Thanks for the good review. I'm going to order the drawer option, that is something that I'm missing and will use. I ordered a couple of the Tough System 2.0 6-compartment small part organizers, which was something else my current setup was lacking.
I also am now in the same frying pan. I bought the wheeled 2.0 tool box, XL box and 2 half (clear-top) bin organizers as opposed to the set of the wheeled, medium box and small box. I wanted maximum storage from the boxes and small organizers. The durability is there for what I wanted...but I have to unstack them to get to the bottom items. I was already planning to unstack them when putting them in back of the truck due to it being heavy and unsafe. At the worksite, I'm creating a large footprint as you stated. I'm with you, with what I know now...I would have went with the dolly looking set up. Thanks for your video. Very helpful.
Thanks so much for watching, it's really nice to hear that this actually helps someone! The money is painful, but it's worth it. Put the other ones up for sale, that got me some of the cash back anyway.
I went with the toughsystem because of the rack system work's perfectly in a high top or mid roof van, dewalt definitely ahead of the competition when it comes to racking.
It's July, been trying to make up my mind since Jan which to buy. 2 packout drawers was ¾" too tall for my service body, so tough system it is. This was a much better carrier video than others. Thank you.
The drawers are from the Toughsystem 1 which has the latch on the back. The other cases are from the Toughsystem 2 in which they eliminated the rear latch. There are similar rolling cases from the system 1 that also have the rear latch, but they are being phased out. Yet to see if DW comes out with a TS2 drawer case.
They’ve released the 2.0 drawers in Australia. Only the 2 drawers atm, 3 drawers wouldn’t be far behind though. Seems like a good build but will be getting it in a few weeks to test out. They have a lot to live up to if they hope to Compare to the packout boxes
Beforehand buying the Dewalt tough system 2.0 I did a lot of researching. The drawers do come with system 1 & system 2.0 fastener clips. They do both look identical except for the side clips. So, any online shopping thats selling the drawers needs to be contacted to make sure you get the drawers with the 2.0 clips or else they'll send you the cheaper clip version system 1. There are 2 DS carriers & the differences are the wheel colour gray or black, I got the black wheels which look more robust with the measurements on the side bars to make sure the singing arms are at the same height. the other wheels are gray & some of them do not have the measurements for the swing Arms. I'm unsure why this is. Could be a manufacturers choice. The tough system tote has not got the 2.0 clips but I've been told you can change the clips to 2.0! Not did that yet but I'll try it. Both systems 1 & 2.0 are compatible but 2.0 is far more robust & boxes are larger. There are clear lid organisers with small bins for your nails that fit into the dewalt nail belt pockets, just take the whole bin shove it into one of your dewalt nail belt pockets and off you go. The nail belts come with their own yellow plastic bins similar to the clear lid organiser bins, It all depends on the style of the dewalt nail belt you have that makes it all work. The nail belt pockets are massive and can be detached sat to the side or hung up so you can can connect different styles of pockets with different bins or ones with different tools. Some of the nail belt pockets come with carrying handles so you can set them up with gear and sit them to the side ready for when you want to grab them and attach them to your nail belt. It's the best & fattest system I've ever used, no more hunting around for a certain size of nail, its already in the bin & ready to be swapped out + you have the impact driver with your nailgun hanging on the belt with your othe tools + spare batteries clipped to it You do not want to climb back down to get to your van for stuff, no need, its all with you and your hands are free to climb or carry different loaded pockets. The harness with the 5 inch padded belt & all the different accessories that attach to the system is awesome for working in remote parts far from your van. The tough system 2.0 & the full harness nailbelt system is costly but its a time saver & in the long run actually saves you money & time when your set up to do particular jobs correctly. It'll save you hours of frustrated walks back to you van for stuff cause everything will be kept in your tough system & nail belt system. Use the Ds carrier to hang your nail pouches til you get to the job. Do a check list & you'll be good 👍 Sandwiches hot water flask biscuits, tools, fixings, batteries, radio, chargers, generator, ppe, off you go.
It doesn't look too difficult to drill some holes and install hooks that latch into the DS carrier on the back of the 2.0 boxes. You could even take the hook off the 1.0 boxes. Add a gasket for waterproofing and it seems like it would work to me.
Great review. I worked for Dewalt as a Tool Technician for 20 yrs so I am sorta a fan. I have their original mobile tool carrier that all three compartments slide open. I set it up for working on cars and home but it is limited. I have been looking for something else especially if it has drawers. Definitely don't want to have to unstack and your review helped me decide to get the dolly system of Dewalt. Drawers, drawers is the way to go especially for wrenches, screwdrivers, etc. Thanks, great video.
