- It's time for a catch up!
Here we go back in time to show you all how Tarkine started, from laying the keel to fastening the first planks! Matt takes some time to answer a few questions that have come up and a recap of what been happening this past year.
/ aboatbytheriver
I built a boat last summer. A 7ft Portugues Dingy. Fun. No plans. I need to get it on the water now that the weather is warm again.
I’m finding it very hard to believe that neither of you knew much of traditional boatbuilding, laminating with epoxy, woodworking, carving, etc. before you started this project. At least confirm there was gold-leaf experience! :-). Truly impressive across all expectation! Keep going! Cause, well, you’re too far Inuit to stop now.
Ah yes! Books go a long way and Matt has always sailed boat and owned them so picked up a bit there. Enough staring and observing how other boats are built also helps but we certainly jumped in the deep end!
Yes can’t turn back now! Haha
I've been a long-term follower of Tally Ho, and Acorn to Arabella. It was great to stumble on your channel. It's so rewarding following a local production of a boat build. Really enjoying your progress. Mike
Thanks Mike, great to hear. Hopefully we can keep you entertained and happy! Cheers
I also have followed Leo on Tally Ho and Steve on A2A. I just stumbled across you channel and immediately clicked to follow. It can be a long process, keep your spirits up.
Thank you 2 for making video from stem to stern. Your going to have one beautiful boat when you finish. It truly is, what dreams are made of!
Oh thanks! Building the dream! Haha
I'm hoping you will keep making videos right through her launch and of course the adventures that follow. You guys have made amazing progress and I look forward to each new video to see what is next on the build list. Keep up the great work!
Yes we will keep it up as long as you all enjoy! Cheers
I loved these early photographs. Keep up the great work and make sure you follow Doctor's orders.
Yeah the photos are great to reflect on how far we’ve come, yes doctors orders are being followed very closely!
I'm impressed by you jumping in at the deep end like that instead of trying a much smaller boat for a first go.
Love you guys ❤❤❤
As an avid viewer of boat builds, this is fast becoming a favourite of mine. Stunning work. Well done from the UK.
Oh thanks, glad we are interesting enough!
no water tight bulkheads???
Love you guys ❤❤❤
Huge fun to see y'all building this beautiful vessel! I love to follow the process!
Oh great to hear, yes she’s not small! We are slowly coming to terms with that hahah
What a beautiful thing you are building! 🙂
It really is!
Thanks for sharing the early photos. I do like the technique of the cheap (ish) moulds followed by laminating the ribs. The view of the interior with the moulds removed is stunning. Keep up the good work.
Yeah it’s was slightly odd way but worked great, it’s often done but not on such a big scale
We done guys, nice summary of works to date. Beautiful and clean build and really showing a craft you excel at. Look forward to continued episodes.
Thankyou!
Amazing how casually you display your craftsmanship, the finish looks incredible, and super inspiring
Oh thanks, it’s hard to reach perfection and satisfaction on your own project but we try..
What a fantastic effort. You guys would give Acorn To Arabella a run for their money.
The thing I find most fascinating about this channel is their approach to the hull building process.
Give it acouple of years and A2A will need a "refit".
It appears to be a Paul Gartside plan. I am currently building a cutter designed by Paul. Great work!
That's so cool! It is indeed a Gartside design. Which design of Gartside are you building?
Thanks for the great content . Looking forward to seeing all progress.
Our pleasure!
Brilliant what a sense of achievement you must be proud. Looking forward to seeing many more episodes.
Yes it’s great to sometimes look back at how far we’ve come!
And a good morning to you too!! 😁
Or good evening….
Hey guys, that was a great idea to compile a series of your photographs like this,it answers so many of the questions I had.And now I know how you got to where you are. Thanks for sharing your story,I’ll keep watching what ever you share that’s for sure👌🙂
Oh yeah that’s what we like to hear! As long as you keep watching we will keep building and creating! It’s a win win situation ahah
Thankyou for showing us all the pre-youtube progress. :)
Our pleasure.
Been along for a while now(from afar,) but this video really....LONG PAUSE(thinking)...., well,.... informed me(understatement,) what a humongous project this has been and how much fun it's been watching. But no, I'm not going to build a boat....cheers rr Normandy, France
Yes we always love your comments!! Thanks for following along. Appreciate it!
But maybe building a little boat?? That is also fun!
I love my boat build videos, but this one is a gem.
