Well this is something I don’t do very often. I’ve spent a lot of time on this channel giving love to older, less appreciated title. Stuff like Resident Evil, Silent Hill or Stalker, but today I’d like to let you guys in on a secret. I absolutely love the Last of Us. The story, the world, the characters, the gameplay. It all just clicked with me in a way that doesn’t happen to me very often. This is a game that genuinely touched me, and the goal today is to try and describe why that is. Plus, the Last of Us Remake recently came out, and I know you guys didn’t think I was going to pass up a chance to compare old 720p footage from a PS3 game to 4k captures from a brand new PS5 release. This one’s gonna be fun!!

28:14 That part was a difficulty spike, no doubts. On my first playthrough of the game i died there countless times. In a way, is a baptism of fire
I traded my Xbox one for a ps4 like five years ago just to play this game and I’ve never regretted it! Such an epic game, I don’t mind the second either. Played back to back, there amazing!
Well worth it
HAHAHHA I LITERALLY DID THE SAMEEE ( also i wanted to play bloodborne)
Yay yayyyyy
I was a 360 guy so I went with an Xbox one and was so disappointed. I went to my friend's house and he had a PS4 and last of us remastered. Needless to say after trying out the game and messing around with the console I immediately went out and got one myself.
Playstation always has amazing titles
The Last of Us 1 is EASILY in my top 5 favorite games of all time.
That first scene with his daughter was so damn sad. I saw that scene again recently, but now as a father of 2 and it genuinely hit me so much harder in a way where I needed to give myself a minute to compose myself from losing it in tears. The acting is THAT GOOD and believable.
Your script writing for your shows are always so well done. Great video.
Yo thanks dawg!!
@@AvalancheReviews in regards to the remake pricing, my point of comparison is crash Trilogy and spyro trilogy, which had insane value.
Id also say 10 years isn't anything today in gaming years. 1990 to 2000 was like going from horse and buggy to a corvette. 2010 to 2020 is like going from a dodge charger... To a slightly faster dodge charger.
@@AvalancheReviews Hey look Avalanche you won a giveaway from yourself! J/k
@@AvalancheReviews Hey someone is impersonating you, They are wanting me to send them money on telegram for winning something on your channel. I commented on this video they replied.
Jared! I still may end up teaching out in Japan someday thanks to your advice last year!
More importantly, this was an excellent video man...the quality of your coverage continually improves. I will try to attend more live streams down the line and definitely will be picking the remaster up after viewing this 👍
Fuck yeah!!!! Hey, if you ever end up in the Tokyo area, shoot me a DM on twitter. I'm sure I'll have plenty of advice on living here by then.
Finding a teaching job here will be easy, but from what I understand, it's fairly competitive due to how many foreigners want to come here to teach English.
Great write up mate. It's always a good time revisiting these kind of games.
Will also say that you should totally try the multiplayer. It's still active, and it's quite a unique feeling once you get to grips with the pacing and strategies.
Was never too hot on this game but I thoroughly enjoyed the video my man. Awesome to see how much it means to ya!
Awesome job with the vid! Great points and I can't wait to go back and give this another run through💪🔥🙌
I really loved the digital foundry shout out. When I watch your videos, I feel like it's a great companion piece to digital foundry, but I don't mean that in a bad way. It's like if digital foundry had a personality.
Well that's a huge compliment in my book! Thanks so much!!
Seriously, that ceespit of Xbox bias and toxic, insecure fanboy morons..?!
Great video, really glad to see one of my fav youtubers cover one of my fav games!
Well thank you! Glad ya liked it.
I think with the face animations they were able to more accurately represent what the actors and actresses did on the stage according to Neil Druckman
They look so damn good now. I really liked how the faces animated in the original, but after seeing these new animations, I just can't go back.
Great job man! Loved this one. I know it is a long shot but one day I would love this same detailed review on Part II. I recently played the remake and went straight to a replay of part II and have found new appreciation for it.
The bottle/brick and hit combo is how I beat Grounded mode, especially in the Ellie sections
Great video man, this definitely deserves more views
One of the best video gaming content creators out there imo. Keep up the amazing work, Jared!
Thanks so much!!
Heya, great video! Just three things. A remaster also involves making entirely new assets, be it 3D models, animations and textures. It qualifies as a remaster as long as the original code of the game is largely the same, like for example Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, despite the marketing saying they're remakes. They confirmed in multiple interviews they did not change the original code at all and their engine is running the original games underneath their new upgraded visuals.
