I was in this situation just few months ago, we moved into an apartment December last year with my family and we barely stayed till January, only to receive a bill that we used for December and January, I humbly paid it over a hundred pounds and few over 5months my metre wasn’t working only for them to bring me a bill of over 1800£. I thank God I had a previous metre reading and all, when they started threatening us with legal action my wife sent an email and copied all their bosses, they had no option than to clear everything down to our current bill 😅
Absolutely, always make sure to follow up every conversation with an email😂😂 something I learnt in my social work career, if it’s not written down, it didn’t happen
I'm glad to hear Citizens Advice was of help to you. This is where I work.
Wow! That’s great
They have been useless as regards my case as Royalmail carted away my two 20kg bags I brought to UK instead of delivering to my house.
Good job. In difficult cases, always speak to the Energy Ombudsman. They will be your representative and take the energy company up to resolve the problem asap.
Thanks for the advice
You can only speak to ofgem after your energy provider has not resolved the complaint in six weeks
Standing on your right has saved so many!!! I keep telling people. I pray God clears the debt for your family speedily 🙏
This is exactly my story,I battled with the energy company for 3months...I even cried on the phone one day.But eventually it was resolved
First time hearing about citizen service, This is helpful.Thank you
One thing I did was just to deposit a certain amount monthly so that when the issue is resolved the bill won't be too high...so I estimated my own usage and chose to make monthly payments of a certain amount. When they resolved it,they did the maths and subtracted the total I had paid so far and my had very little to balance
Thought of that but it might not have worked in my case cos they insisted that my meter reading is wrong.
@@IntentionalFavour Same here, because they started using estimated readings even for me they never agreed my meter readings were right too. Those payments helped sha
Thank God it ended well.
Know your right and stand for it👍👍
Also be aware, it is illegal for your gas company to backdate your bill or charge you for any usage more than 12 months ago. Eon Next tried it with me recently, sent me bill from 2020 and 2021, claiming I was undercharged. By law if they cannot get your bill right within 12 months, it's their loss.
In relation to that, be aware that these companies recycle meters. So the meter they install on your property could have been used at another property, and may have a different reading on their system, or a previous debt attached to it. It is the responsibility of the energy company to write off these debts, but what they'll frequently try to do, is pass it on to unsuspecting customers.
This country teaches you to be a responsible Bill payer and because their judiciary is not compromised they threaten you with court.. The best thing is also constant communication with these utility companies. It can be scary.
Yes, I was in Sheffield as well. I paid over £1500 for 1year that I was there. Crazy people. But I paid o. Now, in Manchester, I pay what I use, sometimes £100 amonth at times £88. But never over £200 a month again.
Keep calling them until it is fixed o. When the energy usage is low they act shocked they can come and do the metal reading manually.
Hmmm..this is really helpful Sis..Appreciate for sharing..it may look simple but it goes a long in saving cost honestly..Cheers Sis
You’re welcome 😊
I also went through something similar. £100 pounds was added each month for each estimated bill. After thrashing it out I was refunded close to £250
I can guess this is EDF. I advise you to change your energy supply. Octopus and Scottish power charge is reasonable.
Great piece of information, u just earned a subscriber❤
Welcome on board ❤️
GUYS. SIMPLE. HERE IN UK, OR ABROAD. IF YOUR TENANCY AGREEMENT STATES, ALL BILLS INCLUDED, ELEC’ GAS, BROADBAND, ETC, THEN YOU ONLY PAY WHAT IS REQUIRED AS YOUR TOTAL MONTHLY RENTAL AMOUNT, E.G £1000.
If IT STATES ALL BILLS, OR PART BILLS INCLUDED, THEN YOU NEED TO CLARIFY, MOREOVER IT SHOULD BE CLEAR IN YOUR TENANCY AGREEMENT WHAT YOUR RENT COVERS, AND WHAT IT DOES NOT. FROM THERE YOU WORK OUT YOUR AFFORDABILITY IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO LIVE THERE.
I HEAR THE SISTER STATE SHE WAS A STUDENT BEFORE, SO SHE WAS USED TO PAYING ONE AMOUNT THAT COVERS HER DORM & UTILITIES. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR RENTALS, OR EVEN IF YOU RENT FROM THE COUNCIL DIRECT, THE RENT, IS JUST THAT, YOUR RENT FOR THE PROPERTY. COUNCIL TAX, UTILITIES, SERVICE CHARGES, ARE ALL SEPARATE PAYMENTS. ✊🏾💯🇬🇧
My sister is what we are facing right now, thank God we have voice records and emails as evidence, we are tired of calling them, we are waiting for them to send bills before we take action
Very insightful and informative.
Thanks for sharing.
Don’t ever refuse to pay a bill in the U.K., even if you think it’s wrong. You pay then contest it. You may get away with it once but you won’t win the next time. Sometimes if you request for a reading you will be shocked the bill will be double than the estimated bill.
