Based on our assessment and the family's perspective, it is believed that Jacob remained conscious when his vehicle plunged into the water. As the impact triggered the airbag and water began rushing through the broken front windshield, the side windows remained intact and could not be shattered nor could the doors be opened. In a desperate attempt to escape, Jacob swiftly maneuvered toward the broken rear window. However, he became entangled with the rear headrests, ultimately taking his last breath while halfway out of the vehicle. It is the shared belief that had Jacob possessed a Window Breaker to swiftly shatter a side window, he could have escaped within seconds instead of grappling with the challenge of traversing two rows of seats and exiting through the rear window. This poignant observation highlights the potential for a different outcome had the means for quick escape been readily available, leaving us to ponder the possibilities and the heartbreaking "what ifs." 💔 WINDOW BREAKERS SAVE LIVES! 😢 Are you prepared if your vehicle goes into the water, catches fire, or you need to rescue an infant or pet trapped in a hot car? It was so sad to see he could've made it out but didn't. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones. Thank you so much again Jared and everyone involved for helping to bring closure to his family ❤
How do you prepare yourselves mentally when you encounter vehicles with bodies in them? That to me, would be just absolutely heart breaking to try and deal with.
I was watching a recovery from the Adventures with purpose partners "Chaos Divers." They were recovering possible suicide that was days, possibly one week old. Not sure if it was considered a suicide or not, but when they found said vehicle, it wasn't anything but a shiny glare on sonar. No part of it resembled a vehicle whatsoever. In Jacob's case, he and his vehicle were under water for several weeks. That glare that Jacob's vehicle made resembled something new to being underwater for a short period of time. Sonar reflected off a smooth surface.
I always feel it’s an honour to take them to their families/last resting place. I talk to them and tell them what’s going on even if they can’t hear me. They are still people even when gone from their mortal shell. ❤
The "alright come on buddy" nearly brought me to tears, the fact that he still treats him like a person and not like an objective just goes to show the care. You are doing great work man.
My name is Jeremy i was one of the people there helping her look for Jacob. She still struggles til this day but she is a very strong individual. I didn't know Jacob personally but the connection he had with his family I felt that the whole time I spent looking for him with them. I visit with her often and enjoy time with them.
This is one of the most heart wrenching rescues of deceased ever. That sonar scan image was so tragic and shocking. I can't believe how such a dangerous road intersection can be allowed next to a waterway. Going by the damage to the car the impact into water must have been at very high speed.
It’s out in the Delta. It’s not in the city. Everyone who lives in that area makes a choice of how fast they drive on those levees. There is posted speed limits as well. This Delta is over 1100 miles of waterways in three counties. It empties into the Bay Area. Just think if it had been Tule fog as well. So sorry for the loss of this young man.
You can’t believe that intersection is allowed to be like that? The govt can’t save everyone from themselves - unfortunately he was intoxicated and had an accident. It’s no one’s fault but his own as hard as that is to say.
I would be haunted for a long time knowing my child died fighting for their life completely alone. But I would rather know thats how they died as opposed to not knowing at all. You guys are real living angels.
I from uk,I watch what you guys do and what a fantastic thing you do ,to find someone is truly missed by the the people who miss them so much. I know how they feel as my wife died 6 years ago and I miss her so much I know the the feeling of loss.I hope you guys get all the support you deserve well done 💖
Right, my best friend from 4 years old tell 19 years old found dead in a creek. We had drug issues then and his mom told me a tumor.... I don't believe it and won't while we talked daily and hanged out daily.... I know it wasn't a tumor I don't know which drug.... 4 years wondering and it's still killing me. Edit, he slip on a rock and was knocked out head down in a creek.
When you drown the fight is mere seconds once it starts. I drowned at age 13 and CPR was done to bring me back. It is a very peaceful way to die. It is not painful at all
My cousin drowned and was in the lake for about 3 days. At his funeral, only immediate family were given the open casket funeral and I can say he was completely unrecognizable. Knowing what I know on what happens to a human body after being underwater for an extended period of time, I commend you for doing this for the family. I can only imagine what he must have looked like and I hope you guys continue with your service no matter how difficult it must be at times. Thank you for your service ❤
I’m so sorry for your loss. It is obviously a tough decision to decide what truly happened for closure, or to have information undisclosed to allow less trauma. Either way, I hope your family is doing ok and again, I’m sorry for your loss.
Heartbreaking! I will never forget the sonar image and the desperate struggle for his last chance to reach the surface ultimately losing the battle. So close and yet so far.Truly gut wrenching. I will never forget it. The family by having an open casket let his memory live forever by accepting him in his final form loving him unconditionally for what he was and how he lost his life fighting to come back to his loved ones. Truly inspirational. May he rest in peace and his family find comfort in having him home again and at peace.
Knowing that Jared doesn’t usually work with the “fresh” ones, this will have an emotional impact on him especially, for a long time. Just the sudden coming face to face with Jacob when he went down to check the vehicle had to be startling and emotional. But in the midst of all that, Jared talking to him while removing him showed tremendous respect. Thank you for all you do for these victims and families.
First the sonar...I'm sobbing, and then Jared goes down... I'm sobbing...Jared goes to bring him up...what a gut punch. Jacob's mom, his girlfriend... Jesus... I can't even imagine. I've watched a number of these now and this is the saddest one yet.
It's truly a miracle they found him so quickly. Had it been another six months, Jacob wouldn't be there anymore - he'd've been swept away by the river.
I feel for his girlfriend. First to lose their baby and now to lose him. To be the only survivor of a little family of 3. I can't imagine the pain. Prayers to his girlfriend and family 🙏
55 year old man hear crying like a baby thank you for your compassion and the police compassion of a bad situation. Lord I ask you to bless this family with understanding and peace.
@@PROVOCATEURSKReally dude, you didn't have to comment hateful bullshit like that If you don't believe in God that's fine, but respect that some people do believe.
Sorry they did the absolute minimum I would expect from a decent human being - don’t get me wrong they did a good job - but it’s actually worrying that this doesn’t seem to be the standard anymore and one needs to commend the police (or anyone) for simply being descent…
why should you heap praise on someone for doing the things they're supposed to do? i have never understood this mindset. we're not dealing with kids here - we're talking about grown adults.
Two words of gratitude for the police officers on the scene: one for recognizing and respecting the experience and expertise of the diving team, but another more importantly, for handling Jacob with dignity. These are fine officers and exemplary humans.
I'm glad that this department actually cares about getting the remains out, unlike those who dealt with Dan's car and spilled anything that was left of him out into the river.
This brought me to TEARS. I lost my son to a drowning in 2017. He was only 15. That pain in the mom’s voice I know all too well. I had to wait 6 hours for sonar because the city didn’t have one readily available. The waiting, the hoping and praying. Jared what you do for people…You have no idea. You are a BLESSING to a lot of families. To mom: my heart aches for you. Sending you as many hugs as you can take. RIH sweet Jacob. 🙏🏾😢
The way Jared was talking to Jacob as he was freeing him. Was something special. Even the officers on the boat “watch his head “ they handled him with care & respect. R.I.P Jacob . You’re free now 💫
