      Are these lightfast and have you tested the claims for permanence? I know you have done Derwent InkTense paintings but will they stand the test of time? (I did a painting with Sennielier Oil pastels and hung it outside, in the elements but protected by an overhang...After 2.5 years of every weather imaginable, the colors and painting itself are amazingly still like I did it yesterday...Watercolors would not withstand this test but I wonder how InkTense would do)

      I have paintings done with cotman watercolor almost 2 years ago that live on my very bright sun porch and they have never faded. Of course I picked lightfast colors to paint them with lol....... After the watercolor pencils I was waiting for a pan set! And I wasn't disappointed 😁

    I actually paint with my travel kit in the car! To solve the water issue I carry extra water brushes and an small old acrylic bottle of water and they all fit in a pencil box from the dollar store. Loves how excited you were, I was jealous. We are expecting 9" of snow on top of rain and ice.

    I am SO so so glad you had this experience, I had the same realization a while ago and I feel everything happens for a reason, this was nature calling u to come back and look at your roots, nature is an amazing source of inspiration and peace. words cannot describe the serenity an artists feels when she/he is working outdoors, it's no longer work. awesome! def want to try out this product.

    I don't go paint outside either. I tried in the past and I liked it but the only problem is people. I don't like how they watch me sketch, it makes me nervous. I'd love to do it more often because it is fun. I have to find a nice, quiet spot ;). Loved your painting, Lisa and also the place you went to.

      So true, I don’t like being watched either. It’s distracting. It’s natural though, for people to be curious. I think non-artistic types are fascinated with artists, it’s like we are doing something magical. I’d never set up in a busy area, where there are a lot of people!

    Now, Lisa . . . You have found the next step to unleashing your creativity. I am so excited that you have moved from the comfort of your studio to the great world of the REAL. It is so great that you have made the move and DO keep it up. I know it is a job to video these adventures, but we all would find it a pleasure to go on these trips with you. Working from nature (out in nature) is such a great experience that cannot be duplicated even with the greatest reference photo. You are painting what you see and feel, and not what the camera has seen in a fraction of a second. Now, for you and others in the group, You may want to check out the work of Stefan Baumann from "The Grand View" . He loves and shares his love of working in nature. His videos do not show you how to put the paint on the canvas, but his videos teach why you put the paint on the canvas. Lisa, you have done great, please do continue to 'go outside' and share those experiences with us.

  • @MayBrox

    I got mine yesterday, and so far I like it very much. Mostly because of the space it actually has. And that it have the little sponge, that I can clean my tip off on, instead of taking a piece of towel or tissue paper with me. If I want to add more pans with other brands or colors, i can do that too. Only negative thing for me, is that i think the mixing areas isn't deep enough. But I can mix in the chamber where the brush is supposed to be. So I worked that out too.
    This set, has the best set-up off all my traveling set's. Just because it actually fit everything I need with me "on-the-go".

    Great video Lisa! 😁 Yay you liked getting out & painting too. Hubby & I do this every Sunday now. Back in August of last year I told him I need to get out of the house, why don't we try this. So we went to breakfast & then sat for hours sipping coffee & painting/sketching. I think we have only missed doing this like 4 times now since then. If I can help it nothing gets scheduled for sundays. It is so fun & relaxing! From 730am-2pm we are unavailable... except for the kids. 😉 In fact, when my younger step daughter is here with us she goes too & loves it. She's turning 17 and loves that dad & Val hangs out at the coffee cafe painting... she has her own set up I made for her. Just wait until you try wc in pans... you will love this even more! I will say, the creek made me miss living there. I'm sure it's gorgeous there when it's time for the lightening bugs. TFS! 🤗

This was really great Lisa and you know I think this summer I'm going to be outside of my house a little bit more to painting on my patio. Thanks for sharing and I'm not one of those people that really like to go outside cuz it's hot and bugs but I do love love love birds and nature and the trees so I'll probably do it early in the morning. I think now with the versatility of compact things and how you can adapt so many things plein air has become more achievable to do and enjoyable, when the weather and surroundings are so nice, it can be the best place for inspiration. Thanks for the review and video, I’m inspired now to grab this and enjoy plein air artwork. Travel sets are my entire life, and I spend a lot of time coming up with super compact kits PRECISELY for the reasons you said in the beginning (big, annoying, wind, etc) but for the sake of the joy that you found at the end....that’s why I do my best to design compact but super usable kits. Painting “out in the wild” often helps re-center me when I’m feeling a bit rough around the edges and I’m glad you’re now joining the ranks of us UA-camrs who occasionally leave the studio and just find joy in scribbling while oot and aboot. =^.^= hope your future adventures are even more exciting for you!
    Oh, and it may be worth it to you to set up a permanent travel kit that just always lives in your bag no matter what, so you can keep a small sealed bottle of water or water flask in your purse, and a spare tripod in there so you’re always ready to just doodle when needed.

