  • The Last of Us, one of gaming's most recognizable franchises, is now ten years old. It's difficult to imagine a world where it didn't exist, given how much of an impact it has had on the industry, but that's the purpose of the video: looking back at The Last of Us and seeing what made it so special and why it's had the impact it has had that allowed it to become one of the top Playstation franchises in just short amount of time. The video is going to go over everything from the game's history, to it's mechanics, it's story and characters, it's ports and re-releases and the endless moral discussions that have taken place surrounding it's finale!

I went through the same aswell, growing up i had xbox, nintendo, and the ps2 at my grandmas house, i never had a ps3 or ps4, but my favorite games to watch and story wise were always uncharted and the last of us. ive watched through jacksepticeyes playthrough of all of the games many many many many times, played tid bits of the games at friends houses. But never owned them.
Then they brought the game to pc last year, i became a pc gamer and was playing games compettively and hadnt played a story game in a while, i bought it day one and played through it in one sitting, i loved every second and instantly went back and played new game+. In 2 days im buying a playstation and the last of us 2 with my first ever paycheck, time flies man @@the_bottomfragger

The Last of Us literally altered my life trajectory. After I played it I decided I wanted to make games as a career. Turns out coding was not my forte and I didnt like the school I chose so I transferred colleges and went into mechanical engineering. Even though I didnt end up where I thought I would, I know my life would be completely different had I never played this game. I wouldve gone to some other school, never transferred, and never met the people I had

Watching this review got me emotional all over again for this game. I'm so glad I tried this game out, because it was unforgettable experience. I already appreciated your original review, but here you just described every story beat to absolute perfection. Since you often change titles on your videos and things like that, as you alluded to earlier in the video, I just want to personally assure you that I think this is one of the videos on your channel that will age very well for years to come and is the definitive review of The Last of Us.

The Last of Us outbreak began in 2013.
    Ergo,
There is a chance, however slim, that Joel *does* know what Loss is, and spoke with especial conviction, in that scene...

I’d never played The last of Us, never was interested until last year. After I got a PS5 my best friend at that time who was so incredibly close to me asked if I wanted to watch her share play Part II. It was an incredibly stressful time in my life, and I had no idea what I was getting into but I said yes. Halfway through I stared playing the remastered version and got super into that as well, and then I ended up in a situation that was incredibly stressful and couldn’t be online for a couple weeks. She was by my side during it and I eventually was able to finish the play through of Part II with her.We went through that game together and we were both super emotional with each other at the end. Both games are super special to me for that reason and I’m eager to see your opinion on Part II. Part II was my introduction to the series and I was oblivious to the controversies of it, so I’m naturally more partial to it compared to other fans.

I remember getting my PS3 in 2013 for Sly 4, and not much else. For some reason, this local portuguese UA-camr decided to make a playthrough of TLOU, who's first EP I watched religiously to my last tear shed.
The day after, I went to a Game (old times' CEX) and bought the game for half it's price, right after it's release. I had to BEG my parents for it, since I was only 11. That summer, I played the game at least 10 times. It was an absolute favourite, dethroning Metal Gear Solid 2 with ease.
Maybe I was going through a rough patch, and just resonated with the characters more than I care to admit. I grew up seeing Joel and Ellie going from generation to generation, waiting for Part 2 like I've never waited for any other game. I think this love for The Last of Us is something really personal and dear to me. These two characters have scarred me so deep into my heart, that they'll always be in my thoughts. It wasn't just a game, it was an escape from reality, into another reality.
It might not be the greatest game of all time. It's flawed, like every other game is but, to me, it'll always be my one and only. My heart will always skip a bit with that final "Okay".