Bought the DS carrier instead of the wheeled box set a bit over a month ago. Then suddenly had to move out of my apartment and having that right at hand was a huge lifesaver.
Nice review, appreciate the insight and the demonstrations of how the systems work. Been debating 3-4 different brands and seems like all have pros and cons. Anyway, thanks!
Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated! There are so many choices in this space, and seems to be more every day. Let me know what decide!
Thank you for this review, this is exactly what I was looking for! I bought the exact same beginning setup and recently bought the 3-drawer case. I was debating on getting the cart carrier and another drawer, and you just helped me make my decision! I’m going with the cart carrier, two drawers, and small case. Thank you!
What I want Dewalt to make is rolling drawer system with a big drawer to hold large tools a medium size drawer than a large two drawer medium sized 2 drawer and a large 3 drawer and medium 3 drawer and small 3 drawer, if they come out with that the regular boxes will stay home and the drawer system comes for the ride
I agree with your assessment on Dewalt. I pretty much use all brands: Mil, Del, Rig. I started with Rig large tool boxes, then I added the Mil setup ($1,000). I do like Delwalt tool boxes, but there are a few annoying designs that I don’t like. Stuff like the one you mentioned about the lid not up. I bought a Dewalt large tote with wheel 1 month ago. I do like it as stand alone, but I want to add the Dewalt drawer. I prefer the compact size over the Mil drawer, which I think it is a bit heavy. But for functionality, I do the like Mil innovation more. Even simple stuff like lid staying up was well though. Right Mil Packout is really hard to beat.
It’s be great if they made the bottom cart on the original system and big drawer instead. Then you can always use it regardless of what’s stacked on top. All the other bins on tops I find I can still flip open enough to get stuff out if the cart handle is dropped down.
Thanks for the insight. I just bought the 3-piece packout set and am fairly happy with it, especially for the value, but the built in bottom box is a bit of a PITA for all the reasons you stated. This seems like something I'll have to consider further.
@christopherevensen4942 Thanks for watching. There's a new bottom roller box coming from milwaukee that makes it one big drawer so you don't have to unstack.
I work on my own cars alot and i live in a apartment so everytime i work on my cars i have to bring all my tools down in multiple trips anf its anooying so ima buy the bottom drawer with the wheel and then the 2 drawer boxes (one with 2 trays and one with 3 trays), 3 trays for sockets (¼ ⅜ and ½ sockeds) and then the 2 tray one for stuff like my wrenches pick tools pliers etc and then bottom for everything else i might need/bigger stuff. Wd40, oil, hammers pry bars etc. Planning on buying in black friday sale this year hopefully works for me, also adding the worktop thingy on top
I started with the drawers from both Milwaukee and DeWalt. I like DeWalt for it's more narrow form factor and rubber seal around the drawers. Milwaukee is wider and no seal around the drawers. I do know Milwaukee has a dolly as well but l haven't seen it yet. So far most of my pack out is Milwaukee.
I have 2 2-drawer boxes in my setup, both are 2.0 tough system. Neither has the locking back piece for my dewalt 2 wheeler. I just picked mine up this week because they were out of stock everywhere for the longest time.
It really irked me at 9.50 when you opened the top box and it hit the trolley handle. Makes me wonder whos heading these projects 🤷. Great review btw 👍
The system 1 has the latches on the rear to lock into the DS carrier. The system 2 boxes don’t. This applies to all system 1 & 2 boxes. I have no idea why DeWalt left these latches off of system 2. Hope this helps if it’s not too late. Lol. God bless!
Good review probably the most in depth one I've seen of this system. I bought the tool box and probably guna get the trolley and add to it all the time. Im not a tradesman but I work a lot on my bikes withots of specialist tools including general DIY. Since moving property to smaller place I had to get rid of my super large tool trolley I like how I can quickly assemble it and dissemble it to. Ive found the quality pretty good with the tool box alone for some pretty heavy tools in there and no issues with the weight on the handles 👍.
I have 3 dewalt 1st gen screw boxes and a lot of rigid boxes. For my company van I use these 2 brands are the only ones I found out of rigid, dewalt, milwaukee, klein, flex stack on more. So I'll keep my rigid and dewalt. They fit perfect on my shelves
I have the old Rigid system. They are just more simple and easy to stack and move. Those Dewalts seem like the latch will break . The drawers are a game changer on not having to unstack in customers home.
I almost got the Ridgid myself. We're all after the same thing, good storage at a "reasonable" price. Ridgid is probably the only fair price in the game. If they do drawers, could be big. However with HD so invested in selling Milwaukee now, I don't think that's likely. Thanks for watching!
