  • On October 19, 2024, Eddie Robert Pullin Jr. set out on his familiar route to work at FedEx in Troutdale, Oregon. It was late in the evening, and Eddie was traveling in his 1994 Dodge van with his beloved dog, Sassy, nestled by his side. He had taken this route countless times before, but that night, something went terribly wrong. Eddie never arrived.
For weeks, Eddie’s family lived in agony, not knowing where he was or what had happened. At just 27 years old, Eddie had already faced more than his share of challenges, battling epilepsy-a condition that had impacted every aspect of his life. He had endured seizures that cost him jobs, independence, and stability, but he never let it define him. Eddie was resilient, hardworking, and determined to keep moving forward. Through it all, he had Sassy, his constant companion and source of comfort.
On the night of October 19, Eddie was heading to work from a friend’s house, but stress, exhaustion, and the weight of his condition may have collided in the worst way. His family believed that a seizure caused him to lose control of his van, sending him off the road and into the Columbia River along NE Marine Drive. It was a terrifying thought-a young man and his dog submerged, unseen, while his family desperately searched for answers.
Eddie’s father, desperate for answers, had seen our work in previous searches and reached out to us with a heartfelt plea. He believed that if anyone could find his son and bring him and Sassy home, it would be AWP. His faith in our mission drove us to do everything we could to provide the closure his family so desperately needed.
When Eddie’s father reached out to Adventures With Purpose, he shared not just the pain of his missing son but also the challenges Eddie had faced in life. His epilepsy had robbed him of jobs and opportunities, yet Eddie remained strong. He was a devoted son, a caring brother, and a loyal friend.
On November 9, three weeks after Eddie went missing, our team joined the search. We focused on a 2-mile stretch of the Columbia River near Marine Drive, the route Eddie always took to work. Using sonar technology, we scanned the depths, searching for Eddie’s van and the answers his family so desperately needed.
Then, sonar revealed a van submerged 12 feet underwater, approximately 35-40 feet from the shoreline. The weight of the discovery was immediate. As we prepared to dive, we knew this could be Eddie. When we reached the van, resting on its wheels, its windows intact, inside, we saw what no family should ever have to endure. Eddie was in the front seat.
Eddie’s life had been marked by strength, but also by a silent battle with epilepsy that may have ultimately led to this tragedy. His loyal companion, Sassy, had stayed faithfully by his side even in their final moments.
Later that evening, law enforcement recovered the van, bringing Eddie and Sassy home to their family at last. It was not the outcome anyone had hoped for, but it brought closure to a heartbreaking chapter.
Eddie’s story is a stark reminder of the hidden battles so many face. His epilepsy was an invisible burden that he carried with courage, even as it shaped his life in ways he couldn’t control. Yet, through it all, he had the love of his family and the unwavering loyalty of his little dog, Sassy.
We invite you to watch Eddie and Sassy’s story unfold-the search, the discovery, and the bittersweet closure we helped provide. It’s a story of resilience, heartbreak, and the bond between a man and his best friend.
Eddie and Sassy, you are deeply loved and will never be forgotten. 🕊️❤️

That was an extremely good group of people he had around him. Eddie/Jay was very blessed to have known them. Even the care displayed in the conversation with the 19yr old about viewing his friend and not having that be his last memory and having that still frame stuck in his head for the rest of his life is an example of how much these people value friendship. They care more than anyone I've ever witnessed and some families I've seen. To the 19yr old, they did you a favor. I found out the hard way there are some things you just should not see in this lifetime when I wanted to be there for my Father as he took his last breath in Nov '23 and I'm glad I was there but like some of them said it comes back at the most random moments and a tidal wave of grief comes with the things you can't unsee. I would never do it again and I would never allow anyone to be there when I take my last breath. Still frames like that burn themselves into your brain and you will wish they didn't. I wish I had met just one person in my lifetime so far that resembled anyone in this group of people. RIP Eddie/Jay and Sassie.

Every medical examiner in the US needs to watch this video. That woman had the worst job on this video. She took care of Eddie and Sassy and made a difficult job look easy. She was compassionate and caring. I do not know her name, but she needs the recognition she deserves for the way she handled this recovery. If she handles all the deaths that come her way like she did here, she deserves any and all praise. To AVP, the Sheriffs Dept., the Dive team, the company that pulled the van up and hauled it away, and all in the MEs office, you did good that night. You all did real good.