after 25 years working as a detective, I have worked on many Missing Persons reports. Jared you and your team have done some amazing things. So many missing person's reports go unsolved. With you passion and determination you have done what many agencies either can't do or don't do. No case goes unsolved until every single lead is exhausted. God bless you guys!
What are your thoughts on the back of his car looking as if it was rear ended? I only ask because you said you were a detective. It dosnt seem like it was a boat.I didn't see anything in the recovery that would have caused it.not to make something out of nothing ,its just bothering me.
@@NarrativeOfficial you can see that it bumps when they tried to recover it, many scene was cut from the video, so my opinion is, its just a bump from the recovery.
Jared, I'm a trauma therapist. As a result, I do a lot of work with people who are grieving traumatic deaths. Your approach with Jacob's mother was impeccable. I wanted to smack the lady who was with her, but I'm glad you were able to say what a devastated mom needed to hear. You have done wonders for this family.
I thought the same thing but didn’t wanna say anything. The lady was the aunt of Jacob..but when his mom was told he was doing everything to get out is DEVASTATING and a primal reaction to have..for her to say stop was heartless!!! As a mom, she was having the worst thing ever told to her in her life and she tells her to stop? That pissed me off as well.
It’s hard to process information under stress like this. That woman was helping her in the best way she could by trying to keep her calm. She was probably also close with him.
Despite the blur, seeing the body is just heart wrenching. The effort to escape, the loss of their daughter… he wanted to be there for her. He wanted to escape. It’s absolutely awful.
Seeing Jacob on the sonar was so heartbreaking, but when Jared dived down and came face to face with him, my heart sank. My sincere condolences go to all of Jacob's family and friends. R.I.P Jacob, you are in heaven with your little princess in your arms. No mother or father should ever have to bury their child or go through this heartbreak. Sending you all my love and condolences all the way from the United Kingdom. To Jared and the members of AWP, the police and other emergency services the recovery personnel and everyone involved in Jacob's case deserve all the respect, recognition and positive outcomes in their lives, for their valient efforts to find missing loved ones and bring them home to their families. It is such a wonderful thing you all do to bring the families the closure they need. Keep doing the amazing work.
Even though Jacob had passed - treating him with respect is the most comforting thing you could do for his family. This one had me in tears. As a mom of a young son, it hits hard because you know the pain his momma was feeling. You guys are amazing 💙
Nothing is more tragic than a parent losing their child before their time. I wish nothing but love and happiness for the Vanzant family in the wake of this tragedy.
This hit home for me too. I have a 9 year old son. I can’t imagine the grief that the mom is enduring. I’ll keep the family and search teams in my prayers. Thank you guys (and possibly gals) for your service.
That is the first thing I asked about how my mom died. I can’t imagine the pain this mom is having, knowing her baby fought that hard to live. We can only hope it was fast. R.I.P. Jacob
"Come on buddy. Lets get you out of here ok?" -- I hope his mom never watches that part of the footage (I definitely couldnt) but I hope someone shared with her how her son was given so much care and respect in those moments of recovery. Absolutely heartbreaking. My heart goes out to his family and so much respect and gratitude to Jared for the work that he does.❤
Awesome work, I can't put in words as I watched this Recovery, how I feel. Praying for you AWP for the work you do! I cried thru this one too. RIP Jacob!🙏🙏🙏 All the way from South Carolina. How can I support what you do? Plz let me know. I love you all, God bless you for what you do!!! Prayers for the family and friends!!!
I could feel this moms heartbreak when he called her and said " i have your son" . Her life has forever changed and my heart goes out to her and the family. This is precious work that you all do. And i think the way you inform the famalies is with tact, respect and a lot of compassion. Bless yóu all ❤
“Oh, there he is” let the next lifetime of trauma peruse. I couldn’t imagine. I have infinite respect for these men and what they do. Truly incredible.
I am overwhelmed by your courage to remove him from the vehicle. What a honor to be able to do that. My heart breaks for his mother. He looked like an amazing son. 😢
@Cathy Swaim it is indeed the hardest of all rescue jobs. Being under water all alone, searching - and finding - people who have passed on, not only requires a lot of focus and energy during the intervention, but a whole lot of mental work afterwards as well. And it doesn't get easier or ever becomes a routine. Every intervention is personal and different. As a rescue diver, I can still see all of them when I close my eyes. I am fortunate enough to have one memory of a live one who went on to pass on several years later of old age instead of under his tractor that had rolled over into a pond... With the work Jared does, it is virtually impossible for him to find such consoling experiences, so he deserves every credit and praise for doing what he does. We can only hope that he finds solace in the peace he creates in people's hearts and that he has a solid coping mechanism in place...
This episode has wrecked me😭 the pain in his mother's voice when she was told he fought to get out. 💔 Rest now Jacob. I love how respectful Jared was when bringing Jacob home. Talking to him and still treating him like a person.
I must say this is the 1st episode i,ve watched that made me cry .. when jarod went out and got him and secured him around himself an bought him in heartbreaking ...hats off to jared XOXO
I completely understand everybody's emotion and sympathy with the family I don't think that any of you could understand or really take into consideration what this does to Jared he is the one that has to live with that process and if anybody's going to pray for anybody pray for him everybody else lives with his words but he has to live with his actions heroic as they may be I think knowing and doing are two completely different things I can't even fathom for one second what he must feel being so selfless and what that selflessness cost him
same. I saw her shaking and heard her voice and my heart broke. I cant even for a second imagine the pain living this. You live the pain of the missing him.. and re live the pain of grief finding him. God bless this family.
I was thinking about this too. It makes you wonder if there are other missing people in those cars, if so my heart breaks for them and their families as well. I feel thankful living in a state inland because most of the waterways around CO are far from the rode. I also cannot believe how that entrance didn't have a gate or cameras. I think the city should take all those cars out as well as installing the proper safety measures including cameras to make sure that if someone does go into the water they are quickly found. I hope his mother is doing okay, this is so heartbreaking
It is very obvious that this area has been a trouble spot for decades, also, it could have been a ditching ground for insurance fraud. The easy access would have made it a likely choice.
This was the most tragic recovery I've seen. He was so close to getting out. Thank you Jared, and your team, for all that you do. The cops were so respectful of Jacob it was much appreciated.
I’ve been following AWP for a long time, and this one was by far the most humbling and heartbreaking one. I always think I’d be fine seeing a body, but this one changed that perspective. The thought of diving into murky water and coming face to face with Jacob… Jared, you are truly a blessing.
We all are, once it comes down to it, just meat. I just hope that his girlfriend - Celestial Riate - is All Right (OK) as well. He fought to see her safe. It's down to all of us to make it happen.
As a former marine, my uncle once volunteered to search a local lake for a missing person. No one expected to find anything, it's only 30 feet at its deepest, less than 3 miles around. He found him. It destroyed my Vietnam vet uncle even further. I'm so grateful to you all and SO sorry to his loved ones. ❤
Jared did such a wonderful job consoling Jacob's Mom. His kindness to a near stranger in her worst moments was so touching. She will grieve for her son forever but at least she knows he did not choose to end his life and tried to escape. The not knowing if he was alive would be worse than knowing how he died. Kudos to the police for the respect they showed in recovering Jacob as well. Excellent job everyone! The still sonar image of Jacob trapped in and out of the car should be used as a Don't Drink and Drive promotion.
