You think you’re going insane because you keep seeking them out?

Loll for real
Don't worry YT adds to this with their algorithms so it's not entirely your own fault.
The last of us part 1 is truly one of the greatest games ever made This game has the best story I've ever played
Definitely, cant believe they somehow topped it with part 2. Im more excited for part 3 than i have been for any other game

I genuinely think that the last of us is a masterpiece of a game. It truly is the peak of Gaming in my opinion
Then gaming Is doomed, good thing you opinion Is whack
Peak of gaming? I hope you're joking.
Well that confirms your insanity.
@@rmv9194its fine if its the peak of gaming to him.
@rmv ignore these clowns, personally i dont think tlou is anywhere near the peak, not even in the same league as games like metal gear or elden ring, but i gotta say it has one of the best stories ever in gaming thats for sure!
If you enjoyed TLOU, you should try Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. Like TLOU, but 10x more story depth, atmosphere, creativity, style, humor, more memorable characters, greater lore, and of course the gameplay, systems, fun, etc are all another level. It expands on TLOU's QTEs and cinematic sequences, by instead putting you in control of those sequences, with more gameplay freedom and variety of approach.
This game is, without a doubt, a master piece. It really changed my perspective on videogames, I will never get tired of coming back to it. Amazing video!
the world doesn't deserve a cure on ellie's sacrifice.
tell that to your infected family.
@@flamingmanure they’d still be infected if you listen to the recordings of the infection within days the victim has severe brain damage by the fungal growth, if you managed to cure a clicker they would be a vegetable person incapable of anything but blinking and drooling. It isn’t realistic anyways. The world had been gone for two decades even if they figured something out there is no way to mass produce anything or distribute it or make those connections. Billions are already dead the world is decayed beyond repair.
The world is already too broken to fix. There is no way the world will going back like before even with ellie's sacrifice

Thats my favorite scene in the entire game! No matter how many times you play it. That acting. That performance. Damn 👏
Troy and Ashley brought their A game
@@GameOverloadMOThe best part is that what made it into the final game was partially unscripted. When she stumbles over her line a bit and shoves Joel, that's all Ashley. She tapped into something raw there.
After playing the game again after watching the HBO show, I will strongly say the game is still the definitive edition to experience of the last of us for one strong reason... the subtle storytelling within gameplay. No other media genre can recreate this no matter how hard they try and that's why the last of us is praised so much it because of this reason. If the Last of Us was originally just a show, people wouldn't think much of it cause it's already been done before like Logan.
Bang on. The game was infinitely more subtle and emotionally resonant. Not to mention the production value felt a lot higher. The show's a great adaptation but like most adaptations it kinda pales in comparison to the rawness of the source material.
i seriously don’t know why ppl overrated the show sm, comparing it to twd and breaking bad is crazy 😂
@@8johh it’s better than The Walking Dead. At least it knows when to end lol
@@SaberRexZealothasn’t ended yet so let’s see how that plays out
@@8johhfr. The show was so ass. I’m never going to understand how Pedro Pascal got nominated for an Emmy. Like his performance wasn’t just not that good, it was actively bad lol. Just speaking all his lines in the most monotone, wooden voice he could muster and having a mildly annoyed look on his face for 90% of the show. He was so miscast it’s not even funny.
Really great retrospective on a truly iconic piece of media and cross-disciplinary art. One thing that wasn’t mentioned in the video that is highly relevant is the fact that the *acting* was top notch.
Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker acted the hell out of the game-it wasn’t like they sat behind a booth and read lines, either. Rather, they got to act out the game much in the same way the Avatar films were performance-captured.
I believe this not only gave the game a unique visual realism that remains largely unmatched; but it added tons of layers and nuance to the performances and the powerful emotions that made the game what it is.
While this also comes from excellent writing, it was Ashley and Troy’s performances that really sold the world on these characters.
Ashley and Troy elevated the already great material. They both deserve so much praise.
Probably my second favourite video game after Red Dead 2
Red dead 2 was awesome and definitely made you feel like a badass, only complaint is the second half of the game dragged a bit much
@@lightningmonky7674 it just made me depressed 🤧
@@lightningmonky7674 I thought the second half was great
@@magiccookies420 it was good don't get me wrong, just took a bit too long to get to the point, and by the end I wasn't as sad as I felt the game wanted me to be as it just overstayed it's welcome a tad
@hxnrytaylor I completely agree RDR2 is the best game ever made imo and then right in at 2 is The Last Of Us part 1 and Detroit become human at 3
when i first played the last of us, i was going through a very dark time in my life. i had problems with my friends, i was in a toxic relationship and i had problems in my family. i played this game when there was no love in my life or anything like that. and experiencing the love between Joel and Ellie helped me a lot. this game is perfect to me, and it will always have a special place in my heart.