Second, the weird reflection trick in the remake you mentioned is because reflections here have two layers, and this applies to every reflection. They are screen space reflections, but once that screen space they need to show the reflection is out the camera's view, it reveals the cube map reflection underneath, which is the same exact technique used in those wonky reflections of the original and remastered.
And third, gameplay changes go a bit farther than what you mentioned, though they're more noticeable on harder difficulties. Encounters end up playing in completely different ways from the original, specially against human enemies who know flank and coordinate like in Part II
Great to see you posting again, man!
That ending lol! Definitely the best vid I've ever seen, also better than any movie I've ever seen! It opened a third eye in my mind and now I see EVERYTHING!
But seriously, it was a great video. You break down the technical stuff in a laymen way that my slow brain can actually process, but you also make it a fun watch so it doesn't come off like a Digital Foundry vid. Nothing against them either, they are fucking fantastic, but I guess I'm just trying to say I appreciate that your vids have your own voice if I'm saying that correctly. Thanks for the effort you put into these, it's always exciting to see an upload from your channel!
I just finished playing the remake and part 2 on my PS5. What an awesome game series. Particularly, I like how we finally have gyro aim in both part one and part two. It's a literal game changer.
I played this game when I first got my PS4, I'd never heard of the game and was absolutely blown away. One of the best games I've ever played
Yay I just asked about this Avalanche thank you ❤️
No! Thank you!
I remember when this game launched and I beat it. I kept thinking about that ending for like 2 weeks straight. Very few videogames have done that for me.
Awesome stuff as always dude 👏
Bravo, man! I personally love the Part I, and you hit the nail on the head on what is the definition of a "remake," since many of these yoyos don't know what it means.
The weird reflections you're talking about are called projected cube-maps. It's a fairly old technique at this point, but functionally they have a virtual camera facing in six different directions to approximate a reflection. They definitely break down if they are used in a careless way, but they can be pretty convincing in certain scenarios. Funnily enough, I'm pretty sure the PS5 Remake actually uses an evolution of the technique called box projected cube-maps. The box technique allows for slightly more perspective correct reflections than the classic version.
Ahhhh! Thanks for illuminating that for me! As I do this longer and longer, i develop more of a vocabulary for the things I'm trying to describe thanks to comments like this.
27:40 thank god I’m not the only one. Just finished this game for the first time and that segment was the source of so many deaths for me. Just constant trial and error, but it was so satisfying to overcome
No joke, it's actually a relief seeing so many other people struggle there.
Thanks for the upload
Thanks for the comment!
Quality content as always. Love from the UK brother 👊
Thanks a lot man!!
My main issues with the remake are that I don't like the new face graphics and, well, isn’t a remake supposed to change the story in some way? That's just what I've grown used to.
Remakes can alter things like story, but they don't have to. In fact, I'd say a good remake will preserve as much of the original experience as possible.
@@AvalancheReviews Oh, okay. I guess I'm used to the RE remakes where some new storyline is developed into it.
@@ginagidaro
They were actually worthy of buying.
First game I got when I got a PS4 in 2014 loved every second
dude, you are a legend. you will never know how much stabilty youve given me in some troubling times. i mean in ways of unfocsing my mind from circling thoughts and taking a break, thinking about fluff you have made a vid about. Mainly the DeadSpace Vid. but the other ones to, this one will carry me into sleep, so thanks again.
im out
Cool effect on the channel logo there at the start.
Pretty cool, right?! Looking back, I should have put a little green color overlay on it so that it looked more like the spores in the game.
@@AvalancheReviews Still time to delete, add the effect, re-export, upload again, and wait for it to process up to 4K, am I right?
Just reading that stresses me out.
This is one of my all time favourite games as well as most of the Resi series. So I love your retrospective and I loved the deep dive of this. We 100% need a part 2 retrospective/deep dive dude. Keep up the good work Jared.
13:35 I beg to differ, sir. Nothing, NOTHING will dethrone the Jill Sandwich. NO-THING
Just today I wondered when you would release your next video :) thanks Jared
I was out with Covid for like 2 and a half weeks and then a hard drive failed on me. This project took like 2 months all together, when you count all the set backs. Knock on wood though, things should be smooth sailing from here out.
I always struggled in that first stealth section too.
Thanks dude, amazing video as always, would definitely be interested in seeing you do a Last Of Us 2 video.
Very happy to see you liked it! I'll definitely get around to making a video on part 2.
great video jared!
