Interesting talking points for sure. As far as the GS comment. I know when I walk into a watch shop wearing my GS, that is the one the dealer employees come over to look at. That second hand sweep is hypnotic. And I get great compliments on the texture of my watch face (SBGA 429 soko)
Totally agree! Walked into a Breitling boutique with my SBGA407 and the staff were amazed with the quality of it. Out of my collection the GS gets the most compliments.
You have the best combination of knowledge and thoughtfulness in the watch blog universe. Always enlightening to hear what you have to say, Teddy. Keep up the good work.
I think that the GS design language is somewhat restrained and refined with a big focus on business. I think this reflects the Japanese market where business men wear suits to work every day and would need something elegant, but not gaudy. Something I like about GS is the integration of texture and natural themes into a watch dial. It’s feels like they’re using impressionist designs to evoke a feeling when viewed which elevates what would otherwise be a plain dress watch.
@@Dylan-xj8tb I will have to admit to only really talking about their elegance and heritage models. Should have stated that in my original comment. They have a couple sports models that are okay, but most feel like they don’t quite land. I like the sbge255 for example.

The salesperson was telling me the story that the reverso was invented for polo players so they could protect their watch while playing. I said that they are fools playing polo wearing a $15,000 watch when they could just wear a Gshock.
The point about bad quality is valid though... You can get a citizen or timex or casio for that price that will be built much better. Other than that I agree that the Vostok is a cool quirky watch with interesting history. But objectively, it's pretty bad
I love FP Journe. IMO they don't make watches, they make art. Thank you to those who can afford them and buy them -- you are patrons of art and enable these (and other exquisite timepieces) to be made.
"Everyone can buy a speedmaster..." what's the problem with that? So you want people to not be able to buy a Speedy? What crap logic, it just goes to show that it's no longer about the watch, it's just the clout for some.
It's a shame such "logic" is still quite common around things like watches. Most people can buy a Civic or Corolla, but that doesn't mean they're not great cars. Similarly, relatively few people can afford a Range Rover (compared to Civics/Corollas), but their reliability is notoriously bad! 🤣
Anything from Rolex, the Royal Oak, the Nautilus. There’s a ton of watches out there and there’s maybe 10 of them that seems like they suck all the oxygen out of a room.
That’s because they are the “best” I own all those brands including 13 Rolex, 6 AP, 1 PP and a cartier tank which I got 45% from my AD. All my pieces are from my AD.
At least PP have an actual range of watches. AP are such a one-trick pony it blows me away. The ‘Holy Trinity’ nonsense means that they get away with sitting back and changing the odd dial whilst other brands bust their balls trying to come up with new designs and movements.
@@ProfessorPesca I mean AP tried to change things up with the Royal Oak Offshore, and we all know how bad that backfired. If you ask me, the target audience for AP doesn't want them to change, they made that very clear. And AP listens. Also, Covid makes it incredibly difficult to release a new watch for any watchbrand in the higher price category, its just hard to acquire the requested materials at the moment. I kinda get why they behave the way they do,
@@Chrispack93 You’ve got an excellent point, why *should* AP change their ways because a few people on the internet who can’t afford their watches anyway complain about it?
As an owner of a GS I would agree that the bracelet could use improvement. But its not a deal breaker for me. Its still a fantastic piece and the accuracy is legendary. Most importantly it simply suits me.
I'd much rather own a watch whose major knock is the bracelet rather than the actual watch itself. 😁 Anyway, Rolex buyers always put it on a different strap to "preserve" their winning bracelet. So yeah, GS is the better watch with an inferior bracelet.
I own a GS as well (SBGR255). If Grand Seiko upgraded their bracelets a bit with fit and finish, and added a glide-lock type mechanism for adjustment, they would be more of a threat to their Swiss competitors. In addition, if they tightened up their accuracy on their automatic movements, they would become true juggernauts with all of the aforementioned improvements. I do think they will eventually improve in these areas.
At least the Vostok is cheap enough, with parts widely available enough that I'm not afraid to take it apart and make modification to it. May not be the best watch ever, but it certainly got me into the hobby more than simply ownership.
You have to think that RM will go down, anytime people start “talking about things” before it ever happens, it’s usually a self fulfilling prophecy, especially when it’s the best of the best in the business!
Being a military guy wore nothing but GShocks for 26years...This channel got me into watches..I started with a Vostok Amphibia 9-10 months ago...Now I have 2 Seikos and a costly Tag Heure, Looking at another Seiko soon
I own a few of these and I’m glad you included the Nautilus, I was mega excited to get one 9 years ago for my 40th, I sold off some vintage Rolex pieces to buy it and I now deeply regret that, I got mine at a discount and when I went to collect it I was seriously underwhelmed, I was amazed to see the pin and collar system in the bracelet and the underside of the flip on the clasp was dull and unfinished, the watch was a disaster going back to Patek three times in the two year warranty period for time keeping and a stuck fast date change, apparently a common fault. I also agree if you pay £29,000.00 for the Daytona it’s overpriced but at retail it’s the best watch ever and my favourite going out watch at the minute, I love wearing it and only became a fan when they made the bezel ceramic. I don’t think the Submariner should be include for the simple reason it’s a lifetime watch, when you get one you never need another, it also matches everything you wear, thank you for yet another great video.
"When you speak bad against Vostoks, people are coming for you" - Nothing but the truth And as an avid photographer and a fan of watches with a history I think if it wasn't for the Cold War and the portrayal of USSR/Russia in the west, David Doubilet's first dive watch could have been a Vostok rather than a Rolex (Which he bought with a rubber band cause he couldn't afford to buy it with the bracelet)