I was doing ok until the end when the coroner / medical examiner said " we have Sassy out of the van, She's going to go with Eddie and they are going to remain together".
That just broke my heart and I made me cry. The respect that she gave by saying Sassy's name rather than "the dog" and the fact that she kept them together, just bless her.
I also thought that his parents equal love and concern for Sassy and they wanted her retrieved as well was beautiful. Clearly she was a special member of the family and when they get to lay Eddie to rest his beloved Sassy will also be with him. My deepest love and condolences to Eddies family and all his friends who managed to pin point where he was through their searching, bless.

Kudos to you! My Dad was well known back in the day for facial reconstruction as a mortician-he was in Vietnam and would help reconstruct faces of dead soldiers but he could not “not do it” . When I was a student at UCLA my dad called the LA county medical examiner, a friend, and I got a job as an autopsy tech. I tell people who ask to see a family member who has drowned and finally found as a floater that it’s better not to see as a lasting memory. There are family though that want to see. It was very emotional for me to be the one comforting them during that moment. Never forgot those families.

I pray that the family sees this and knows that he didn't want to be the way he was, angry, confused and not able to fix the issues at hand. He knew deep down inside that the seizures were a part of something bigger. He had a seizure and that's when the accident happened. He was speeding but when the seizure hit, his foot locked down on the gas petal so he was going over 100 mph at the point of impact with the water. And Sassy wasn't going anywhere without him, that's what best friends do. They both are in heaven together and he is healthy now and still comes back to let you guys know he's still around. No you're not crazy when things move, or electronics act up. It's just your son letting you know he's ok.

Id Say maybe He had a Seizure and His Foot came off the Gas and He just Rolled off the Road and down in. If a Car Hits Water at anything over 25-30 MPH it's pretty Dramatic. That Van has no impact damage at all.

I lost my son March 22, 2024. I loved how everyone explained the risk of seeing their family and friend after they have gone. Although my son was not found in the water, it is still a very traumatic time. Every ounce of me wanted to see my son. Whomever said that it is not what you want to remember as their last memory of them, was totally correct. No matter the state of circumstances. Remember the good times, the joyful times. I too deal with this everyday. My son will be 35 on Christmas Eve. My heart goes out to Eddie's family and friend. You are not alone.

Common with epilepsy. I live with epilepsy, and when you’re young and can’t stay conscious, it sucks. You can get angry and frustrated, and it leads to depression. My old grandad once said to me “never live on your knees. ALWAYS pick yourself up” and it’s good advice. I’m an older epileptic now, I’m 50. But, I’ve had it with me for 40 years. So many concussions have to have an impact. My short term memory is shocking lol. 😂

My dad randomly developed epilepsy at 51. He's 60 now. His epilepsy caused him some definite sadness since you lose trust in your body and a sense of individuality/independence. It was his medication Kepra that made him so angry all the time though, I've never seen my dad so upset at everything and everyone. He's on new meds now and those symptoms have gone away and he's back to his goofy self. Still has sadness though cause the meds make his hand shake and it's makes him feel older than he truly is. Epilepsy is very traumatizing and I wish doctors knew more about it, I'm sorry you suffer it as well. ❤️ @@pommiebears

Whoever the ME is should be in charge of all operations not just in that county but in that entire state. Amazingly professional and exceptionally human. Everyone should strive to be that humanistic because the world would be a better place. 👏🏻 ❤

I absolutely love this medical examiner. Just the way she speaks and her personality is absolutely incredible. I can only imagine the relief and comfort that she brought to this group of friends in one of the worst moments of their lives. The way she treats them as his family and is so calming and truly caring and loving is beyond amazing. It could have very easily gone the opposite way with her telling them you aren’t family and i can’t/ won’t speak to you but I just want to put it out there that she seems truly amazing. So glad you all were able to find this young man and give his friends and family closure.

Something tells me that Sassy was Eddie's "heart" and a reflection of the best of Eddie's love for all the many Loves in his life. To his parents and siblings, know that his love remains with you - love is something I believe we both take with us and leave behind when we die as people and are born back into the source from which we come. To his dear friends who attended the scene of his body's recovery, you did an act of honoring him and protecting his family from the shadows of this recovery as representatives of all those who ever cared for or encountered him. Truly noble deeds. To the recovery team: amazing, compassionate work that inspires the best in all of us! We thrive when we are heroes to others/each other.
