It took him one offseason of hard work with Radek Duda as skillcoach, and outta nowhere he was a beast.
As a Canucks fan, it still makes me mad hearing the JT Miller chants. Not the time. I get season opener excitement, but a dude is on the ice injured. Shit like that is why the rest of the league hates us. The hit wasn't even really a hit. They both were chasing the puck, but Rooney was a bit more laser focused on the puck and less on his surroundings. Miller couldn't realistically change his path, he was chasing the puck too. He protected himself when he seen Rooney also chasing the buck, and braced for contact. Rooney didn't, fell awkwardly. Hopefully he's okay though.
The replay of the hit at 2:28 to 2:35, showing Rooney with that sideways head smack into the boards, had him looking just like Tua did after his last concussion, lying motionless with his arms reaching upwards towards the sky. It was just an unfortunate result of a hockey play that has happened countless times in countless games between 2 players without injury. You can see Rooney start to engage in the hit, but his timing and positioning compared to Miller's just had him in a more vulnerable position to be on the wrong end of it.
I fucking hated Vancouver and this turned my opinion all the way from a hatred to a love. Holy shit, dude lays a clean hit but its just bad circumstance and then not only keeps playing like he doesn't have a hit on his head but answers the call to diffuse the situation. I have the upmost respect for Miller now.
@@steve8803 lol if you don’t like the game of hockey don’t try to ruin it for the rest of us. Its was an unfortunate placed hit. Went into the boards akward. Not boarding. And you’re right he didn’t HAVE to fight. But he did like a man and held his own. And that was the end of it. You could learn a thing or two from him 🧻
dude you think the Calgary players are reviewing the play before deciding to defend their teammate? Its a fast game, you see your friend and teammate get absolutely leveled and motionless on the ice, you're going to go after the guy. It's a culture of sticking up for your teammate when you think (rightly or wrongly) there was a dirty play
Wasn’t a dirty hit. But all the backlash is a huge reason hockey is becoming so soft unfortunately. Genuinely hope he’s okay, but people need to calm down. It isn’t soccer practice, it’s the NHL.
Hate seeing guys get knocked out, always an uncomfortable feeling with how much we know now about the dangers of concussions. Hoping Rooney's ok and has a speedy recovery.
Teams aren't built like they used to be. You used to have two maybe three guys that would fight for the team. you'd also have a solid 5/6/7 others guys that would and could check and hit open ice. Game was much slower then too but lets not focus on that. Now when some one lays a big hit or boards someone anyone on the ice just grabs them and starts feeding them, well at least trying too. You have two types of hits in todays game, one is hitting just to hit. the other is hitting while traveling fast or open ice or close to the boards. It can sometimes appear viscous but it generally isnt. The reason these guys get grabbed is to try and deter them from hitting again. It is silly and just starts shit for no reason, esp if its clean. But it does help in a while as overall hit numbers are way down.
You know what good on Miller. Wasn't even his fault but Calgary just wouldn't leave em alone so he dropped em to settle it. Good old time hockey right there and this is exactly why fighting should still be apart of the sport.
I mean you got to remember all those players, for the most part, didn’t even see the hit. Just reacting to protect their teammate. I doubt any of them hold any grudge against miller after reviewing it
Clear boarding given position on ice. I don't know what to make of interference since Miller basically passes him the puck so he can continue through the check?
I like hockey and all but damn it only pops up when there fighting, dying or unconscious on my feed which is crazy. I just wanna see trick shots not all this chaos 😅
Glad Miller answered the call to fight even though he didn’t have to. It was an awkward situation where he had every right to reverse check to protect himself. Hope Rooney is all good
I think each sport has their own reasons. I can guess that the NBA is haunted by "The Malice in the Palace" incident. Hence why they strike down hard on altercations. MLB? They have their own 'unwritten rules' that usually relate to pitchers heaving at someone's head 😅. Hockey is its own animal for the most part.
Unfortunate that Rooney got hurt, but that was anything BUT a dirty hit. Why is it every time a guy gets hit, clean or not, the other team seems to feel the need to start punching people? Ridiculous. We're witnessing the pussification of the NHL.
Very true. even in the bloodbath bench clearing brawl era of the 1970’s, clean hits very rarely, if ever, elicited a response from the opposing player. only exceptions were if you’re hit was against one of the superstars. What i find way worse are players who now use the stick with a blatant cheap shot or run the goalie & then hide behind the refs while the opposing team doesn’t do jack. but a clean hit? The NHL has been destroyed by Bettman who has taken literally 95% of the physicality as well as the personalities completely out of the game.
@michaelcollins2473 It's dangerous to violently hit someone at that distance from the boards because the landing surely will be awkward. If he was closer to the boards then it's not problem. But at that distance you can easily break someone neck.
Что бы ты на такой чистый прием попал!!Огоньки молодцы,что встали за своего,это команда!!!А за тебя никто не встанет,да ты и сам не поднимешься со своего дивана!!!Хоккей ему мягкий стал))))
Are you talking about Rooney or JT? Because it's seems pretty obvious JT thought Rooney was going to take the pass, but then was surprised by him missing it and found himself on a collision course.
Miller definitely finished his check. Hope the concussion isn't as bad as it looks when Rooney's (at least helmeted) head smashed into the boards at high speed.
JT Miller landing on Rooney after the hit didn't help but I didn't see any intent, that's how miller plays, Mantha made him answer the bell for it later in the game. I pray for Rooney's safety.
I friggin' HATE when guys have to fight some lug because they made a clean hit that did not end well. Suck it up boys it is a contact sport! You watch all your pretty plays on your tablets on the bench, next time watch what happened on these hits! Retaliate with a clean hit when given the chance.
Clean hit..calm down boys. If players would stop trying to avoid the hit and meet them body to body shoulder to shoulder you would have less injuries. We used to learn how to take hits safely not avoid them.
