    I am a big time gear junkie. Videos like this are so dangerous!!! I have impulsive purchase problems! 😅 Thanks Benjie! The few times I've been bluefin fishing, they were very line shy. I was using 15lb. Test with super small bronze hooks and anchovies. 20 pound test wasn't getting bit, and even a shiny hook would turn them away. I'm sure that the conditions change from moment to moment. Thanks for another informative video sir!

      haha you're not a true fisherman if you can't relate to this lol!
      Agreed with the BFT, the first one I ever got bit on 20 lb test. It was only like a 30 pound schoolie but it still kicked my butt!!

    I’ve had the pleasure of fishing with both of these guys on my first offshore experience. Anthony is a fountain of knowledge and extremely outgoing. Benjie, you have some great fishing experience as well and I believe you have a rare gift for interviewing. For boats, I'd take a look at the New Lo An, Tribute, Old Glory, and Tomahawk for starters. And I def recommend a min of a 1.5 day for Tuna. A lot of times, the night bite is when we see a lot of the action and a 1.5 day can capitalize on that. Tight lines!

    I find it a bit strange how equipment changes from coast to coast.
    Here on the east coast, the 5.5 - 6.0 Tuna sticks rule head boats for the compact size and stopping power.
    I've always gone heavy on line unless tournament fishing, then it's IGFA equipment and line class only. Hi-Seas Quattro or Ande Back Country or Tournament line in 40-100 lb rating. Also, drop weight usually is 16-20 ounces. Peeler crabs rubber banded to a 6/0 hook. Anything close to the surface goes for some type of spoon with squid or pork rind streamer..

    first off thank you for very informative videos. i have a question on line rating on rods. i understand power, action and lure weight but Rod line rating doesnt make sense to me, the rod cant detect what line you use right? you can use rod rated for 40-60lbs you can use 80 (20 above max) or 50 middle or 20lb (20 below) line and put 10 lbs of drag on your reel and the rod will all bend the same. i think drag rating on a rod will make more sense than a line rating right?

    on the phenix axis 780H , Anthony mention that is a heavy 30lb rod , what did he meant by a" heavy 30lb" is there a light 30lb and medium 30lb rods??

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Tony, the Axis 780H is rated 25 to 60 so 30 pounds is on the lower end of that rating. What that means is that it will have more backbone than for example, a rod that is rated 20 to 30. Both rods are rated for 30 pound, but the 25 to 60 will give you more power and therefore, a bit more leverage and control when fighting fish in that class.
      This is why Anthony emphasizes holding a rod and choosing one that fits each individuals comfort level as there will be multiple rod options within each line class and what fits one person might not fit the next.
      I hope that makes sense!

      Hi David, do you remember which video you're referencing? I have 3 videos where I caught bluefin. I only have 1 setup as of now, a Penn Fathom 25 paired with Phenix Black Diamond 8'. All other gear I've been borrowing from my friend so I may have been using those. I've caught a total of 5 bluefin ranging from around 30 to 125 pounds (I barely count the 125 as mine as it was a handoff and I had tons of help) and 1 yellowfin.

      @@davidgarside8697 hey david, gotcha. For that trip I exclusively used the fathom 25 2 speed/black diamond (psw 809xhj 25-60) setup that i mentioned in the above comment. I caught 2 bluefin and 1 yellowfin on that trip ranging from maybe 30 to 40 pounds. I hope that helps and good luck on your trip in June!

    I currently have a Lexa 400 and a fathom 40NLD. I’m wanting to buy another setup. I’m currently on the fence of either going heavier than the fathom or lighter to get something that fits in between my Lexa 400 and the fathom. Any suggestions? Been looking at either a Shimano Trinidad 16NA for the light setup or for the heavy a Okuma Makaira. I’ve primary only fished rock cod in Cen Ca but this year I have my first 3 day trip planned out of San Diego. Thank for any advice.

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  Рік тому +1

      Hey Bryan, I had some opinions on this but I also asked Anthony about his thoughts and they more or less lined up. I'd consider getting something like the Penn Fathom 25 NLD 2 speed as opposed to the Trini 16. The 2 speed will come in clutch on those death spirals. The Fathom (or something similar) will serve you well for the 30 to 40 pound class fish.
      If and whenever you have the budget, the Makaira will be a great addition to your heavy setup.
      Apologies on the late response, but I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions and I'll get back to you faster next time.

      @@BenjieKimFishing thanks, your suggestion was the way I was also leaning. For my first extended trip on the pacific queen in May I’ll probably just rent my 100lb setup. Make sure I want to keep doing it before I drop 1500$ on quality setup. Does Anthony do rentals?

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  Рік тому +1

      @@bryan34wable yea that’s actually a really good call in my opinion. Anthony doesn’t do rentals but you can rent from any of the landings (not sure which one the PQ is out of) and they are cheap and it’s solid gear.

    • @williamhartsell6390
      @williamhartsell6390 11 місяців тому +1

      Decent rods for the money. You should be checking out rods based on what your using them for. Like I wouldn't use all graphite for throwing iron. But if I was vertical jigging a stiffer rod would be better for that style. Live bait you would want a softer tip.

    Rookie here you keep referring to fly line. What is that?

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Mickey, fly line is using only a hook and live bait (usually sardine) and letting the bait swim away from the boat while your reel is in free spool. No sinker or any other rigging technique. This is usually the easiest way to get bit as long as the fish are feeding near the surface. Hope that makes sense!

      @@BenjieKimFishing Hi Benjie. No worries. I went to Sav-On Tackle today, met Anthony Casulli, and it was well worth the drive from Long Beach. I went in for a big tuna rail rod trying to keep it under $300, with the right length and feel for someone who is 65yo and has a bad back. Anthony steered me toward just the right rod to match a reel I already owned, one of the new Penn Carnage III Boat Conventional West Coast 7 ft rail rods. Anthony took two rods in trade as well. Did you know Sav-On buys used rods? (In good condition, of course.) Sav-On also has the best selection of slow pitch and deep drop jigs around from what I've seen, and I picked up two.

      I can't disagree with you here on a personal level. I currently only have one offshore setup and I borrow the rest from friends whenever I get out there. I've always had at least 3 setups on my tuna trips and on a couple of occasions, only used one the entire time lol. With that said, most guys dedicated to this game have been building out their gear over a period of years, and it is nice to have options for multiple and unpredictable scenarios. Tight lines!
