@@ThumpemupFishingchannel Absolutely! I've got Halco 130's (yes in pink as well as other colors), some poppers, frenzy fliers, some heavier stick baits, colt snipers and flat falls, and some jigs that work on bottom fish out West (potentially for the bottom fishing stop on the way to the rigs). Is using a big jighead with a soft plastic something that is done in the GOM for bottom fish? I have caught some big grouper and lingcod in the Pacific with this technique. Will also be fishing for pinfish to bring on the boat in a 5 gallon bucket with an aerator. Am I missing anything? Do you think I should bring some of the heavier knife jigs?

    Thump 'em:
Fantastic videos, watched 2 of yours, learned a lot. Done 4 tuna trips, 2 from NB, 1 from ScatCat, and 1 from La Pesca (DD). Last trip was 4 days ago, only about 10 or so BF tuna showed up, most used for cut bait - really surprised so few BF's, usually the whole boat catches like 150 to 250 total. We got so low on cut bait chunk they broke out a few frozen BF tuna's that were not worth much as once they are frozen the meat is like cheese and won't stay on a hook well. I only saw like 2 pizza boxes of sardine chum, I think they were frozen sardines. I would venture 50% of the huge YF's hooked were lost trying to get them up to gaf them, lot's of breakoffs (I was fishing near back of boat and I witnessed it all). I lost a monster when we got it about 6 feet from surface it ran my new 100 Lb. BBG mono up against the boat and broke off. Instead of the old mantra: "That's tuna fishing" - - I think some clever guys should come up with a better method to keep the fish a bit farther from the boat and get them on board, the captain and the deckhands were considering using their harpoon, but it never happened.
We cast Halco 130's, flying fish, I was not getting any action although a more experienced guy was getting a bit better luck ( I also saw him loose at least 3 initial hook ups). Then the captain got into the action with about 3 rods/reels he had and he discovered a lot of YF's up at the port side bow area, his casting finally got multiple hook ups which he passed on back to customers who did not get a fish yet, some were landed, some were not. A sizeable amount of YF's were landed by the patient souls who just drifted out chunk bait and sat and waited patiently late into the night (which I finally did too).
    1) I was considering switching on future trips to a long 300 lb. mono or floro leader, would not be a windon though, but I am not at all afraid to use thick welder's gloves and man handle them up to gaf range - - - I have seen some deck hands in the past grab heavy mono bare handed (not recommended) and pull fish up out of the water to deck (maybe it was just BF's though). Trouble is you could hardly even reel the handle of the Senator 9/0 with the monster I hooked, much less raise the rod tip and then "reel down", I fought for 10 to 15 min and passed it over to a deckhand who fought another 10 min, barely reeling any more than I could. But I guess I would not getting any bites from wary tuna with such huge leaders, they would see them too easily. Your thoughts - suggestions ?
    2) Have you any thoughts or experience using pogy oil ? I understand it is a proven attractant (chum oil), was thinking of using barbeque injector rigs to inject it into chunk baits . . .
    3) I once tried pin perch floaters drifting 'em out at the deep water rigs at night once, but did not get any bites, maybe I was not patient enough. Wish I could buy live bait, frozen ribbon fish and all frozen is mushy, does not stay on hook well, one guy was desperately trying to cast net the multiple flying fish all around the boat - - captain caught one with a small pole net gave it to me and I hooked it up and drifted it out, but alas, no hits. Live ribbon fish or live mullet would probably be incredible on tuna, but nowhere to be found in winter.
Booked 4 tuna trips on NB yesterday for January through May . . .
    thx in advance

First thanks for watching the videos and glad they were helpful! I always bring a box of frozen sardines just in case chunks are hard to find. You can bury your hook in one and throw 4-5 over together to try to catch them on chunk.
We lose tuna every trip and unfortunately it’s usually the big ones. Neil lost a nice one last trip because it tangled in a bunch of lines. In California they use a forked pole to push the line away from the side of the boat but I haven’t seen that in the NB yet.
I have never used pogy oil, If I you wanted to soak your bait, try to dip it in the chum they are using.
I booked a trip on 5/12 so will hope to shoot another video then!
I don’t think you want to hand line a tuna and I would imagine they would see that thick of a line. I use 60lb leader it’s all a matter of technique and luck!
Thanks for watching and commenting and please subscribe!