That’s awesome man. Crazy how powerful story and characters can be!
Just started it again, it's just art.
I don't think Joel necessarily recovered too quickly... Ellie had already been nursing him for months (Fall until thick snow). The shot of penicillin might have just been to knock out the final fever and infection.
Also, how the in the world is "these guys knocked me unconscious mid-resuscitation, separated us, are rushing a lethal surgery before letting Ellie even wake up, and are now marching me out of the building without supplies or weapons, so I'm going to save her" him being bad?
Joel being a bad person isn't some kind of take I've conjured. This is well established even by the people who made the game.
@@GameOverloadMOcreators dont get to choose how we interpret their art work.
They present us Joel doing some actions and choices in a very extreme context (a divided world in survival mode). We judge him according to what they show us, the context (helping a stranger can get you killed) and our own morality system.
If they wanted him to be unambiguosly bad, then they did a bad job writting him. At the end, the fact that about half people think Joel was wrong AND half people think he was right is what has given relevance AND timelessness to the story.
When the creator is telling us "no really guys, he was bad and if he had not saved Ellie the world would be saved, ha ha ha, we made you play as the bad guy" after showing us a complex world where everyone Is killing each other, untrust each other and nothing Is certain; he is just shooting himself in the foot, denying the complexity of the world he created.
Like, are you telling me It was guaranteed that by killing Ellie; a group that was obliterated by ONE GUY would actually develop the vaccine, produce It massively, give It away to everyone including their enemies without getting attacked first and then restore the world to an state of peace and cooperation???? Arent all groups full of hatred and thirst for revenge (you know, THE CENTRAL THEME OF THE SEQUEL)??? Would having a vaccine change that??? Also, humans surviving 20 years could make me think they can actually survival the fungus eventually, so there Is no certainty of world's Doom neither. I mean, one of the main themes Is "humans are the real monsters" displacing the infected to a second plane.
@@rmv9194yep... and so many people miss the fact that Part 2 constantly hammers home the fact that Joel was good
I am often hyper obsessed with analyzing all little details and alternative explanations. After finishing this game, I spent dozens of hours thinking about it and watching videos like this on it. Joel was right 100%. Unfortunately, if you think too closely you will discover that the answer to the "dilemma" was more clear cut than you'd see at surface value (and I don't mean it was clear the vaccine should be pursued, quite the opposite). I try not to let it ruin the rest of the game and story but the dilemma is truly overemphasized. There was little to no reason to kill Ellie and the fireflies have only themselves to blame. Like why didn't they ask for Ellie's opinion? And why did the fireflies be so unnecessary secretive when they could've been more upfront or at least tried the alternatives? And what about the practical/logistical ways in which a cure could even be distributed? Also, it's not smart to kill (one of) your only sources of a cure. If it doesn't work would you even be able to try again? So the vaccine wasn't even guaranteed and the fireflies were incompetent beyond belief. Joel was right.
This is so spot on. Especially since they're consider "terrorists" by FEDRA aka the current Federal government...
Not to mention, the fireflies have demonstrated time and time again how grossly incompetent they are. various lore items in part one point towards the fact that they would almost certainly been unsuccessful even if the operation had gone through. (although this was retconned in part two)
While I agree it's pretty obvious how incompetent the fireflies are, I don't think it takes anything away from the dilemma the game was posing. Yes, the fireflies probably didn't have to kill Ellie, but putting one self inside this world, they only had one competent doctor as far as we know, and the only procedure he knew would result in Ellie's death, which, in the doctor's eyes, is one life for the millions they could save with a possible cure. Joel wasn't rationalizing whether these people could or couldn't make a cure successfully, he was only thinking that he can't lose Ellie, and if he has to go through all these people, he won't hesitate. The central question is like the trolley problem, do you kill this one child that's become your adopted daughter or do you kill everyone else at the hospital and possibly doom humanity? Which life has more value? Which one is the right choice? And which one is the human, emotional choice? Of course, once you play the game as Joel, his choice becomes the right one, but objectively the fireflies' choice still had some merit. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Idk, this is why it's such a compelling story, because every character isn't always making the "right" or morally unquestionable choice, they're just trying to survive.
Choice is the single most defining element why Joels decision was justified. You have to be one hell of a psychopath to kill a human being without consent, even in the name of greater good, and feel morally justified. There's just no excuse for that.
@@brodude7194at the same time joel robs ellie of her choice as well.