I get your point and I was aware of that. That’s why I didn’t even start any payment at all, they didn’t have my account details, so I missed no payment which is when it’ll affect my credit score. The estimated bill is ridiculously so high for a family of 2 and there’s no way our actual reading will exceed the estimated bill
I had same problem what I did was to contact them, and I read the bill sent it was written Estimated Bill..
In truth an Estimated Bill is not to be paid for , I refused to pay for the estimated bill, I was told to read the meter number I called it out, my dear, the bill reduced drastically..
And then I learnt estimated bill is not your actual bill, request for the actual Bill..
Since they were contesting the readings you were sending, they could have sent someone out to check your meter. I think it was ridiculous they kept going back and forth.
Hi babe,
The best thing is to have a smart metre. No reading required and you can track your usage. Also your letting agent saved you by taking a metre reading at the start of your tenancy.
Good point - knowing your right and calling their bluff goes a long way.
what camera do you use for your content by the way ?
Thanks for sharing, this is an eye opener
Your video is absolutely amazing and encouraging. Many thanks for sharing your experience with us. Most interesting is the link to the Citizens Advice. Do you know anything also about the team called the Unison?
When we move in we requested for prepaid meter and it has been a great help to us. Please get prepaid meter
I’ll try that one soon cos I never knew it can be given easily. One of my sister that their house is on prepaid when they moved in, they’re discouraging them from it and it’s like a battle so I thought they don’t easily give it to people.
Is it the landlord that gave u the prepaid meter?
@@anaobi1461 The energy company and also the gas company gave us same week we requested. It doesn't take long. We refuse to use the previous people own because we realise they were owing.they also refund us what they collected from us ,we cant pay for someone else debt o.
@@IntentionalFavour prepaid is the best. You recharge at your own time and manage ur bill too.
Even our water we sent them reading after they charge us huge amount and it was return.
I did video on my UA-cam on that .
God will see us through .
Love you sis.
You need to check your credit score and history and be sure they have not put marks of missed payment on your credit file. If they have, you need to take it up with them
Of course, it didn’t affect it. I was careful not to start any payment first and stop or miss a payment, it would affect the credit score then…
Check your Experian or Credit Karma file. It’s always best to verify/confirm in this country
Thank you for this information, i really needed at this time since i will be moving soon and i dont know how all this hills work
Glad it was helpful! 🤍
Fantastic... Knowledge is power if you will need to stand your right.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. Please between prepayment and credit meters which one is preferable to use?
I can't suffer with estimated billing in Nigeria and do same in the UK. It won't work. I had to insist on prepaid meter from British Gas.
Exactly 💯
Don't know they can easily give prepaid oo. It's not so common though. I know someone that uses it, but said they're always trying to sway them away from using it and I thought that only those on it can continue. Thanks for letting me know 🤠
Prepaid meter rate is way more expensive than monthly/quareterly rate. Also being a tenant, you will be breaking one of your tenancy agreements if you changed your meter without your landlord’s consent. You can ask the utility company to send/email you your monthly/quarterly bill which will be based on your actual usage. You can then pay up for the period usage on the receipt of your bill.
Just go for pay as you go makes your life easy
Just stumbled into your video. Mine is exactly a similar case as yours, just that it's gas. I just spoke with citizens advice this morning concerning the issue.
Right on 👍
Awwwwww sister is that u? We met at AmC Manchester canon Anochies dedication
So with the estimated bill, they actually credit you the excess when you are leaving the property after the final reading has been taken. It happened to me.
Thank you for sharing, Favour. ❤
Can you please share the link to your background wall art?
They look so beautiful.
Thank you ☺️
I got them from Temu
Nice one ❤
My story exactly in terms of bad correspondence
You should have the electricity company to tell them the reading, not your house agent. The agent has no power on anything to do electricity or gas bill.
Did you really watch and listened to the video?
British gas is good for me because I’m paying 102£ every month for electricity and gas
Thank God you knew your rightooooo , 😊😊
Thank you for this. I learnt from it. Thank you
Glad it was helpful 😊
You guys really fought so hard for what you knew was really wrong.
They would always claim they are right. Imagine less than a thousand pounds at least. O di egwu!
Don’t mind them..
Just earned a subscriber ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Welcome to the family ❤️
Is it advisable to get a smart meter reading or send a general house reading in the UK please?
Please what is the name of company abeg so we jump am pas.
Nice one..a quick one Sister...is it acceptable for African kids to greet publicly in African way (kneeling, bowing etc.) here in the UK?...without Authorities frowning at it
Why not? It's your culture. No one stops positive cultural practice. Even oyinbo dey kneel.
Make una live una life to the fullest for abroad ooo.
Absolutely acceptable. It’s their culture and in as much as this country frowns at some things, they respect people’s cultures and values.
