Great review!!! In my opinion; you absolutely, 100 percent make the best art supply reviews here on youtube...so thank you for that!! Thank you for sharing, much love♥️
Wow, thank you!
I agree!
Absolutely agree!
A year later and I still agree!
Always thorough reviews.
Agreed! I've been watching her since I was 16 and I'm 23 now, soooo 7 years so far!!❤
I'm a beginner, and this was my first student/professional grade pallette. I really like it (not that I have anything to compare it to!)
Also I totally agree that the paint is moveable but staining. I was actually happy about that.
Nice! Well since you, asked maybe someday I’d be interested in getting these but for now I’m happy with my supplies. I’ve vowed to use what I have before buying anymore.
Good review. Might get in the future, just got some Derwent color pencils. would be interested in seeing a project you do with fabric!
I have some of the inktense pencils and love them, but I have so many art supplies I do not need to buy anything else. I prefer concentrating on using them more. I can't say it's easy, as I like to collect art supplies, but it's gotten to a point where I am feeling so overwhelmed, I rarely create anymore.
Yeah, that's me too.
When that happens is best to pull back from buying. Make a limited supply kit and work from that and add to it from your stash once you exhaust your ideas.
I just bought this set. I have pencils and blocks. I really like it.
Are you worried about lightfastness
Watching this 3 years after the review and I didn’t realize theses are lightfast. I just learned so much from your review thank you I will be buying myself a set of these ❤
Enjoy!
Thanks so much for thos review. I recieved the 72 set of inktense from my husband when they first come out. Since then they remain my favorite watercolor type pencil and have replace a few of them open stock since. These will be the perfect additions to my inkense collection and I was lucky enough to pick up both sets of 12 in the nick of time before they sold out at blicks. I am pleased as punch and am so anxious to use them. Always a huge fan of your videos! Thanks again
"Just like a peacock with intense colors, the intense pencils or pans are so beautiful in deep rich colors."colors."-Lynn
Awesome Lindsay.🌹
Fantastic video, Lindsay! I have the blocks and I haven't used them yet. We packed them up to move, but I still can't find them lol. I know they're here. A lot of information which I'm thankful for. Thank you so much.
These are very tempting - and so are the pencils! I have the blocks and use them for atr quilt/thread sketching mostly. The vibrancy is amazing on canvas and linen, I've done a barrel bag that I've used and washed and it is still bright and vibrant. BUT I never thought about lightfast - on the other hade if these things are around after I'm gone they will be considered "age" and a little fading may be a good thing lol. I will pay attention to using more threads to enhance my artwork. Your use of watercolors with pencils or markers over it to finalize details always inspires my intense/thread sketching work. I find I learn so much more from those artists like you who work in mixed media and many techniques translate well into fiber art. My next attempt is going to be geli plate printing on fabric! I have the supplies to make my own from your old video on that because I want to do either 10X10 or 12x12 and those plates get a little pricy when I'm not sure if I'm going to really dig in or it will be another medium I'll test out and find it's not my cup of tea!
You inspired me. I love inktense pencils (my fav water-activated pencils) and now I have the paints. I liked the result so much I changed my avatar to my peacock. I would not have tried this complicated face had it not been for your video. THANK YOU.
Awesome!
Your small paintings and tea sheets turned out so so beautiful Lindsay! Gorgeous landscape sunset painting. Your are so amazingly talented!🤩 Wonderful review!
That was supposed to be test sheets 😝
Just to let y'all know if you purchased the two 12 pan sets. Set 1 and 2 have the same colors that this set has so don't buy both thinking your getting more colors. I checked the color list and compared on Amazon since I got the two 12 sets right when they came out....Enjoy everything this young lady does. keep it up. I am a true fan.
I got into inktense after COVID lockdown and I just love them. I bought a little travel box(metal) and put 20 of my favorite pans in plus one of neutral tint watercolor. These little boxes hold 21 of the small half pans that come with the ingredients. But I don’t want something quite so big to fit in my little travel bag and this works perfectly. There were a few colors I found I never use as much as in some reds and one green I think. I take it everywhere with a few travel brushes and a hot pressed and a cold pressed sketchbook. They react quite differently on the two papers and I find them a little more permanent on the hot pressed.