Another perfect video! Well done! Thank you for starting off my day with another brilliant piece!
The Last of Us is my favourite video game of all time for those reasons. It was also a game that brought me back into playing video games again.
It was also something that bonded my deceased father and I. He was never into video games but he was captivated by the story, the characters and the world. Connection - exactly as you well put it - is one of the most remarkable Naughty Dog has created. It was a game that brought people together to have indepth discussions and a game i recommended people to play. Now more people are playing the game because of the HBO series - again connecting and reconnecting people because of the game's iconic story, characters and world building.
Fantastic video essay! Ive been inspired to do my own video essay on The Last of Us thanks to your incredible work!!
Thanks man, good luck!
Thanks for being a massive inspiration. I have just created my first video about The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. I look forward to watching your video on that game.@@GameOverloadMO
34:43 I was lost in the world at this moment when I played through the game, i was on this view for a solid 10 minutes before continuing, or even realizing i had to continue it myself, I was lost in the dialogue and story as well here
Same here. The music whilst locked on this view is bliss.
i watched the show 2 months ago and finally got around to playing the game this week and i cannot tell you how much i absolutely love both. the show and the game compliment each other perfectly.
Great video! I couldn't agree more with you on how fantastic this game actually is. I would like to add another point though that wasn't mentioned - the music. The music in this game is absolutely perfect. Apart from being beautiful by itself - it perfectly captures the essence and feeling of this story and its world. The loss, degeneration, hopelessness and despair radiates through every note...Gustavo freaking nailed it!
Like childhood euphoria, I’m sure a lot of us wish we could relive The Last Of Us 1 and 2 for the first time again.
ellie didn’t break joel’s rule about telling other people she’s ‘infected’. it was about being immune. david didn’t know she was immune, he just thought she was infected lmao
I would really like to see what Joel and Tommy went through from losing his daughter and before the first game starts
Yeah joel definitely deserved some dlc.
Yes same here.
Sort of like a prequel!
The joel and tommy years!!
this is such an excellent video very high quality looking forward to seeing more :)
Amazing footage editing! Good job!
It’s truly awful to see where they thought this story needed to go, it hurts my soul
Same, to me it ruined everything the first game built towards and made it all pointless. I can't even enjoy the first part as much as I used to now.
I'm glad they went the direction they did. Part 2 topped part 1 for me.

Great analysis. Opened my mind to a few aspects I never considered.
There are a lot of videos analyzing TLoU. Yours is one of the finest. Great work, looking forward to your video about Part II.
This needs more views - fast. Great content man ❤️
To save the world Joel had to give up ellie, The problem is that ellie *IS* his world at this time.without her he feels useless. So honestly it makes sense that joel saves *HIS* world
Even with Ellie and them figuring out a cure there is no way to mass produce it or distribute it or educate. The world has been gone for a long time and is broken down and decayed with millions dead. It may help portions of people but not save the world and the immune people can still get ripped apart
One of the few games that I remember exactly where I was when I first started the game and got through the beginning. I knew right away it was going to be my favorite game ever
3 videos and all of them are quality. Great stuff man
I literally finished my 1st replay of part 1 since watching the show last night. Today, I start my 1st playthrough of pt 2 since finishing it on release 4 years ago. Solid vid, bro. Earned a sub
Hey bro Love your deep dives into games. Its a different style of deep dive then I do on my videos and its calming and refreshing. You got my SUB with this video. Great work man!
joel DIDNT wake up just in time to save ellie during winter. he was late.
Someone didn’t play the bonus story
One of my first games on the ps3 and favourite games ever. Gaming back then was so ahead of its time. I am glad Part 2 did so good despite the criticism. It was predictable that part 2 wouldn't be as good as part 1 since everything is getting shittier in the world right now but it still did pretty good for today's circumstances.
Thank you so much for this video ❤️ it got me to subscribe to your channel! You did a beautiful job.
I’d like to share with you that the first time I’d played this masterpiece I didn’t have any kids. Years later, here I am with my baby boy Chris, who is 4 now and trust me when I say: You play this game again as a father one day and you cannot begin to imagine how intensely it will hit you then 🥹🥹🥹 … I had moments where I’d start crying just for hugging my son or seeing him laugh!
This is by far the most powerful story ever told in gaming history.
Subbed, so that I don't miss part 2 long form breakdown.
I dunno, the guys chasing down "tourists" in an armored car seemed pretty evil
Love this game. The story and gameplay are phenomenal.
