  • Freediving Port Alberni | British Columbia, Canada
    Predicting visibility is near impossible around British Columbia. I try and make informed and educated guesses but sometime I feel like tossing a coin is a better bet. Oh well, hope for the best and plan for the worst! On this episode, Brian and I dive China Creek in Port Alberni and I head to the Parksville skatepark with the family.

    Tandem drops into the abyss blackness .....eeeee seems very stressful in a new location in bad weather?! Amazing he found his GoPro. Also hope all was fine with Brian{??} in yellow rain gear behind ha as he bit it going over logs ....he was there one second then gone, haha. Great video and way to get brownee points with the kiddos haha.
    p.s. 'please' wear 'your' own boarding helmet and pads--especially wrist protection as you have to work and 'dive' of course and you do not need an unnecessary injury daaaaddd. Sound like a mutha hen, but am ok with that haha.

      Haha your not wrong. I'm mostly worried about my ankles now a days. I've hurt them once since and diving and kicking with those long fins was very painful and almost not even possible. I got pretty good at falling but I know I'm not invincible haha. Yes, brain went down but we both had a good laugh after reviewing the footage lol. He was uninjured so all is good! And the kids loved the donuts, I gotta make up for being gone all afternoon somehow haha. Usually with freediving it's 1 up 1 down protocol but we were shallow enough to go down together safely! 🙂

      Yeah man true! A shot of someone freediving in conditions like that would make a great photo. I like videography but taking some photos from time to time can't hurt. That was second try! Was pretty stoked to land that one haha. Cheers.

    Nice video especially given the conditions. That blob is probably a "Glassy Tunicate". I suppose it might also be a sponge of some sort like a "Retractable Nipple Sponge". Both ids just from looking at the pictures in Lamb and Hanby.

    Great video, crazy weather above water, but lots of life below. I think that logging boat was a Dozer, prop would spin 360 degrees with powerful diesel engines for moving logs around, and with a super deep draft they were impossible to roll over, wonder how that one sank…keep the vids coming…

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks man and great information. Figured that's what it was for but didn't know the technical name for em. Sounds like a fun job! And agreed, I was wondering myself. Doesn't look like there is an engine or anything left so I wonder if it was stripped and sank on purpose? I'll have to do some research. Great spot non the less!

    Great footage from both of you! Is that Port Alberni spot a scout for spearfishing when the season opens up? Are Wolf Eels on the menu? I've only seen one and they are gnarly looking critters, but if their tasty, I'm all in!! Also, your shots of the coast and the Island never get old, It's like visiting an old friend for me, and I can't help but smile and check faces for anyone I know! lol

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  2 роки тому +2

      Haha nice! And thanks, Brians a cinematographer so he's got lots of great tricks up his sleeve. He's been helping me out and giving me some advice. Great guy. You can spearfish in the Alberni inlet but that spots at a popular SCUBA spot. Kindof like Madrona point, personally I'll leave it alone out of respect for them. With that said, I do plan on exploring the inlet much more and try to find some hidden gems! Wolf eel are closed as they were hunted to critical levels. They are still heavily poached so there populations are not doing great. Pretty sad but they are still awesome to dive with! I rarely see them so it's always a treat.

    Interesting that you encountered similar visibility conditions to me. I had one day of fantastic viz followed the next week by a plankton bloom and really bad viz. I had the same thing happen last year around May when we were going to dive the Nakaya. One day some of the best viz ever and a few days later a plankton bloom. I suspect this sequence isn't random.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  2 роки тому +1

      True man, the quite before the storm... Seems like late March/early April is the best visibility but immediately followed by the worst. Always have to enjoy it while it lasts!

    I wonder if the disease affecting starfish is because the sunlight can't penetrate through the algae murk to bring it's benefits, like how we need vitamin d from the sun.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately it's a little more complicated than that. The pathogen responsible for the waste syndrome has been recorded in our waters for over 100 years. Unfortunately, with the additional stress of warming waters, sunstar are unable to cope with the virus and are succumbing to its affects. Although the algae is unfavorable for diving, the sea life thrive on it. Our water is murky but also jammed with nutrients as a result! Pretty neat, but humans are throwing a wrench in the ecosystem and they can no longer cope.

    Sweet vid, I tried finding a wreck out there last year but failed. How deep was that one, and was it closer to the wall? Thanks!

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  2 роки тому

      No worries! It wasn't deep at all, maybe 6-7m if that? It was fairly close to the wall, and a fairly short swim from the beach. I believe there is a second wreck there much deeper and I heard there is a mooring hooked up to it! Could be wrong about that though.