Honestly, yes, if the family says it's okay to use the sonar image. If common sense won't stop people from drunk driving, then maybe fear will. It's really such a shame because this was 100% avoidable. He could've not drove, or asked someone else to drive him, or he could've not drank. Not only did he lose everything because of a stupid mistake, but his actions have caused irreversible damage to his family and friends. Ah, but hindsight is always 20/20.
Honestly, you are so brave for going down there knowing a body was hanging out of it. I can’t even imagine how scary and heartbreaking it would be to swim up to that.
Thank all of you so much for this heroic rescue and how competent you were in handling his body. I know it was hard to do but oh so needed to preserve as best as possible. I am still so proud of you Jared.
This one has broken my heart like none before . To see the image of that boy half way out of the vehicle , knowing how close he came to escaping and how hard he fought was truly devastating. I pray the family can start to heal and find some sort of closure. Thank you to Jared and all of the team for finding this young man. 🙏🏻
The compassion and care they take while removing the people and vehicles is amazing. What they do, for free, to help families find their loved ones is so kind. It must be hard on everyone in the crew to see these people in their cars knowing what their last moments were like. Thank you for bringing answers to so many families and returning their loved ones back to them.
I’m 23 years old and this one broke me because he tried to escape and now he’s home. So sad. Your professionalism Jared is amazing and just the love you have for bringing answers to families is amazing. Thank you for doing what you do! RIP JACOB
Johnnie , as a mom and grandma watching this was heartbreaking . Young people often don’t think about consequences to their actions . Im glad this video touched you so deeply . Not long ago I saw a keychain that said “ Don’t do stupid sh*t Love mom “ Stay safe and be an advocate of safety for your friends .
I'd bet money he was injured, definitely disoriented since the airbags went off (I've been in a car crash that set mine off, and let me tell you, it took me a solid fifteen seconds to regain my bearings). The fact he got as far as he did is impressive. I wonder if he had any leg or spinal injures that interfered with him getting out.
Incredible work, Jared! I'm a 30 yr law enforcement veteran and I'm always blown away by the way you treat the families with such respect. It's a bitter sweet thing that you have had so much experience with death notifications. 23 families have been saved lifetimes of torment not knowing. Keep up the awesome work. I also. HATE to see the way some officers treat you guys. Way to stand up to them! You never let them discourage you!
One of the most professional PD’s I have seen, empathetic and sympathetic regardless of wether he could feel anything or not. Thank you guys for all that you do.
The cops here seemed like they just wanted to team up and help in any way they could, a big change from the norm, they usually dictate and do as they like.
This PD did it right. Let the full time professionals handle the extraction of Jacob in a compassionate and correct way. Don't make the family wait longer for "your dive team" to arrive and hopefully manage the situation correctly and in a respectful way. Too many get into turf issues and become rude to the voluntary dive team that did what the PD couldn't do. Kudos to this PD and to Jared and his team for bringing Jacob home. I lost my daughter at 24 years old ten years ago. The loss and pain never leaves you, there is no closure until you meet again in the after life. Knowing the how and why does help with managing the loss though. RIP to this young man and hopefully his memory will console his parents and family.
i live in oakdale (209) same area code as stockton. i can honestly say stockton PD have it BAD. that area is known for gang violence and horrific street violence those officers see some of the worst out of all the PD's in our area and every single cop who works for stockton can expect to have hands on a body still warm or barely cold by the end of their first year. these men know death. they've seen their share of crying mothers and the compassion they showed here is all the more proof how hard that PD has it.
I've watched several of these recoveries but this one hit me the hardest like others have said. To see that he almost made it out was heartbreaking. Thanks to the team for all their hard work and dedication.
As someone who works in the medical field, thank you for not lying or sugar coating to the mom. 💜🙏🏽 thank you to this channel for what you do for these families
I have never been in the situation of heaving to break such news to anyone, and I kept being shocked by how he put it. But then I'd think, what would be a better way to say it, and (at least for me) there honestly isn't. It's just the message that's horrible but it needs to be said, and by beating around the bush you only drag it out. I admire them for how they time after time deal with the close ones. I can imagine that's not something you'll ever completely get used to.
My mother drowned when I was 15 yrs old. The things you and your crew do, the compassion & understanding you show the families you help. Thank you for what y’all do
My condolences for the loss of your Mother. 💔 J lost my Mommy when I was only 5. Barely remember here only knowing that she was ALWAYS so loving & kind! Telling my so-called “father” to not hit us. To stop yelling at us when we were little. 😔 I miss her so very much & til’ this very day I still am the only one that really visits her grave & it still doesn’t have a headstone. 💔 This “former Father” doesn’t care to buy one. He doesn’t want to talk to me either. Calling me retarded, stupid, scum of earth, etc. Because I’m now disabled from a drunk driver that hit my own family’s van & gave me epilepsy. I still saved lives after that being a graduate w/ academic honors in medical field. I helped anyone in vehicle accidents. Also in hospital J saved a man’s life when a violent patient punched him on his head & gave him a large contusion on his right temporal lobe. He couldn’t stay awake! Tried knocking on nurses windows telling them to send patient to ER STAT; that patient is losing consciousness & he’s no longer coherent. They yelled at me. Telling me to shut up & leave them alone. I had to take care of him w/ ice & a washcloth. Trying to make do w/ what was available. Told them I’ll report them when I’ll be sent home. I helped many of patients there including the M.A’s. The patients started to believe in life and the M.A’s wanted to hire me. The psychologist didn’t understand why I was there and said he was sending me home. I said Apparently God sent me here for a reason. To help others. I lost 4 lbs. being there for 3 days. I’d starved because they’d not given me insulin. (Being type 1 diabetic!) I couldn’t eat. I only drank water & my glucose levels were really high!! They neglected to give me insulin! Even refused to give me long acting insulin necessary for type 1 diabetics. I said I’d report them and each day I awoke I’d go and help the individual w/ the injury on his skull. He was getting worse. I was having to go home but he was hard to understand because of his surgery 2x’s in past from lung cancer from smoking. Had hole in his throat. I still helped him w/ injury. Kept him awake and helped him w/ his injury. I told him to stay conscious and told him I must leave now but that I promise I’m going to have him sent to the ER. That I will report the staff that did us all wrong as well. To continue to believe in God and pray. He thanked me and hugged me. The other patients I had said goodbye to I hugged each of them and they were all crying begging me not to go. I had tears in my eyes. Telling them to be strong and remember what I sung to them about God. To believe that Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and that God is with you always. Pray and hold your head up! That I love them! Be strong! Even the Medical Staff I helped out were sad to see me go. I hugged them all. Told them I’ll think about coming back to work there. (I don’t know…my grandma & Uncle died at that hospital.) It’s a bad hospital. As you can tell. I will have to make changes to their treatment of patients and medical care demand they make changes! Which Will get me fired. Lol. Anyhow beautiful work that is done…it brought me to tears!!! I am glad they took care of recovering so many people and Jacob’s body as well. I was in tears. Hard to watch this. At least there is closure. He’s always going to be visiting his loved ones and always watching from Heaven above. 🥲🙏🕊️🤍
