- Super Mario 3D All Stars on Nintendo Switch introduced Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy to a slew of players who may have not had access to them before. So to celebrate this release, I figured I'd highlight 3 weird discoveries that take place at the start of each game. From Peach's eye earrings, to Rosalina having hidden dialogue, let's take an odd trip into these three iconic titles in SM3DAS!

I feel like the earrings one was done on purpose back in the day to make them look like they had more reflection in the sun. Nobody would notice such a small detail back then. I can't remember any more cutscenes in the direct sunlight where Peach is in the background.
The Super Mario Sunshine cutscenes look really strange on the switch because it's SD on an HD screen.
I really notice the heat rippling effect of the background now. With the Gamecube it didn't look so over exaggerated but now it's almost too much. Nintendo did amazing with the graphics of SMSunshine because with the hardware now it looks almost too good lol.
+ShadowPersonOfTheUnknown It’s definitely a mistake - they’re clearly EYES, they would have used a different texture if they wanted to achieve the effect you are describing.
Fun fact, it's all just emulation and upscaled textures. Galaxy is a hybrid between emulation and being ported.
It's not even the only instance of a mistake like that happening in Sunshine's cutscenes.
In the ending when Bowser is talking to Bowser Jr about Peach not being his mother, the white in Bowser's eyes is transparent. You can see a bit of blue from the sky in them.
It's a mistake. In the shot right after that, the earrings return to their normal, round, blue shape and colour.

前 can mean ‘front’ but can also mean ‘you’ (the meme 'Omae wa, moushindeiru' uses it: お前はもう死んでいる). So it could be an exclamation of surprise to see you.
Bradley it is used as “Omae”, but I don’t think “Mae” is ever used to mean “you”
And even if it did, I’d highly doubt Rosalina would speak that way to Mario, since “Omae” sounds quite masculine and not Princess-like...
Another meaning of “Mae”, though, is “before” (in English as well, you can say “I’ve been there before” or “right before my eyes”. It still doesn’t really help with understanding what this dialogue is supposed to be...
@@Adrimixmi eh, it's complicated. Nowadays it's considered rough because there's an element of condescension but if you trace back the etymology of お前 it used to be used in the-long-agos as a way of addressing someone who you consider incredibly noble (nowadays it's more that you're mocking them as if they *were* noble). So if they were writing Rosalina as if she spoke in an incredibly old-timey way referring to Mario simply as 前 would make sense.
This is all "coulds" anyway haha so lord knows what they were doing. Might be interesting to see how she actually refers to Mario in the japanese version of the game for reference to see if she still speaks old-timey or is more neutral.

Its just supposed to be front because us as game developers know that whenever you tackle dialogue you always need debug text.
Speaking from my experience as a developer, I would also like to present the idea that, for whatever reason, someone might have left this here as a "note" for someone who they were collaborating with and forgot to take it out. Since the trigger for the cutscene always happened as expected, the quality team would not have caught this.
In Sunshine, when the "Go!" timer starts in the 3D All-Stars version, it bleeps at you.

Probably just a graphical error when they were trying to port the cutscenes over.
@@zigazav1 Actually just checked the original cutscene on my gamecube (PAL version). It does look a bit like eyes in that specific shot, but it doesn't move awkwardly or warp like that so they may have done something with the earrings that make it appear like eyes to something that doesn't know what earrings look like specifically. Since these cutscenes are supposedly AI upscales of the original it's actually not that odd that it does detect them like eyes which causes *that* to happen. I honestly never really noticed the earrings looking a bit different there though.

since it's teh Japanese edition, the star on the platform in Jolly Roger Bay is not in a box as most people was used to.
Idea: Port all of the all star ports to one game, to create
SUPER MARIO ALL STARS ALL STARS
This is actually a good idea.
Maybe adding some extra games that isn't present in the "All Stars series" and a "Congratulations, you completed all the games" type of message, improving some graphics of the most recent games, more the 3D ones maybe and keep the same style for the old ones like SM3, USA, 2:The lost levels, maybe just slightly changing the graphics.
You know, your idea is pretty good, maybe it will take some time but it will be worth all 60 dollars.

What does this have to do with the all star version of Mario galaxy
Mario Galaxy is a mix of porting and remastering the game I believe. As the rom had to be customized to work with the Switch, it's a harder game to emulate. Which is why Miis were left out of it in the 3D All Stars collection.

Yeah, it's just an error message if you manage to glitch the game and get there early. Happens in Paper Mario as well.

every time you restart the game, your 1-up count in Galaxy resets to 4
This also happens in the original, and in SMG2. I'm not sure why but it does.
(I don't know if it also happens in SM64/SMS)
@@Duraludon884 It does indeed happen in SM64. It's not like you NEED the extra lives. If you get a game over, you just press start, click your file and continue. Albeit outside of the castle
Kirby games do this too. NSMB Wii did not have that mechanic though. You could stockpile lives to the maximum amount and not worry about losing all the lives you got, when you save and quit. NSMB Wii also had a special unlockable for while Mario has the max number of lives, he takes his hat off. Doesn't change the end of level animation for when he takes of his hat temporarily though, so he tries to take a hat off that isn't there, so he's just grabbing air.

