I spent many summer vacations in San Miguel 30 years ago. My uncle was an artist from Texas studying at the Art Institute. He had an enormous apartment in the center of the city for $30 a month. I bet you couldn't rent a closet there for under $200 a month now. LOL It's still one of my favorite cities of all the places I visited in 30 years of travel. Saludos de Argentina!

There has always been a natural pattern of migration of Mexicans to USA and North...I grew up in San Diego and remember many fond times in Mexico, families I grew up with who became educated, prominent and even famous people...I loved Mexico as a place to go for goods services and great food and kind people...there was never the threat to US security there is today from the corridor being flooded with illegal immigrants from all over the world. It is no longer the safe wonderful place it was. The drug traffic and the human traffic and all associated crimes and businesses have tainted the charm for at least 150 miles south....but if you go farther south you will find the loveliest people and culture food and art...this country is our neighbor and we have always been compatible in more ways than any differences. The unfortunate immigration from the other parts of the world is causing the problems in the USA today not the Mexican population...

Hi. I put my things in storage (after weeding out a lot of it) for a while. When I was ready, I had the things I still wanted moved down. I brought my car, but if you get permanent status, it gets complicated. Furniture is readily available here, and there are some good consignment stores. Tools...well, that depends. I'm an artist and brought my favorite tools.
I think almost everyone finds it easy to make friends in San Miguel. The population of single women is very large and there are many groups that do volunteer work or get together to play games or sports. In the expat community we all came from somewhere else and we are strangers in a new land. That tens to make you more aware of new people. I believe it would be worth a visit for you, Laura!!
I think SMA is an especially good place for single people of either sex. There are many single people and they get together to do everything you might like, hiking, Mexican Train, bridge or volunteer work. There is a very large dance community, pickle ball, tennis and all of these welcome new members!! Good luck, Laura!! I bet you would like it here!!

A 19 year old female friend is flying into Leon on her own in March at 7:30pm at night and curious if she is going to SMA if it's better to stay overnight in close to airport in Leon and get taxi the next day or if the roads are safe at night between Leon and SMA at 9-11pm at night? Any tips on this?

That’s what irks me the most. As a Mexican you welcome foreigners with open arms, a big smile, and all the intentions to **make them feel like family** and join the good vibes of the town but the attitude you get in response is the same as when British colonists interacted with locals back in the day or as if you were part of the attractions of a zoo. Expats form their closed and homogeneous communities and only recur to locals when they need something done for them. Then you go visit the USA with that same smile on your face and it immediately fades away when people call the cops on you for chilling at a park, when you enter a store and they follow you everywhere or when people see you with disgust when you’re looking for help. Of course not everyone is like that, but for the most part that’s the vibe American expats give in San Miguel.
Gringos please explain this to everybody: The system we use in Mexico is the following. If you ask me how long will something take i will answer you HOW LONG I WISH IT TOOK. You take that number, multiply by two and move to the next unit, for example I will repair your wall in tree days. That means six weeks. This will take tree hours, it means it will be finished in six days. Not too difficult. Next big thing THE WORD AHORITA MEANS I WILL SHOW UP THE MOMENT IT IS CONVENIENT FOR BOTH OF US or WHEN THE UNIVERSE SYNCHRONIZE US. If you relax it will be sooner.

34 lgbtq2 friendly cafes, restaurants and hotels. Very sincerely openly positive area as a gay person and the better place of 3 months of travel. Beach is to a local lake! The water is heavily filled with silt, junk, excess stuff and pollutants in Puerto Vallarta. So clear lake Swim in San Miguel is terrific. Flight fast to PV $100 and huge party ocean town, and more gay only locations. San Miguel has 4-5 gay and friends of places.