Thank you for your review it was fun.
I have both travel sets, the pencils and the blocks- yes, I have FSS! I put extra empty half pans in the travel sets and cut off chunks of the blocks to fill them with extra colors for travel to increase my color range.
That's a Great idea!
It was interesting when you mention the background layer can be blocked, but I am not sure if I want these, maybe next year I'll consider it. Definitely some day I'll get the graphitint pencils, those seem gorgeous.
If memory serves (not used my Inktense palette in an AGE as not been travelling!) that plastic makes water bead up anyway, so if the staining concerns you, a quick, thin coat of PTFE Dry Lubricant Spray (from electrical retailer or hardware store - dries in 5 mins) won’t change the beading up but will stop the staining. Re-do every 6-8 weeks.
I had been thinking recently about you cause we haven't seen anything from you in awhile. Hope you r doing well.

Redue huh
Looks very interesting. I need to get better with my watercolor before I add another medium.
Excellent information. I’m excited about new colors. Hopefully, they’ll eventually make those colors in the pencil form but, if not, I’ll pick up some open stock pans. Thank you for your informative reviews - you cover all the bases!
Have the blocks and pencils, so of course I had to order these! But seriously, these are a nice combo of watercolor and gouache.
You are correct: the first set got re-done with different colours.
Thanks, I was beginning to think I was losing my mind LOL!
Thank you so much Lindsay. I have just ordered the 24 paint set and the 12 pastel set. After watching your reviews on this subject. I think you are the most knowledgeable and thorough person who does these. I can only imagine how much work goes into making a video. Just wanted to say how grateful I am for all your help.
And I wish you and all your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
Thanks so much!
These are definitely my cup of tea. I love the vivid colours and ease of use. Finding a good price for art supplies in Canada is the goal.
Hi Lindsay, I have debated about whether I should get any inktense products or not, over the past few years. I've heard many people complain that they aren't as permanent as advertised...So, that's very interesting info regarding wetting the paper first.. Thanks!
I love Derwent. I have all the intense pencils and the first travel set. I've had it for a long time. I'm very interested in the white!
Yay! Thank you! I have a set I haven't used yet. Heading to your other videos!
Great review - I would be really interested in seeing your art quilting, as it's something I've not heard of before. My mother used to quilt and I inherited her quilting materials - but have never really been into quilting, so maybe it could be a new avenue for me to try.
Thanks
Best reviews - always! Thanks
Thanks for the time you took to experiment and give us your tips!!!! Saves my meek and quiet spirit from eruptions! :)
I love Inktense!
I'd love to see some of your art quilts! I've got the inktense blocks and pencils so I'm set there but I enjoyed your review!
I got one of the smaller inktense palettes in an art subscription box ages ago, and I never really gave it the attention that it deserved. This is really inspiring me, Thank you Lindsay!
Enjoy! I like them!
Really good review, thank you! Particularly appreciate the tip on wetting the watercolor paper for permanence. Had the blocks and pencils for years and didn't know that! 😊
Thanks Lindsay for sharing your review on the inktence, enjoyed this video stay safe
Enjoy your videos! Good information on this one. I don’t use them but I can relay the information to my students. Thanks
The SUPER diluted painting is gorgeous!!! - Might be how I want to play with my inktense now
Very informative. Thanks for the tip on paper wetting. I’m going to find the butterfly tutorial. 🥰
I bought an inktense travel palette a few months ago and I love the intensity of the colours but definitely need to play with it more and try diluting to get some more subtle colours.
You inspire me with those cute cards.
I am going to try to get these for sure. I have the 36 set of pencils and I considered getting the blocks for more even washes. However, for the price of these I think this is a way better deal. Thanks for doing the review, I am definitely going to look into these as I love the pencils.
Thanks Lindsay. Ivwas surprised it was movable. Not what I was looking for. Love the pencils though. I just scribble them on unsealed ceramic and add water. Somehow this works better for me.🙃💜
Love inktense! Have the pencils and the first travel set of pans and have been planning to eventually to get the second set of pans. Also love the fact that they will work well will the derwent lightfast pencils! Another great Lindsay review! Thank you!
