    This series should be a masterplan for boat builders around the world and will be a ‘how to’ tutorial for many years to come. Johan, the carpenter, engineer, architect is beyond amazing in his approach to this project.

      Yes a master plan on what not to do, guess you have never watched other boat builders, Yaba.... wheels will never work, long beams should of been place under the original frame on the ground and the hull dragged outside.... then a crane or two could have lifted and rolled the hull....

    In a zombie apocalypse, I want to be in Johan’s survivor group. Just another way to say how amazing his abilities as a builder, engineer and problem-solver are to see. Congratulations, Vera, on learning to ride a two-wheeler. That’s a great accomplishment, too.

    Amazing! I think we all knew Johan (spelling?) was a master navigator and sailor, a mechanic, carpenter, awesome dad, extremely hard worker. Not until this video did I realize quite the extent of his giant talent and knowledge. Master engineer/designer and rigger. I can't believe they got that big box on top of that hull with that rig! Also: when I saw Vera on that bike it hit me that we are watching her grow up in total parallel to the boat growing in that barn, it really hit me, brought tears to my eyes, yes it did! This is definitely up there with Sampson Boat Co., these are the two greatest sites I know of.... Truly inspiring! THANK YOU BOTH!

    I noticed in your introduction for the video today, you refer to yourselves as a "Swedish couple". I would like to point out, with the addition of your daughter Vera, you have become a "Swedish family!" While my interest in your sailing travels may have brought me to your UA-cam channel originally, Vera has certainly earned herself a spot on the "marquis sign." I'm absolutely enjoying the boat build, but getting to watch Vera growing up in your videos is a huge bonus in my eyes. Thank you Mom and Dad for allowing us the pleasure of watching your family grow!

    Consider adding thin steel sheet to the bottom of the cradles, it will radically improve rigidity as steel will take all tension stresses. The sheet needs to be fastened at the sides so it can handle the load. Also you can fill the gaps between the beams with foam to make a strong, solid beam.

      Concur.
      A steel sheet at the bottom, properly fastened to the sides should work best to stiffen en strengthen the cradle.
      I'm mostly worried about stress at about 1/4 from the ends or so, where the cradle loses contact with the hull.
      In this case, with the hull in close contact with the cradle, the hull itself stiffens the cradle.
      There are cradles with no inherent stiffness that derive all their form stability from the boat's hull. They are called slings ;)
      Basically you make a sling with wheels. As long as the thinnest bit of the cradle can take the horizontal tension exerted by the hull (squeezing out the sides of the cradle), then you should be good. The steel plates can take the majority of that horizontal tension load.

      Also concur. Think about composition floor joists. All the strength is in the top and bottom beams. The top in compression, the bottom in tension. The web in the middle really just holds the top and bottom apart. In this case the middle beams also add needed rigidity. Beautiful work. Love your channel.

    Rolling the boat over will be exciting! We build ours right way up mainly braise we found it to counting project in our shed but you guys definitely have it covered!

    Would you consider making a fibreglass mould of the hull at the sections where the boxes will be located? That way you could be sure of the fit to the hull and also spread the load on the box more than the thin plywood. Important when the full weight of the boat will be resting on these areas as the boat is completed over the coming years. I think the pulley arrangement to hoist and manoever the cradle was simple and efficient.

    Once the boat is done with the cradle you'll have a fine portable skate ramp.

    Once you have it flipped and back in place, maybe some closely conforming boxes underneath and filled with expanding foam. That will help keep the hull from deforming.

    For the wider stern box, placing additional wheels closer to the centerline will reduce the bending moment greatly. Wheels outboard will ensure adequate stability against tipping

    As a fabricator, I would recommend some boxed steel tubing. Maybe some 2x4x¼". You can cut to length the bolt it in about 10 places along either side of the box.

    I would ask you to think about angle iron for the sides of the carrier. The flat steel can flex one way very well and the angled would resist a bit better......... just a thought........... enjoy

    Great video that really shows the thinking required to do this kind of heavy work. When I was planning something similar my idea was to lay up a fibreglass shell over the hull using thick plastic sheet barrier. Making the shell with fibreglass and thin plywood layers to build up to the required strength. You could then either pop the shell off and build your frame around it or build the frame to the shell in situ on the hull.

