Hi Gillian, I was wondering if there are any songs from the Countdown period that you would like the Haniers to react to. These could be Aussie songs, International songs, or just songs made popular by the Countdown kids. From the 8th to 16th, the Haniers will be looking at songs famous from the Countdown period... I have songs like Sherbets' ''Silvery Moon'', Skyhooks ''Living In the 70's'', Iggy Pop ''I'm Bored'', The Cure's ''Primary'', and Dan Hartman's ''Countdown'' on my request list. Perhaps you have your own songs?
@@OnceWasRStrathfield Ha, ha - great selection. I hate Iggy Pop. He shouldn't be part of Countdown history, but that's just my opinion. My friend was at the receiving end of his spit, and I will hold that against him forever. Every other song is great. I am quite keen for Fischer Z's ''So Long''. I think Australia was the only place where the song got to be a hit, and it was a song that was made popular by the Countdown kids. Colleen Hewett's ''Dreaming My Dreams With You'' would also be wonderful to see on this channel. That's about it really. Thank you for asking me! That is really nice you! 🐕
That wasn't me looking at the camera. At 3:13 I'm right in the centre clapping and looking up. My hair is brown, I'm wearing a white top and I have a fringe. I think you could describe me as a pale. Hey, H & G ! .. I've been looking forward to this comparison, particularly as I was first alerted to the Split Enz version by Hayley because of being able to spot Gillian in the audience and grabbing Tim's hand .. I couldn't really remember that the Enz had done this one, let alone actually doing it first .. And I've always loved Jo's version .. It's Jo! I don't know what it is about Starstruck that managed to get its hooks into a lot us kids in Australia at the time, but it did to us what Grease and The Rocky Horror Picture Show has done to other people. Maybe we just didn't have much Australian cinematic representation that spoke to us at the time. It was a cheesy movie with a lot of cartoon-Aussie acting and slightly annoying characters, but we all loved it. I'm sure Baz Luhrmann was influenced by it. I only knew the Split Enz version through Countdown and seeing the music video on TV. It was a nice goofy song, but Jo made it into a fun bopper and I like that.
Starstruck version! I think I had just returned to Australia after a couple of years in England when Enz released their version. Thought nothing of them until ''I Got You'' became a major thing. I could only take Starstruck as a movie in small doses, but Jo was no doubt a hottie. Can't deny it! Gillian had much softer, more angelic features than the girl looking at the camera. The clapping kid at the front of the stage is definitely her.
The girl having a peek at the camera isn't Gillian. She was a Countdown studio regular and I think her name's Patricia. She's probably the easiest Countdown kid to spot on many episodes between '77 to '82. She habitually looked at the camera, and is even seen ringing the bell at the start of The Ramones' in-studio performance of ''Rock 'n' Roll High School''. Nice girl and a bit strong-headed from what I remember.
I choose Split Enz. I only got to hear ''She's Got Body'' by Enz a year before Starstruck came out, and when I heard Jo's version, I was just "'oh boy!''. Very cool movie for those that like New Wave before the 80's became the 80's.
I can see Gillian, looking all innocent, clapping with a smoke machine blowing that crap in her face , she had very nice hair lol The hell with running to that stage .. Ask me in 1982 which I thought was better and I would have snarled ''neither'', but as an old man that has no cool to defend, I'm going with Jo Kennedy. It's still tough to say, but I'm charmed by everything that Jo has to offer. It's unfair because it's from a movie, but I do like it more.
I hear you mate, I hated the movie back then as I had to take my 14 year old sister and her friends to the pictures in the city as I had my drivers licence. I will have to watch the movie now and see if my taste in flicks has changed in the last 40 odd years.

The Jo Kennedy version was from the 1982 Gillian May Armstrong movie ''Starstruck''. It was the movie she made before she did pretty well in Hollywood.
It's a tie! Both serve very different purposes. I just check out Jo Kennedy and she's only 62, which means she was 20 when she was doing this? I checked out an interview she did with Donnie Sutherland in 1982, and she looks and talks like somebody much older than 20. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Came back to this song after a couple of decades and neither has improved with age. Interesting that Countdown has become part of Australia's cultural fabric. At the time, it just seemed like a lot of silliness and pop music.