Imagine thinking that a watch retailing for the £9.99 price point with the features, comfortability and durability its provided for the last 3 decades gets called overrated. I think it deserves all the praise it gets. The fact that almost anyone can have one and almost everyone loves it till this day, says it all
I just hate digital watches cause they look dumb unless they are more elegant. I like G-shocks a bit and I like the casi-oak cause they feel like a real watch instead of a digital screen that tells time
There is just something about a Speedy Pro that I still love and even with a 20 plus watch collection I still find myself just staring at it when I have it on compared to some others.
I love my Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust. Bought it 37 years ago and I have had it on my wrist ever since and it still works 100%. I have changed the bracelet (jubilee) twice and the glass has been replaced once. The movement has also been cleaned twice and the gasket replaced in connection with the crown ditto. Otherwise I love Omega Speedmaster from the same time period :)
Vostok has a wobbly crown. Well if you took 5 more minutes of your life to know why then you wouldn't be bashing it. Also it's known to go to 800m before breaking or leaking
I agree that GS has room to grow in the Sports collection and for the most part I think they are already moving in that direction. It’s true that unlike in 2017/2018 GS is no longer an underdog and one of the few brands that really shined throughout 2020 and now more people respect GS as a major luxury watch player in their price point.
Nice Commentary, Great insight from a broad perspective, and very inclusive for many different kinds of watches from someone who really does like many different kinds of watches:)
f91w is not overrated, it is rated just fine for what it is. Super comfortable, durable, accurate, practical daily watch that has a well known image and a very strong brand behind it.
Teddy could you make a video of how watches had trends in which time slots? So like the 70’s with the integrated bracelet sports watches. Very interested to hear about watches in the 40’s, how the watch style was and changed over to the 50’s etc. Hard to cover all of it but just the general “fashion”? Thanks again for all the content - new watch enthusiast and learning so much from you
Really enjoyed this, Teddy, and the readers’ comments were well chosen to kickstart each segment. So much comes down to personal choice, manufacture, design aesthetics and one’s style, ego and wallet and I enjoy learning what separates the most coveted from hype. Nice job and thanks!
I have a Dytona and its nothing special ,really. I like Rolex for its robustness and got mine late 90s. Do i think they are worth what the flippers are asking?..............hell no! They are worth what the retail price is , and not a penny more.
@@stevej4629 id much rather a daytona than any zenith breitling or omega. Zenith's only appealing model currently is just a blatent daytona ripoff. 95% of the breitling lineup is trash. Current omegas are either too thick or too ugly. The only good omega is the moonwatch, and id still rather have the daytona at any price. People pay crazy prices for it, but it's a store of value and highly liquid, so price is irrelevant.
Saw your Vostok review Teddy. Bought one myself in Russia for 70 $. Waited for about three weeks to arrive. Have been wearing this watch on so many occasions the past months, +/- 5 sec a day. What a great watch. Meanwhile my Omega's are yammering in the waiting room.
It’s mind blowing that people wait in line to pay more than what the manufacturer is valuing their pieces. But I guess I will never understand those people paying a premium for mediocre Rolex watches when there is VC, JLC, Breguet, ALS and others.
I don’t think it’s a fair comparison to place Rolex in with JLC, Breguet, ALS and VC. Rolex is a sports watch brand so movement finishing and such isn’t a priority for them like the other brands. I agree with your sentiment though.
@@user-eb7ns2or1j In their price point, they are not special but I agree, they will last a lifetime. But do you know what other watch will last a lifetime? A 300 dollars Orient will also last about the same. The watch which brought me into this hobby is an Orient owned by my grandfather, which used it as a daily watch starting in the early '70s all the way to 2015. According to him, that watch was never serviced and it was running 10 seconds late after all this time.
I like how Teddy stays grounded and remembers how his passion started. The watch that I will keep forever is the Komandirskie I bought in February of 1990 in Soviet-era Odessa, Ukraine.
Great conversation! It’s amazing that a sub $100 Vostok us in the same discussion of overrated watches as the Patek. Let’s not even ask about that Casio.
I DON'T know about "over rated" but I do think you CAN acquire a less expensive watch that'll give you good, daily service. It might NOT catch the eyes of everyone who sees your wrist but it'll get the job done almost as well as the hyper expensive one.
Great discussion, Teddy! Mostly agree with you. For sooo many years it was only the Submariner, now I am really enjoying learning about many other watches, and along the way, learning more about myself!
Some of these takes feel like they're conflating overpriced on the secondary/gray market with being overrated. In those cases, you've got a chunk of that being due to people using watches as an asset class without much care about the watch itself so it's not even a case of watch enthusiasts overvaluing the things. I can understand where a lot of these opinions are coming from though even if I don't agree with them, e.g. I think that the standard Speedmaster Moonwatch and Rolex Sub are kind of boring to look at but that's also what makes them versatile pieces and both are high quality watches. I just know that if I had either they'd mostly be relegated to "well I can't figure out what color watch to pair with this outfit so I'll just grab a black watch" duty. That said, I think the Vostok take hilariously missed the point. I'm pretty sure Vostok fans agree that they're janky watches and think that's part of the appeal. They're akin to the people in the US that add a Yugo, Trabant, or other communist era crapcan car to their garage for fun.
Absolutely spot on. I would say, and I know we’re dipping into semantics here, that the inflated prices we are currently experiencing on some pieces equate to their being overrated. Do they become overrated because many folks equate price with quality, or is it the other way around? I certainly don’t know, but I’d wager there is quite a bit of “it’s the most expensive, so it must be the best” kind of thing going on.