    A little bottle that drink flavor enhancer comes in (like mio or oil aid) is perfect for filling the waterbrushes and can fill one about 3 times. I love painting outside and do as often as I can especially from a canoe or kayak so I can get a new perspective. I am so jealous of your summery weather! Congratulations LIsa!! I’m so glad that you stepped outside of your comfort zone. I am very curious about their new set. It looks similar to my old Sakura Koi set. It was my first watercolor paint set. I’ve used it on trips to Brookside Gardens, but I’ve always wanted to take a portable version of my Derwent intense pencils (my blocks stay in my studio) on my hikes. I’m planning my first photo/art hike for next week and believe me, even with a check list, I always leave something behind. I’ve started packing extra water, paper towels, bug repellant, etc... in the back of my car for emergencies!! Enjoy! 👍🏾

    I had a brand new set, a big set, cost about $300, of Ludwig soft pastels, which are rectangular shaped and very fragile....was using one of those wood easels with the attached paint box, name is escaping me - anyway, it was windy, and at some point when my back was turned, a huge gust blew over my whole set up....one third of the pastels shattered when they hit the ground. I’m not kidding when I say I sat down and cried. That being said, it’s a valuable thing for artists, to work outdoors, from life, and natural light. I don’t do it as much as I should, but when I do, I use watercolor and keep things minimal, a small palette, water, a few brushes and a small WC block. I want to buy the Portable Painter palette, it’s great for outdoor painting.

    Enjoyed seeing that new product. You mentioned that you wish that white was included. You might want to take a piece of white Inktense block and use sticky tack to fix it into the little brush space. I always have a piece of sepia and a piece of Payne's Gray stuck inside my little watercolor tine, so that I can do ink "underpainting" and glaze over the top with watercolor. Also, for painting outside, I use a collapsible silicone cupcake pan liner thingie, or a collapsible silicone drinking cup (try American Science & Surplus for a really neat one.)

    Plein air is awesome... I'm so jealous of how you nailed the filmography on your first time out! I'm in the middle of editing my first video in ages (thinking its USP was being outside 😂) and it is going to be nowhere near as polished as this. I really need to work on my filming skills... But at least now I've got my first one filmed and partially edited I have a better idea of what b-roll would have been helpful.
    I know you've said in the past though that learning you tube is like learning art, you just need to push through the rubbish videos to get better. It is more important to start than to get that first video perfect. It's still hard to put it out there when my taste in videos is far beyond my filming and editing skills though!
    The inktense set looks great. I'm so glad you've discovered you can enjoy doing art outside. It can be challenging but it feels good.

    Love your vids Lisa! Which do you feel are easier to use - the Inktense pencils or blocks for beginners? I mainly work in acrylics and am used to being able to paint over very easily. I know inktense are similar. Does the white block cancel out the ink below it so you can start over with lighter colors? I have 12 blocks but am considering investing in more pencils or blocks. If you have a large background, you need to lay down dry color over the entire area so that you can get an even blend, is that right because the colors dry so fast? I think I have been struggling with this the most. Any tips or a vid on best ways to use inktense would awesome! Thanks so much!

    Hi Lisa! Love you and your art. I am a beginner, and have only 12 polychromos. I have 72 set of prismacolors too, after seeing your and other artists'videos, I know they are not good. How can I use my 12 polychromos?

    Hi :-) Question for you or anyone if time permits... Wondering how this is different from any other set which includes room for a pen? W&N has a seriously nice travel set which includes it's own water bottle so... tell me about the paints please!
    Btw, your video is the very time I've ever wanted to try playing with paint outside, so thanks very much for that! The person who said Derwent should advertise in hiking magazines was spot on, lol.

    Oh envy, everything is already so green where you are!
    I like Inktense, but really, "bulk-wise" for going outdoors, there is not much difference to watercolours. I know you don't paint with watercolours, but it puzzles me a little. There really isn't any difference between how you use either medium.

      I feel so bad for those of you with snow still! That would not be ideal weather for this project haha!
      As for watercolor vs inktense, there is a difference in how watercolor and inktense each react to being layered. I will be doing a video comparing inktense to watercolor pencils soon, but it honestly just comes down to personal preference.

    • @pswagner
      @pswagner 6 років тому +3

      Hi, Inktense works much as watercolors do, and I agree that the Derwent Travel set is very similar to any travel watercolor set like Cotman etc. but in terms of what happens when Inktense dries, the two are very different. Intense does not lift off page or dissolve once dried, being ink not watercolor and this makes technique a bit different, since what you paint becomes permanent, and the end result while "watercolorish" also reflects this. I prefer Derwent inktense to watercolors because of this ink-like permanence.

    • @corvuscorone7735
      @corvuscorone7735 6 років тому +1

      Yes, thank you :) I know, I use both. But I don't find that the lifting off of colours of the page is a real problem with watercolours, either, you *can* lift off a certain amount of pigment, but if you don't want that to happen, you can still layer beautifully, you just have to work fast and not keep brushing the same spot with the brush, and let everything dry well in between layers. And not use too much pigment at once. So, to me, the technique is key here. I have been painting with watercolors for over 30 years now, and dissolving underlying layers has never been a problem to me.
      Inktense are awesome, absolutely, I was just amused (in a good way) that Lisa enjoyed the experience (outdoors, with very little to carry along) so much, when she could have had it with watercolours all along.
      Does anyone know if they worked on the lightfastness of the Inktense?