This was one of the hardest episodes to watch. He tried so hard to get back to his family. RIP Jacob and thank you AWP for bringing this boy home to his mama ❤️
Wow, that is an emotional rollercoaster... As a parent, I'm glad they got to find out and not wonder for the rest of their lives... Seeing that he almost made it out of the car, helpless and alone... Heartbreaking... The officer saying to "watch his head", mad respect for him and not just calling it another dead body, but taking care of some ones kid.
I am glad as well, Family members have gone through something similar, My brother in laws sister went down in a plane in alaska and it took like 30 years to find her because it was remote and in the middle of nowhere they nearly didnt find her. So I know what its like to go through it.
To see that he almost made it out,is just heartbreaking.Jacob’s mom and sister, and girlfriend, must be devastated,to see him like that.Thankyou for all of your care and compassion,in bringing Jacob home.
I’m 56 years old now but I drowned in a river but survived as I was rescued. That said I can tell you, it was peaceful. No pain other than the first few second breathing in water and panicking, then a wave of peace came over me. If I would have died I know I was at peace with it.
That is very peaceful to know. I have always heard drowning was one of the most painful and worst ways to go, so it’s peaceful knowing those we’ve lost to drowning didn’t suffer till the very end 💔
I would’ve been terrified even tho it’s natural that he would be somewhat decomposed. Things like this are just heart wrenching… I’m sure it was shocking coming across that all of a sudden tho.
I’m bawling my eyes out. The compassion and respect from Jared “let’s get you out of here buddy”, the police officers “WATCH HIS HEAD! Watch his head”, the heartbreak for his mom. I lost my dad back in ‘91 when the coast guests ice breaker ran over his tug boat. His 2 crew died instantly, my dad drowned. I often wonder if he was conscious and knew what was happening. My doctor (also the local coroner) told me he wasn’t but I’ve never been sure if he just told me what would make it easier for me. My dad’s biggest fear was to drown. RIP Jacob ❤ Much internet love to mom and his family ❤ RIP dad ❤
Oh my gosh the fact that you said that it was his biggest fear .. and he passed that way made me really sad. My father actually has that same fear... I don’t know how to even think of that.. I’m so sorry.
If this serves of something. People who have drowned but were brought back to life say that after the first 5-10 seconds of panic/pain a sense of peace fills you and you stop feeling like you're drowning and just feel calm. So despite it being such a tragic passing he probably didn't suffer in his last seconds.
I wonder if the impact injured him, and that's why he was unable to escape. Jared was able to get him out with relative ease - granted, that's after months of Jacob being underwater, so it might've been easier too. Still, it's much more tragic due to how close he was to getting out.
I cant agree more, even after they secured Jacob in the bag, they still brought him as gently as possible into the sheriffs bought, even stating, "watch his head" during the slow drop into the boat. I'm always concerned how each states cops are but massive respect to these cops here.
Sending my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Jacob’s family and friends. Not only did this family lose their son, they lost a precious baby girl as well. I pray that they both may Rest In Peace. Thank you Jared and AWP for finding him and bringing him home. You handled this very delicately and, as a parent, I’m appreciative of the efforts you put forth. May God continue to bless you and keep you safe as you continue your search for lost loved ones. Also thank you to the sheriff’s department for the manner in which they handled Jacob as he was brought out of the water. They treated him with a great deal of dignity and respect. Also, the tow company, the excavator company, and the ferry driver need to be mentioned as well. Above and beyond.Thank you and God bless you all for your service, but also for the professional way this very tragic situation was handled.
You all are the very best of people bringing answers to absolutely devastated families who have NOT had answers for their loved one’s disappearance. Thank you for doing this and helping these dear people have some closure!
Thank you for the work you are doing for these families. My uncle was found underwater after being missing for 17 years. He was off a boat ramp. He wasn’t found until the reservoir was lowered for seeding. It took over 17 years for my grandparents and my father to get their own answers.
Jared, I appreciate your sensitivity and professionalism in handling the resolution of this terrible and heartbreaking accident. I have to say I was shocked by the sonar image, and it must have been incredibly emotional for you too. I feel so much for this family, and appreciate that, while respectful, you didn't hold anything back from them. At least they could begin processing the truth. God rest his soul💔
This was a tough one to watch. As a mother as well, thank you Jared for your gentle way of handling this recovery 😢 The ppl picture of him sitting leaning on a wall? Is how I wish to think he is and at peace. I agree this was a pure and sad accident. He tried💔
He's with his daughter now, and after spending eight and a half years with his girlfriend, I doubt he'd let something like death stop him from being by her side, even if she can't see him anymore.
The pure care and compassion from the team and the PD is amazing. Thank you for understanding that no matter what the state is, he is still a person, he is someone’s son, someone’s life partner and deserves to be treated with nothing but respect. My close friend was murdered and left in her car for a week (not a drowning) and I can only hope and pray that she was treated with this amount of respect when she was found. Keep doing what you guys are doing, you’re amazing people and giving answers to these families is so so important. You all said it best, you will never get closure, there is no such thing, but you can get answers and that helps more than anyone would ever know.
I honestly don’t think he was trying to get out. I feel like with an impact like that he was dead or at least unconscious from the wreck and his body was trying to float out of there as it decomposed and became buoyant.
@@jj3449no. Doesnt work like that. And w 1 arm up and the other down...he was trying to get out. Whatever he was snagged on from the waist down held him in place. He died in mid swimming stroke. And that's the saddest thing I think I've ever seen.
You really just have to set your mind in work mode but I can promise you after the work is done he feels it hit then. Always did for me when I was working at assisted livings
If anyone who considers driving drunk could witness Jacob's mother's anguish, and know how this affects loved ones, surely they'd think twice. This story is indeed haunting, and many thanks to AWP and to Jacob's family for allowing this series to be shown in all of its harsh tragedy.
Agreed. Stop drunk driving. He was a young man, grew up with being told that in high school, but still made poor decisions. May god give his family the strength to overcome this news.
@@neuroleptic2563 Apparently when he went to get his girlfriend and himself food he drunk 3 to 4 drinks of I think "long Island iced teas?" as told by the staff of the establishment
What’s sad is there are will always be idiots who think they are invincible drunk. And this story sadly shows the vulnerability of everyone drunk or sober.
I was doing okay until Jared started speaking to Jacob. "Let's get you out of here, okay?" The compassion and empathy you have for not only the families, but also the souls that have been lost... Thank you for everything you do, and for inspiring so many of us to pay more attention to vehicle and water safety. Thank you for bringing this family answers.
I could never do what Jared and the rest of AWP do, but I have the utmost respect for their work. Bringing closure to the survivors, healing broken souls, and bringing lost loved ones home to rest in peace instead of being left alone forever is a higher calling.
"That is Jacob... [...] he almost made it." If that does not get you to pay extreme attention, nothing will. He deserved better than this. His girlfriend deserved better than this. This entire thing is just .... tragic.
My heart broke when he delivered the news to his mother. The pause... that's when I suddenly stifled a sob... choked back tears for the rest of the video. That poor momma, and his partner with her tragic losses as well. Hold your loved ones tighter and be present with them, less distraced. Be in the moment and be grateful. We truly never know.