Thank you for the compliment Peter!
Just found this for the first time, Congratulations she is a beautiful thing. Hopefully get to see her for real one day sailing around our waters
Fantastic news! Glad your joining our journey.
Truly amazing work, her transom looks absolutely beautiful.
Thanks David!
This is great, a totally different approach than either Arabella or Tally-Ho, but with all the same recognisable elements. Lofting, molds, cabin plans, kitchen builds, fairing the deck beams, chainsawing the superstructure (!) -eat your heart out Steve, rudder builds, etc, etc. Can't wait for things like the mast, rigging & sail layout.
Hah very true! A lot of similar themes but all done slightly differently which is alway interesting! Pick the parts you like from each boat and you’d have quite a nice boat!
These recaps are very helpful and entertaining for people with memory issues like mine! Thanks 🎉😂
Great to hear!
You guys are the awesomest awesome folk I've seen in ages! :-) inspiring, amazing.
I have great admiration for you guys, and the videos bring back many memories of "the old days" - look forward to the day when the videos are of you two cruising the world, conquering the elements, and having broad smiles on your "dials"!
We are looking forward to getting in the water also! Thanks
Wow that's amazing you are working so hard !
Thankyou!! We are giving it a good go! Haha
Thank you so much! We are following the progress from the start but see it again in summary I realize how amazing your work is!
We will visit you and Tarkine somewhere in the world, dont be surpised if more people will pop up!!
Well we look forward to a visit one day and a proper introduction! Thanks for watching and leaving such a nice comment
Here's hoping your shoulder gets strong soon so you can get back to the building. Your videos are great but Tarkine is clearly the main feature.
Good to hear! Tarkine is the priority!
It's hard to say just how great this project is - coming from a long-time wooden boat aficionado, to see a small, creative, and tremendously industrious team assemble this vault of cold-molded integrity, in a perfect length, and with a customized below-decks, is for me exhilarating. Tarktine is truly awesome and the group is to be commended. What wonderful stuff. May she blue-water for a century.
Almost poetic! Thankyou, we are glad you can appreciate Tarkine and the work done also!
You're building a beautiful boat - just love your channel. You deserve so many more subscribers. You need some shameless name dropping by other boat building channels, such as; Sampson Boat Co, Sailing SY Mistress, Life On the Hulls, Sail Life, Ship Happens, Project Brupeg, Acorn to Arabella, Sailing Flying Coney, to name a few. There are thousands of people like me who love watching channels like yours. All you need is a litttle advertising. ;-) Thanks for sharing.
Haha yeah we will get there! It’s a slow game getting views… Sampson and Arabella are almost done so hopefully we can keep people entertained!
Great work dudes. As I've said, my wife and I built a 36 footer back in the 80's-90's. We did it pretty traditionally, Jarrah planks on steam bent Karri ribs, copper/bronze fastened, ( black locust trunnels for blind fastenings) caulked with oakum, no glue. The interior fit out was cedar of Lebanon sourced from an old tree grown locally, again, no glue. No paint inside. Gaff cutter rigged, galv standing rigging, solid pinaster pine mast. Lots of ways to skin a cat eh?. She's still going strong 30 years later. Hasn't even been re-caulked. Loving your build. Going to be one v. strong boat. Loved the transom.
That’s great to hear she kept so stable, what a project you had also! That’s very impressive
Wow talk about balls you two our bloody amazing well done just stubbed on your cannel love it keep going guy’s
Thanks for the sub! Cheers
I just watch you walk down your passage way to get to a through hole 😊 you must be proud it looked great
Sensational effort looking great.
Thank you! Cheers!
Watching you build this beautiful boat makes me want to build one for myself. Thank you for sharing your wonderful stories.
Strong. Well done.
Thanks! Yes very strong!
That was an interesting bit of history. What is over and above is your woodworking skills, the joinery is all so fantastic and your finishes so perfect, you have a high bar! The shape of the boat and all that planking this way then that way, gorgeous!
Oh thanks, when building your own boat or house you can get carried away in the details and finding satisfaction is often hard!
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River what? I’ve done tons of projects and am very picky, and when I look at them I think, yeah, I did that!! With your build, it’s okay, we can all stand back and say wow, they built that and it’s amazing! I know what you mean about the details though, they are often the most important parts!
Howdy from Texas! Beautiful video.