I agree with you on the Vostok Amphibia. How can it be overrated? It has unique features, like the XX-size gasket with the screw on ring and the domed, expanding crystal for improved water pressure resistance. On top of that the Vostok is dirt cheap. I would say the Amphibia is heavily underrated. Best value for money if you want a tool watch.
To sum up the Amfibia For normal person : it's a watch For lux watch snob : it's a stubborn piece of strap For dive watch snob : it's a legend For normal watch enthu : it's a cult if not meme
Yes more videos like this!! Loved every second of it, great video Teddy! Personally, I think Ming is getting a bit over-hyped. Save for the 18.01 and 19.01, the rest looks like variations of each other, and the secondary market prices are crazy
As a fan of watches I’ve started to dislike the watch market. The price of watches have gotten out of control and dealers on the secondary market are driving up prices by selling them to other dealers.
Teddy, on the flip side, a super underrated watch is the JLC Master Compressor Memovox on the OE bracelet. You get a high-beat, in-house movement that is finished as well as a Patek, you get a melodious mechanical alarm, internally rotating dive bezel, compressor crowns, great water resistance, legible and unique dial, gorgeous case with RG 1000 hour movement medallion on the caseback and that bracelet is one of the nicest finished and most comfortable you'll ever wear (bracelets are rare, as most people wear the MCM on a strap, which is super nice too). In short, it's the one watch, watch collection. Dressy, sporty, bracelet, strap... it does it all. Oh, and short production run makes them somewhat hard to find.
I agree to a point about the Casio, as I have also seen video after video extolling the virtues of this watch. I agree with the point that many of us that watch these videos are more interested in mechanical and automatic watches, where a quartz watch has to possess desirable attributes (for me, the Longines Conquest VHP, the only quartz watch on my list). That said, it's a great watch if you love it, and is a great watch if you need an inexpensive watch that can take a knock or rough wear and survive, Great for work, working in the yard, hiking, rock climbing, sky diving, and generally casual wear. Also a great first watch for kids 10 years and above.
You can say the same for vintage Leica or Porsche but look where the price is at now. If you can afford the market price, get it; if you can't than move on, end of story. No need to cry about it.
Can someone explain to me a $50k quartz movement watch? I’m relatively new to the hobby, and I thought most of the cost of high horology was in the well finished automatic movements?
Agreed, but that’s my question. My cell phone doesn’t cost 50k. So what’s the purpose of the quartz movement costing 50k? Is the battery really well decorated ? Lol
Switzerland workers are very well paid. The mininum wage there is ridiculous. So, thats explain why in-house automatic movements, made in Swiss, are higher value. You pay for the craft work.
Great questions & perfect answers Teddy. But this forum makes what watch collecting is all about - personal style & opinions. I have several of these watches you spoke about and I agree with both sides. Great video!
A well balanced and informative video Teddy, not just going with the opinions of the crowd but challenging them with the facts. In a nut shell supply and demand. Well done!
There is no Rolex waiting list. There is however an AD beauty pageant where they assess you the customer as a potential client before they ignore you completely. Rolex the company should be very very ashamed of the way customers, old and new, are treated.
Rolex are anything but rare, rolex produce 1,000,000 watches a year. Look at companies like zenith who produce around 25,000 watches a year. Rolex is over rated.
I agree when you say that certain of these models are not overrated but rather over exposed. As for a “boring” GS, I’d take boring anytime 😉 Thanks for sharing your opinions.
I conservatively estimate, if you multiply the number of Daytonas in existence since Day 1, by the “asking price,” you get a number somewhere around $4B USD. That happens to be the ballpark market capitalization of the Casio corporation. Overrated? That ain’t cricket, Baby.
Very entertaining show! The Vostock comments made me laugh - I completely agree with the gentleman's opinion, but love 'em anyway! As far as the SKX, I tried on a friend's, loved the wear, and bought an Islander with better, more modern components.
Funny thing is the 24xx movements derive from the 22xx movements which took inspiration from swiss design. Oh and I am got a C3 Favinov dial and hands as well as a signed crown and steel wired bezel
I've actually sold all of my Rolex watches (7 of them) because as a brand they have become toxic. They aren't a good advert for watch collecting in general 👎
This video could be used as a lesson in restraint lol. The moment I read the comments about GS and FP Journe, I was already huffing and puffing but you did a great job in seeing both sides of the argument!
Great video Teddy. Styles and appreciation are subjective despite what this, that or the other fanboy may say but...and for the most part, I think it largely boils down to what you are getting for the price. Of the pieces you have spoken about I own a Submariner and a Speedmaster but...I bought the Speedy in 98 and Sub in 2003 (and no guys, you don't want to know what I paid. It would only depress you ;) They were 'value' at what I paid for them then...but not what (particularly the Sub) they trade at now. A 12K Sub on the grey market...or a 4K Omega Seamaster that you can actually buy. Not much of a decision if you ask me!
Nowadays, I really start to fall asleep immediately when I hear the words “Submariner” or “Moonwatch” and/or see them come up on the screen. These horses have really been beaten to death and are now just plain boring (IMHO)…
Could not agree more, these watches are absolutely beaten to death. Same two watches, with people saying the same exact thing, because the watches have been exactly the same for 40+ years. Enough already. Teddy is right also, that every 2nd watch from every other brand is some homage to these two. Oversaturation is an understatement. At least the Sub looks like a standard dive watch, but I think the Speedmaster is Omega's ugliest watch and I say that as a big Omega fan. It just has zero personality or detail. Adding a dial color every two years doesn't count lmao
I've wanted a moonwatch since I was a child, now I'm in a position to buy one.... and I'm struggling to pull the trigger, because of this. So common it's almost boring