Great review. I love that you share your experience. I always learn something! THANK YOU
Always such a thorough review. Thank you.
Sounds absolutely perfect for painting fabric! After searching in vain for any sort of half-baked "promise" of colorfastness, I was about to give up hope on using watercolors until now. Derwent is a rock solid trustable company, so thanks for the info. Have already ordered my Inktense set! BTW, any videos on painting on various fabrics in the future? Hope so!
Yes, I am working on one:)
No one more deserving of a promo set!
aww, thanks, I was quite surprised to get these!
I like my Inktense pencils, but will leave it there for this product. It looks nice; I’m sure those who get it will enjoy!
Great review! I have been thinking of getting these for a while and now I have found them for a decent price in Canada so they are on order. Thank you for doing these reviews.
Great info Lindsay, many thanks. 🥰🇬🇧
I picked up a set of these and a set of 12 Graphitint a few days ago and I love them! Both sets came with the water brush and both have lids..
Thank you for your review and hints using inktense~
After seeing this, I got the pans and really like them. Thank you!
Im glad!
I have tried to use water brushes, but ugh. I love a good real watercolor brush too 🌷🌷🌷
I love your reviews sooo much!!! Thank you!
I have been debating whether to buy the Inktense paint pans or the full tin of 72 blocks since watching this after it first came out. I took the plunge today and ordered the tin of 72. I may buy the pan set later :) so that I can easily choose to work non-lightfast or lightfast depending on the project.
Hi Lindsay ... some time back when I was reordering one of my Inktense blocks, I noticed there was a Turquoise Block. Sure wish they also made a pencil as welll ... at any rate the Turquoise pan isn’t new as a color for the range.
I didnt realize that, I thought they were the same. Thanks for letting me know!
I have the blocks and the pencils! Need to start and use them!
I've been waiiting for Derwent to do this. I gotta get my set
I have seen ink painting on silk dry and wet. Amazing 😁
Thank you for this wonderful review!
I am a little confused by the name. They are calling it a "studio" set. Usually when something has the word "studio" it means it is a student grade product. This set doesn't seem student grade, since they have gone to great lengths to make it mostly lightfast. I wonder if they are just suggesting it should be used in one's studio, rather than plein air? Or are they saying it is intended for students...?
the travel sets of 12 are meant to take on the go and the studio set it meant to stay in the studio, weird huh?
I don't have this set, but they look so nice in the palette - also I like the layout a lot and the removable trays. If the paints were ever to be used up, it would be a great one to be refilled. I also wonder, if full pans (maybe the ones by White Nights?) would fit in the area for the brush...
Thanks for the awesome review. I love that you take your time and throroughly test the paints before you form an opinion.
Gotta try😍😍..love inktense..TFS🤗
I like their pencils, curious to try this new set 🎨
Love this!
These seem great I hope to get them perhaps I’ll ask for my birthday!
I didn’t even know these were a thing!! Just bought the pencils for the first time this week!
You are going to love them!
Awww you’ve got awesome colour videos!
Derwent is a great brand! They are well known for their pencils.
Quick tip..if you push the pan from the back, it pops right out! ❤️
Great tip!
If you hover over/click on the colour blocks on the product page it will give you the lightfastness rating, along with the colour name. I really love Derwent products. I don't think there's anything of theirs I don't have. :D
I actually chunked up my Inktense blocks into watercolour pans and put them into a palette.
I have the pencils and I bought this too..I am curious..loved your video 😊
Update: Thank you for your help! I got in contact with Blick and they are able to send me the missing Payne's Grey. Hurray! Also painted 2 small postcards. I feel good today! 🧜♀️
Edit: Hm, I got 2 natural brown instead of a Payne's grey. Do I contact Blick or Derwent for that? Sorry for asking that here, I've never gotten a wrong color in a set before.
Yay! Great review. I bought these and the graphitint set (although the graphitints are on back order. ;-; ) My 24 set came with a capped water brush. Maybe they changed it after people asked about it? I haven’t gotten around to painting with these yet. >.> Shame on me! I know! This video was the kick in the rear I needed to finally unpack the beautiful palette. :) Thank you Lindsay!