I really appreciate how Jared was speaking to Jacob as he was bringing him up and the officers respecting the body saying to take care of the head and so on. Shows the humanity in them and gives us hope that even if not breathing, these guys gave the departed soul the respect he deserves...
I've answered that call before. My brother and two of his friends were speeding down a country road. They lost control and went tumbling through the woods. A tree split the car in half; Which ejected one of our friends on impact. Our friend miraculously survived after a week long coma. My brother and our other friend died instantly. The accident happened the night before my birthday. I woke up to a call that my brother was identified as one of the passengers. He was 25
Jarod was so kind when he went to retrieve Jacob. I almost busted out crying when he was talking to Jacob encouraging him to come out of the car. And then when the officers were so careful taking him out of the water and the one officer said, watch his head a couple times....OMG... Someone else said this but I am going to reiterate, the level of compassion I saw in this video is truly unprecedented for me. It was beautiful. I've truly never seen anything like it. Absolutely heartwarming and absolutely heartbreaking for his mother and family. I'm so sorry for your loss. So grateful that those men gave him dignity in his death. Rest in Peace Angel boy.
This was seriously the most devastating episode of these rescues. Know the baby is with the father. This is so heartbreaking for those left behind. The weight and memories this team must deal with, I surely hope they also seek help with all of its complexities.
I'm spiritual and feel they are together. I think after it happened there was regret and sadness but I believe he's embraced his fate and it has a lot to do w their child. I hear that passing over doesn't void one from feelings esp about how it happened. It doesn't make it less tragic but I know energy doesn't die, it's just transferred somewhere else. Along with all the people we LOVE in every lifetime. Love is the most powerful thing, it keeps us connected thanks to Source.
I'm completely addicted to your videos. I have been binge watching your solved cases. Your team is such a blessing to the family and friends of those missing and especially found. I wish I was financially able to help. I would if I could. Jacob's video with him having tried to escape, was so heart wrenching. When the image appeared of his body outside the vehicle like that, I thought at first, it couldn't be real. I hope that this video will stop someone from drinking and driving. I agree with all the comments about how genuine and respectful your team and law enforcement are to the lost loved ones. Thank you all for what you do.
This video brought memories rushing back of when my brother drowned and was pulled out 2 hrs later. I’m glad to know that Jared told the mom to not watch because I regret watching my brother who was 30 at the time be pulled out. It’s an image you will never forget and one you wish you could have never seen. Thank you to all that did this for this young man and his family. May Jacob be finally at peace and is family start the journey of healing.
That's right. I was a kid at the time, I saw this man pulled from the water. I'm 62 now and remember every detail of that day of what a body looks like coming out the water.
Beautifully said. Also I’m so sorry at the loss of your brother. I cannot imagine the sights you saw of the that sad day. I hope you have all the support you deserve ❤
Oh, he was so close to getting out. Thank you for the respect you showed him and kudos to the police for doing the same. If ever there was a reason for not drinking and driving, this is it.
I cannot easily express the roller-coaster of emotions I felt when Jacob was visible on sonar. Incredible passion and respect from the AWP team and Sheriff's Office.
Watching it a second time the first glimpse of his arm and head becomes even more obvious at 9:19 before the extremely clear shot a few moments later. I literally gasped out loud and felt like I’d fallen from a height when I recognised the shape. I’m so glad he’s home at last and can rest.
This is an award winning documentary. My sincerest condolences to his mother and his entire family. I've been on an emotional rollercoaster watching this. I literally sat and cried at the end and its still on my mind at the end of my day. You and your team should be commended for all the hard work, dedication and compassion you you give. Not only to the family but, to the family you recover.
Felt the same and bring me up tears but also I'm 100% agree with you, it' so beautiful for her mother and family to receive an answer so they try to relieve their pain. RIP Jacob.
This funding of Jacob brought me to tears. Knowing that he’s finally at rest, but knowing he was fighting to get out. My momma heart breaks for this family. Sending love and prayers. 🙏
The respect both Jared and the PD showed in recovering Jacob was remarkable. They treated his remains as though they were recovering a loved one of their own. Such a sad case. People need to stop drinking/driving. Had he been able to get one more good breath, it’s highly possible he’d have escaped. Bless his spirit and his family. 😢
ANYBODY COULD RUN OFF THAT ROAD INTO THE LAKE EVEN SOBER. ONE MOMENT OF LOOKING AWAY ESPECIALLY IF YOU DON'T KNOW THAT AREA OR EVEN IF YOU DO. AS MANY CARS AS JAROD FOUND THE CITY OR STATE MOST DEFINITELY NEEN TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT ROAD.
This is the one that made me cry the hardest! Only just recently come across your videos, and absolutely amazed at your dedication and compassion in returning these loved ones to their family! 😢
This one is heartwrenching. To know, he was so close to being safe, just hurts. Praying for his family and loved ones. This one is gonna stick with me forever. Thank you for all you do, AWP.
It’s always nice to see everyone work together, locals and non-locals alike, for the greater good. No pissing match, no jockeying for the attention, just pure teamwork to bring that boy home to his family.
I have watched you for years. I’ve been a member for a little over a year now and I have got to say that this recovery has been the one that’s affected me emotionally, the most. I was crying for you, Jacob’s mom and family, and for all the those whose loved ones haven’t been found yet. I cannot imagine seeing the sonar with him trapped under the car. You are such a compassionate person and your caring for others’ loved ones is endearing and inspiring. The complete trust his mom gave you is a testament to your heart and soul. It was such a privilege she bestowed on you. Thank goodness you are doing this work Jared. I am just so in awe of you. Thank you. I really hope that you have someone who you can talk to about these kind of situations. You also need to care for yourself. I only say this out of caring for you. ❤❤
This one was a tough watch. The tears are flowing. Extremely well put together. It showed sincerity and compassion. No overly hyped drama. No playing to the camera.
The way everyone treated this recovery was amazing the respect that the officers gave the family and AWP was truly amazing, especially the officers saying “watch his head” was like they were taking care of a loved one of their own ❤ rest in peace Jacob 🕊️
This was simply beautiful. The level of compassion they had for Jacob was admirable. They treated him, AWP and the family with kindness and thus preserved Jacob's dignity.
Man this episode was so heartbreaking to watch. Seeing the digital image of jacob trying to escape was heart wrenching . I applaud you guys for helping each and everyone of these families to find an answer and hopefully closure as well for their lost loved ones. Thank you for doing what you do and don’t ever stop. We all need people like you guys. ❤❤Rest in peace Jacob. ❤
My late husband died of suicide in Rocky Mountain National Park. Hikers found him, and disrespected his remains, as they found him 45 minutes after he jumped to his death. They took pictures and sent them to their friends and video calling him a loser. The park rangers and FBI told me days later during the investigation. No charges or harshness was given to those animals who thought it was funny and hurt our family. Dealing with FBI since it was on federal land they were not kind to us neither were rangers, the only kind persons involved was the reporters and the law enforcement of Fort Collins. Thank you AWP for your thoughtfulness and comforting compassion for the victim and his familyies.
I will never understand why people do these things. I would think it’s not the normal response. If I were a hiker I would understand the dangers and sadness regardless. My condolences to you.
This poignant observation highlights the potential for a different outcome had the means for quick escape been readily available, leaving us to ponder the possibilities and the heartbreaking "what ifs."

