13:25 when that oboe-sounding instrument-- i believe that's called a Suo Na(唢呐)--came in, everyone was defeated-- that actually has a reason. Suo Na has a nickname called "rascal instrument" in Chinese, because it is vERY loud, it can literally cover up an entire orchestra's sound. It is used to play at traditional weddings and funerals and similar traditional important events in China. Someone say that Suo Na "welcomes you to the world, and sends you away."
And the so g he is performing is the most legendary song “ten thousand birds worshipping the Pheonix” which is not easy to play. Very few suona players can perform that song live.
As a Chinese Orchestra Musician, I must agree that the only reason why they weren't able to play was legit cuz of the suo na. It's notoriously loud, but still a beatiful instrument nonetheless.
Well I think that violin girl in the middle is impressive. Imagine all those noise they're making and she can still maintain that stoic face. I mean the one on her right can barely hold her laughter in.😂
Right?! After all, she's an actress and she is literally acting her butt off right there. Maybe they did try to learn and didn't have enough time, dunno.
12:25 There actually is a story reason why she's so intense. In the movie, she did god awful on a history test, and the ancient chinese music band group she wants to be a part of knows that, and won't let her in because she doesn't not much about ancient chinese history. So she is desperate to prove herself to them.
She is playing it correctly tho, it aiNt intense tbh it's just that it's not easy to hit the notes really fast for yangqin players especially beginners like me
Chill out man Its just a movie filmed by guys dont understand music. as I know acters always hold a gun to other guys head tightly in most Hollywood film, do you think it's right posture?
Well, anyone who played violin or an instrument his/her eyes will stumble upon that physical inpossibility as her right hands hold the bow, it is crying from a 1000 miles that she doesen't have a clue how to play the violin...
She can obviously play but definitely in the movie it’s not her actual playing… the force she uses and the sound does not match… but I mean it’s not that cringy…
Omg, I saw this movie in my mandarin class. It was really weird at times. When they preform at the convention, and then the drummer guy with glasses somehow gets rid of his braces and glasses, and all the girls think he's hot
I watched this in Chinese class too!! I didn't learn any instrument and didn't watch any TwoSet at that time so I didn't knew why my friends (that learn music)was cringing so hard. XD
This was presented to us during music class and boy it was hilarious. XD The musicians in our class were watching with frowns and criticizing the instrument scenes to their own circle of friends and I can tell that our music teacher was holding back a smile and laugh the entire time.
I think it is also to highlight the difference between the two student groups. The western orchestra students have straight, refined, scholarly hair that goes with their more formal uniform, but they all look very similar. The Chinese music students all have very indevidual styles that are more pop culture, like the anime ponytails and the braids.
nah most Chinese school have strict rules about dressing up and like hair styles if the hair is like that oh heck you gonna get call out by the teacher and if you dear to go against your teacher, trust me your parents is gonna get a phone call to the school so I don’t think it will be any different in the Chinese music school, also I don’t even know if there is an music school that will allowed student to like these battles, like all of them are gonna get call parents.

12:23 That instrument is the yangqin, or hammer dulcimer. Two oopsies here. 1) The player looks she is just striking the same notes. You can't play chromatics on the yangqin if your mallets just stay at the same spot. 2) Due to the arrangement of the strings on the yangqin, you need the heads of the two mallets to be separated some distance apart, with one held much further away than the other, in order to play the chromatic scale. The heads look like they are striking strings that are too near each other, clearly not in the positioning required to play chromatics.
Isn't she also bringing the mallets way to high up during the clip where it shows only her face, and you see the mallets being brought all the way up, basically to her face, before forcibly being swung all the way back down? (Right at the timeframe you clipped lol 12:23, the clips prior looked more accurate based on what my friend who plays one of those instruments told me) Either way, there is an obvious difference in the clips of the hammer dulcimer where she is playing with very different amounts of force.
@@peterfireflylund its called 扬琴, and yes previously its called 洋琴 because it originates from Italy or somewhere around Europe, but the Chinese creates their own version of the hammer instrument, the type of these instruments arrives in China in the 18th century, not like the others that prolly exist for thousand years already, just like how drums and flutes have different origins and different versions Edit: I just went fact-checking and realised the instrument originates from the middle east, its called a santur (سنتور) by the Persians, it's existence dates back to 600BC, and then only it was only introduced to Europe and then East Asia

@Mark Jeremie San Diego I'm talking about music schools in general. Sorry I did lead to confusion, I didn't notice I constructed the sentence incorrectly.