Jo's version. Why not! We weren't crazy for Split Enz's verison when it was released and time hasn't changed that. That girl that turned to the camera isn't Gillian. Much too old. Gillian was a cute little possum and FYI, she was seeing if Tim applied paint on his hands like he had on his face. Today's video is very cute!
Hi Carebear, Countdown is turning 50. Do you have any particular songs from the Countdown era ('75 to '87) that you would like the Haniers to do? Could be Aussie songs, international songs, songs only big with Countdown kids, or songs made big by Countdown kids? I have a few songs by Skyhooks, Sherbet, William Shakespear, Dan Hartman, Iggy Pop, The Cure and The Ramones. Are there any songs from the Countdown era that you want the Haniers to check out?
@@OnceWasRStrathfield Hi OnceWas.. I can only think of songs that this channel has already done. You seem to have a gauge of Countdown hits, so I'll leave it in your hands.
Hi Autoberry, I was talking to the Haniers and they're interested in taking a look at some hits from the Countdown period (1974 to 87). I have a few songs in mind, but I thought of asking people that were part of Countdown if they have particular songs from the Countdown period that they would like to see the Haniers react to. These songs can be Australian, International or just hits made famous by Countdown kids. I've already asked Mindteaser, Live It Up, and Countdown kid the same question.
I can't choose either, but Split Enz are a touch above Jo Kennedy. They play like seasoned pro's and not some band put together for a movie. lol.. How different did The Harbour View Hotel look back then! All I can is that the food at The Harbour View Hotel is divine! Beautiful sea food.. The oysters are divine!
I think you nailed it, Kaitlyn .. Both versions are terrific, but I prefer Split Enz, and I think your comment "They play like seasoned pros and not some band put together for a movie" is probably the reason I do .. Definitely more musicality from their performance.
@@wayne_twentyfive G'day Wayne .. Too right !! I used to see bands at pubs and clubs since I was 13, so I knew who were seasoned and who weren't by the time I could legally enter pubs. I first saw Enz open for Roxy Music and then Lou Reed at the Hordern in '75, and then I saw them on and off through the 70's, including 1979 .. a few months before ''I Got You''. They were just great and seemed to be getting better. The experience influences my impression !!
@@kaitlynbatt_ What a great musical upbringing you had, Kaitlyn ! .. I'm envious, as I was quite the shy, stay-at-home type of kid and young adult, and didn't really start going out and seeing live bands until my mid-20s .. Wish now that I'd been doing what you were at your age, soaking in the pub rock scene, and seeing great bands like Split Enz from their early days onwards .. Not to mention those cool OS acts like Roxy Music and Lou Reed in concert .. You would have learnt to be able to spot the best musicians when you heard them .. Cheers, Wayne
@@wayne_twentyfive I grew up in Potts Point/Kings Cross and had older friends that would look out for me. I got hooked on bands from 13, and saw almost everybody that played around Sydney.. Hey, mid 20's isn't bad though! Who you see in your time?
Split Enz in my opinion is best, Jo Kennedys was from a movie called Starstruck which I was forced to sit through at the pictures back in 82. Wasn't up my alley I am afraid, just looked it up on IMDB and it got a 6.8 out of 10 so I guess I have no taste in movies. LOL
I am choosing Split Enz. I think there's more going on in Split Enz's version, while Jo's is playing too much by numbers, like she's singing to a karaoke tracks. I must say that seeing the kids running to the Countdown stage to cheer Split Enz on warms my heart. That was the second generation of Countdown kids, who were getting ready for the 80's and were to take Split Enz to the top. I really think we were bigger fans of Split Enz than the previous kids and older Split Enz fans. We bought everything they had to offer and pushed them very hard in Australia once ''I Got You'' topped the charts. Say what you like you 70's hippies, uni students, old Countdown kids, art school hipsters... We, the 78 to 82 Countdown kids, really did put Split Enz on the map .. at least in Australia. By the way , I did think for a second that the girl looking at the camera was me, but doing my maths I think I wouldn't have been that age at the time.
Hi Mindteaser... Countdown is turning 50 on the 8th, and the Haniers will be taking a look at some Countdown songs. Do you have any particular songs from the Countdown era that you would like the Haniers to react to? Could be Aussie songs, International songs or songs made popular by Countdown kids. @@OnceWasRStrathfield Hi OnceWas. What an interesting idea! I have to admit that my favourite songs from the Countdown years are already popular songs that C + C would already know. C + C have covered a lot of ground in Australian music, and their channel is probably the most ''Countdown'' channel I've seen on UA-cam. I can't think of any song that would be specific to the Countdown era, but thanks for asking.