It's amazing how they never made a second
It was a solid game.
No need to milk it.
Just started watching..went to TGS on Friday for 4 hours, didnt see you but it was great! On to the video!

Another amazing and awesome video, to fall asleep to. You're the best! Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos.
A sidenote - still hoping that TLOU2 will get a PC port.
I think there's a good chance of seeing that happen. Now that Part 1 is getting a PC port, I'd say it's likely.
You covered everything I would say with regards to the Remake. Even with the RE Remakes comparison. The price is my turn off, but I have the remaster and can wait for a price drop or sale. Great video review.
Yeah, I get that. 70$ is a lot of money to put down on a game that you've potentially already beaten. When you do end up getting it, you'll be in for a good time.
You know it's a good day when your favourite video game reviewer is reviewing your favourite video game
Hell yeah!

The video I didn't know I needed! Love it man, great job!
We need TLOU pt. 2!!
Dude, thanks so much for the love!!
felt the same about that encounter at 28:00
TLOU Remaster was the first game I played on my PS5 when I bought it last year. It’s a masterpiece, absolutely no doubt.
52:10 the PS4 Pro is rendering at 1800p internally, not 1080p which is why performance is better on the standard PS4
My favorite Resident Evil expert covering my favorite multi-player game for the last 9 years??? Let's go!
Did no one notice the title says/said "Reamke"?
As far as I'm concerned the last of us part one was never the problem.
The PS4 Pro had supersampling, it would render the image in higher resolution and downsample to 1080p if you didn't have a 4k TV. I always turned that off because it added noticable lag to games. The most noticable for me was Horizon Zero Dawn, even though it ran at 30FPS you could still notice the input lag big time. Once I bought a 4K TV I noticed the lag from SS was gone and I wasn't trippin'
Can't wait for the second game's review
Your opinions on it and all
Fantastic video! You've convinced me to pick up the PS5 remake. I was on the fence since it's release, but will take the plunge. Also, you should definitely do a Last of Us Part II video. Rock on.
The online multiplayer on ps4 is still very active and alive today with a great dedicated community.
We're in there
All up in there
Cried the first three times I ever played TLU thanks to that masterclass in emotional mo cap story design during the Sarah scene. In fact, pretty much every cinematic in the game. And, they managed to retain some of what made TLU of special in two. Even if it is all be it, slightly more difficult to see.
You've definitely convinced me to get the remake when it's cheaper. I'm not interested enough in replaying TLOU 1 to buy it full price, but it seems like it'll be a solid buy at a lower price point.
This is such a great video! 💙
Well thanks man!
@@AvalancheReviewsNo problem man, keep up the great work! 🐼👍🏼
This is exactly the type of video I needed for this game and it's soooo welcomed!! Love your content and can't wait for the inevitable Part II video... 👀
Also, my BF and I would like to formally request a visit to the Condemned series to get your hottakes on it!!
Hell yeah!! I don't think it'll be too long a wait for a Condemned video. I've been wanting to cover both of them for a while now.
@@AvalancheReviews That's awesome! I truly can't wait for them to come out. I truly love your deep dives into games and it certainly helps we have similar tastes and opinions in media! 😅
My understanding is that Runners can see your flashlight. I watched the ChristopherOdd play though of the Remake and it looked like he was struggling with that same earlier part of the game.
I just kept thinking “Why isn’t he shutting off his flashlight? That’s why the Runners keeping spotting you!”
But he was also opening his bag and crouch walking around the Clickers, so maybe that was it?
Nah, runners can't see the flashlight. There's a piece of dialogue at the start letting you know that. Plus, they don't see it in any other stealth scenario. I think it just has to do with the runners being in such close proximity and the lack of weapons you have on you at the start of the game. If you just had a shotgun, the whole room could be cleared in 30 seconds.
If I recall correctly the improvements to the combat in Part 1 were them taking a lot of the combat improvements from Part 2 and adding them to Part 1.
That very well may be the case as far as aiming and stuff goes.
A video on Part II? Yes, please!
oh HELL yeah. this is the one i've been waiting for. are you planning to cover Part 2 and the HBO series when it's out? there are a couple comics too, i think.
could make for a pretty solid retrospective!
If that's what people want to see. Feels like I'd be poking a bear by even talking about the second game, but that hasn't stopped me before.

This game broke me man. I was unable to get it out of my head for like a week after the credits rolled. Now waiting for the remake to arrive on PC and do a fresh run.
Not gonna lie, I'll have that PC ver day 1.