I think it’s like a meme in China? It should be “Ride a panda to school”, and that’s a running joke on the internet cuz people think Szechuan Province (basically where all the pandas live) has so many pandas and people actually living there are like “yeah we ride pandas to school everyday”.
I would like to share a news The actors of the students of Chinese traditional music, they all have learnt those instruments for years Em...I don't know why there's mistakes on the classical music students
@AJ Covers That doesn't explain holding the bow like a child or not showing even remotely what should be seen... Of course it's a hard piece, that's why you'd never play the solo with several violins, they'd never be in sync. It's bad choices all around.
Nah, the main girl of the classical music is just an actor that can't actually play. Guys can search for the information of the actors if you understand Chinese. The piano boy can actually play, the guzheng girl herself is already a master, the Zhongruan girl (with fluffy brown hair) majored it in the music school. The girl playing the dulcimer and the boy next to her (who plays the drum in the movie but not in this clip) started practicing three months before the movie. It's said the main violin girl also started practicing a lot for it, but obviously no use for a piece like bumblebee lol.
the movie was like the live action mulan.. they were like "notice the traditional chinese instruments!!!" but then they decided to play a western song with traditional instruments..... so much for the message....
Honnestly, as I never went to music school, I just tried to imagine it was my highschool. It was actually pretty easy, because colorful haircuts and originality are for the Artists while the classical look "I'm better than you" are for the ones in the main course (especially the scientists). It really was helpful XD
Most of the Chinese musicians actually have normal haircuts. Those with the anime-y vibes are cosplayers who have a chinese orchestral band outside of school.
Four years later and this gem still makes me laugh and smile on an off day. Thank you TwoSet for all the giggles and also Bret's little imitation of the man's laugh still has me laughing. Thank you for making our lives more joyful! Also Editor-San your work is fantastic!
The characters idolize SING女團 which is kind of like Chinese equivalent to visual kei (I'm oversimplifying/generalizing, yes), so they aspire to be very... fashion forward. That and half of them are weeaboos who love anime figurines. (When I first watched the movie I had to look up what a 'garage kit' was because I'm so not into anime.)
@@SophiaDalke They don't idolize SING. They are what we called "otaku", people who are into anime, manga, and video games, etc. Which is why in the movie those girls were shy away by others because people think they were weirdos. The main didn't want to approach them at first, neither.
Angela Rose I think I know why ppl get impressed by the FOTB and Fur Elise. It’s because it’s fast and fast=professional ( according to the non-musicians ) and Fur Elise is a super famous piece, so yea...not sure but I guess it’s the reason. But for us musicians, FOTB, Canon, and Fur Elise= sacrilegious and awful. The piece itself is so good, to be honest, but it’s super overplayed.
“Do you challenge each other?” Where I went to school, the jazz and the classical department get along pretty well, actually. Not everyone, but there wasn’t any bad blood or anything remotely like this 😂 One of the main reason is that because we often cross paths. We need each other’s help (well.. mostly the jazz department needed tha classical students help, lol). Many times we needed string players or other instruments to help us for recitals, or record a song, etc. I guess we kinda know that all we wanted to do there was to study and pratice, so why bother pissing each other off? We learned from each other, basically. I remember asking a classical student to tutor me for history and theory class. And there was a really good violinist taking a jazz arrangement class as their elective. We just wanted to learn 😂
Music departments pretty much don't do challenges, ever. First, they're too busy practicing to actually have time to do stuff like this. Second, they're all in the same boat. It's not like there is a limited pool of resources and everybody's scrambling for the pieces. It's more like there are just no resources at all, and it's your job to go out and look for them. Music battles do make for great movies. But just like Hollywood's "marching band battles", they're very unrealistic.
Thank you for this comment!! Im not in college or anything, just high school, but I play both jazz and classical Saxophone. I don't think they really interact with many jazz musicians, because any musician you find will most likely be respecting and kind to another type of musician. I obviously don't hate jazz or Classical musicians because I do both...
@@ellajeffres4747 yess that's so true.. besides, what's the point of these kinds of battle anyway? lol. no kind of music is better than the other, because each one holds so much culture and history behind it. it's just odd to have bad blood just because we're playing different things..
I don't know if anyone else feels like this, but whenever I watch one of TwoSet's reaction videos, it always strikes me how there's an intense scene and you start getting into it... and then THEY jump onto the scene😂😂😂 Btw, thank you so much for the incredible number of likes, ya'll!!! You made my day!!!!! :)
That's what Chopin actually said in his letter: How I should like to touch all the strings which not only call up stormy feelings, but also awaken again the songs whose half-dying echo is still flitting on the banks of the Danube-songs which the warriors of King John Sobieski sang! (Dec. 25, 1830.) I think that's where the "battle cry" comes from. 蕭邦:“我愿意唱出一切为愤怒的、奔放的情感所激发的声音,使我的作品(至少一部分)能作为约翰的部队所唱的战歌。战歌已绝响,但它们的回声仍将荡漾在多瑙河两岸。”
Bitter Sweet not trying to defend for the movie or anything, just to clarify it, what the girl said in Chinese actually does translate to battle song. One can interpret it as battle cry but battle song is a more accurate direct translation. The translator of the movie definitely was not paying attention on that wording tho.
guys i found the real quote: Sometimes I can only groan, and suffer, and pour out my despair at the piano. Frederic Chopin (2013). “Chopin's Letters”, p.149, Courier Corporation
"how can he play in time if he is a completely different room" whoa. as a non-classical musician, this is something I never thought about. Makes you think. And that's why I love you guys
Depending on the construction of the school and the vents, sometimes you can actually hear from across the school! My school's practice rooms, band, and orchestra ventilation are part of the same system as each other and our theaters, so you can sometimes hear what everyone else is doing across the building lol
I used to have long hair when playing violin in high school and my hair used to always get in the strings and get stuck, my musical coach had to make me tie my hair up so it wouldn’t get stuck and the girl in the front just- her hair- *SCREAMING IN FRENCH*
In high school we didnt have an orchestra room we had to share with band or chorus and just never have classes at the same time, but I brought the issue up with the principal who legit said to find an empty classroom to practice in, like???? How tf we gonna fit our 3 basses 8 cellos 4 viola 7 second violins and 10 firsts in ONE EMPTY ROOM. I feel like a lot of schook administrators don't really understand the issues musicians (including band and chorus) face when it comes to space. Like all 3 groups need differently shaped rooms to work, chorus needs a long rectangle room, band a thiccer rectangle, and orchestra a square/pentagon shaped room. They dont cater to what musicians need just what they expect them to use.