Well Howdy Texas! Gday from Tasmania haha
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River I have an ancestor (4x grandfather) who spent 10-12 years as a political prisoner in Tasmania when the British called it Van Diemen’s Land. He had tried to start a Revolution in Canada! We were invited to a Memorial for his compatriots, but Covid cancelled it. We’d still love to visit. Really enjoying your build and your videos.
1500 views in a few hours. A good start!! Should be encouraging. I for one admire you 2 and respect your efforts
Yes slowly climbing! Each video is generally getting more views which is amazing!
I Just stumbled across this upload today , and with tally-ho in the water and on the home stretch , the timing seemed pretty good. keep up the good work . best wishes from your latest sub , and greetings from kalgoorlie / Boulder WA
Oh well welcome to our little channel!! Glad you stumbled upon us, tally go does look amazing! We hope to be there one day soon.
I think I should go and watch from the start video number one and not start from video 18 it just came up so I started watching 👍👍👍👍👍👍 I’m hooked 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Hah oh yes but maybe this is the best video and you are now spoilt!? What then.. haha will have to wait for our next release on Sunday and hopefully it’s up to standard!
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Don’t worry I’ll go back and start from the start and catch up. As for EP 19 I’m expecting big stuff and I have a eye for detail 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 Thanks 😊
Amazing work! Keep it up! She will be stunning.
Yes we sure do hope so!
You keep making the vidieos and I will be watching for sure.
This one was another great effort, content, music and info in balance.
Love your work.
Martin
Thanks Martin, that’s really reassuring to hear. We will hopefully keep a good standard
Tassy boatbuilding alive and well. Congratulations on the work to date. Proper job! No wonder this place had a worldwide reputation for great looking timber vessels.
Oh thanks! Yes Tasmania has some amazing quality wood which naturally goes hand in hand with boat building! The waterways down here are also quite nice for sailing and messing around in boats.
The planer bit 😂 I made a noise out loud when you were doing that!
Ha oh yes gets your blood pumping and wakes you up that’s for sure!
Well no one will question your ambition. Lovely boat you have under way.
Yes you have to be ambitious!
Stunning beauty inside just after moulds come out. Wow.
Yeah she looked great for a day or two but didn’t take Matt long to start filling her up with stuff haha
You guys are doing an amazing job, looks like a real labour of love. That transom has to be one of the most exquisite I've seen,Just beautiful, she's going to be a stunner.
Oh so nice of you to say! We are quite happy with ourselves also haha
Oh dear, another build to follow! Beautiful boat and great work!
Welcome on board! We hope you enjoy the videos.
You two are a great team . The boat is a great choice,is beautiful and truly worth building. Keep up the good work
Thanks! Great to hear
I loved the photo journey of the build beginnings. Pics are more clear than video
Oh great to know, we may do some more one day..
Wow...my total respect and admiration ! She's going to be a beautiful yacht. Heartwarming to see young people doing this. You've got many years to enjoy her and reflect on your achievement. Well done...loved the video...
Oh so nice of you to say! Really appreciate the positivity! Amazing stuff. Keeps us going!
Beautiful stuff
Wonderful project
The two you are are pretty neat on so many ways . Your humble low key no fan fair just building a sailing vessel that fits who you both are . Hats off to you .
Angus
SV Violet Walters.
Thankyou SV violet! Much appreciated
The shape of the hull is beautiful. 👌
Oh yes! We think so too haha
Great build lofting full size is a must Even for a larger boat Ribbands great method That method you did is easier than carvel Plank on frame
Wow,So have a good days.
Understanding that video taping and editing slows down production. Thanks for sharing your time as you both build a beautiful vessel.
Our pleasure!
Very well done! I also follow Ran Sailing's channel and it is interesting to see the similarities even though they are two different types of vessels. Ran builds their hull upside down. I am impressed by the courage you show and wish you all the best.
Oh yes we are familiar with RAN sailing. Seeing where they are now brings back memories.. planking on and on.
Wow, awesome work and what a team. Enjoyed every minute
That’s fantastic news! Hopefully they will continue to improve.
Just had time to look at your boat build. Awesome job, good choice of engine and boat design!
I have been rebuilding an Atkin Ingrid, red cedar plank on oak frames, that was launched in 1973, needed lots of work when l got her.
She has a 70 hp kubota which is plenty of power even when going against the current. I changed her from ketch rig to a cutter and am redoing the interior next. Keep on keeping on!