Compartmentalization and downtime. Be grateful for every moment you have and those who choose to be a part of this beautiful life with you.
Thank you for everything you do!!
When the policeman said watch his head. The compassion was beautiful. Thank you
That's the level of respect everyone should have to human bodies and yeah, that sheriff should be very proud of his officers.
I always feel it’s an honour to take them to their families/last resting place. I talk to them and tell them what’s going on even if they can’t hear me. They are still people even when gone from their mortal shell. ❤

This is one of the most heart wrenching rescues of deceased ever. That sonar scan image was so tragic and shocking. I can't believe how such a dangerous road intersection can be allowed next to a waterway. Going by the damage to the car the impact into water must have been at very high speed.
You took all the words in your post out of my mouth!!! Sad tragedy that could of been prevented
Being so close to escape.. Knowing..
You can’t believe that intersection is allowed to be like that? The govt can’t save everyone from themselves - unfortunately he was intoxicated and had an accident. It’s no one’s fault but his own as hard as that is to say.
The levee system in California is like that unfortunately. This is a problem throughout the Central Valley.
That scan is so haunting I don’t have words for it. That’s horrifying.
So horrifying it chills to the bone

My cousin drowned and was in the lake for about 3 days. At his funeral, only immediate family were given the open casket funeral and I can say he was completely unrecognizable. Heartbreaking! I will never forget the sonar image and the desperate struggle for his last chance to reach the surface ultimately losing the battle. So close and yet so far.Truly gut wrenching. Yes I agree 1000% they didn't just see it as a body but a person who moved into the next phase where ever we go after this life.
Sorry they did the absolute minimum I would expect from a decent human being - don’t get me wrong they did a good job - but it’s actually worrying that this doesn’t seem to be the standard anymore and one needs to commend the police (or anyone) for simply being descent…
@4legs4paws55 you sound miserable. honestly, why do you have to be so negative?
They were great.
why should you heap praise on someone for doing the things they're supposed to do? i have never understood this mindset. we're not dealing with kids here - we're talking about grown adults.
Two words of gratitude for the police officers on the scene: one for recognizing and respecting the experience and expertise of the diving team, but another more importantly, for handling Jacob with dignity. These are fine officers and exemplary humans.
Yes so much Respect as they where picking him up. Loved to See such care
Unlike that other department that had to issue and apology for how the detective acted… all agencies should know and respect him more

