My dad fought in WW2 and had a Gurkha friend. A stick grenade exploded and wounded my dad in the arm. When he looked around his friend had taken the full blast and was killed. My dad hardly ever spoke of the horrors he experienced but said that he was shielded by his friend and would probably be dead. He lost a lot of mates during that time but he never got over the loss of his Gurkha friend and said he was the kindest, bravest man he ever met. My dad never hated the Germans and thought it was sad that politicians always start wars but are rarely affected by them on both sides. This song always hits me right in the guts every time. ✌️❤️🇬🇧

What makes this song so extraordinary is that it could be a soldier on a battlefield anywhere in the world, at any point in human history. It's a rare thing for a musician to write a song with such a timeless quality.
Yes, to me also the most moving lyrics in the song are when he says " and though they did hurt me so bad, in the fear and alarm, you did not desert me, my brothers in arms". So powerful...
It is a song about war and a warrior dieing and his hopes and wishes slipping away. Anybody who has been to war knows that moment, holding your Brother in Arms hand and feel him slip away I walked through the valley of death and have no tears left, for this live.
This song is like a prayer, has made me cry every time I have/heard it since it came out! At their concert in the 1990s I and all the other audience cried thru their performance of this great prayerful hit ✌️
Great reaction! I can't through this song without shedding tears...Mark's words and the emotion in his guitar make it this way. This song can apply to ALL service people, no matter which conflict through time. It's message is truly universal!
I must have heard this track 10,000 times. Last time, like my first time, it reminded me of brothers long gone and past. Still bring tears to my eyes, memories are distant but not all forgotten. Thanks for your take on this.
In 1985 I had the LP Brothers in Arms. first time I heard this song I cried. It stirred up sorrow, pain and despair from past lives, hidden deep in my soul. I've been a warrior many times, bur each time I hear this song I'm quit.
Saw Mark Knopfler once in Oberhausen. Due to a back injury he sat on a bar chair. I guess there were about 10-15.000 people there, but sometimes the venue was so silent, you could hear a needle drop and it felt like he played in your living room. Absolute legend. Only man on the planet who has a goosebump-voice and plays goosebump-guitar...Greetings from the "Ruhrgebiet"
Thank you from the bottom of my heart - yours was a truly sincere and moving reaction to one of the greatest anti-war songs. It always brings me to tears. To quote another memorable song from the past "War. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing."
I can relate to this song and it always brings a tear to my eye. It was played at the funeral of one of my friends who served with me. I was not the only Scotsman who cried that day. March no more my soldier laddie, march no more now the battles O'er. You described the song well, your description came straight from your heart ❤️
The song is actually about a dying soldier saying goodbye to his friends, and them continuing to speak to him until his eyes slowly closed and he was gone. 🇺🇸😎
Yes it was Lieutenant Lawrence shot by an Argentinian Sniper on Mount Tumbledown in the Falklands War ...he was shot they say when the Agentinians were retreating and he stood up and shouted to his men "are you having fun yet!"
2Lt Lawrence survived being shot in the head, so it is not about him but about war in general with a heavy bias on those killed on both sides in the Falklands; RIP Lcpl N 'Meano' Smith 2 Para, 'til the final RV cousin 😢
I grew up listening to Dire Straights, my parents would always play their albums when they had friends over, and remember hearing their music from by bedroom.
Back in 1985 i bought this album. It became the first to sell over 1 million copies on the new CD format. To this date it's still up there with the best. The title song is a true masterpiece that rips your heart apart. 😢
1 world, living in different once!... Sarah, mach weiter so und bleib wie du bist 🤘♥️
This song will always remind me of an episode of 'Our Tune' which was introduced by Simon Bates on Radio 1 I can't remember the year, but a Woman had written in to the Show to explain the loss of her Husband in a War (at that time) leaving her and her Children on their own. Simon Bates told the Story to the listening audience, with his usual heart felt description, then he introduced this song that the Woman had chosen as 'Our Tune'........It simply had me in pieces listening to it. I hope today that this Woman and her Children are much happier.
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run').
Yes, to the comments below this one. I've been moved to tears by it since it came out. Mark Knopfler is a musical genius, w/o a doubt. There's a beautiful live version of this that I would really recommend to you: from their DVD, On the Night, 1993. If anything, more powerful. Thanks for doing him, and please do more.
Absolutely Michael! That concert was extraordinary from start to finish. Thank God the audio and video work done to produce the DVD were equally as impressive. Everyone’s performance on the stage that night still inspires. It’s surprising how many have no idea it exists. Everyone I show it to is blown away. Saw both this show and Pink Floyd’s Pulse Tour that same yr only months apart. Two of the greatest shows I’ve seen in 50yrs. To a fellow traveler, regards…
Simply one of the greatest anti-war songs ever performed. Mark Knopfler was simply a genius during the "Brothers in Arms" sessions. One of the great works of art during the 80s'.
"Every man has to die". Everybody dies in war. Only, some of us get to live to tell the tale, and some of us don't. That's just the way it is (the ugly truth that stings). Clint Eastwood put it best at the end of the movie "The Outlaw Josie Wales", saying: I guess we all died a little in that damn war.🇺🇸😎
yeah, if your heart doesn't break listening to this, be thankful you do not understand it. Go live your life thankful to those that gave all, so we could have something. RIP to all brothers in arms. And live in peace, those that survived. Thank you too. Your effort and sacrifice matters, even if it don't feel like it does. It matters to me and many others I know. What you did no matter where, nor the outcome, so that others might have a chance to live in peace. Thank you my brothers in arms.
Talking about solders I lost so many friends during the iraq war i see you keep putting outstanding music on sarah keep the music and reactions are like 🍒 s on top 🤠😅