Oh that’s great to know, we worried 60hp would t be enough but it should be fine.. can’t beat an Atkin Ingrid! Very pretty boat
Going well mate, well done!
First comment on a new video! Cheers
C'est vraiment du très très beau travail ! Bravo à tous 👍 (France )
so beautiful. I love her lines. hard work and joy. I'm living a dream thru your videos.
Ha that’s great to hear, glad we can share with you.
It's amazing to see all the very early photos and footage, before you started your channel. Your achievements so far are even more impressive, seeing everything come from just a lofting table. I actively avoid sailing - I've tried learning to sail and overcoming my fears for about 40 years to no avail - but I'm a house builder, and find your channel so inspiring and satisfying to watch. I'm even looking forward to watching you sail, and that's something I didn't think I'd feel 🤣
Wow, beautifull lines. Greetings from the Netherlands
Amazing work. Great explanation. Thanks for sharing.
Oh thanks, it’s good we got a chance to actually explain some details from earlier in the project
Good on ya guys!
Beautiful build!
Thank you!
Love it! Beautiful the way you work together.
Regarding the butterfly, in our case a source of small leaks until we replaced the Lexan and brought it all the way out to the edge of the frame. Attached a trim frame around the edge of the hatch, on top of the Lexan for looks. Used smoke shaded Lexan to reduce glare.
Oh nice thanks for that, didn’t even consider the glare on the glass! Nice one
Excellent video...
Congratulations! For what you do! Well done!. You make the plans. Greetings from GREECE!
Oh thanks and glad we made it as far as Greece! Amazing
Amazing Build!
Glad you think so!
You two are great! This is the best time in your lives to do what you are doing.
Good Luck
Really beautiful work!
Thanks guys! Your a secret idols, we hope to sail and see what you two have!
Great work, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
wow, 4 years, long way to go. good luck.
Oh yeah! Not that long if you enjoy it though
Keep your spirits up. The ramifications of your build will resonate for years and come back to you in unfathomable ways, please stay strong.
Thanks for your kind words, we stay positive and that’s half the battle won!
I drive past quite often and have been curious about the beautiful boat in the shed
(also pretty sure I stopped and pet your dog while you were taking a break and I was looking for my ball on the golf course 😂😂😂)
Haha we are glad it’s reaching locally! If you would like we are happy to do a golf club tour of Tarkine? Show our neighbours what’s behind the doors!
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River I'd love a tour sometime, I'm sure my wife would thoroughly enjoy that too
Great work! Beautiful boat! Top team!!!
Thanks mate! Your coming along very well also! Especially for a so,o build, great job. You’ll be floating before us that’s for sure!
I have just found your channel, have watched this video and will now go back to episode 1 to get a proper perspective of all your work. What a fabulous project!
Yes a good plan! Hope you enjoy the earlier ones haha
amazing thank you for sharing
Oh nice and thankyou for watching!
Superb. What a partnership you have there. Hope the shoulder is back if form soon.
Getting there with the shoulder.. a slow road!
Incredible boat plan, nice progress.
Thank you! She definitely is our dream boat
Amazing progress guys, wish you loads of luck!!!
Thanks, we will need a fair bit of luck!
Great job, and video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Clean build. Well done you two. Be proud....
Thanks, we often take a moment to marvel at how far we’ve come, which also comes with the reminder of how far to go!
Truely a work of art and Craftsmanship and craftsgirlship.
Haha appreciate the gender term! Thanks
Yes! This is great content!
I’m so proud of you guys!!!!!!!❤
Thanks Junn! Let us know when you want to come down and help haha
I’m sorry we missed building the hull..
It looks pretty awesome 👍🏻

Thanks for watching!
Wow, how have I not known about your build? Awesome work! Subscribed and can’t wait to see more!
Oh hey there! We are glad you stumbled upon us, stay tuned!
Outstanding…thanks for sharing and keep up the good work..
Thanks, will do!
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Langzaam maar zeker en met gevoel..…
You guys are doing an awesome project! We are on the last steps to start our rebuild project...following you guys! Cheers
Well thankyou! What project are you working on?
Loved the photos too. A lot of people may think that everything is always on video but there was a life before UA-cam 🤣Keep up the great work and I hope your shoulder will soon be healed enough to do a bit of ,light?, labor again to help build up the muscles.. All the best!!
Yes there was even a think called film camera once!! Haha
Light duties are close now but have to be careful getting carried away in the moment!
