To all conductors of orchestras out there.....sorry....

It’s going to be okay conductors, I promise.
When are you guys restocking merch on the website???
All that time spent practicing how to fake it may as well be practicing how to actually play.

That happened to John Cage... he then wrote a piece based on this. It's called 4:33.

Actors pretending to be musicians need this.
Totally, it’s so obvious they have no idea what they’re doing in kovies😂😂
Drives me crazy!
For actors, the hardest instrument to fake-play is violin. I usually go into hysterics when I see an actor pretending to "play" the violin! The easiest instrument to fake might be one in the wind family (as long as the cameras don't point too much at the fingers). It's easy to tell fake-piano players by watching the ridiculous expressions on their faces, or uncoordinated arm and body movements.
Darrel Lict, I’m not admitting anything, but yes, it seems faking on a clarinet is much easier than a stringed instrument.
in a taiwanese film called secret, the pianists played very convincingly. however some of them were actual musicians, and they improvised chopin's pieces.
Ling Ling doesn't even need to fake in orchestra, the orchestra is the one faking
Ling Ling can play the whole orchestra while the others aren't playing the notes

It sounds like they've tricked everyone into practicing: 1) know correct bowings/string crossings, 2) know correct rhythms, 3) know correct fingerings/shifts, 4) do all of these enough to be confident. Surprise! You've just practiced!
Haha true
Watching this, I was thinking "wouldn't practicing be less work?"
werelemur1138 😂
You may be confident during the practice session but during performance you may feel less confident and don't want to screw up so you fake it.
the difference is if you are at rehearsal and you kind of know the piece so you know the bowings and such, and you can listen for shifts or you know them too, but your fingerings/intonation/etc. are off and you didn’t practice so you have to fake it.
The orchestra I’m in had a very EMBARRISING moment in a concert. We all faked it.

This video saved my 10 year old daughter! Thank you so much! She has worked very hard and this year made it into the intermediate youth orchestra in our city. She's at the far back of the first violins and at the front of the stage where everyone can see her. She's also younger than most of the others and small for her age so her toes barely touch the floor from her chair. Tonight the beginner orchestra finished and left the stage and the intermediate filed on. Somewhere in the process of trying to get herself, her violin, and her binder of music settled, the binder burst open and the music all went onto the floor! She hurriedly gathered it up and ended up just pulling out the music for each piece from a pile on the floor. She was a little off a couple times in the first page of music but I assumed it was just from the stress of her binder explosion and it wasn't enough that anyone else would probably notice. After that, she was fine. Well, it turns out the first page of her music totally disappeared. She was obviously very familiar with the piece but hadn't memorized it. So she faked her way through until they got to the second page. She's an avid TwoSet fan so has watched this a few times and we're both so grateful to you for saving an eager young violin student!

@@brendonmanning7280 I have this little story from high school a few months ago. So I attend a Music High School (no it's not like a TV drama, and I'm the only one who randomly breaks into song in the hallways) and we have various musical groups that practice during instrument class, which is 2 hours on monday.
So I am a part of such a group, which is basically a chamber music group with a couple of violins, a cello, a trumpet, a piano and recently even a flute. This year, a violinist friend of mine has been wanting to join us since she did play with our group on certain occasions last year, but the self-centered conductor of the orchestra group (which she is formally a part of) would pester her not to transfer, along with the teacher who takes care of such things. A bit of drama ensued between our chamber group teacher and the conductor, and finally one day I have reserved a seat for that friend and she comes into the bus with a "shit just happened" look on her face.
Around that time the tension between all parties interested and involved in that transfer (which by the way she had every right to make) was at its apex. It was Monday, and she had to attend orchestra rehearsal rather than our own cozy friendly and all around great group. During that class, the conductor said the following to her, who was playing the second violin part. "Hey, (name), would you perhaps like to *transfer* to the first violins?" A bit taken aback, wary, and as she put it recently, "loath to give up the easiest part in the orchestra, which I don't like to play in anyway" she timidly refused, saying "Uhm... no, I'm not sure I could handle that." His sarcastic reply was as follows : "Oh, at least you're self-aware." Those words were spoken by the conductor to a very self-conscious girl in front of the whole orchestra.
We've been meming the incident ever since.
me sightreading this year. whenever i got completely lost because i accidentally counted ahead or had zoned out and didnt hear the measure we were about to play i would just look up and give my conductor a look and she would shout out the measure or make everyone stop playing haha

At one point recently, my friend at I both played at a school assembly (he's in band, I'm in orchestra), but he later told me that his saxophone wasn't working and wouldn't make any noise, so he had to fake playing for the entire show.
There's this kid in my orchestra, he isn't very good and I've seen him fake play several times and he exaggerates his bow movements when he fake plays and it's the funniest thing ever. His body literally moves with the bow. 😂
Sorry I know this is random but I thought I'd share this bc this video reminded me of it 😂

when i was in band in high school, there were about 10 trumpet players equally split before first and second and sometimes a few were shifted to third. I am a double bassist so I always carry a German bow and a French bow. I like playing with the french bow but when I do not know my parts I just play with the german bow. I have never put rosin on the german bow so when I play it doesn't sound like anything so no one notices lol

Oh we already do, so it’s not us that sounds bad
bold of you to assume violas don't just fake everything anyway
Okay so usually support jokes on instruments but that actually hurt even if it should not hurt me at all. It is just that I play viola as well to help in one of the orchestras and usually I am the first one to actually know what to play and how to play it while others still practise and once I had to like just sit and wait after every 3 minutes for an hour because the cellos could not do their more difficulte part in the "waltz of flowers".
You might just as well play the correct notes...
It will fun if everyone fake jajajajj
Yeah. Faking it well looks harder than playing it badly.
The next step is to learn how to fake a Solo Violin piece !
Yeah, I might as well just play perfectly. All my problems are solved!
yes and no. yes faking sounds hard when explained but if you have played for quite some time it becomes second nature and your mind and arms just kind of go on autopilot.
but also no to just playing the correct notes. im not sure if you play a string instrument but if you dont, its important to know that string instruments are difficult for a myriad of reasons but a big one is that its not like guitar where you have frets or a woodwind/brass-wind where you have keys to touch or whatever and you just have to focus on your hand position as well as your breath, depending on the instrument. with violin, viola, cello, and bass, we dont have any of that. we have to know exactly where every single note is across the entire violin, and while you can read music very well like most seasoned players, if you are in the middle of a piece and its a fast tempo like presto for example, to go to that high note and then right to the next note and follow the rhythm and melodic contour requires so much brain power because if you mess up that one note, your rhythm can easily be thrown off which then means more missed notes. and because of our instrument, if you move your finger the smallest bit on the string, you easily fall out of tune. so to not only move your hand to the correct position and land on the right high note thats on the body of the instrument and therefore harder to reach is a lot to do
My concertmaster’s motto: “fake it till u make it.”
My favourite faking story: my orch was playing Tchaikovsky Serenade for strings op 48. About ten measures in the cello have a super epic - and very simple - c scale. Our conductor changed the fingering and my stand partner got super confused and air bowed the whole thing. Our conductor looked right at us, stopped the whole orchestra, and yelled "Hey! You look like you are FLOATING! GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME! IT'S A SIMPLE C SCALE.. -insert facepalm- look, you're a good cellist, but you need to change the floating. We need a new you"
I am the one faking all the time. I completely fake Mendelssohn symphony 7. (1. part). And those fast notes over two strings? Fuk the tempo 120. Just some random notes on correct strings. And the pizz?Well. Just rihht rythm. Best thing? Nobody ever found out.
Plot twist? I am sitting first row.