My heart dropped... it's terrifying
😊thanks for sharing this great job 👏 😊
This was the most tragic recovery I've seen. He was so close to getting out. Thank you Jared, and your team, for all that you do. The cops were so respectful of Jacob it was much appreciated.
So close, he just ran out of time. So tragic and sad.
30 seconds to 120. Not much time.. based on impact. I'm guessing he wasn't too sure about his whereabouts at first. Truly tragic..
Same. To think there were 15 cars inside that river is trying disturbing. How many people must have gone in the same way, that road is so dangerous.
@@oAgL214mostly discarded ones, dear.
The way Jared said “oh Jacob” made my heart hurt. RIP Jacob and I’m sorry for your loss to the family.
Very sad
The pain I felt when I heard the mother yelling when jacobs body floated up, and hearing her say “my baby”.
Jared you handled that situation beautifully with his mom. As a mom, I thank you!
Thank all of you so much for this heroic rescue and how competent you were in handling his body. I know it was hard to do but oh so needed to preserve as best as possible. I am still so proud of you Jared.
RIP Jacob, the comfort of knowing he is now holding his baby girl in his arms and they arent alone is a blessing. 😢

Yesss I thought this same thing ❤❤ about Jacob being w his baby
As the mother of a son, hearing her say “my poor baby” broke my heart - Wishing her heart and soul peace 😞♥️
Not long ago I saw a keychain that said “ Don’t do stupid sh*t Love mom “

