I understand that Jewish beliefs have similar beliefs as Islamic beliefs and modesty is present in both.
I'm Muslim and wear hijab and my sister who is not Muslim asked if I could just wear a wig because my hair would still be covered however in Islam wearing a wig defeats the purpose of coving the hair because hair is still shown if your wearing a wig.
I have to look to see if you explain this different

I can try to explain. Married jewish women always wore scarves. We still do today. But, since some Jews moved into Europe, there were laws against us, as minorities and foreigners living there.
The change from scarves to wigs came from trying to fit in better, in European countries which already had discriminatory laws against Jews.
Because in Judaism, the only requirement is to keep your hair for your husband. So, we can cover our hair with anything! A hat, scarf, wig, etc. As long as our real hair is saved for our husband.
In the Muslim world, Jewish women do not wear wigs, because in a Muslim country, nobody would look at a Jewish woman in a weird way for wearing a head scarf!! This isn't "odd" in the Muslim world. It's acceptable 😊
So the wig thing really only developed while some Jews moved into European countries, as a minority, to look more "normal" there. If that makes sense.
And the wig doesn't break the Jewish law, so its acceptable. I hope this helps give more context 😊

As Orthodox Christian we wear scarfs when we pray at home and in the Church. The reason we do that first of all is for modestly and it’s appropriate in front of God to appear with a scarf since the woman is created for the man. Second to avoid any seduction. Now I don’t understand the thing with the wig since you might appear attractive. It’s like a real hair. And all the point we need the covering is pointless if you are appearing the same way. Though we wear it only when we pray and in the Church but our ancestors 2-3 generations prior actually wore scarfs all the daytime after marriage.

This is a great question and one that gets asked pretty often!
The answer is that the question is usually incorrect- the purpose of covering a woman’s hair is not to hide her beauty or make her less attractive!
There are parts of a man and woman’s body which are considered “Ervah” or “Nakedness”. These areas must be covered. One such area is a woman’s hair - once she is married, the beautiful custom is that only her husband and direct family can see her real hair. It makes the real hair something special and a part of the relationship within the marriage.
However, there is no issue with covering your hair with a beautiful wig! As long as the “Ervah” is covered :)

Jewish women are NOT wearing wigs to make themselves unattractive or ugly. Or modest to men. Or ugly to men.
So your argument is completely irrelevant, makes zero sense, and is not based on anything....lol
Covering hair is for the reason of marriage. In marriage, men and women both have laws to follow. This is one of them. To preserve the marriage intimacy and closeness. It has nothing to do with attractiveness to other men.

So, far as I can understand, the rule is you keep your "real hair" for your husband and family, and cover for public, because your "real hair" is a more intimate thing? This is fine, BUT, for most orthodox women I have seen, their wigs are more beautiful and attractive, and no one else necessarily knows you are keeping your hair covered- so you are artificially beautiful, and attracting the attention of strangers and then you take off that extraordinary beauty for your husband to reveal a more average beauty? I'm sure every husband feels his wife is the most beautiful regardless, but does anyone else find this jarring?

The reason you have to cover your hair when u get married is because hair becomes erva. It becomes another private part that you only keep between you and your spouse. Anything that covers your private parts are fine as long as it fully covers them. So a wig or a scarf both do the same job.

@@Jessicaro the laws of modesty and laws of covering your hair are different in Judaism. Laws of modesty for a women are to cover your elbows, neckline, not to wear tight clothes, loud colors, no pants etc. they are universal for all women regardless of being married. Modesty also applies to how someone acts. You can’t change what is or what isn’t modest otherwise it would apply to everyone including not married people. Hair becomes something private between a woman and her husband. One of the reasons is because a women realizes her power as a woman once she gets married. There are many reasons why this realization is a reason for women to cover her hair and if you wanna learn you should do the research. Private does not mean modest. Hair is not immodest. If a Muslim persons reason of covering hair is to keep it private and they consider that being modest then they have their own definition. You shouldn’t compare two completely different religions just because they have similar customs. The reasons and the definitions are not the same.

      1) Everyone in the Jewish community knows a wig vs real hair.
      2) The purpose of covering her own hair is to save her real, true self for her husband only. So if a woman wears a scarf, hat, or wig... this all covers her hair in public and does the job.
      3) The point of covering hair is NOT to make yourself modest or less attractive. It is purely to save your real hair, your real self, for your husband.
A single, beautiful Jewish woman doesn't need to cover her hair, because the reason for covering is NOT modesty. It is to save your real hair for your marriage.
Both husband and wife have rules in a Jewish marriage to keep the marriage intimate, and connected.
Maybe this helps: a woman who wears makeup everyday in public, still looks like herself, right??
But in private, her husband sees her TRUE face, without makeup.
      This creates vulnerability and intimacy.
The makeup can match her skin, yes. But it's still NOT her face. She's still in some form of mask...
Most Jewish women by me wear a scarf. Not a wig. The wig thing started when Jews moved into Europe, and were persecuted there, so they tried to look more "normal" in a wig than a scarf... But ANY covering fulfills the concept. To save your real, true self, for husband only. And to put a barrier in public.

@@Gavrielle_Am_Yisrael_Chai This is just my take. And to each their own.
How are wigs any different or not even better than your natural hair?
A wig can be a stylish upgrade to your look, just same as make up it is used to enhance beauty esp if your hair is frizzy, untamed, or unmanageable! Using professional straight hair wigs is like dressing up, & not modesty.
If God wanted you to wear a wig he would just say it clearly. Put a wig! Not to cover hair whether it’s yours, or a wig. It’s still hair and any hair on the head must be covered..
Every human being who needs to cover their head for whatever reason, use some type of fiber or fabric, for the most part. Unless they are trying to deal with hair loss or beautify, they use wigs.

@@Lemonzest19 Thank you for sharing with me. What you say does make sense. I use a tichel more than I do anything else especially at home as I feel it's more in line with what G.od wants me to do.
But I do not want to condemn others who choose a wig when going out in public with their children as a wig would not draw unnecessary attention to the fact we are a Jew.
Especially in today's world where so many want us dead.
I am not afraid to wear a tichel in public or for anyone to know Im a Jew but for others who feel safer wearing a wig to blend in to avoid evil eyes then I can understand their choice too.
In the end it's between them & their husband's & G.od & we just have to try our best to do what's right with love in our hearts.
Thank you again for kindly sharing your opinion with me. Shalom friend

It has become a vital necessity for me. When my husband wants me to go out with him on 5 minutes notice , he says, "OK, Time to rock n roll. Throw on your wig and let's go!" NO worries. So, it technically doesn't matter what she covers her hair with, as long as her hair is saved for her husband 😊
Also, a Jewish woman would only be with a Jewish man. And in the community, we can tell who is married vs who isn't. And who is in a wig vs who isn't. It's very clear in the community.

Let's say, hypothetically speaking, a woman at the end of her life, with days to hours to live, cannot bear to wear her wig/head covering. We all know many changes happen in the very last moments of life. What happens with her loved ones? Do they try to convince her to cover her head, or let her be comfortable in her final days/moments? To explain better, let's assume she wants nothing on her head.