As an old soldier & an absolute fan of Dire Straits, this is always played at our reunions but....to see you upset watching this actually made my old weary eyes start to leak a bit. I honestly do not think I ever cried at Brothers in Arms as it has always been a bit of an anthem within the military.....until now 😪
Greetings young lady a great band and a great song.Did you have a look at Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy Live)? If not it is smashing.Stay safe young lady.
This is why Mark is in my view one of the best guitarists in the world. He can make a guitar weep. And his playing style is so recognisable. For another moving war song, have a listen to James Blunt's "No Bravery". James served in the British Army during the war in Kosovo in the 90s with the UN peacekeepers and he wrote this song about what he saw while over there.
I asked my family to please play this song at my funeral. The eternal human dilemma. Those closest to each other fight the most. Europeans are, factually, genetically, culturally, in terms of everything, a variation of a theme, and we have been in war, killing each other, for at least 2000 years, and it still is going on right now. WHY the F..in HELL? And Sarah -- a) thanks for sharing your emotions. It helped me a lot with crystalizing an African female protagonist in a Novel I am working on. AND: I struggled for a moment with your accent. First thought: something South Georgia (US). Second thought: no way... she is the real thing. Ghana perhaps? But no. Then I got it: Nigeria! Fun fact: When I studied in Hawai'i, I had a Sri Lankan roommate. His accent was somewhat similar ;-). Oh -- and just for clarification: the African novel character I referred to is a refugee who made it to Europe all by herself, after incredible heartship, at age 16. She worked and studied really hard, became an engineer, got her Ph.D. and at the current stage in the novel is head of a maritime engineering research lab. So far in my writing she lacked emotional depth 🙂

No cover version could ever do this justice as I believe Mark wrote this with the guitar playing already an integral part of the whole song. Take away the guitar and the whole song loses so many dimensions.
Listening to this song for what must be the thousandth time and sobbing just like the first time. My heart breaks to see the rise of the far right, the rise in hatred in all its forms. This song still unheard and unheeded by so many of us 😢
Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are the two guitarists that can actually make their instrument cry 😢
.... along with listener(s).
A great thing.
Others too!
Definitely. The only artist that can make it sound like they're doing a duet with their guitar
I couldn't agree more !
so true!
One of the best and saddest songs ever sung.
It's sung from the point of view of a dying soldier.
My dad fought in WW2 and had a Gurkha friend. A stick grenade exploded and wounded my dad in the arm. When he looked around his friend had taken the full blast and was killed.

Having been a soldier myself, brothers never leave anyone behind. Peace is key
Wise words brother.
True Bro
He makes that guitar cry. And me with it.
So beautiful and a great tribute to those who served. As a 22 year veteran this really touched me.
Oh pa 😢
Me too brother.
i never served and i get very emotional when i hear this song.
We're all brothers and sisters in arms.
All equal.
40 years after and I still remember the lyrics. It truly was one and always will be one of the best songs.

Actually, Knopfler wrote this in the aftermath of the Falklands War but was also written as a tribute to all those that serve in time of war.
