Funny how there are these gurus out there preaching 5-6h sleep. You're not getting more stuff done with those extra 2 h if you're a zombie through out the day. Quality over quantity. It's not about how many hours you work, it's about how much you get done.
Get a cheap $30 Bluetooth speaker from Amazon. Download an atmospheric sound app, fall asleep to the sound of ocean waves and wind. Has never failed for me. Especially after a rigorous high volume session.
The Iron Matic haha Thanks man, but I don't really have trouble sleeping ( except for the occasional cracking open a cold one with the bois), but I guess I have to improve my micronutrientgame and activity throughout the day.
if you already sleep enough , wake up one the wrong sleep phase can make you feel more drowsy and tired. Maybe Look into an app sleep as androids.(I am not related to developer). and other point is quality of sleep. sleep apnea or anythings interrupt your sleep decease a lot of sleep quality.
I'm always tired. I find that charging my phone away from the bed helps me get to sleep faster. Otherwise I mindlessly browse my phone. Also, If you have an iPhone, you can use the night shift setting which reddens the screen.
Windows 10 has this feature called Night light in the display settings that reddens the screen as well. It will turn off automatically at 7am and turn back on at 9pm if you leave it on. So people could look for that too.
To fall asleep I just start thinking about riding my bike in a trail, I literally fall asleep thinking about that everyday and It works like a charm. I like to call It simulated dreaming, you think less with words and more with images, and you don't jump around ideas you imagine yourself in only one place. I have an alarm clock but I always wake up before It goes off, if the alarm clock wakes me up then I need to sleep earlier.
I've started taking a Zinc and Magnesium supplement before bed. This combined with going to bed at roughly the same time every night (8 hours sleep minimum) has really helped my sleep quality. 10/10 would recommend.
Mario Sanchez you're so right about the importance of zinc and magnesium. Most people don't get enough magnesium. The other trace mineral that most people are deficient in is iodine. Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. I was dragging my ass for months and not sleeping well either. Since starting the iodine supplement I actually feel normal again and I'm recovering so much better.
You say carbs as bro science, great bro science. I looked this up the other day. It's because your muscles will take the AAs for muscle glycogen and leave higher tryptophan concentration than normal, which can be converted through natural pathways as synthesis of melatonin from said tryptophan. That's why carbs are better than protein. Also, I swear by the blue light thing. Has helped me tremendously in the last couple years of grad school when it can be helped. Great advice as normal.
If I saw you and didn't know who you were, I'd think you just got out of jail for multiple murderers, assault & battery, grand larceny, & eating small babies.
My main thing that killed my tiredness like a few years ago was fixing how I slept. Like I researched it on how to properly sleep and tried it 1 night and instantly kepted with it for almost 2 years now. I can confinently say that I have never had a bad night's rest. Usually, it's 99% great night rests, and 1% ok night rest when life hits me. Not once have I had a bad night's rest like I did the many years before I fixed my sleep. Main thing is supporting the lower back, elevating the knees/top calves to remove pressure from legs, and supporting the neck for when you are advanced. I recommend doing your research and trying a proper rest for 1 night.
Nice! I work night shift and here's a few things I do: 1. Get blackout curtains that completely block out the light in your room... 2. Wear a QUALITY sleep mask (I got a nice one off of amazon).... 3. Wear earplugs if you're around noise or live next to a busy road... 4. Microdose melatonin - I take 300 mcg per night 5. If possible wear blue light blocking glasses (orange tinted glasses) 1-2 hours before you sleep... available on amazon for cheap. 6. 400mg magnesium glycinate before bed
I take a multi with magnesium in it (now foods ADAM brand) in addition to the supplemental magnesium. If you're taking your multis at night, watch out for vitamin D-3 because this can suppress melatonin production. D-3 is great, just not before bed time!
I dont know how to explain this but Alex is like my subconsious secretly telling me the shit im doing wrong. You were so right about sitting all day makes you tired and lazy god most of the days I don't even feel like working out because im so sedentary.
The audio book advice is something that really works. I figured it out not too recently myself. If you do it a lot, it is kinda like a Pavlov response. Your brains just knows "I guess it's time to sleep". I fall asleep within 15 min everyday as soon as I hit the bed and listen to certain podcasts/audiobook/youtubers. I used to have insomnia for years, this is better then medicine to me
I'm not even a lifter but Alex's advice is beneficial for anybody in general. He nailed it with his advice on time wasting and pretty much everything else!
