by "Joes Jiffy Lube" they more than likely did not have cleared the code to tell the car it was serviced. Different cars may do something different things than Fords erratic trans shake when driving. It is NOT a code that will come up on computers.

Similar thing is happening to my base model 2017 F-150 5.0L 2WD (yes I actually have manual windows). I go to pass somebody who is going slow and the truck starts misfiring and bogging when I accelerate and climb higher RPMs, it even happens in sport mode, which really makes me uneasy. The wrench icon didn't pop up but my check engine light is on and has been on since I bought the truck a month ago from a Chevy dealer, which they said may be an O2 sensor fault (O2 sensor didn't matter as I had plans for an exhaust during that time). Funny thing is this all started happening after I got my catless Flowmaster exhaust installed, but before the exhaust was ever even put on, the truck was running fine in all modes. Idk what is wrong with my truck but I do know it isn't funny at all for that to be happening. I love love LOVE this truck, despite that I was actually wanting a 2019 Sierra 6.2L 4WD. I hope nothing too serious is wrong with the truck. I checked my oil life and it turns out the dealer forgot to reset it after the free oil change. I reset it myself so hopefully that helped it, but who knows. I just know that I can't stand when my truck, let alone any truck or car, misfires or bogs for any reason big or small.

I had a problem very similiar to this in my 2015 F150 when the throttle body went bad and needed to be replaced. Truck would be driving down the road fine, then a message on the dash popped up saying hill climb assist deactivated and to see the manual. Truck would stop shifting and limp along until I turned it off, then once it turned back on it would act normal until it's next spell.

Coming out of Connecticut, interstate 91 north just above Hartford doing about 65mph truck dropped in to Limp mode. The error on the screen was fluids. I am on the exit ramp on the side shut down. Turned off the truck for about minutes.. Recycled the start system, the truck was back to normal went back on the interstate drove the rest of the trip home, 157 miles with no issue parked it in the yard. Monday of that next week i made an appointment to have all the fluids levels checked. Front and rear differentials transmission, coolant system Oil level power steering system. Everything, the main reason was the rear differential was low took quite a bit . That was July 2022, 136,231 miles it is now January 2024, 147,100 miles. And i have never gone back into limp mode. I have changed the oil twice and filter.

Replaced the battery and the issue disappeared so far.

I had the same exact issue with my 5.0. It is without a doubt the throttle body. I had 2 90mm TBs from Accufab (branded ford racing) and neither worked. I bought a third after Accufab told me that they were both fine. Hooked up the 3rd TB and everything worked perfectly. Since then I've done a ton of research and it appears that almost every TB for the 5.0 has these types of issues.

It's 100% a throttle body issue. It always happens with aftermarket throttle body's, they are all kinda junk TBH and the ford ECU is very picky about minuet control which is why it was doing that light throttle surging at idle.

I have a 2013 F-150 XLT 4x4 with the 3.5 Ecoboost - for 9 years it was solid as a rock. Now it's doing this same thing. I take it to the dealer and they can't find a code. Guy tells me "no code so they can't help". "We can't just throw parts at it". So, I'm supposed to drive this thing around hoping it doesn't happen again? Or it does and somehow limp back to the dealer without turning it off first so they can get a code?

Got the wrench light on our Fusion PHEV, limp mode, our 12 Volt battery was replaced and we still get the problem. We get the light on very cold temps, minus 15 Celsius. The hybrid battery seems fine, we can go for a good 10 km (in winter) without problems.
We brought it to Ford and they can't read any code in it. They road tested it and it was fine. I hate it when the problem cannot be found, selling the car is an option.

Mainly 2015 and up but more 2018 and up need to update tire size in the pcm either ford because the transmission/torque control module are set at oem tire size but 90% of the people at ford say they can’t change it and tuning won’t trigger a pcm relearn therefore the P code puts it in limp mode and adaptive learning gets all messed up. So i’ve fixed my f150’s and mustangs with forscan by changing the tire size hex code then doing a pcm relearn and adaptive learning reset (these are why many people have to take it for transmission issues the potentially this is whats caused failures in some)

I don't trust Ford ECUs anymore. I had a coil/sparkplug that was faulty with zero warnings or check engine lights. Only hint was a rough idle with occasional pops. The spark plug/coil eventually failed on the road, with the engine cutting out when under load. Still no warnings/check engine lights.
EDIT: Forgot to mention the other side of the coin which is more relevant to this video: I get check engine lights/warnings, but no codes are stored in the ECU. The dealer was not able to find any logged codes. I had to drive to the dealer with the light ON, keep the car running while they scanned for the code (PCM:P2279 - Intake Air System Leak - Bank 1 - Incorrect assembly). They were not able to tell me what the source of the problem was.