@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop milwaukee missed the boat, to bulky. I'm actually looking to go to a Stanley that have 3 units that stack and you can access all without unstacking. Going in and out if a customers home you don't want to unstack everything on the floor..
I think a lighter system like the Festool systainers or Dewalt tstak/versastack boxes are a better fit for finish work. Packout/tough system boxes are just too big and heavy in my opinion. Festool probably have the best system with their sysport/mobile workshop but it's crazy expensive. I wish Dewalt would come up with the same system.
Fully agree. The festool/tanos style boxes are awesome, just as you said not cheap! I have a few for individual tools. Maybe someday there will be an easy affordable option.
@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop I swopped my 20 systainers for packout because of the drawers but by god they're big and heavy in comparison - if festool did deeper drawer sets I;d stick with them for sure.
I have the originals, I’m also a packout guy too, the packout does not fit in my utility service truck on the sides the dewalt fits fine, I left a door open and made a left turn coming out of the freeway causing boxes to fly out at 40mpH just a few scratches all good.
2.0 latches are the newer version. The older stuff has the older latches. I love my DS Carrier but that metal is no good on some job sites. Can easily scratch finished floors. So the DS450 is an advantage there. DS450 can also be easily fit in the extra cab of a truck (if the rear seat is folded up). Whereas the DS Carrier is not as versatile in regards to mobility fitment.
You say that Milwakee has a similar setup as the DS carrier? As in, if I want the bottom case, I don't need to unstack all boxes, I just take the bottom one out from the holding system?
@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop So there is the problem with Milwakee and all other systems (different from Dewalt one). I'm in the process of setting up a van as a mobile workshop, but if necesity arise, to be converted quickly back in a hauling van. So, no bolt on shelves inside, just something that cam be easly taken out. And this DS system checks all boxes. Thanks for the video and the quick reply, man!
Good Video! They lost me when they did not make 2.0 backward compatible with 1.0. I have 1.0 and still end up using my original Rigid system because my roll and lock will not close with the handle of the Dewaly system. I getting rid of all systems and going with Milwaukee Packout.
I just bought the ds carrier and bought the 2.0 boxes. I didn’t really know how it worked and was bummed when I found out the 2.0 have no latch to secure my boxes to the ds carrier. It’s only held by the handles which seem good but I’d hate to hit a bump on the road and one of my boxes fall out of my truck
I ran that same setup for a while, and my trailer rides like a brick. Never had one fall out. I did however have a 2.0 box come unlatched from the one below and fall off the stack. Not cool.
I have a total of 2 of those systems And one of the older ones previous model those drawers belongs to the older model but they fit and snap in to the new 2.0 That is the reason why they are not spring-loaded They were built for the previous model But both will work on The 2.0 I have a crazy amount of tools I do handyman and mechanic work Self-employed Some of The Times toting everything arold is a pain in the Rear But they help After you empty your wallet After all of the The best version of the tools and Boxes But it is what it is By the way if you haven't bought the new atomic series I suggest you run and do so because they are amazing
Excellent review! As soon as you took off the tote/basket off the DS ....BAM...thats what I need. Starting a mobile outboard service business and need a strong System to navigate rough terrain, ramps, stairs etc Was going to build a portable "Tough System" around a hand truck, plywood box with a removable tote, Tough System drawers etc. Thanks for the time to share your experience. Milwaukee Packout is nice...but Starting out flipping that kind of money isn't in my program
I found that the whole cart leans pretty far forward when it's full. It rocks back and forth actually, and feels very unstable. The folding arms themselves don't seem to be the problem in my case, it's the folding base.
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop Yeah mine rock too but the top arms have a noticeable lean and the other arms don't. I might just stick to a box with wheels though it's a pain to get to the bottom box.
Pretty sure you have to buy knew, but I would contact DeWalt directly to confirm. It took 6 months for me to get a warranty replacement handled with them.
The 1.0 and 2.0 mostly fit together. There are a couple things that don't cross over, like the open tote will sit on a 2.0, but a 2.0 won't sit on the open tote.
i tried all of them. milwaukee and flex big boxes don't have a top handle which is loading them in the van is a back injury waiting to happen. dewalt much lighter boxes and better economics. new ridgid i think is the best because the wheels are removable and can have more big boxes for the same wheels. tstack i like a lot but front latches are no good. doing residential work in occupied houses I'm using festool systainers for easy carrying through staircases and hallway.
nice review, the 1.0 boxes are better apart from the locks, the 2.0 boxes if we and you openen them will leave water running into the back of the box, so annoying.
I hadn't thought about water going in when the drawers are open. But you'd have to leave the drawer open, or I guess it would really have to be pouring right?