Well you should also understand the school is running on a budget and they can't just magically construct a room for you guys. That require money time and construction workers and engineers to make. If the school doesn't already have a space for you guys, then it won't even if you complain. Simple as that. You are better off discussing some additional funding so you can rent a place somewhere out side of school.
@@neurofiedyamato8763 they literally just completely renovated the auditorium that was in amazing condition, don't make assumptions my friend. I wouldn't complain if I knew there was no budget for it.
Constructing a entirely new room is different from just renovating though. Unless you want to re-purpose an unused room, which yes that would be comparable. However if it requires expanding the building, then it is a major construction. You need new expanded foundation where the new section would be. That alone means getting large construction vehicles to dig in to the ground. Then the structure of the new building, piping ,electrical wires, and everything else that goes in to a new building. Renovation is by far much simpler. Even the most extreme renovation is just tearing up old walls and ceiling for a new one + other misc things. That's way simpler and cheaper than a new building, which also require additional space too.
Yo my teacher showed this video to the class and everyone except me thought it was THE MOST AMAZING MOVIE SCENE EVER. They even thought Flight of the Bumblebee was a great piece like. . . Excuse me, that is far from being one of the most amazing pieces ever created. Lack of musical knowledge makes a musician cringe and I finally know what TwoSet feels like when watching all these videos Edit: Not saying FOTB is a bad piece. It's just that my (former) classmates acted like it was the only good piece of classical music while the rest are just slow baby "songs" played on "boring" instruments. (One of them even asked why I listened to classical music when it was only for infants) Rimsky-Korsakov did good at making it sound like a swarm of bees though, so good job on his part
TwoSet feels exactly like anyone who controls their profession and on UA-cam they find someone who does it wrong and has no idea. The biggest fun comes when you try to give him advice.
"Ride a panda to sch"…? Also, the only thing missing there is if the academy really DID have a Jazz Department as well, and the whole thing had turned into a *three-way* battle of Bumblebee.
Lil Jatato you dont have to know all the violin or orchestra movies plus this movie is on Netflix its called our shining days and this sene is like close to the end of the movie
America: "We'll battle with our voices and with our dance moves!" China: "We'll mess you up with a violin! You ever experienced tinnitus?!" Edit: I wrote this before I saw her play.... I have now experienced tinnitus.
Lol what's with "Flight of the bumblebee?" Jeez any other type of music could've been much more enjoyable. Even the chinese traditional instruments could've been played some more beautiful and meaningful muisc. Jeez this entire movie really built just for two music departments just to play flight of the bumblebee???
The chinese side has a dulcimer rather than a piano, there are infinitely better things they could have done with it (they sound so cool, using it in flight of the bumblebee as a substitute for a piano is such a waste). I'm not really sure by what metric they "won" but just playing a piece of classical music like the other side (for which it was written), chosen for it's speed, was a big waste of potential.
Is who can’t keep up anymore, not really following metric, the last instrument on the chinese side, it’s not based on any written sheet music, but based off players own ability to play up to their level, so hard for the western side to get the beat in tune, that’s how they won cause the western side can’t keep up anymore at the end
Flight of the bumblebee has been used as "going to court" music in early Egyptian cinema... As I grew up in Egypt every time I hear it I feel in a hurry, now I work in law and every time I go to court it plays in my head... Over playing a piece of music has dangerous consequences on your children, beware.
I'm a Chinese music performer and Flight of the Bumblebee is actually a graded practice piece for some examination boards. It's really common to see Violin pieces like Zigeunerweisen played on the Pipa, the Erhu, etc.
As an asian who watched the movie before, i gotta say that the movie is really good. Those in the chinese instrument department: the girl who played guzheng in this movie learned guzheng since she was 6 and she has already reached grade 10. The 2 other girls who played ruan and pipa are also real musicians too. As for the main actress (the girl who played yangqin), she isn’t a real musician but she went to learned yangqin 3 months before filming the movie :)
It's a SuoNa 唢呐. It's interesting too the choice of music each instrument pick as their battle cry. For the suona it's Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix (the phoenix is the king of the birds in chinese culture) so it's phoenix vs bumblebee. guess who wins? hahaha
3:38 She's starting a music battle. 11:32 It's normal for our hands to go that fast. We have to train our hands to be nimble, cos of certain techniques. Because they are pluck string instruments, if we need to play a long note, our fingers move quickly, so the note sounds as smooth as possible. 12:03 The music battle took place in the hallway. The piano was at the end of the hallway at the Western side.. 13:57 There was a fight between the Western and the Chinese sides, so they put the metal bars to prevent them from interacting so a fight will not break out again. In that school, the Western instruments were prioritized more than the Chinese instruments, it was clear on how the Principal treated the two music groups differently. That's why the Principal looked so distraught when the Western side lost.
I would understand if the actors are not good at playing their instruments because it's not like I'm watching the movie to see spectacular instrument acting. If I wanted to do that then I would just watch a recital instead. And beside finding someone who is good at both acting and playing an instrument is incredibly rare. It's like you want to find a person who is a lawyer and a doctor at the same time
Not really bro. A lot of actors out there can play these instruments and it’s useful on there portfolios, yet they still give it to actors who can’t play but are just more attractive. In my opinion they’re usually not even good at acting anyway
@@Grace-mb8tb finding an actor who can play these instruments may be easy to find. But finding a good actor is not. You also have to consider their background and history before giving them the role. You can't just pick anyone because of their appearance
@@casualanime9108 the actor should be expected to be familiar enough with both the instrument and the piece that they can at least mimic what *should* be seen. You dont need an actor that can sing to play a singer, but they still need to learn the lyrics for lip syncing. Imagine watching a singer but their mouth movement never matched what you hear. It destroys suspension of disbelief. That's basically what is going on here.