    You can reduce the box span by adding wheels to the middle. Maybe add steel angle or square tubing to the outside bottom long edge and add the wheels to the steel.

    Ewan, lovely job on the support boxes!
    May I suggest that you consider closing the bottom face of the boxes with a glued and screwed plywood skin (maybe around 8mm - 12mm) you’ll be creating a much stronger unit in bending and I very much doubt that you’d need to add further steel structure later.
    That added skin will be in tension when the unit’s on its wheels.
    Given the width of each box, that tensile load will be distributed across a huge cross section of ply which will be good for several tons more than you’ll be presenting to it.
    Just adding a retired old engineer’s perspective. I hope that you’ll not be offended, I know that you are immensely capable and the quality of your workmanship is absolutely impeccable.

      We will add a 21mm plywood bottom once I have the steel plates installed. I left the bottom out for access to the bolt going through the steel plates. Cheers!

    Two 6 inch RSJs under the boxes with skates under at same width apart for both boxes ( so both run on same tracks). Can easily be bolted to the box once it turned over. Job done.Then no need to worry about sagging.
    Or even better than skates just use greased beams to move in and out of shed as has been done for centuries.

    Another way to build the cradles while the boats upside down... heavy glass laminates 5--10mm thick over a double layer of 1' wide corrugated cardboard running athwartship over the bilge where you want the cradles to sit. then glue a thick tall and wide bearer athwartship full length of the pad, level and scribed to the laminated pad. ( 3-4layers thick of 18mm ply on a boat this size would be ideal for the bearers.) Bond the bearer to the pad with more heavy glass laminate too. later when removed, replace the cardboard with 10mm foam (yoga mats work well and cheap). the compressed foam from the weight of the hull sitting right side up will approximately match the offset created by the previous double layers of corrugated cardboard and fit perfectly to the bilge.

    keep in mind the "span" on those cradles isn't a point loaded span. The width of the hull is supported at every point where the hull and the cradle meet and they almost become "one" in terms of a load analysis. You aren't wrong to reinforce it like you have but you don't need to be that worried about the span supporting the load of the boat.

    A couple of thoughts: First, the Emajõe Lodjaselts (www.youtube.com/@hansalodi) project in Estonia just launched their barge using large inflatable rollers, something to consider for getting RAN 3 out of the shed. Second, you do not need to reinforce the keel-side of the roll-boxes to hold the finished weight, just get the hull back in the shed and jack it up to put a stronger carriage under it then.
    Thanks for filming this it lets the rest of us live our dreams vicariously. I started watching as you were buying timber. It was especially fun to watch the planking since I was building my own cedar planked boat at the time, but mine is just a 18 foot (6 m) canoe. 🙂

    The aft cradle maybe 4.3 m in width, however the wheels do not need to be that far apart. Put the lift points at the same width as your forward cradle and allow the outer part to cantilever.

    We have a steal bar called L bar( in many different thicknesses.)
    If you can find that over there at a good price use that on the bottom and incorporate the wheel base into it. You could add holding pins to hold the the cradle and kind of make it removable that way you could get it up to a high point. Just an idea is all😊

    Have you thought about keeping the wheel span the same front and back. This will make the tracks to roll the wheels on when you move the hull simpler, and the weight outboard of the stern frame wheels will reduce bending moment. Check with a structural engineer....

    Based on your comment 120mm of height for the cross beam steel pieces is not that much. Now that the boxes are built I would extend the side steel plates out to the edge of the boxes then weld a rt angle piece under the steel plates holding the wheels to the side plates. Remember the maximum bending stress is going to occur in the middle of the boxes and drop of to just a point load at the ends. If you think you need more steel plates across the sides of the boxes adding another 3 to 4 ft of steel plate to the center will add significant bending stress to the box. The bending stress of a solid beam goes up as the square of the height, so a 2 x 8 is 4 times stronger than a 2 x 4 on its edge. Doubling a beams width is only twice as strong in bending. Assume you are going to leave all the temporary bulkheads in place until the hull is turned over.