Snagged my Panda new on a trip to Hong Kong during “the troubles” in Oct 2019. I thought I overpaid at the time ($16,500USD), but now I’m pleased with the purchase. Always wanted a Daytona, and specifically a Panda when they were released. A special 40th birthday treat.
Ugh.... the Daytona. The only Rolex I would want to wear. Yeah, it is way over-hyped in all catagories. Fredarico talks watches called out the Rolex craze a few weeks back. They are machine made, machine finished entry level (maybe) $5k watches being sold for 10 grand. There is nothing really special about them. If you like them and are happy with yours, I am happy for you. But their strongest quality is their branding and marketing.
@japanwatchconnection sounds to me like he was giving an honest opinion about a product that keeps the lights on in his store. The opposite of selling out. And nobody said they are bad watches. They ARE a Rolex. They are a fine watch. But the fact they are having people buy them in one jewelry store and walk next door to another jewelry store and selling them for a few thousand in profit is crazy. They are good. Not that good.
I have to say your comments are spot on. The secondary market on some watches is outrageous and frankly makes some people ( including me) not interested in those watches. So we explore other options and, in my case have been very please.
I can't imagine even giving a moments though about a watch you buy any day at walmart for under $20. Nothing that is cheap can be overrated. Great takes. Though I love the design of the Daytona and want to disagree, I think we can’t. The zenith Chronomaster Original is a perfect example why…. Much cheaper price even comparing at Retail and arguably a better piece in every way technically. No sane person would buy the Daytona over it for the price difference. Stop the madness!