Funny enough, that's exactly what Miller was doing, but he didn't have time to realise that Rooney wasn't coming to check him, was just about to collide (Rooney turned his head so late that the situation took him by surprise). An unfortunate and freaky event, nothing else.
i played since Timbits and played major from Bantam up until Jr. , there would always be a response to big hits like this regardless of it being clean or not, that's part of protecting your players, once you start taking penalties from retaliation then it becomes a problem, but a scrum resulting from a big hit has always been the norm as far back as i can remember.
Rooney has nobody to blame for that hit but himself. He left himself vulnerable and out of balance along the boards. Hopefully Rooney's ok and doesn't put himself in that position again. Hits are part of the game. Learn to avoid them or take them, and if you feel the need to retaliate, do so with a hard hit of your own.
That should have been a 2 minute boarding call. He really should have tried to avoid that collision. He hit him 5'-10' out from the boards, which is one of the most dangerous places to engage in contact. Rooney is lucky he wasn't more seriously injured. I don't think Miller intended it to be that bad. But that is something drilled into your head in minor hockey that you don't lay a hit in that spot on the ice.
When we were yang they teach us to keep our heads UP all the time.. now some one else is guilty for Rooney not protecting him self is the "new" hockey reality 😢
How did you expect Miller to magically change his motion since he ALSO got knocked off his feet when the hit occurred? Miller also staying with Rooney into boards is probably why this didn't end with a neck injury since Miller probably helped minimize. If not, stop the whiplash that would've happened. Rooney got caught puck watching and didn't keep his head up, it's completely different than RAMMING someone from behind into the boards where there's no way to know another player is coming.
@SevenCostanza Of course you can hit people. But if you knock them out there will be a response. The players on the ice don't have the ability to sit in their armchair and watch the replay from 10 different angles to determine what the appropriate response would be. All they know is their teammate got knocked out and is seriously injured and they want to attempt to deter this from happening again. You can rest assured that if Hughes was the recipient of the exact same hit, his teammates would react the same way.
Good job Miller, on all fronts. Man, Calgary has turned into a bunch of whiny babies. They're going to have a long rough season with attitudes like this.
I think it builds character for a team. It wasn't a dirty hit but it shows the flames are willing to stick up for each other which the team has been missing that the past few seasons. Now you see everyone get involved, and it must be working cause they one the game
One guy reached for the puck at the last second, and the other one thought he was about to get hit and braced for the impact. Just an unfortunate result that his back slammed into the boards so awkwardly.
he didnt "have" to fight. He also didnt "have" to hit Rooney. But if hes going to lay some hits hes going to become a target. and he did, would be the same for any team. Lay a big hit on someone and cause them to lay motionless on the ice and you expect the flames to have no retaliation ? guess we can tell what kind of team mate youd be,
@@ToxicIsTheNewOpTic it wasnt a big hit- it was a bad outcome because he was off balance and hit his head on the boards. Rooney isnt the only one with a head injury apparently.
@@artvandelay1967big hit or not doesn't change anything lmao. Apparently you can't read and just saw big hit and forget everything else but guess you right witht he head injury part, but weird flex to drag urself down like that bud
I remember a time when players didn’t fight over clean hits, but I guess those days are over. Maybe we do need enforcers back. It was a more gentlemanly game then.
This all goes back to there not being enough hitting in the ‘new’ NHL. If big body contact happened more often(like it always used to), players would learn to anticipate it and protect themselves. J.T. Miller is a passionate leader and everything an NHL player should be. And the league’s apparent decision to gradually screen out players in his mold will be its downfall.
If I was the flames player, specifically Number 94, Pancel or whatever his name is giving Rooney that horrible suicide pass and not blame Miller. If it wasn't for him, Rooney wouldn't of been in that play, people need to see what happen before the hit, what lead up to it.
This would have been a hard/predatory hit IF Rooney ever possessed the puck. However Miller actually received then continued to lay hit with no regard for volnerable position of player & resulted in injury. Dirty play from a dirty player.
Most people dont know that bottom yellow part of the boards is solid and has no give, whereas the white part has some spring. I'd bet that did the most damage here
Can we put a sock in it about our riot already? I'm a yearly 11 game ice pack holder of the team and am born and raised in Vancouver. Riot was going to happen had we won or lost I can tell you that much. It was a 'perfect storm' of events that led up to it. Like have there been no other cities out there that have had a sports riot win or lose? Boston 2008 after Celtics WON! Montreal in 1993 after they won. LA has had riots after lakers won and Detroit went ape$hit too after the Tigers won the world series!
I was at the game. Honestly I don’t think the fans realized he was hurt that badly they didn’t show it on the jumbotron and everyone was more focused on the fight. When they realized they gave him a standing O after.
Mantha is a goon. The hit was clean, but he felt he should instigate a fight anyway? I would suspend Mantha for at least one game, just so the message gets out that retaliation for a clean hit is unacceptable. What if Miller was injured during the fight? Does that mean the next time these teams meet, the benches clear? It's understandable when a dirty play results in a player's injury, players get emotional, I put on my first pair of skates in 1960. I think Ice Hockey is the greatest sport on earth but this is the Pros, they have to keep their emotions in check when no rules were broken. My take away from this event was that the rules committee needs to review their standards for helmets, a side impact should not automatically result in a concussion. Just my opinion, agree or disagree with me but I will not be responding to counterpoints. After all, "its just a game."