Milwaukee got a great advantage on this system dewalt came out first so they had to make a better one and they did it’s impossible for dewalt to make it better unless they completely redesign the boxes it was break when it came out but I’m sticking with tstak it’s much better than the toughsystem
@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop you should check it out they are smaller and not as wide but they are cheaper and the drawer units are what I use on a tstak trolley it’s the best system for me I keep all my tools in them they have deep boxes for saws and stuff easy to move around because they are smaller and lighter
Thanks for watching! There is that factor yes, but both companies do a lot of manufacturing in the USA. This is a great article on tools companies and where they're made. www.protoolreviews.com/what-tools-are-made-in-the-usa/
I’ve studied these systems and just got back from local Home Depot store from purchasing my first Toughsytem 2.0. Small for my Dewalt palm router kit. I did not see ANY reason to go with the Milwaukee over the Dewalt system. Also Milwaukee was twice as expensive for the same quality construction. Furthermore, your video is the first time I saw the drawers and I WANT ONE NOW! They are ingenious and very practical. Unfortunately Depot is completely out of stock. I agree the latches are too strong and too loud. you need hearing protection when you close them. Finally regarding your big bottom box - keep it. Kaizen sells a snug fitting insert for it. You can use it to STORE a lot of your taller tools at home (or your future tools) upright in it - with help from the Kaizen hard foam insert which are only 15 each and are a good looking black and yellow.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! My dewalt drawers are still on backorder, as so many things are these days. But they are awesome, so get em when you can!
I went with the Rigid. last year i pick it up for $100bucks! Hard to walk away from at the time Dewalt was around 170? Milwaukee was raping people, not an option. Now a year later i like the Dewalt Stacking cart thingy and they have drawers. Had i known then what i know now id run the set up this video is showing. Rigid can you please get off your thumbs and make some drawers at least. Theyre like one and done. Common Rigid!
This product family for all the brands is aggravating because it's still developing. You pick one manufacturer and the next week the other guys have something better!

Makita boxes are inter changeable with Festool systainers and are less than half the price. Makita has 4 sizes. Small, medium, large, extra large.
@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop I swopped my 20 systainers for packout because of the drawers but by god they're big and heavy in comparison - if festool did deeper drawer sets I;d stick with them for sure.
@@chrismartell6135 it's all about the drawers! I'm in the same boat, if there were systainers with bigger drawers that's where I'd be
Tstak with the drawers are the best I think I keep them on the trolley and can take what I need where I need it
Good review cheers mate
Thank you! Really appreciate you watching.
I have the originals, I’m also a packout guy too, the packout does not fit in my utility service truck on the sides the dewalt fits fine, I left a door open and made a left turn coming out of the freeway causing boxes to fly out at 40mpH just a few scratches all good.
Wow, impressive it survived that beating! Thanks for watching.
I assume the drawers have that to hold for more stability when open. Do the other add on boxes have it
Some boxes do, some don't. I'm told it's leftovers or add-on parts based on the age/generation of the tough system.
Botton box makes a great lunch box/ chair
Thank you for your video!
@@FPShkED Thank you for watching!
You say that Milwakee has a similar setup as the DS carrier? As in, if I want the bottom case, I don't need to unstack all boxes, I just take the bottom one out from the holding system?
@costinmarina not like the ds carrier no. The base roller box opens like a large drawer from the front. Then you can stack drawer units on top
Fit a few arms facing the other side, so you can stack a few boxes on the other side. Did it on my rack, works perfect.
That's a good idea, didn't realize you could do that!
@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop yeah, I removed the locking bar. Never using it anyway 😝
Hi mate, there are no holes on the front of the trolley, how did you install the arms without the holes?
@@ibby81ae just drill the hole, from the other side, so it’s on the perfect spot.
@pedrosmits thanks, do any of your arms have a slight tilt under load?
They do have a Drawer in the 2.0 version now. It's sweet
I got a set too. I still had latch issues very quickly. Disappointing for me, but I made DeWalt aware of my issues.
Good Video! They lost me when they did not make 2.0 backward compatible with 1.0. I have 1.0 and still end up using my original Rigid system because my roll and lock will not close with the handle of the Dewaly system. I getting rid of all systems and going with Milwaukee Packout.
Thanks so much for watching! And I've made the switch to Milwaukee. Painful for the wallet for sure, but I'm happy and not looking back.
How is 2.0 not backward compatible with 1.0?
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I have been watching the atomic stuff, but don't have any yet.
To your point on the locking tab not on all the boxes...all of the tough system 1.0 boxes had that locking tab, at least all the ones I had.