  • @SpeedDemon55

The Last of Us changed my life forever. It was the first game I played where I cared so much about the characters. The gameplay was fun but I always came back to see what happens in Joel and Ellie’s story. Joel is my favourite character ever. I empathise so much with him. He lost his daughter and felt guilty about it shutting the world of for twenty years but when he meets Ellie he begins to see her as his daughter and is able to heal from Sarah’s death. Ultimately Joel is willing to sacrifice a cure for the virus to save her because he wants her to live and be happy and he knows that he can’t have the death of another daughter on his conscience. Over the game Joel and Ellie are tested but they come out alive and Joel comes out with a newfound perspective and optimism. He no longer hides away grieving but instead moves on and tries to be happy for the time he has left. Ellie is a girl that lost her mother and her best friend. She found it hard to talk to people. Over time she became more angry at the world for taking the people she cared about away from her but when he realises she’s Infected she thinks that’s all she can do. Ellie doesn’t see herself as a person anymore just a way to cure the virus. Her journey is learning to accept herself and realise she’s not alone anymore she has a father figure that she never had before. In the winter chapter she was tested and almost broke but Joel was there for her ready to comfort and protect her. The giraffe scene is my favourite scene in gaming. It is a moment where Joel and Ellie can be happy unburdened by the world around them. The music perfectly summarises the emotion in the scene. They don’t know that Ellie would have to die for a cure. The giraffes symbolise hope for the future. Ellie knows a lot of people she cared for are dead. The journey to Salt Lake City was a perilous one filled with meeting people only for them to die. Tess Henry Sam. She doesn’t want those deaths to be for nothing. She wants to change the world not knowing that the world is to far gone and a cure wouldn’t change much however Joel knows that the cost is to great. Ellie deserves to live and he does everything in his power to protect her. This game means so much to me and my life would not be the same without it. I am so glad that I gave the game a chance because it has become my favourite game of all time and my favourite story of all time. This game reignited my passion for storytelling and with a newfound empathy and understanding I was able to become a better person.

I've argued against the fireflies not giving Ellie the chance to give consent often. All that said, as a father, I know I would never allow anyone to hurt my child for the supposed greater good so I understand Joel here

Agreed, I totally get both sides. But honestly the fireflies feel like a mess, I don’t think they could even make a cure let alone distribute it. I know they should try, and I don’t know if this ethical dilemma would be nearly as complicated if say Joel was immune. He’s an adult, all the stuff he’s done, maybe this is his way to atone. Ellie is a trauma victim with survivors guilt and a child, that really muddies the water. Joel is being selfish, but as you say as a Dad I wouldn’t stand by for this either.

Graphics were a nice update, but those other things add so much replayability.

I couldn't properly invest myself into the story because of the sheer amount of story beats that it takes from the film, 'Children of Men'. Its one thing to take inspiration from films and television shows when developing a video game but in TLOU 1 it's just on a level that it doesn't particularly feel like it has its own cohesive identity. There was also the fact that I didn't particularly care for the seasonal vignette-driven way that the game segments its story and I didn't particularly care for the side characters introduced in these segments either outside of the relationship between Henry and Sam. I think the game's stellar presentation, just shields the fact the story is just a father that lost a child accompanying a teenage McGuffin girl countrywide road trip through a cavalcade of zombie post apocalypse cliches. Joel and Ellie's relationship with each other is colorful to be sure it's just I didn't really find any of the events that supposedly shaped said relationship particularly compelling.

I know it doesn't matter at this point but I wish there never was a part 2. That was the perfect ending that would have kept us all thinking about it and debating forever. It never needed a sequel and I feel like the first game and especially the ending was hurt by having a sequel. But that's pretty normal for everything that people love. As much as it really should end, these companies just cannot help themselves but to make more money by capitalizing on the popularity of something. But if you just imagine a world were The Last of Us was just a single, stand alone game that ending would have went down in history as one of the great moral questions of fiction. How beautiful and bittersweet.

The Last of Us is one of my all time favorites. Personally, I don't think that the best game of all time is something that truly exists, although it is of course okay to have an all time favorite, which varies for just about everyone. The very fact alone that people are still able to find new ways to discuss Joel's choice at the end is really something to behold, and goes to show how Naughty Dog was able to bring every aspect of this game to life, ranging from the characters, environments, encounters, and set pieces.
It's been great to hear someone as insightful and observant as yourself give a full review of this game, and therefore I'm really looking forward to hear what you have to say about Part II, which I personally have a lot of mixed feelings about. Until then, please keep up the great work, and remember that you've done a great job in both this review and previous ones by providing a very impressive amount of insight in each one of them.