I think either place will help you out, I emailed Derwent because I had a bad pencil in my lightfast set purchased off amazon and they sent me out the replacement , take a photo of the set with the dupe and they should send you out the missing pan.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you! I will contact Blick then. XD Derwent is so far away in Britain.
I got a mixup with my graphitint set. I contacted the shop I bought them from who got straight on to derwent and they sent me a replacement.
@@dees3179 That's good to know thank you! I live chatted on Blick's website and they are able to send me the missing Payne's Grey. :)
I want it, only for under paintings though. I’m not sure it’s my cup of tea, but I think it might be. I know water soluble pencils are not my cup of tea. I have the full set of pencils and never ever use them. I’ve kind of kicked myself ever sense for not getting the blocks.
I cut the blocks (2 pieces) that perfectly snugly fit into a half pan!
Thank you Lindsay. At timestamp 12:11 you mentioned a tutorial for the butterfly piece. Is that available to view? Is so, where could one find it? Love the peacock!
here you go: ua-cam.com/video/RVvBXOu0pZM/v-deo.html
Great review. I like that they're generally lightfast. Very vibrant also. Thanks for the review.
I love this palettes design💕 i prefer paints arranged in lesser "rows". Its like memorizing 2 sentences when each one has their own row, instead of them being congested into 4 rows?? Sorry if that sounds confusing😅
Also, the longer profile allows to place longer brushes or more stuff like pencils, pens, or even rulers👍
i have a small set of derwent intense pencils, i found the same 'movement" or lifting once dry that you showed with the pans. In most cases, if i wet the color after one light layer and make sure it all dissolves, it won't lift later. This means to get a dark color i had to do several layers, wetting after each layer, which is a bit inconvenient.
I bought this a few months ago online they were on sale I forget where. I love them so much 😁 the smaller set was my 1st set of watercolors 2 years ago. Also my waterbrush came with a cap, weird.
I've been debating between these and the graphitint pans, but haven't bought either yet. I have so many paints already that it is hard to justify buying more.
You can get them open stock. Just get a couple of pans. Keep the buying gremlin at bay🤓
I really want to like Inktense but everytime I use them I hate the finished look. It's chalky, like white was added to the pigments. A friend mentioned to use Inktense with Gum Arabic to make the colours glow but I haven't tried it yet.
It makes them very easy to scan and photograph though, a bit like gouache. Excellent for design and reproduction work. You might like Japanese watercolour if you want opaque colour but not so matt.
Thx for the review, Lindsay, very informative. I thought I would mention something I heard from another UA-cam channel with references to gouache. The channel owner used a very light wash of gouache as an under painting on watercolor paper. She said doing so helped subsequent layers of gouache to be more stable and not lift as much. That it formed a solid foundation to work on. Sounded to me like you have made the discovery as well, but with the Inktense pan set. I wonder just how much of the Inktense formulation is using ingredients found in gouache?
Interesting, thanks!
Is there anything comparable to the inktence pencils because I got a pack of 24 and I love them but I cant afford a bigger set so I was wondering if theres anything cheaper with a comparable quality
Id say albright druer but they are as expensive. You can get the additional colors you want open stock so you don't have to buy a bigger set which will have duplicates.
Not sure I understand the difference between these and the blocks. Got the pencils and like that you put the colour down and then fix and blend, Would the white spots lift as they are on top of another layer and in the butterfly video you talk about too thick a layer lifting as if it has to be in contact with the paper. Love your enthusiasm and energy.
You can use the blocks like the pan paint. The only difference is the white seems more opaque and there are some new colors.
How to bring that such a soft look with all that colours you mentioned in that sky and water scene. No colour is sticking out, blended in and giving such a feel. Can you do a short/long tutorial of that painting or something like that Lindsay. It looks simple, but when you do it, we can learn a lot, want to see how are doing it.
Sure, if I can find that postcard I painted to look at lol!
I can’t find these open stock. Nor the blocks. I’d like to get some to replace favorites… specially the white. Do you know where we can get this open stock? And thank you for your review. I adore the intense I have them all pencils blocks and pans. The pans are the most convenient for travel but I also really enjoy the blocks and pencils for their own use. The neat thing about the blocks as you can break them and color them with a side of one and get a nice texture at the same time
Blick has the open stock pans
Thx for the lightfastness chart link. I wonder if you could make a lightfastness test vid for this. It seems the pencil sets are rated worse than the pans.