Thanks for watching! Yes you're correct. Carryover from last version. And now, lots more new stuff coming!
I would say it’s like that so you don’t pull it off while the draw is open or opening.
A cabinet rolling bottom would be sweet, like a Milwaukee PACKOUT Cabinet 48-22-8445 on wheels
There is some sweet new stuff coming soon!
Excellent review!
As soon as you took off the tote/basket off the DS ....BAM...thats what I need.
Starting a mobile outboard service business and need a strong System to navigate rough terrain, ramps, stairs etc
Was going to build a portable "Tough System" around a hand truck, plywood box with a removable tote, Tough System drawers etc.
Thanks for the time to share your experience.
Milwaukee Packout is nice...but Starting out flipping that kind of money isn't in my program
The hooks arent on the new tough system because the cart is intended to be discontinued iirc
Good to know, thanks!
They eliminated the spine lock on some boxes to gain volume new boxes 2.0 are a bit larger
Hmm, interesting. Thanks for the info, and thanks for watching!
Hey you know you can mix and match Dewalr and Milwaukee together, with some slight modifications, there are plenty of videos on UA-cam
I did NOT know that, I'm going to look for those videos now though!
Thank you.😊
Thank YOU for watching!
Can the open tote be stacked on top of on the non DS carrier?
Yes. It has he latches to snap into the lid below it
in your small organiser box, what are them little tubs you have?
Those come with that toolbox, or at least it did when I bought it.
i’m a dewalt fan, but i am sure jealous of the milwaukee carrying cases
I was so jealous I switched! I have a video coming soon on why and how it's going. Thanks for watching!
Hi mate do your top arms learn forward under load?
I found that the whole cart leans pretty far forward when it's full. It rocks back and forth actually, and feels very unstable. The folding arms themselves don't seem to be the problem in my case, it's the folding base.
@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop Yeah mine rock too but the top arms have a noticeable lean and the other arms don't. I might just stick to a box with wheels though it's a pain to get to the bottom box.
Do you know if a 1.0 top latch be up graded to a 2.0 latch? Or do I have to buy a whole new tool box?
Pretty sure you have to buy knew, but I would contact DeWalt directly to confirm. It took 6 months for me to get a warranty replacement handled with them.
@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop thanks for the reply. Not surprised.
The 1.0 and 2.0 mostly fit together. There are a couple things that don't cross over, like the open tote will sit on a 2.0, but a 2.0 won't sit on the open tote.
Are the drawers lockable?
They are not.
They are ip65
i tried all of them. milwaukee and flex big boxes don't have a top handle which is loading them in the van is a back injury waiting to happen. dewalt much lighter boxes and better economics. new ridgid i think is the best because the wheels are removable and can have more big boxes for the same wheels. tstack i like a lot but front latches are no good. doing residential work in occupied houses I'm using festool systainers for easy carrying through staircases and hallway.
I have a mix of systainers too. For me, there probably never will be a perfect system. It's a constant development. Thanks for wathcing!
I'm never getting boxes again, drawers save time and my back.
nice review, the 1.0 boxes are better apart from the locks, the 2.0 boxes if we and you openen them will leave water running into the back of the box, so annoying.
I hadn't thought about water going in when the drawers are open. But you'd have to leave the drawer open, or I guess it would really have to be pouring right?
@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop my appoligies i may have made it unclear, i mean on the actual 2.0 boxes not the draw system
tough build is going to blow them away next year , but milwaukee is no ahead of dewalt on that carrier
Milwaukee got a great advantage on this system dewalt came out first so they had to make a better one and they did it’s impossible for dewalt to make it better unless they completely redesign the boxes it was break when it came out but I’m sticking with tstak it’s much better than the toughsystem
I never had any of the tstak stuff. It's smaller right? Thanks for watching!
😃👍👏👏👏
Because the drawer is 1.0 and rest of your box is 2.0 so they don't have back lock.
Maybe because you'll be pulling on the drawers and don't want to pull the whole thing down.
You should go with Dewalt because they're American not Chinese like Milwaukee
Milwaukee hold my beer!
@@ChestnutRidgeWorkshop so what im hearing you say is Rigid is due for an upgrade. Lol🤞
W Polsce nie da się kupić szuflad 😏
We can't buy them here currently either. They've been on back order for a long time. Would you not be able to buy online when they're available again?
Just got the Milwaukee cases after i met my gf. The system just beat dewalt by miles in my eyes
I think so too. Still using all packout stuff myself. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Over time I bet the latches break. Too hard to close
You may be right. We'll find out! Thanks for watching.
Garbage
@dustingilders8207 well I've switched to packout, so.... thanks for watching!