It can be mixed then. I think the characters are super interesting, the story is bold and ambitious, and the gameplay is second to none. I also think the story may be a bit TOO ambitious and that leads to it being a little sloppy and very poorly paced. Now the pros outweigh the cons for me, so I still love it. But it's ok for that to not be the case for you. Despite what Reddit, UA-cam, or Twitter may tell you, it doesn't have to be the worst thing to ever happen to you or the greatest game ever. It can be that (you'd be dramatic but hey it could be). It can also be anywhere in between

The story is great to me and it reflect what's our reality too, in our day to day life we don't have control over every situation, we gotta roll with what's thrown at us and i think that the fact that we agree or disagree with certain aspect of the story makes it just more believable. i do prefer the game play of part ii and i love the environment. every time i finish any of these 2 game i'm saying out loud "what a great fucking game" when i became a fan of uncharted i never thought a franchise could dethrone it and naughty dog did it with TLOU

I honestly believe that on the series of The Last of Us you bear a curse because every time I played them they never impressed me and I never found them memorable because of other games I had played before them.
I bought this game on day one after trying the demo that was along with God of War Ascension, but I only played it a few months later and I must say that the overall experience I enjoyed, but I didn’t find anything memorable because in those years I had played for the first time Silent Hill 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite, Oblivion, Dishonored, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 and other games I also replayed Ico, Devil May Cry and other games that had left me impressed and speechless, for this reason The Last of Us didn’t impress me at the time and I didn’t find it anything memorable.
In 2021 to be able to play TLOU Part 2 for the first time I played the Remastered version of TLOU and again I liked it, but again I did not find anything memorable because in those years I had played Yakuza Kiwami, Deadly Premonition, Before i Forget, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Last Day of June, What Remains of Edith Finch, Final Fantasy IX, Nier Automata and other games that (again) impressed me and left me speechless, which is why this time not just the first TLOU, but also the second did not impress me and I did not find them memorable.
I think if I get to play the first two TLOU again and a possible third TLOU for the TLOU series it will go badly again because in recent years I have played the other Yakuza + spin offs, Titanfall 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Spec Ops: The Line and others games, I have replayed Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill 2 and others games and I have to play the Mass Effect series, Final Fantasy X and other games for the first time.

@@hwanniggles187 I watched the show with my dad, who hasn't played the games. He agreed with Joel's decision despite following his story through a non-interactive medium.
Meanwhile as just one exampe lof someone who played the game; British youtuber named Many A True Nerd while understanding Joel, disagreed with his decision by the end of Part 1, despite playing as him throughout the game.
Basically what I'm saying is: The Last of Us being a video game doesn't guarantee that you agree with Joel like you seemingly imply.
It might help somewhat to mold your opinion towards that of course. It's true that playing as a character gives you some kind of connection with them. How strong that connection is depends on the story being told and the player's personal perspective of course.
Of course I'm being somewhat of a Captain Obvious by saying all this, I realise that. The debate of him doing the right or wrong choice has existed since the game first launched in 2013. Joel's decision has divided people for ten years now despite many of those people playing as him.
I say many because obviously there are some who experience video game stories by let's plays and such.

    • @Egurius3
      @Egurius3 11 місяців тому

@@hwanniggles187 Also I'm going to heavily disagree with the opinion that Joel made a shitty decision for many reasons.
      1. He saved a person that is close to him and whom he loves. From certain perspective that just simply is the right thing to do and sould be considered the right moral choice, despite Joel being motivated by selfish reasons.
      2. Vaccine would barely do anything in the world of The Last of Us, it's already fucked, but also possible to rebuild without it. I'll elaborate on both points.
2.1 Immunity doesn't save people from being killed by the infected when they tear your jaw off or bite off pieces of your neck. Ellie is a living proof of this. Hordes of infected would still be extremely dangerous to you.
2.2 The biggest threath to humans in the world of TLOU is other humans. I will argue that they kill each other more than the infected do. Just look at Part 2's story as one proof of this. In that game not a single main character dies from being infected, or by being killed by infected. All of them die from being killed by other humans.
2.3 The fact that places like Jackson Community, WLF and Seraphites exist and thrive proves that the world can be rebuilt without the vaccine. The only reason WLF and Seraphites get wiped out is because they can't stop fighting each other. The infected have very little to no effect in the downfall of their societies.
So why are all these factions and their people so determined to fight each other? Well this leads to my point number 3.
      3. Vaccine doesn't bring food to a table, it doesn't build you a shelter, and it doesn't give you resources to survive. Humans in the world of TLOU fight each other because they want to have all of those things to ensure their survival even at the cost of other people dying. That and personal grudges. Having a vaccine wouldn't change this basic nature of humans and how they're in constant conflict with each other.
      4. The Fireflies did not give Ellie or Joel a choice, forcing Joel to take action. Had they asked Ellie, the outcome could have been way different. Obviously this makes the Fireflies huge assholes to say the least, and even bad guys from certain perspective. They didn't even allow Joel to keep his gear as they attempted to escort him out of the hospital, which would have been a death sentence for him, or give him the guns he was promised as a deal at the beginning of the game.
      5. The Fireflies wanted to operate on Ellie after spending how much time examining her? Well considering that they performed all of those tests while Joel was unconsious, they must have spent under an hour examining her. They really don't want to take just a little more time before making such a final decision of killing her? And those are the people that should be trusted to make the decision?
      6. Even if the Fireflies manage to make the vaccine, something the two games can't seem to agree on, how could they possibly distribute it around the US? Many roads are fucked, fuel is scarce along with many other resources, and there aren't exactly an abundance of drivable vehicles around. Not to mention all the dangers involved when travelling the world.
      7. Would the Fireflies be willing to give the vaccine to everyone just like that, even if they could? Or would they keep it to themselves? Or would they start making demands in order for other people to get it, creating more wars and power struggles?