@@fartsniffer5043he was in the backseats halfway out the rear window, defo wasn’t on impact, sadly

Thank you for being one of the good ones. Detective Matt Thornton would definitely approve!! ❤
One of the most professional PD’s I have seen, empathetic and sympathetic regardless of wether he could feel anything or not.
Thank you guys for all that you do.
Literally their job
@monkeytennis8861 No, it's not, but I'm sure he would agree with you anyways. Because he's obviously good at his job.
Thank you for what y’all do
Thank you. My condolances. Losing your mother is difficult; but I believe it is harder when we're young.

Definitely. Seeing his mom cry hurt me so bad
I was glad to see that from the police as well. Very respectful and helpful. Not all cases are like that. These were true professionals.
You may have been but I bet your loved ones wouldn’t be.
glad you are with us

I can't imagine the shock of getting to the car and suddenly seeing Jacob. The sonar image of him was mindblowing.
I would’ve been terrified even tho it’s natural that he would be somewhat decomposed. Things like this are just heart wrenching… I’m sure it was shocking coming across that all of a sudden tho.
Parents worst nightmare is NOT KNOWING what happened to their missing child. I'm glad you guys were able to bring him home. Well done.
The way his body just floated to the service like FREEDOM everything means something. Thanks for your work man.
RIP Jacob ❤
Much internet love to mom and his family ❤
RIP dad ❤
Oh my gosh the fact that you said that it was his biggest fear .. and he passed that way made me really sad. My father actually has that same fear... I don’t know how to even think of that.. I’m so sorry.
If this serves of something. People who have drowned but were brought back to life say that after the first 5-10 seconds of panic/pain a sense of peace fills you and you stop feeling like you're drowning and just feel calm. So despite it being such a tragic passing he probably didn't suffer in his last seconds.
Breaks my heart knowing that he tried so hard to get out and that he was so close. Im glad the family has answers. Rest in Peace young man.
I have always placed myself in a victims's shoes and the terror he must have felt knowing he was about to have to take a huge gulp of air.....tragic.
I wonder if the impact injured him, and that's why he was unable to escape. Jared was able to get him out with relative ease - granted, that's after months of Jacob being underwater, so it might've been easier too. Still, it's much more tragic due to how close he was to getting out.
The care and respect for the young man was heart wrenching. Good job guys!
I cant agree more, even after they secured Jacob in the bag, they still brought him as gently as possible into the sheriffs bought, even stating, "watch his head" during the slow drop into the boat. I'm always concerned how each states cops are but massive respect to these cops here.
Totally, even the police "Be gentle, watch his head be careful" great to see
I could not imagine fighting that hard and being that close to getting out only to get caught up on something. Sad!

RIP and my condolences
Jared, I appreciate your sensitivity and professionalism in handling the resolution of this terrible and heartbreaking accident. I have to say I was shocked by the sonar image, and it must have been incredibly emotional for you too. I feel so much for this family, and appreciate that, while respectful, you didn't hold anything back from them. At least they could begin processing the truth. God rest his soul💔
Almost as if he was reaching up, saying, "Here I am, guys! Right here!😢 Breaks my heart
Seeing he tried his hardest to get out and survive broke my heart
I honestly don’t think he was trying to get out. I feel like with an impact like that he was dead or at least unconscious from the wreck and his body was trying to float out of there as it decomposed and became buoyant.

If anyone who considers driving drunk could witness Jacob's mother's anguish, and know how this affects loved ones, surely they'd think twice. This story is indeed haunting, and many thanks to AWP and to Jacob's family for allowing this series to be shown in all of its harsh tragedy.
Incidentally, that gorgeous, touching song at the end is, "When Things Try to Tear You Apart," by Ben Wagner.
Agreed. Stop drunk driving. He was a young man, grew up with being told that in high school, but still made poor decisions. May god give his family the strength to overcome this news.
How exactly did they get to the point that he was drunk driving at the moment?
@@neuroleptic2563 Apparently when he went to get his girlfriend and himself food he drunk 3 to 4 drinks of I think "long Island iced teas?" as told by the staff of the establishment

This is the most incredibly heartbreaking episode. Jared you handled what must have been exceptionally emotional for you. You are really an angel. ❤
"Oh Jacob" like he was talking to someone he knew
I could never do what Jared and the rest of AWP do, but I have the utmost respect for their work. Bringing closure to the survivors, healing broken souls, and bringing lost loved ones home to rest in peace instead of being left alone forever is a higher calling.
Jared and the crew also brought closure to Jacob. Now he knows that his family knows what happened to him.
"That is Jacob... [...] he almost made it."
If that does not get you to pay extreme attention, nothing will.

I cannot easily express the roller-coaster of emotions I felt when Jacob was visible on sonar. Incredible passion and respect from the AWP team and Sheriff's Office.
When I saw that...I was like oh no...
My stomach felt like it was literally full of rocks. It was grotesquely clear for a bunch of pixels.

The respect both Jared and the PD showed in recovering Jacob was remarkable. They treated his remains as though they were recovering a loved one of their own. Such a sad case. I was crying for you, Jacob’s mom and family, and for all the those whose loved ones haven’t been found yet.
I cannot imagine seeing the sonar with him trapped under the car. You are such a compassionate person and your caring for others’ loved ones is endearing and inspiring.

@@lisamarieberube4158I thought the same thing 😞 I was like "there's just no way...."
That’s so sick i’m sorry. My condolences
People are so heartless 😢 I’m sorry you had to deal with that on top of losing your husband
I’m so very sorry. ❤For you ❤For your husband
I’m soooo sorry 🥀 Some “people” are just cruel. You deserved better ! 💔
I will never understand why people do these things. I would think it’s not the normal response. If I were a hiker I would understand the dangers and sadness regardless. My condolences to you.