I said that they are fools playing polo wearing a $15,000 watch when they could just wear a Gshock.
I have not checked out Vostok but I wll now!

That’s because they are the “best”

All my pieces are from my AD.

At least PP have an actual range of watches. AP are such a one-trick pony it blows me away. The ‘Holy Trinity’ nonsense means that they get away with sitting back and changing the odd dial whilst other brands bust their balls trying to come up with new designs and movements.
@@ProfessorPesca I mean AP tried to change things up with the Royal Oak Offshore, and we all know how bad that backfired. If you ask me, the target audience for AP doesn't want them to change, they made that very clear. And AP listens. Why change something when a) everything is running amazingly for you and b) people apparently hate it when you do something new.
Most importantly it simply suits me.
and one can also put it on a strap...
I'd much rather own a watch whose major knock is the bracelet rather than the actual watch itself. 😁 Anyway, Rolex buyers always put it on a different strap to "preserve" their winning bracelet. So yeah, GS is the better watch with an inferior bracelet.
I just bought my first GS (SBGX341) and I love it, but it could definitely use a better bracelet.
Love my SBGE201 but was not in love with the bracelet. I do very much love the ox blood leather rally strap I replaced said bracelet.

What happened to your Nautilus? Did you sell it? If you did/plan to, what kind of profit do you think you'll make?
That's a sucky experience especially for a dream watch
Right on with the Rolex comments.
I guess you're mad because you sold the patek, now that it's exploded in value
Informative and entertaining. A perfect combo. Great work TB.