I'm not complaining or anything, I really enjoy smoothies before bed. But recently as I've been switching towards a more plant based diet ive been doing a lot of research and experimenting with the bowl transit time of foods. Fruit goes through very quick ... so it is actually optimal to have fruit at the start of the day. If you consume fruit after protein-rich and starchy foods it tends to get backed up and start to ferment in the colon. Just my thoughts, have a test :)
I was literally a zombie. I literally didn’t do anything except go to work and come home and sit around until tomorrow. How I fixed this was: 1. Quit caffeine completely 2. Quit all processed/added sugar 3. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every night even on weekends. Sleep 8 hours a night. Turn off all screens an hour before going to sleep. That’s pretty much it. Eat good sleep good. Caffeine DESTROYS your sleep without you necessarily knowing it. You may be asleep but you’re not in REM sleep. This is a good video, Alpha. Keep it up
What you said about sitting in my ass at night time playing video games hit home man. Damn, im a pretty active guy but at night time I do play a lot online. And i didn't know that the blue light it creates fucks up my sleeping. That's actually good to know because for a while now im having trouble because i actually do have insomnia and it's really annoying because sleeping is hard for me. Really good tips down here Alex, I appreciate it!
Wearing blue light blocking glasses is another great way to eliminate blue light in the evening besides using f.lux & simply abstaining from blue light. I personally really like Swanwick's, they really come in handy when doing late-night work on my pc. Great video Alex! Gonna start moving my body a little after every pomodoro session from now on.
Please dont stop makin videos alex, u actually put effort into researching and making sure your vids are nothing but facts. They've helped me alot thank you
The problem I have is the bullshit time wasting (video games specifically). I come home from working 9 hours and since all I want to do is relax, I play vid games for 90-120 mins then hit the gym. then after that ill stay up too late (12-1am) playing MORE video games. I gotta stop, and this video helps me remember that. I'm gonna really make an effort next week. Thanks Alex
I hear ya bro. I recommend you keep the games in (if needed) BUT when you get back from the gym don't go back on it. Instead, read a book or listen to an audiobook. Unwind yourself, and you'll fall asleep before 12-1 guaranteed
This video couldn't come at a better time. My first year of college is all online so i'm sleeping super late and waking up super late. Thanks for helping me get my sleep back on track Alex
I noticed that camping for a week, I slept amazing (resets the body clock). Asleep around 8-9pm, up at 5am refreshed. So I started 'camping at home' sometimes. No electrical lighting, just candles (I used battery operated which have a remote control haha). I also cut back on phone time from 6pm, listen music and will only read books or open the windows and just listen to the world outside before bed. I always find something to do with the time offline. It all leads to a peaceful sleep and waking around 5am.. Ready to hit the gym, while everyone is still asleep :D
Raising two kids is basically leg day every day in a mental sense. A miracle I've stuck to training the past few years. Holding out for when kids are a little older and don't require as much care. I average 5 hours most nights, but try to nap a couple hours after they go to school/nursery if I can. 19% bodyfat, aiming to enter intermediate phase in coming months after two years of lockdown related training disruption. Great content 👌
Good shit homie. Melatonin is a staple of my regiment. Plus, I try to hit my micros by 5pm. Basketball for 2hrs daily, weather permitting. one last thing. I wear shades when I'm working long hours on my computer
For anyone struggling to sleep, I like to put some earphones in and listen to sleep sounds on youtube, rain on a tent, blizzards, crackling fireplaces ect, really helps!
God bless you. We need more of this straight, honest talk in society. None of this bureaucratic, politically correct bullshit that complicates shit for no reason.
8-10 servings of fruits and vegetables?!? This is madness Alex. Excellent video though, really really good advice. F.lux for PC and Twilight for Android are lifechangers, I can only recommend everyone to get those. You get used to the red screen pretty fast.
Yeah man, it's CRAZY how fast you adapt. Sometimes I've edited videos with color correction without even realizing that my screen was completely red. The shit works real good
Endorphin release on activities. Do cardio in the morning and you have energy all day and an elevated mood. Superheavy strength training and burning yourself out is not ideal in the morning I've noticed, you feel crap for about 2-4 hours but can
You said that being inactive or lazyness causes you to be tired. What productive things should one fill ones day with? I already do the basics, but I feel I still have a lot of time left over. Study/research, exercise/lift, meditate(havent done that in some time), go for walks, and socialize. What else is there? Should I spend more time reading? I feel i have too much free time, where i spend it being toxic online, and people being toxic back to me. It's a negative cycle.
