- Gabriola Bluffs Freediving 2022 (Octopus!)
On this adventure I meet up with @AquaticMonkey and we spent an evening in Chemainus and dove the World War 2 dry-docks. Clayton found an octopus in a bottle which was a super cool thing to witness. The Next day we explored Newcastle Island and searched around for old bottles before heading over to Gabriola Island to dive the iconic Bluffs. It was a weekend to remember!

I just noticed the octopus at 4:12 after proof watching the video before making it live on UA-cam. Makes me wonder how many I have missed in the past! It must have been feeding on those squid eggs. Neat!
thats wild, I think i have a clip of the egg mass to ill look when i edit my perspective of this dive!
@@AquaticMonkey do it up man! I'd be interested to see if you see him.
hard to believe its been over a year since this! Your vids are coming up again in recommended and man its so fun to watch again. I'm pretty excited to look back in 10 years to watch these!
Yeah man time flies. I need to re-watch my own content. Might find some inspiration haha. That was a fun trip, I'll watch that one later on today too.
Appreciate the words man, means a lot from you! and wow your clip of that octo!
No worries dude. Key board warriors are the worst! And thanks! Sorry again for hogging the shot.
@@PNWSamson haha not at all
Cool footage about that octopus! Thanks for sharing. Be safe, and much blessings to you, Chris, and your family.
Thanks and back to you and your fam! Cheers man.
Keep the videos coming. I love them. Man that light is bright. I’m going to have to get one. Can you send me info on your buddy’s dive shop and and I’ll get one. Love that octopus footage.
Thanks man! I believe Divingsports is now sold out of our Green Sea 2500 but they are now selling out 3000. For filming, the 2500 is a better option. I have a couple at my place, you can shoot me a message on Instagram or something and we can try and line something up if you'd like! No pressure though.
Always look forward to watch your videos while having breakfast before work! Always puts me in a relaxed mood for the day! Thanks for all you do! Please don’t let the critics bother you! Matt
Thanks man! I don't let it sweat me for the most part. The overwhelming majority of people are positive and that's all that matters. Appreciate the words man!
Another great video Chris! Great shot of you by Clayton. You filmed a wild mermaid too. You're going to be rich!
I know eh! Too bad I didn't have my speargun! Haha jk
You'll get her/it next time!!
@@WAFishQuest If she doesn't get you first🧜🏻♀️, mermaids are known to be dangerous to fishermen 😏
Great upload like usual..... 👍
Thanks man! Happy to see you're still watching!
I wonder what Van Isle Diving was like back in Cousteau's exploring days when he put the island on his top 10 worldwide list...before we messed it up, musta been unreal!
Yeah man I often ponder the same question. I recently watched a documentary on Cousteau's life and I guess he became pretty bitter in his later years. He saw beautiful ecosystems become wastelands. Really depressing actually. I'm sure what I get to witness is a small fraction compared to what once was and even what we have now is going downhill...
Another great video, above and below the water. That little octopus is fine, swam away and will quickly find a natural home. People sometimes are so sensitive about ridiculous things...
Agreed man! I'm sure those people don't give Clayton props for all the garbage he cleans up but the second they see something they don't like out comes the guns. People just like getting upset. Pretty sad really.
@@PNWSamson Ya good point...!
Great video man! nice response to the comments about the octopus
Thanks man! And cheers. People just like getting upset about stuff without thinking about the big picture.
Wow those bluffs are amazing! Another great video. I think that fish is a 3 spine stickleback but I'm not sure.
Thanks man! And it's a great spot. Super beautiful.
also very interested in jigging around nanaimo or gabriola
Yeah, there are definitely some good spots for that too.
very good vids
Thanks man!
So cool to see what's under the water, especially in the pnw, I think a lot of people just look at the surface of a bay where the ocean and think that it's completely lifeless or that nothing can live there, love these free diving videos!
Thanks! And for sure man. I grew up angling and I was blown away when I saw everything first hand. It's truly amazing stuff! Happy you're liking the content man!
Those rainbows were totally amazing and so worth being a part of nature!
I agree. It was the perfect way for us to end the dive. I wish we could have touched the end though!! Haha
Nice episode! Plenty of time to sleep when we die. I'd highly recommend "Whales to Whelks" for a comprehensive ID book. A forestry professor once told me when you know the names of everything in the forest, it's like walking into a party where you know all the people. Same in the ocean, the human mind just finds comfort in naming things.
I could see that for sure, great analogy. And I'm with you there, funny that my rest day was going to be spent working around the house haha. Thanks for the recommendation!
I had an argument with my gf at the Dinghy Dock once. Weird vibes for sure. lol
Haha yeah man. It was such a great place at one point. The place was empty and the staff seemed very inconvenienced with our business. We all collectively felt the same way so we left. First time I think I've done that. Oh well, Pat O'Briens menu was better anyway!
Amazing shots as always, appreciate your work guy!
Thanks man, happy to know people enjoy the content!
A friend lived on Gabriola and we used to go looking for oysters and clams over 20 years ago. It was good then not sure if its thee same now?
Yep! Still some solid oyster beds around. I might go over and look for geoduck someday soon too. They are open on the east side of Gab.
👍👍
🤙
You got me with octopus, absolutely fascinating animals. On a side note: Clay plant pots of appropriate size and shape make great overnight octopus traps, and it takes a huge pump and a lot of garden hoses to get fresh seawater up to the house and back to the sea if you can't afford an aquarium chiller, haha, tried it years ago and failed. haha
seems like a lot of work lol!
Good to know! About the clay pots. That's funny, my friend the other day was wondering what it would take to have a pet octopus. I figured a continuous supply of fresh ocean water. I guess unless you're living on the ocean that wouldn't be possible.
I found you via Washington FishQuest, my fav channel.
Thanks for the kind words Mark! Chris's channel is spectacular. I always watch him on my big screen.
Thanks guys! And I agree Mark, Washington Fish Quest is awesome. My Favorite local channel too!
@@WAFishQuest Did you guys talk bout those King Crabs I mentioned in comments a couple months back? I just watched one his videos on Puget Sound King Crab and it was excellent. A family production to table, love it!
What is the hear you are wearing around your neck. White u shape necklace. What is the purpose? Thank you.
I think that is neck weight, I see alot of people wear it in freediving competition, I heard it might help save some energy for the duck dive, but maybe not ture
Yeah exactly, It's a neck weight. Having all the weight on your belt can result in a sore back. Especially with the amount we wear with our 7mm suits. The neck weight kindof distributes the weight a little easier over your body and trims you out. I'm sure it also helps with the duck dive too! Keeps your head down and straightens out the freefall.
Thank you for the info and tips. I may have to try this out....again always love the content and messages of sustainability and the cleanups. Hopefully the family and I will be able to attend one of the group effort beach cleanup ups. Always rewarding knowing that we have left the beaches and waters cleaner then b4. Thank you for all you do...everyone.
One planet, lots of love.
@@KKM_108 haha no worries at all man. Going on the dives is a blast and I love educating. My work life spills over into my hobbies I guess. The beach clean ups are also a great time and very rewarding for sure. We'll cross paths one of these days!
Do you have to equalize when your free diving?
You do. You don't really have to worry about the bends though!