Awesome breakdown of a damn near perfect game
Thanks!
saying this game was a phenomanon back then would be a massive understatement, especially with how modern military FPS was still dominating at the time
It was definitely a big departure from what most games were doing at the time. Not a lot of games were relying on single player, story driven experiences as well.
I think it shows in the story department, who was writing at naughty dog looking at part 1&2
I know part 2 was game of the years for many but it kind seemed clumsy written to me in compassion to 1. Considering that two of the old writers gad left at that point, it makes sense
*one of the writers actually
What do you mean? There was only 1 writer on the first game, Druckmann, and then 2 writers on the 2nd, him & Halley Gross. Maybe you meant director? Because Bruce Straley was a director with Druckmann on the first and replaced with 2 other people in the sequel, but directors aren’t writers. They can be, but they would be credited for it & Bruce never was

Just ordered a PS5 digital version. Back in the day I had a 4 and a Pro, but I decided to get a Series X when current gen launched because they were so much easier to get, but with Silent Hill 2 Remake and missing being able to play this, I figured the time was now
You should definitely do a video on the Last of Us Part 2
i watched someone play this game on YT and the beat it on every difficulty on a ps3 i ended up buying with my best friend and then when i got my ps4 i have beaten the game again on every difficulty and over all beaten the game 9 time on the ps4 and plan to get the last of us on my PC and future PS5
As someone who hasn't played TLOU (don't have a PS) I can say this is the best TLOU review out there. It's entertaining and very informative to the point that now I wish we could get a proper PC version and try it myself. I've heard only negative arguments about the remake and you taking the time to address those controversies really helped me understand better what it's all about.
I'm genuinely stoked to hear that! Very happy to liked the video. I hear a PC port is indeed in the works and could come as early as next year. So you may get to play it yet.
@@AvalancheReviews If they indeed release it on PC, i'll have to return here after i finish it myself.
All your reviews are genuine and informative. I found some really good games thanks to you, even tho was not a huge fan of survival horror games. Keep up the good work!
"If you want to skip ahead--"
Me: Don't be silly Jared! I would never skip into your video - I watch the whole thing EVERY time!
Very much appreciate that!
@@AvalancheReviews Also, to answer your Q at the end of the video? YES, cover Pt. II.
I definitely feel covering a whole series is one of the things I love most about your channel, because you usually don't leave out a single title, and sometimes, even the most obscure media for a given series!
So I'd definitely love to see your take on Pt. II.
On that note, - one thing you'll notice: you asked a few questions throughout the video, that you were certain some features had been improved for the remake. Not only does the Naughty Dog Instagram Account confirm this theory, but also, playing Pt. II, you'll notice many of these improvements in gameplay especially were first seen in some form in that game.
The facial animation this time around was almost definitely mocapped too, since Pt. II utilised newer technology that ND didn't have at the time of the first game, though, I also speculate that they still went in afterwards to meticulously comb through each scene and add keyframes where needed to clean up any wonky transfers, given that the actors of course don't 1:1 match their on-screen characters facially.
By the looks of things? Part I improves on a lot of the jankier facial movements, which were few and far between in Part II, but noticeable enough that memes could be made of them VERY quickly after release.
Enemy AI and "buddy" (companion) AI, was also MASSIVELY overhauled in the remake, to once again, iterate on new systems made originally for Part II.
Tl;DR: I think you'll be interested to see the progenitor for a lot of the new remake features you praised and how they stack up against the Part II.
In fact, if you DO cover Part II, I'd personally love for that exact discussion to be a talking point in the video, and how (if they did at all,) ND got better with their new tech in your opinion. Especially since you've got all this footage from the Remake - it'd be stellar to see them side-by-side.
Anyway, enough of my rambling! Great video as always, and I'm excited to see the next one!
love seeing the new releases footage/gameplay, its crazy because although the original release looked good, the game now looks LIFELIKE
It really does. It's pretty insane. Seeing it run above 60fps is really something else.
An actual favourite masterpiece that left a mark inside of me
Playing the Remake on Ps5 and I feel it's definitely worth the experience
I LAUGHED so hard at the caked up Clickers commentary... And agree 😂
I don't have a playstation so I tried playing this on RPCS3 but it only runs at like 15 fps
55:43 Great point and something that is strangely overlooked. People develop this one-sided relationship with developers where they'll assume everything is done for the good of the consumer. Nah bruh, EVERYTHING these major game companies do is in some way financially incentived. Capcom's decision to step back from Resident Evil after 6 and reconfigure the formula was a profit motivated decision. It ended up being great for the consumer too, and generated a lot of customer goodwill, which is awesome - but money is still at the forefront.