Chopin wrote in his diary on July 26, 1847: "I was honoured to meet my fellow countryman, the politician Giuseppe Mazzini, who is in exile here in London. He dreams of Italian unification and wants to kick out the Austrian Empire, which ‘imprisons’ most of northern Italy. He wants me to write a patriotic hymn to stir the people. The people, whether I like it or not, believe my music is their battle cry. They think most of my operas have a revolutionary meaning, but I write mostly to take opera to another level. I share Mazzini’s dream of a free, united Italy. I’m just not sure it’s going to happen soon or that my music will usher it in."

Does the 洋琴 even count as Chinese? It is clearly a variation of the European hammered dulcimer. 洋 even means “foreign”.
@@peterfireflylund its called 扬琴, and yes previously its called 洋琴 because it originates from Italy or somewhere around Europe, but the Chinese creates their own version of the hammer instrument, the type of these instruments arrives in China in the 18th century, not like the others that prolly exist for thousand years already, just like how drums and flutes have different origins and different versions
Edit: I just went fact-checking and realised the instrument originates from the middle east, its called a santur (سنتور) by the Persians, it's existence dates back to 600BC, and then only it was only introduced to Europe and then East Asia
@@hotpotatostayyy6754 the variations are minor: bamboo instead of wood (because China was and is ridiculously deforested), silk instead of guts or metal strings, Chinese decorative patterns instead of European decorative patterns.