I live in Maine and the sun isn't really strong enough to do a proper test. I rarely see fading in products except alcohol marker swatch cards hung on my wall. If trust Derwent charts. They are very conservative with their ratings.
Hello Lindsay, As always, enjoyed your video. I was wondering if you ever tested out the Dainayw 48 metal/tin set of watercolors that includes 2 brushes and some watercolor paper? Also, the Artistro 48 watercolor paint set in the neat teal & embossed gold metal tin? Thank you so much for your videos. I am a graphic designer, but have been a stay at home mom for a very long time. My husband is building me an outdoor art studio and I am getting back into painting. In art school we just used the cheap Crayola type watercolor sets because we used so much of it for large watercolors. I never bought myself nice watercolors until now. I did not know where to start. Your videos have helped me out TREMENDOUSLY and I have already bought myself several brands (student and professional), and am enjoying painting again after all these years. Thank you so much for your positive and fun attitude. You are truly an inspiration. Have a wonderful day!
I'm not sure on those sets, there are new ones popping up everyday that are the same, just branded differently.
Thank you for the interesting review as usual! I am told that these are INDIA ink (as opposed to the other forms of ink). Do you have any thoughts on how they compare to, say, Dr. Ph Martin's India Ink in terms of about everything you've talked about and maybe things like fabric printing?
I haven't use Dr Martins india ink on fabric so I can't compare. The Dr Martins in does not move on paper after it has dried like intense can a bit. Also the dr martin ink has a bit of a gloss to it, probably a shellac in the ink that inktense does not have, it is matte when dry.
I will not be purchasing these because I have my pencils. I'm very happy with my pencils. I just like watching your reviews. TFS.
I’ve got the full set of block and pencils. And also somehow a small set of each as well. I’m not making art to sell at this point, so I think I’ve got enough here without those pans. I did buy the Graphitint pans, because...yeah I’ve got no good reason. Just like to play with all the things. Lol
Thanks for this review. Since these don't appear to be truly permanent like the Inktense pencils and blocks, I don't see any use for these watercolors.
I've been eying this set. As you mentioned this would be good for underpaintings due to the vibrancy of the color which is what I would plan on using this set for.
What's made me hesitant and kind of annoys me that there are two pans that don't have a score of 8 (4 and 6 respectively). The cherry red seems really out of place in that regard.
The two smaller sets have the numbers on the printed swatch sheet (I got the two sets separately and combined them into one tin) so it is a little odd they larger set doesn't.
Hey Linds. I currently have the 24 inktense pencils and I kinda love them. Not sure if I want to go full set syndrome and get the 100 set (which yes will give a few duped) or get the blocks. Thoughts?
Well, they put the most useful and unique colors in the smaller packs and they blend well so I'd probably add blocks to the pencils
Can't see why they'd call this a "studio" product when it's no harder to throw in your bag and take it with you than either or both of the pans of 12. Also, a lot better than throwing a tin of blocks in your bag as well, especially if you decide to toss in the set of 72. Even the 24 set. That's what I'd do with it. Keep the pencils and blocks for at home and take these as "mobile" supplies.
My 24 set actually had a cap on the waterbrush, lol
How does one get rid of the pencil lines when using the inktense pencil?
The outliner is permanent. But you and soften other lines with water.
@@thefrugalcrafteryeah i cud see on the swatches of the pencils the lines underneath
These are definitely on my wish list.
if using the white with watercolor, can watercolor be layered on top?
You should be able to but I havent tried it yet.
Do you have designated brushes for your Inktense products? I was wondering, if it would ruin my watercolor brushes...
You can use watercolor brushes
I love my inktense pencils and small set blocks. But they have a learning curve maybe when I am more advanced I will get these.. they look fun and easier then the blocks.. which are a bit challenging.. do you have a tutorial on the blocs?
Yes, a few, search my blog or channel
I’m trying to find your painting of the Monarch Butterflies. Has it been loaded? Great review and very timely for me as I was just reviewing the Derwent product line. Thank you!
Yes, it's up ua-cam.com/video/RVvBXOu0pZM/v-deo.html