I think TLOU is in sort a weird place where they DID put a lot of effort into the remaster, and objectively speaking produced something worthy of a full price tag - but on the other end, NOBODY was asking for this because the original games still look and play tremendously well. It was a monumental amount of work for something that not a lot of people were particularly asking for, and I think that's where a lot of the negative sentiment comes from. The win-win is that you can simply not buy it... that said, I'm curious about the PS5 version sales. ND is kind of a bulletproof company at this point.
*Also, the Pokemon argument is the perfect example. Few franchises get a free pass to charge exorbitant prices for low-effort products like those games do. But that's just my opinion 😎
Honestly, I doubt this will sell too well on PS5. People are still having issues buying this damn thing. I think that explains why they're releasing a PC port of this remake as early as next year. I assume sales will be insane on steam. People love a good 4k benchmark kind of game on PC. Hell, I'll buy it again just to see it run at 4k 144hrtz.
Dammit jared, Guess I know what I'm doing for the next hour and a half
Awesome video as always, man! I'll always hold the original game pretty close for what it achieved and the time in my life I played it.
I still hold a lot of the same opinions on the remake as I did before but you present good arguments. For me, my biggest reason for not getting it (besides not having a PS5 anyway) is the price. I also just wonder if this something that most people wanted. Just from a business perspective, I would imagine people would rather have a whole new title as opposed to a remake of TLOU. That's hard to say though. Numbers will tell.
I definitely came out of this video much more positive on Part 1 as an idea than I was before it. Thanks for making good points and helping me pull my head out of my ass a little bit haha I'll definitely pick this up in the future and see how much things have changed
Also, just wanted to add that I'm curious what your thoughts are on Part 2. I'd love to see a video on it. I haven't played it myself yet since the backlog is huge but it would be cool to hear your thoughts
Do Part 2!
Another improvement in the Remake is that windows in cars can now be broken out. In the original, any cars with windows could NOT be damaged. Now in the Remake, if a car still has glass windows, then they can be shot out. I haven't tested how extensive it is, but its there. It always annoys me when games don't allow the player to break glass, whether it be windows, tv's or car windows.
Great video, Jared. This game left me in a state of depression for days after completing it. I couldn't touch it again for about a week because I just needed to let it all sink in. Over the years I've replayed it several times and it never fails to make me appreciate life and its complexities a little more. I'm sure many of us would love your take on TLOU2 - a much more controversial game but, for my money, even better for it.
Part 2 is such a bizzare, confusing, messy and yet beautiful experience, never has a piece of media stuck with me for so many varying reasons both good and bad for so long after it’s release.
I respect the vision and ambition, but I just don’t think it’s as good as it could’ve been.
Part 2 feels like a rough draft of a much better story. Really hope that directors cut exists.
The game that made me cry the most award.
I like seeing so many other people shedding tears over this game. Makes me feel a little better over crying at some pixels on a tv screen. HA!
You better do the second one now boy!
11:42 JILL
Me yelling at your videos when it comes to graphics comparisons: "I don’t see it! I can’t! My eyes are dumb! Ááárgh!"
I'm not 100% sure if I agree on the remake vs remaster dichotomy presented, but its hard to argue as the line blurs when you bring up games like Destroy All Humans.
This is the game that i made the transition to consoles for, the most important reason i bought a ps4 over xbox 1, and i have zero regrets because it opened a whole new aspect of gaming for me, and even if it were not god of war or horizon that proceeded it, i would still make the same choice going back.
Go for the sequel! (and the left behind DLC if you feel like it)
oh and you're right about that part that you found extra difficult, I did too.
Oh good! It wasn't just me.
I really wanna play this remake. I wanna wait for a sale but I am really excited to get my hands on it. Now I really wanna know your thoughts on Part II, LOL.
I will play the remake at some point as I enjoyed this game since PS3. IMO if the price tag was around 40 bucks that would've held back the backlash.
The 1800p option on ps4pro ran closer to 60fps like the standard ps4 after 1-2 patches.
And for me the most unforgivable thing about the ps5 remake is the online being cut out from this version.
This is my second favorite game after FFVII I think. It's at least up there. I don't have the PS5 though, so I probably won't be playing the remake any time soon.
It's definitely one of my absolute favorites. I heard the PC port is coming as soon as next year!