Please let me go and charge OVO to court
Some of these utility companies deserve that oo 😂
Wetin OVO use my eye see...hmnnnn.
My sister OVO are just so so hrtless
Awesome
Even the 900 was still much. They came for me at the end, and they arrived at 300 pounds.
Wow! 😳
Is the provider EON please....
You were just lucky, sometimes it affects your credit rating and that stays on your records for six years.
That’s why We didn’t set up direct debit, cos if we did and missed a payment, it’ll affect the credit score.
Whom doid you think was paying?
Smart metre is terrible!!!
Please what gas and electricity company is the best?
Hi,

Is it possible to know the energy company you are using right now or if you can recommend anyone. I'm paying too much energy bills and I want to change my energy company.
Hi,

When I pack in early March this year. My bills was 500p was it much. Everything inclusive.
Get prepaid meter.
That’s usually more expensive in the long run
@@daliaa5294No more! They are now the same charges since June, 2023
Just for ur information, Prepaid metre is the most expensive of all bills as they charge you in excess of usage and once you go on prepaid metre, you prevent yourself from having any evidence of proof of utility bill with address on for any sort of financed applications. You will also find it difficult in the future to switch back to a normal billed metre.
@@khadijascorner. I totally disagree as you can access your bills online like any other e-bills! Prices of charges are now the same since early summer 2023, this is a fact. There was a legislature that was approved and came into usage in summer.
Is this EDF 😂I suffered in their hands
OMG! Yes, that means they have a very bad record oo 😳
@@IntentionalFavour Yh they were literally forcing me to get a smart meter installed. Meanwhile a colleague had already told me their smart meters they install are always faulty so I declined
EDF is mad always😮
They refused to let me know the bills company name and I don’t even know the name of the water and gas company
According to citizens advice you have the right to switch your energy supplier if you’re renting unless your rent is bills inclusive. So you are well within your right to request to know your energy supplier and switch if you want to so you don't end up paying for what some else uses or vice versa .
@@chisomsonia8662 thanks for this
Exactly. You have the right to know your energy supplier and to switch. You can call Citizens Advice..
Do you think smart meter is better?
Of course
My landlord told me that the bills company gives them out bills and they will split it into 3 because there are 3 flats in the house. Do you think it’s alright?
I’m going to be 3months there
That’s kinda unfair. Each flat should pay for what they use.
Exactly that’s what I said
Because I hardly sleep at home I do night shifts for like 6fays in a week and I work during the day sometimes too
@@tifescorner6836 call Citizens Advice please and here what they’ll advice
As a landylady, I suggest you check who's name shows up on the utility bills. For you to be told that you split the bills between the 3 flats, it makes me question if your landlord has the right insurance and if has declared informed the council too about the 3 flats under one roof as multiple occupancy dwelling. I also wouldn't be surprised to know that either your landlord lives next door and bypassed the utility supply from their house to yours to recover the usage charges. Landlord relatives could also be occupying one of the other sub-letted flats still for you to cough up the utility charges. Your right is to nose around and do your own investigation. If you owe and move out, the council will track you by NI number for the debt. That's my advice.
@@khadijascorner. thank you so much for this
I will call the energy company and give them my meter number.
Thankfully I disturbed them to give me a picture of my meter details when I moved in
Same happened to me as well, they said it was a mistake from then that their was a period we were not appropriately billed. Guess I can share my own story as well.
I sight you sis❤
The £80+ you're paying, is it plus gas and electricity or just electricity? Please clearify
It’s both gas and electricity
Eheeen, wow, i need to do something about mine then, £80 is not even enough for gas and is just me and my husband and we don't use heater as such, because once we heat up the house, that's it for the day, sometimes we don't use heater self, we are spending 150 to 170 on gas and electricity monthly. Is too much honestly
@@IntentionalFavour thank you for your response
How can i reach out to you?
Follow me on Instagram @intentionalfavour and send me a dm
Hi I dont have an insta , how can I reach you?
Uk is nor a village😂
Please don’t give people wrong advice about social services. I am a social worker and we don’t just choose families randomly. You may have done something wrong to get social services to be involved with your children. Remember, U.K. don’t delete any records until 25 years and you may get away with it once but if you happen to be involved again, your previous record will be pulled out and why involve your children with social workers creating a record that will go on their university records.
What wrong advice did I give people about social services in this video please?
@@IntentionalFavour I meant the threatening part by social services. In fact if you ever get involved just do what they are telling you to do till they close.
@@angelakwaramba9752 I was talking about people panicking or feeling threatened when they get a call from social services. I simply advised that if they know their rights and know they did nothing wrong, there’s nothing to be afraid of. I guess you’re new to my channel, I’m a social worker too and if you check my videos, you’ll understand the context of the statement in the video. Migrants are so scared of social workers.