Honestly I will not fault those that really do like this game because we're all human beings with differing opinions, but this game never looked appealing to me and I just could not stand how often it was shoved into my face, most notably when I was trying to watch South Park on its website back when I was more into it and the same ad for this game kept playing like 5 times in a row and just furthering my dislike of its existence. Ultimately I've mellowed out from that extreme disdain for The Last of Us' existence because it has every right to exist and be enjoyed by those that connect with its story and characters, but I'll never play it because it just has nothing that really appeals to what I like in a game, I don't like watching stories that have constant downer moments and atmosphere in them, I'm not into horror games which I technically would have to categorize The Last of Us as with its main premise of a "Zombie Apocalypse", and ultimately I feel like this game had an adverse effect on the gaming industry as a whole to further put more focus on a game's story and make it more like a movie than make it an actual game you play. If someone likes the Last of Us and even thinks of it as their favorite game of all time, then I'm happy for them and I'm not gonna stop them, but I'm definitely in the camp that thinks the game is overrated and nowhere near the greatest games of all time.

One thing that I notice that people barely ever bring up is Ellie's mom. What did Ellie's mom want for her? Forget about what Marlene or Joel wanted. What did ANNA want? Anna and Joel were basically on the same page. Ellie wasn't born to just be some pawn for a dying organization. Anna didn't painstakingly give birth to her just to live a lonely life and die a guilt-ridden death.
The people she constantly talks about- Riley, Tess, Sam are people who just showed her enough care for her to believe that she mattered somehow. That's why she's being eaten up by her own guilt. She rarely, if not never, felt cared for throughout her entire life. She was a troubled kid who had no one. That's why she held these people so dearly to her. And what Joel said is true. None of their deaths were on her. Validating her guilt by saying that she could've saved people if she offered herself up to the fireflies is just messed up especially if we remind ourselves that Ellie is a kid suffering from PTSD (David) and severe survivor's guilt.
Besides, Marlene wasn't out there to "save the world". She was out there to save her dying organization. If she truly only wanted to save the world, why didn't se try to meet Ellie and Joel halfway? Why did they just wait for them to somehow show up? Did Marlene even think Ellie was still alive? Cause iirc there's a recording/note where she ponders the possibility that they could've died already. They were barely pulling their own weight and yet suddenly they have full control over what happens to Ellie's life?

Before i write this just want to say this opinion is all me and full of bias.
Watching this video I think I understand a bit more why I loved the original so much and why the second didn't hit for me?
No questions, like after playing the ending all the years ago I was obsessed in this really cool and positive cycle of discussion of was Joel right or wrong, what would you do if it was your loved one, is it even worth trying to restore a world so broken and so on and so forth that were all equally valid as they all upheld a theme of the the complexity of human emotion which was so gratifying and fun years after the game even released.
The second one had a specific message it wanted to tell and there was no room for discussion Ellie was wrong, Abby was wrong but redeemed herself both have lost everything, revenge is bad, forgiveness is good and trauma and grief drives us to do horrible things. Thats about it and I found it really boring paired with the immeasurable expectation I had from the first game but hey I can't fault it for trying a new direction
