  • Dodd Narrows Freediving (High Current Passage) Nanaimo, British Columbia
    A group of us hiked down the Cable Trail in Cedar, British Columbia and went freediving in the notorious Dodd Narrows rapids in Nanaimo, British Columbia. There, we were welcomed by kelp, sea anemone, sea lion, lingcod, jellyfish, greenling and other various life. On the way out, we hand picked some sea urchin and called it a day. WHAT A DIVE!!

    Tough place to make a living. Those Narrows. Glad those winter gloves are still working. Thanks for taking us along, the nudibranch was awesome!

      No worries man. And yeah, stuck between a rock and a hard place. Balancing between a job I enjoy and a place I want to live. Family first so we will have to reassess this come April. All good!

    Very cool, great scenery, must be a little daunting knowing a boat could blast through at anytime...

      Yeah, but we were pretty cautious. We spaced ourselves apart so we could keep an eye on traffic from both sides. You can often hear them while they are approaching from far away but it's still in the back of your mind. I swim towards the shallower rocks when I come up just out of being paranoid.

    I’m going to have to try urchin. How do you prepare them and what kind of sauce. Raw right? I’ve tried it while diving but how about at the dinner table.

      @PNWSamson  Рік тому

      I just eat one raw on shore. It's good protein, which I don't get enough of, and loaded with nutrients from all the kelp they eat. I've made pasta sauce and that was good. They are good on white sticky rice and also mixed in with eggs. Downside, they don't keep well so you have to eat them pretty quickly.

      It's amazing! In the winter on a low current day I would recommend it hands down! Just keep someone on the surface watching out!

    Around the 5 min mark u said, "having a healthy respect for places like this ensures i'll see my kids grow old". What did u mean by this? :) Cheers!

      If I start becoming reckless I won't be around very long. I'll miss out on a lot. I also don't want my kids to grow up without a dad. You gotta be careful!

    Pretty sure that was a ling cod, not a cabezon.....but thanks for the tour....I'm always on the surface, never underneath, so you guys let me see what I'm always going over...thanks

      Yeah no worries! I'm hoping to get back there soon. I don't think I mentioned Cabezon in the video? I'm usually spot on with my fish identification though.

      Haha yeah. They were training. Sending people down the current and retrieving them from a boat. Nice to see them on the water. They were from the Ladysmith fire department.

      Good man! I should have gotten the smaller size but that's my own fault. I wish they were kevlar though as they seed to last the longest.

    I've been to Dodd Narrows in the fishing boat, timing is everything like Porlier Pass as well. Good dive!

      Yeah true that. I hate dropping lures in the current too. I don't even want to think about the amount of $$$ I've lost to rocks below.

      Thanks man and definitely. Our home is still in Nanaimo and we'll be bouncing between the two until April but the majority of our time will be on the mainland. Sucks, but with a Monday to Friday schedule and place to stay it just makes sense.