It comes down to having a dream, or serious purpose in life. Once you know what you really want, the productive activities will automatically fall into place. I spend most of my free time reading and studying for example.
One thing that helps me fall asleep is counting sheep. It seems dumb, but if you clear your mind and really concentrate on counting a bunch of sheep slowly and nothing else, it can really help you fall asleep.
The cellphone video game blue light shit is real. No joke. I been putting my shit down at like 9-10 and it helps me get out by 12. I use to not fall asleep til 2 all the time. I get my 7-8 hours a night and it's made me much better physically.
Funny , I was falling asleep from watching this video, not cause the vid is boring but sometimes I just fall asleep from watching videos. I get so tired I just put my phone down and slump
This is so true.. After a long uni day I feel kinda less energetic than on a regular week day, but the least energy I have, when I wasted a day on the couch, like it seriously takes an hour of movement until I actually feel like doing something..
i cant have any type of milk so smoothies will mess up my belly so that will mess up my sleep anyway. that treadmill while working in a office is a classic line!
Wasn't there a study done that proved limited sleep of the 5:30 or 6 hr variety has almost 0 difference in muscle growth compared to a 7-8 hour sleep . I mean your absolutely right about getting enough sleep that your not a zombie , but I find a good clean diet and a lot of hydration does the trick . For those people who have kids, run business's not to mention other important things it really isn't feasible to get 8 hours . Anyways your the man Alex , keep preaching
I hope this video helps those that are constantly feeling tired. I calibrated this segment for lifters, so certain causes + solutions may not be listed. Kevin Blank Then just listen to the wind instead! Or keep the volume setting on the ocean sound file down lol.
The Iron Matic haha Thanks man, but I don't really have trouble sleeping ( except for the occasional cracking open a cold one with the bois), but I guess I have to improve my micronutrientgame and activity throughout the day.
Sleep 8 hours and tired. I guess I wake up during the night all the time for no reason though; school stress is my guess.
School stress is definitely a major factor
if you already sleep enough , wake up one the wrong sleep phase can make you feel more drowsy and tired. Maybe Look into an app sleep as androids.(I am not related to developer).

Mario Sanchez I take four drops of a 2% Lugol's iodine solution in a bit of water every morning.
You should make a video on mental blocks & how to "unblock" that, keep up the good work man your videos are the best
Never thought of it that way. .the average guy doesn't lift, so I would need more rest then them.

f.lux is amazing been using it for almost a decade. Always feels weird using a screen without it at night. Prevents your eyes hurting at night.

True story bro. Definitely feel more energized now I go to school again and walking a lot. Always feel tired during holidays
I'm not even a lifter but Alex's advice is beneficial for anybody in general. He nailed it with his advice on time wasting and pretty much everything else!
Listening to Binaural beats along with eating a good amount of carbs and reducing caffeine is what cured my insomnia
Hands down best channel for ALL types of advice for lifters
I'm not complaining or anything, I really enjoy smoothies before bed. But recently as I've been switching towards a more plant based diet ive been doing a lot of research and experimenting with the bowl transit time of foods. Fruit goes through very quick ... so it is actually optimal to have fruit at the start of the day. If you consume fruit after protein-rich and starchy foods it tends to get backed up and start to ferment in the colon. Just my thoughts, have a test :)
I was literally a zombie. I literally didn’t do anything except go to work and come home and sit around until tomorrow.
How I fixed this was:
1. Quit caffeine completely
2. Quit all processed/added sugar
Keep it up

Just what I needed, I wasn't really sleeping a whole lot these past few weeks.
This is truth, absolutely about computers and cell phones.
I need sleep now but have to watch this first.
I noticed that camping for a week, I slept amazing (resets the body clock). Asleep around 8-9pm, up at 5am refreshed. So I started 'camping at home' sometimes. That thumbnail Freaked Me Out for a second !
Absolutely you gotta make more videos like this
thank you so much for this video alex
Wasn't there a study done that proved limited sleep of the 5:30 or 6 hr variety has almost 0 difference in muscle growth compared to a 7-8 hour sleep . I mean your absolutely right about getting enough sleep that your not a zombie , but I find a good clean diet and a lot of hydration does the trick . For those people who have kids, run business's not to mention other important things it really isn't feasible to get 8 hours . Anyways your the man Alex , keep preaching