I still can't finish part 2 though 😅
Holy shit I just saw that you have less than 4k subscribers.. After this video I can say that u my man deserve so much more, and that u got a subscriber out of me. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your thoughts on The last of us 2 🙂
One of my absolute favorite series overall. Such an inspiration and it can’t be overstated how much it affected storytelling in video games.
That’s funny, i decided to replay with the same idea in mind and loved it more.
Just finished another grounded run, it's still simply amazing.
Tess was an underrated character almost cried when she died as Joel and tess where friends
dope vid bro
The cat anecdote is fantastic!
That scene in the spores with the trapped man in the broken mask is just a giant "oh shit" moment. Like you don't want to waste the bullet, but can you let him suffer and turn?
It's not an exact parallel, but it does somewhat foreshadow Joel's major choice at the end. And more importantly, since both options are playable, it can be quite telling about the player themselves.
I remember seeing the trailer for the game way back when. I foolishly didn’t buy it. Then I got my ps4 and bought the remaster. Immediately became the favorite story driven game I’ve ever played.
I am mainly an XBOX player but own a PS5 as well. TLOU 1 & 2 are the best games I have ever played.
33:07 first time in a long time that joel accpets his reality, my favorite part of the game
I’ve never loved and appreciated a game more than The Last of Us. I’ve loved it since it first came out when I was in middle school and I don’t think anything could replace it in my mind.
When Joel and Ellie get back on the horse after their “I’m not Sarah…” discussion, and Joel first reveals that, essentially, he’s not abandoning Ellie, and her face subtly lights up with a joy she can’t contain…. that.
I will say no matter how many times I play the story. The end credit drop is still so stunning and chilling because you don't expect it at all and truly stuck with me.
For 20 Euros on EGS, a game of this caliber, it is a steal
THIS is why its my favorite game of all time. Nothing comes close to be honest.
These games blew me away, only story from gaming that has stuck with me deeply, thinking about it long after completion. I long for more stories from this world
This is the only video game that has made me cry, and stand up and literally applaud at the end. Absolutely one of the greatest video games of all time.
Can't wait for Part II!!
can you do part 2 after this? really likes your review of this game!
Thanks! Currently finishing up my replay of Part 2 at the moment. Video should be out by the end of the month.
be honest lol@@GameOverloadMO
Troy and Ashley put on such an amazing performance.
This is the first and only game, (and Part 2), that transcends the medium of games. Truly a work of art on all levels.
Can you imagine if Instead of what we got for Part 2 we instead get to play a vengeful Joel as he hunts down every firefly for having killed Ellie in pursuit of a cure that failed and thus losing a daughter all over again? Maybe my imagination is too out there but i need to seen that multiverse just once.
Well done, sir!
The Last of Us Part 1 is the greatest video game of all time!!🎮💯
i love this franchise so much
The story of this game is single handedly one of not the best story ever, written, I still tear up when Sarah dies.😢
I beat this game 8 times (which is a lot for me). I have the platinum trophy. I then bought it on PC and I am playing through it for the 9th time. I have played this game across 3 different platforms at this point and I just don't get tired of it.
What a great video on what so many of us think is the greatest game ever!! To this day I'm yet to play another game that is as perfect as this is. The game play might be the only negative, but the world, the story and the characters = perfect. It's just my all time favourite.
Joel looks at his watch too in the show.
The baby girl moment has me fucking sobbing.
Yeah I think of alot of linear Half - Life like games where it's just an action adventure with linear story based narratives but open ended gameplay.
The Last of Us P1 was truely the peak of its kind.
There are probably some other story based action games that mix cinematic elements with gameplay to get memories out of me, but I also look back at this game inparticular as one that felt as though it came the closest
Little Nightmare 2 was probably the closest I've ever felt where just like in TLOU, I was like, man what do I do with my life now.
I played it for a few hours when I was younger and found it boring, came back to it today after buying the ps5 version and I just beat it tonight, had me in tears, looking forward to part 2 (I already played it) but it’ll be a different experience now understanding the world
David creeped me the hell out
Something that I don't see mentioned often is the fact that both Joel and the Fireflies took away Ellie's choice in her contribution to the possible cure. The fireflies decided for her that she would sacrifice for a cure that still hadn't even decided if they could make and Joel decided she wouldn't. While she said later that she would've done whatever she had to for the cure, that's an easy statement when your death isn't hanging on the choice. Both Joel and Marlene made choices for Ellie while she was unconscious that took away her autonomy and her input on her own life and he level of contribution to what was still not a sure thing. The layers of moral ambiguity are what makes this game so great.
But Joel didn't take her choice away. The only choice he had was walk away or save her.
The only mistake Joel made was not being honest with her.