Curious outsider here - I see disagreements in the comments about whether or not the hit was legal, so I won't waste time posing that question. What I want to know is were any of the retaliating players penalised for the fighting? Other sports have introduced penalties to try to stop altercations from escalating into brawls (like penalising the 'third man in'). If a league is going to let people get into serious fights without any repercussions, you have to wonder if they see the drama of that fighting as a positive for attracting more attention to the sport? (I gotta admit, this is the first ice hockey video I've seen in a while, so it works.) In which case, it's a bit like a motor sport being deliberately lax on safety because crashes attract media coverage.

Hopefully he's okay though.
nice story but you are wrong

Those are the most scary hits....... you can easily break a neck falling awkwardly to the boards.
This was just a crazy game

This is a beautiful hit. This is hockey and I love it.
I have the upmost respect for Miller now.

clean hit. league is way too soft, you aren't even allowed to play hard hockey anymore
dirty hit the guy is supposed to have the puck
I once went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.
Why fight after a clean hit ?

5:47 Why can’t the referees in the NBA, MLB, NASCAR, and the NFL allow players to fight it out like NHL? Sports would be more fun to watch.
I think each sport has their own reasons. I can guess that the NBA is haunted by "The Malice in the Palace" incident. Hence why they strike down hard on altercations. MLB?

@VangeliRock It's the distance from the boards he was hit at that made him defenseless. If he was closer to the boards, I'd have no problem with it.
i played since Timbits and played major from Bantam up until Jr. , there would always be a response to big hits like this regardless of it being clean or not, that's part of protecting your players, once you start taking penalties from retaliation then it becomes a problem, but a scrum resulting from a big hit has always been the norm as far back as i can remember.
He was out. Miller will be hunted in Calgary again.
Seen a lot of issues like this where players just don’t prepare for these types of hits anymore
You are absolutely right

@@dimitarkonov6161 boarding has been around for a long time man idk what ur talking about w this new hockey
Geez you cant hit anyone anymore. Whats happening to this game.
Ballerinas now a daze
Two words ... Gary Bettman
Nice on the fans for cheering when he got up. Good to see

Scored a shorty for his troubles.
You know. 👏
Pachal I believe you’re referring to? Ya that was a suicide pass if I ever seen one.
So what your saying is the player was in a vulnerable position and Miller ran him through anyways.

They just ran into each other awkwardly, he shouldn't have to fight for that...
Clean hit
very cheap dirtbag hit