Yep it's called a push-pole. Or Y stick. Pretty much a gaff stick but instead of a hook it's a Y shape with smooth aluminum so you can hold the line out away from the boat when it's doing it's final circles, especially at the stern with the rudders. I know they use them out of the NY canyon party boats as well as every sportfisher in Souther California uses one.
I have a few questions for ya, never done GOM party boat tuna. I do Canyon tuna fishing out of New Yersey and West Coast. Which was your favorite trip (favorite boat/crew/price range)? How effective was the jigging vs bait? In NE we use mostly 8-10oz hammered diamond jigs. Most of the tuna catching takes place at night time right? At night time in NE we use 60-80lb fluoro for bait or 50-80lb mono for jigging because its harder for the fish to see. In the west coast at night they switch to heavy knife jigs or flatfalls... drop them straight down to the marked depth and reel up as fast as you can. Of course, they are targeting 100-300lb bluefin at night so we use 100lb hollow braid to 100lb mono to a crimped short 130-200 lb mono leaders! Anyway, the reason I mention this because clearly the 100lb mono is necessary and the 200lb leader is nearly indestructible yet neither of them seem to impede the jig action of the heavy flatfalls. So maybe beefing up the line weight like the west coast does is one of the possible solutions to you losing your fish, very unfortunate. Oh one more innovation that the west coast has been using for the cow bluefin... rail rods. 8 foot long rods with extra long butts and foregrips, designed to be placed on the rail for maximum leverage. Squat down on the rod with your entire body weight then reel down as opposed to having to pull the rod up with weak arms and reel down. But another huge benefit of such a long rod is keeping the line away from the boat during end game. Anyway, best of luck. I'm glad I discovered GOM fishing because it means I can fly down during the winter and still get my tuna fix!

@@mattymako2929 Best trip is New Buccaneer boat out of Galveston. Jigging only works when blackfin tuna are around which is like May through December 10th or so. Blackfin tuna disappeared this winter and spring so far. Yellowfins hit either casted Halco lures like Pilchard color, or drift out chunk bait and wait patiently. Yes, all tuna catch is at night for most part. Biggest problem I see with deckhands on our Texas boats is they don't use any Y sticks or any method to keep line from scratching up against boat, lot's of YF tunas lost because of this. I use 100 Lb braid for casting on Texas coast anyways, but all 100 Lb. braids I have tested so far break at like 65 Lbs,. none of them can withstand, I switch to 100 Lb. mono on my Penn 16/0's for jigging and drifting which almost gets 100 Lb. in my tests. Point me a link to those rail rods in action, that appears to be a great solution, thx !

Thanks for the great info! I think I spoke with you on 360TUNA but what weight ball bearing snap swivels and split rings are you using to rig up for popping and jigging? What is your recommendation for assist hook size and length of the cord? I've jig fished for tuna on the West Coast and I never thought to use your system. Was always tying and retying jigs and wasting a lot of fluro leader. What weight leader do you recommend by the way and how long? I saw your other video saying for popping you don't want the braid to fluro leader hanging up on the guides so leave it short. I've done about 3-4 feet of leader for throwing "irons" out west and jigging. What about for the deep drop? I would just tie on about 10 or 20 yards of 40lb mono leader for bottom fishing just so I can tie on hooks and sinkers but not lose the sensitivity of the braid. Hope to share the rail with you some day and learn in person! Tight lines!

    • @ThumpemupFishingchannel
      @ThumpemupFishingchannel  Рік тому

Hey Brian, I generally go as heavy as the largest fish I expect to catch! I am probably running 150-200lb for the Gulf and 400lb for bluefin. For assist hooks it’s based on the size of the fish but probably a 7/0 or larger. I use different lengths of shock cord to try to keep the tip of the hook in the middle of the jig so a longer hook for a Benthos and a shorter one for a flatfall. I run a 25’ wind-on for bottom fishing with 65lb braid and 80lb fluro wind-on.

@Thump’em up Fishing channel that's great news! Out west we had to pack our own sinkers. That tackle bag got real heavy on a bottom fishing trip when we knew we were fishing 300 fathoms down in choppy conditions. Another question here, do you normally drive down the morning of? I'm planning on driving down the day before but have no idea about lodging or where to stay. I'm going to try for some pinfish either the night before or morning of to bring on the boat. How's the drive back to Dallas after a 36 hour trip? I'm in Austin so it won't be as bad but thinking of just heading back up and leaving the fish on ice and cleaning in the morning!

Alex, please don’t but mine! They are overkill for the Gulf of Mexico! For spinning reels, I would recommend: Shimano Spheros, or Saragosa in 18-20k size, Finn Nor lethal or a Diawa BG or similar reel. For conventional reels, Avet makes reasonable reels. If you can find a Major Craft or Jigging World Ghost Hunter popping rod 7’6” or longer and 60lb or more that would work! I use Synit, Carpenter, Valley Hill and Yamaha Blanks rods and Shimano Stella 20K reels because in use them for Bluefin. Call me to walk through what to get!

I cut the length so that my lure is right where I want it to be on my back cast and the knot is not inside the rod tip so that it doesn’t pass through the eyes and create friction.