The flight of the bumble bee is to the violin as fur Elise is to the piano - overplayed and dreaded by the players
Angela Rose I think I know why ppl get impressed by the FOTB and Fur Elise. But for us musicians, FOTB, Canon, and Fur Elise= sacrilegious and awful. The piece itself is so good, to be honest, but it’s super overplayed.

Pachabel Canon in D.
“Do you challenge each other?”
Where I went to school, the jazz and the classical department get along pretty well, actually.
@@ellajeffres4747 yess that's so true.. besides, what's the point of these kinds of battle anyway? lol. no kind of music is better than the other, because each one holds so much culture and history behind it. it's just odd to have bad blood just because we're playing different things..

My school has like 4 bass players 10 cellos 15 violas 25 violin players in one big rehearsal room but chorus orchestra and band has their own room
my school has 2 band rooms 1 orchestra room and 2 choir rooms, one in which is shared with band lmao and we have 4 sound proof practise rooms

I'm a Chinese music performer and Flight of the Bumblebee is actually a graded practice piece for some examination boards. It's really common to see Violin pieces like Zigeunerweisen played on the Pipa, the Erhu, etc.
I really like the room they’re filming in, ngl, it’s super cute
As an asian who watched the movie before, i gotta say that the movie is really good. Those in the chinese instrument department: the girl who played guzheng in this movie learned guzheng since she was 6 and she has already reached grade 10. The 2 other girls who played ruan and pipa are also real musicians too. As for the main actress (the girl who played yangqin), she isn’t a real musician but she went to learned yangqin 3 months before filming the movie :)
They can't even play 15notes per second... They don't even have a 2 million sacrilegious violin/viola
*LiNG LiNG laugh so hard at them*
The last Chinese instrument is probably something like the saxophone.
It's kind of symbolic.
You can't just pick anyone because of their appearance
exactly, if you want to watch real musicians, go watch a performance
@Ki-ana uwu yeah
-Picks up violin-
Anyway, here's Bumblebee.
inaccurate music playing aside, ngl that music battle look hella cool, really liked the one where the students opened a door and a pianist and (forgot the name) were playing
THE FLIGHT(DEATH) OF A BUMBLEBEE RETURNS!
After binge watching a lot of ts videos, I can't enjoy any drama with "music" genre the same anymore 😭😂😂 I can even spot a little whether it's real or fake 🤣 thanks teacher. U guys are awesome
the trumpet player also failed us (I know this because I play the double horn). He played the G (concert F) with first valve instead of open.
Same with the flutes. One of them is actually just moving all her fingers up and down. Don't get me started on the clarinet.
I know!!!! (I play the trumpet 🎺)
Thanks for making me laugh when I’m sad ... i love your guys’ channel❤️
can u react to karate kid with jackie chan violin parts to see if they are accurate?
^^^
YES, THIS!
when you’re a classical pianist and a jazz pianist: *I’m playing both sides, so that I always come out on top*
Me: It’s winter break so I’m not gonna practice
Eddy and Brett: Go PRACTICE
Me: b-but...winter break...!
Eddy and Brett: (at the end of the video) GO PRACTICE!
Me:.......but...
Sophia The Midget no breaks on twoset's channel . NOW GO PRACTISE
Sophia Frantzi lol I messed around with the piano for about an hour and I only practiced violin for 20 mins 😂
@@softia9 how DARE YOU
@@softia9 LMAO I HAVEN'T TOUCHED MY PIANO IN MONTHS-

Chopin wrote in his diary on July 26, 1847:
"I was honoured to meet my fellow countryman, the politician Giuseppe Mazzini, who is in exile here in London.
Lol the battle cry thing was actually exist 😂
@Boba Love thank you for not spreading misinformation
Boba Love THANK YOU!!
Boba Love yes thank you, although it doesn’t say the name for sure is Italian I have no clue where the quote is from and the just said Italian man, but yeah Chopin didn’t write a single opera so thank you for that clarification!
JULY 26 IS MY BDAY :')
