  • In this painting tutorial I show you how to obtain delicate colors with Inktense Pencils. These wonderfully vibrant pencils are made by Derwent and have strong, bold colours, but you can still achieve delicate shades and tones and in this video I will show you how. I will show you how to paint this pansy with easy to follow steps so even if you are new to painting, you can follow along - we even provide you with a reference photograph and trace down drawing. So if you want to paint Botanical art with Inktense Pencils, then take a look.
Derwent Inktense Pencils can be purchased individually as well as different sized sets.

Stunning! Instead of swatching on paper and wasting pigment, one could get a Caran D'ache palette that has a rough and smooth side, and scribble the pencil on it. It is only $8.

Absolutely incredible skills. I've had a box of Inktense pencils for around two decades and I've never even opened them. I just thought that they were like a flat gouache nothing like you have produced.
I'm so chuffed that I stumbled across your video and you've made an old man very happy. I've just finished a pen and ink drawing for our kitchen... Guess what I'm going to use instead of my array of watercolour paints. I'm fare excited now, your video has made my weekend.
I always thought that once the Inktense has been wet and dried it was permanent, but they're more flexible and can be adapted slightly! Thank you so much for your video I usually skip through UA-cam videos but yours I've watched every second of it and enjoyed watching immensely. I have given it the BIG THUMBS UP. Take care 👍😷👍

This is beautiful. I painted a blue ginger flower using this method with my Inktense a few weeks ago. It came out beautiful. It is so important to build up these layers little by little to get the subtle undertones. It was a long process and took a bit of patience. @@helencampbell hi Helen well I spent several plus hours with my little pansy and my watercolour pencils. I must admit it was not as easy as you make it out to be. I found it particularly difficult to blend the black to grey either having too much or not enough water and because you skipped bits I was so busy working I missed what else you were doing so probably ended up watching you 3-4 times ha ha. Getting that pale pink wash at the start. Of course it took me a while to go "hey it doesnt have to be exactly the same as Helens pansy they come in all colours"..then when it was dry I touched it up with some watercolour paint rather than continuing with the pencils, thank goodness for white gauche too. Then touched it up again with coloured pencils later. I am happy with the end result. If anything I would say to people not to stress and overwork it...relax and do your own thing...hand drawing the pansy was the easiest bit. Next time I will do the whole thing with watercolour paints and another in coloured pencils and compare them. Thank for the great workout Helen. I look forward to watching more of your work.