@gravybate2283 Joel took away her choice when he shot Marlene and then lied to her. He eliminated any chance she had to make the choice after that. Killing Marlene was the point of no return for Joel removing her say in the matter.
@brkfst4dnr killing the doctor was the point of no return since he was the only one capable of doing it.
@gravybate2283 fair. But the choice wasn't ellies and Joel was complicit in removing it just as much as the fireflies in my eyes
@brkfst4dnr none of the 3 were capable of being unbiased. Ellie had survivors guilt and trauma on top of it. Marlene never cared what Ellie wanted, and Joel would maybe be okay with Ellie's death if he got to talk to her. Maybe.
This is a good video, but not a single essayist of this game I've seen can resist just playing the cabin scene 8:25 in its entirety without any commentary.
Great review. I totally agree with the comparison between the game and series. I did like the series but though it felt really undercooked compared to the game. Maybe it was just a testiment to how good of a medium gaming is for story telling.
While I am enjoying the show, I'm always telling newbies to this beautiful story to experience the game before watching the show. The game is what made the show possible. I'd give anything to go back and play the games for the first time again. 🖤
I adore this game, and the Left Behind DLC is beautiful and bittersweet. Both games have us playing in a VERY morally grey area, but not without some hope. The ultimate message is that we have to keep fighting for something. Joel is so complex, loving one minute and broken after Sarah’s death. Ellie acts obviously as that counter to him. I feel like he is afraid to get too close to another because he fears that he will lose them again. In fact, it’s clear that our main characters are both most afraid of winding up alone. So much more could be said about Joel’s decision at the end, but you understand WHY he did it. Furthermore, Marlene and the Fireflies actually seem not only antagonistic but incompetent. Ellie is so endearing, and has suffered a lot. I am not a fan of those tedious puzzles that break up the gameplay, and there are a few conveniences to be sure. But it’s near-perfect, and why it’s timeless despite its flaws!
dont sleep on the online i am still playing after all these years
Best game of my life.
20:32 I’d further make the argument that Joel outright rejects the idea of “sacrificing the few to save the many” in part due to his delivery of that explanation to Ellie as well as his lived experience.
That mindset is what threatened his life at the beginning of the game and cost Sarah hers. That mindset is something he bought into by being a hunter and eventually regretted. That mindset is what David and other hunter clans continue to thrive on at his expense. That mindset is ultimately what risks Ellie’s life.
I don’t think Joel ever believed in the idea of “sacrifice the few to save the many” because, for him, there doesn’t seem to be much of a point. I further think this buys into his rejection of hope because any cause for hope (like the fireflies, which took his brother from him and continue to threaten the new status quo in which Joel is comfortable) has felt unrealistic in a world where humanity no long cares for itself. To “arbitrarily” choose a sacrifice (in Joel’s mind) for the sake of the world doesn’t work for Joel because he will never believe again that it would ever be worth it. It simply would never last.
beautifully said

I cant believe what they did to this franchise with retcon 2.
underrated.
Imagine if instead of killing Joel they killed Ellie, and Joel while on a quest for revenge, would have had to deal with his grief and the fact that he took that choice from Ellie for no reason. Marline was right. What the point of saving her then when something else was going to kill her not long after.
Would've been doper
But they would still spare the main antagonist but not the thousands of other strangers you kill during gameplay
I don't have a Playstation. I just watched the cutscenes 😂🤷🏾♂️
I actually feel sorry for people that "dont get" the last of us games!
People that call it a one and done game, a walking simulator.
It truly is in my opinion the best video game ever made!
If you've got a good PC build, then this game looks immaculate.
Last of us 1 is a all time best story game
You named your cat Ellie. I named my daughter Ellie Jo!
I think one of the biggest issues that no one seems to talk about is that no one, not Joel, not Marlene, not the doctor, no one did the one thing that kind of makes them all really shitty. No one asked Ellie what she wanted to do. We all know Ellie ends up pissed off that Joel decided things for her. But so did the Fireflies. Everyone made decisions for Ellie, as if she's not her own person but just a tool for saving humanity, or just Joel's surrogate daughter. She's really objectified when you think about it.
I’ve seen this issue discussed before. It seems to fall back on the fact that she’s a child and possibly can’t fully comprehend the decision as an adult could, therefore they take the action.
The Last of Us, Spider-Man 1, Red Dead Redemption 2, Detroit Become Human, are the top of my list. Oh and Hades maybe
It's only one of 2 games i ever bought twice. PS3 and PS4. The other game was Borderlands 2.
The first game will always be something special for me. The second game was weird and the hbo series is really bad. They should have just left it as is