I'll get my choice out of the way. Jo Kennedy because it just has so much life and vibe to it. It was made to get people dancing. Aside from filling up an album, I don't really know what Split Enz's version was made for. It wasn't a remarkable choice of single. No way! That girl is definitely not Gillian. She looks looks to be 14/15 and she's wearing mascara! Gillian wasn't yet a teenager at this time. Hayley and Gillian had and still have beautiful. Not to sound weird, but watching this video reminded me of the times I brushed Gillian's hair when we were kids. I have to laugh at Chris's comment on not looking at the camera. It was part of the rule to not stare at the camera. Countdown didn't like having the same faces or studio regulars showing up on screen in every episode, because the producers thought continuity on each show was a bad look. You start to avoid the camera after about 5 shows because the novelty of seeing yourself on TV wears off.
_Starstruck_ was a cult film in the States, just so you know. A few bored and lonely Midwestern kids in small towns watched this to escape the bfuk surroundings. I'm only repeating what friends told me.
Sorry to keep saying oh this reminds me of, but I'm going to do it again, split endz sound, just a wee bit like the small face's, nick Finn's voice is a bit like the legendary Steve Marriotts, the second ones okay aswell, it's a draw for me 🏴✌️
I hope one day they will get to PETER AND THE TEST TUBE BABIES banned from the pub and The UK SUBS WARHEAD. gently get them into some old British punkrock and see if we can push the boundaries into something heavier later 😜
* *Tim* Finn 😉 Yes, I do hear those similarities, too! 🙂 But I hear even stronger ones to Feargal Sharkey's voice, who'd once been The Undertones' singer, before having a successful solo career in the 80's (at least across Europe) 🙂
@mightyV444 yes MV, I can hear fergal too, what I like about Tom Finn is he's not trying to sound like Marriott, I'm going to listen to more of there stuff , I don't know how there going to fare against the models and inxs, who are pretty much tops of my go to Aussie bands so far 🏴✌️
I have to be honest. I was gearing up to see Gillybean's little face like she was a star on Young Talent Time, and instead I see nothing more than a cheek .. a side of a face .. not even the whole face.. That's what Gillybean wanted to bring to today's show 'n' tell. I was a real smart ass as a kid.. but even I knew not to play tip for tag with a host on a TV show. The poor bloke had been waiting four years to host Countdown and Gillybean's ready to pull him off the stage... Both songs were terrible.. Jo Kennedy's version being worst of the two... I hated it then and I hate it now. I hated Grease (my daughter and wife love it, unfortunately) and I hated Starstruck... No disrespect to good old Tim Finn, but if it was Peter Garrett hosting Countdown, Gillybean would have kept her girly little hands to herself.... Garrett would have extended that ''energy crisis'' intro into a 5 minute speech inbetween those Dickies, KISS and Knack songs.. All awful songs by the way.. Maybe the KISS one would have been okay... Disappointing all in all!

@@OnceWasRStrathfield Sorry for not getting back earlier. That's a good idea. ''Sooner Or Later'' by The Innocents would be my pick.
@@carebear-fm4pe Great pick! 👍
The ''funny part'' had to be Gillian's prank on Tim. Good to see a bit of Countdown on here. The show's turning 50 in Nov.
@@wayne_twentyfive I responded. You need to go to Sort by, Newest first and then find this comment again.
Hey guys, you chose well. The amusing part was seen, and is already mentioned in comments. It's a draw for me.
And if you enjoy Jo Kennedy the movie is Starstruck
Must be from 74 to 87 (the Countdown years)!
Btw the American version of Frenzy is better. It came out after I Got you. some tracks were from Demos and others remixed.
But I hear even stronger ones to Feargal Sharkey's voice, who'd once been The Undertones' singer, before having a successful solo career in the 80's (at least across Europe) 🙂
@mightyV444 😬 oops tim Finn 🏴✌️
@JamesDickson-vs5of - Just as well Split Enz aren't Australian but from _my_ country New Zealand!
😁 😉
It has to be Jo Kennedy! No disrespect to Split Enz, but Jo made a lot of fun out of a pretty ordinary Split Enz number.
I'm not keen on either one. So it's a draw