And as an avid photographer and a fan of watches with a history I think if it wasn't for the Cold War and the portrayal of USSR/Russia in the west, David Doubilet's first dive watch could have been a Vostok rather than a Rolex (Which he bought with a rubber band cause he couldn't afford to buy it with the bracelet)
Maybe, but certainly would have been filled up with water after the first dive 😂
Imagine thinking that a watch retailing for the £9.99 price point with the features, comfortability and durability its provided for the last 3 decades gets called overrated. I think it deserves all the praise it gets.
The fact that almost anyone can have one and almost everyone loves it till this day, says it all

Teddy could you make a video of how watches had trends in which time slots? So like the 70’s with the integrated bracelet sports watches. Very interested to hear about watches in the 40’s, how the watch style was and changed over to the 50’s etc. Hard to cover all of it but just the general “fashion”? It’s mind blowing that people wait in line to pay more than what the manufacturer is valuing their pieces. But I guess I will never understand those people paying a premium for mediocre Rolex watches when there is VC, JLC, Breguet, ALS and others.
Those 4 should be named as the holy quad....just pure love.
I don’t think Rolexes are mediocre watches they last you a long time and they are made out of god quality
Mediocre brands are vincero or hublot
I don’t think it’s a fair comparison to place Rolex in with JLC, Breguet, ALS and VC. Rolex is a sports watch brand so movement finishing and such isn’t a priority for them like the other brands. I agree with your sentiment though.
@@user-eb7ns2or1j In their price point, they are not special but I agree, they will last a lifetime. But do you know what other watch will last a lifetime? A 300 dollars Orient will also last about the same. Always a great video. Fine watch talk.
I DON'T know about "over rated" but I do think you CAN acquire a less expensive watch that'll give you good, daily service. It might NOT catch the eyes of everyone who sees your wrist but it'll get the job done almost as well as the hyper expensive one.
Not quite as snappy a title for a video tho, hey?! 😉
I was waiting for Richard Mille. Absolutely overrated and overpriced
Great discussion, Teddy!
Mostly agree with you. For sooo many years it was only the Submariner, now I am really enjoying learning about many other watches, and along the way, learning more about myself!
The Nautilus looks like it was commissioned for Fred Flintstone
"What's the time, Fred?"
"Yabba-dabba-doooo!!!"
100%. Great perspective.
To sum up the Amfibia

For lux watch snob : it's a stubborn piece of strap
For dive watch snob : it's a legend
For normal watch enthu : it's a cult if not meme
Yes more videos like this!! Loved every second of it, great video Teddy! Personally, I think Ming is getting a bit over-hyped. Save for the 18.01 and 19.01, the rest looks like variations of each other, and the secondary market prices are crazy
Another great video Teddy! 👏
As a fan of watches I’ve started to dislike the watch market. The price of watches have gotten out of control and dealers on the secondary market are driving up prices by selling them to other dealers.
That's because many people nowadays buy watches as an investment, as they would buy gold or bitcoin
The crash is coming .
Can't wait .

That slating of the Amphibia is just nonsense ..Some people dont get the genius of the design but that's their loss and means more for the rest of us.

Hey Teddy, just wanna congratulate you on your following. I came in around 50k.. and dang you've taken off. Great job
Really enjoyed this video, should definitely make more like this!
You can say the same for vintage Leica or Porsche but look where the price is at now. If you can afford the market price, get it; if you can't than move on, end of story. No need to cry about it.
I love your shirts, can tell me where do you buy it or the brand ?
Can someone explain to me a $50k quartz movement watch? I’m relatively new to the hobby, and I thought most of the cost of high horology was in the well finished automatic movements?
Your cell phone is a million times more complicated than any high horology automatic movement. What you are paying for is the artistic value.
Thank you so much for answering this clearly… I suspected that was what was going on 😂👍🏻

3:48 - from what I know, that wobbly crown on Vostoks is intentional, it makes the movement more resistant to physical impact
I conservatively estimate, if you multiply the number of Daytonas in existence since Day 1, by the “asking price,” you get a number somewhere around $4B USD. That happens to be the ballpark market capitalization of the Casio corporation. Overrated? That ain’t cricket, Baby.

Great video Teddy.