Also, getting max lives is required for 100% completion in New Super Mario Bros. 2

So I would have personally taken this as "You're here?!"
I often make little joke like that with characters you shouldn't be able to talk to, like a picnic basket that should vanish after a cutscene is over so it asks how you are speaking to it.
My thoughts on all three of these so far (as someone who's only played Sunshine):
64- Some levels are fun, while some levels make me want to die. Also it's completionist hell.
Sunshine- Doesn't hold up insanely well, but still really fun. Really miss the long jump though.
Galaxy- Exceeded my expectations. Probably the best presentation of the classic Mario conflict give or take Odyssey, great level design, and beautiful visuals. Definitely some filler missions and camera issues though.
It’s not really that difficult to 100% 64 to be honest...I started on Friday and had 120 stars by 2:00am. Sunshine on the other hand, is a nightmare to 100% (finding all the blue coins is a pain), and Galaxy just has a ton of post-game stuff to do in order to completely 100%
Galaxy definitely doesn't have camera issues in the original. Pressing c on the nunchuk centers the camera behind you. And filler missions, really? No. Galaxy has the weirdest and most fun game mechanics I've ever played.

Just had fun playing through Super Mario 64 again on the Switch. I had fun finding that one glitch where you can fall through the castle roof and supposedly get "stuck" because you'll always be on the wrong side of the entrance doors. But even as a kid, I knew Mario wasn't stuck. If you jump over the doors or go to the side of the doors, you pass through to the side you're meant to be on and the game plays on as usual.
I feel like I've heard this "glitch" mentioned a few times as a death trap that can only be escaped by resetting the game and have wondered if I'm the only one who knew how to break free...
The only game in the 3D Mario collection I never got a chance to play back in the day was Super Mario Galaxy (I just always seemed to put off getting it when it came out and after the sequel came out I was like I had two games that I needed to get, thus kinda hoped they'd release them both together, though once I saw the 3D collection I was like, might as well get it so I can at least play Galaxy and because I knew I'd get both Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine which I both just started playing on the Switch recently as watching Swankybox's videos made me want to enjoy some 3D Super Mario nostalgia).

The Rosalina thing is probably a little crash preventer, I'd say. Normally, you're not supposed to be able to get close enough to talk to her, but the devs likely decided to give her a message just in case a crafty player finds a way to get in there and talk to her anyways, so the game wouldn't crash loading non-existent dialogue. Having backup dialog for characters that can't actually speak at a given time (such as, somewhat infamously IIRC, having cutscene lines for a certain flower girl who develops a fatal case of "got stabbed", for cutscenes _after_ she dies) a trick a lot of games use, since it tends to be easier than having custom behaviour for that one specific situation.
that Mario 64 one is dope cuz i actually triggered that 1-Up yesterday and noticed that it was kinda odd, cuz i'd never seen it before, but just chalked it up to my sliding all the way to the back wall, which i usually don't do. cool stuff

I'm fairly certain I've gotten that one-up at the end of the slide before, but I somehow never made the realization that it wasn't always showing up and therefore never thought about it. I love that after all these years, I'm still learning new things about Super Mario 64.
I found a really weird thing where sometimes when I cross the plank bridge on the lower part of Whomp’s fortress, the screen starts shaking insanely until I walk off of it
THAT'S the reason behind the Secret Slide 1-Up?? 20 YEARS of playing that game and I had no idea. You just blew my mind
I figured that you were going to mention some bugs that were in the Original Super Mario Sunshine that was fixed on the Switch. An example being that in the Gamecube version when you head back to Delfino Airstrip and check the Map, it says that you are still in the Plaza which is not the case in this version. Their was also the Pinna Island Bug which had the Ferris Wheel spin out of control in Episode 3 when outside the Park but is fixed when you enter. The opposite happened in Episode 5 of the Gamecube version. They seem to have fixed them here in the Switch version.

Here’s some other things I’ve noticed while playing galaxy, the blue guys who shoot the rocks don’t shoot rocks anymore, and the red ones who shoot more than one only shoot one rock, another thing, you don’t lose air anymore when you spin in the water

I love the collection. Can’t believe it took my half a year to beat sunshine as a kid. It was my first game. And today I got nearly 50 shines in a single session.
The Weird 1-Ups portion of your video reminded me of this. In the level where you race the Penguin inside the cottage(Cool Cool Mountain, i think), i found 2 1-Ups in the shortcut slide. I keep picking up the first one, but the second one spawns and goes through the left wall. I havent been able to obtain it, and im definitely sure that it wasnt in the original game. Maybe you could look into it?

The one-up on the slide in Mario 64. I never thought that was secret at all and I didn't realise anything needed to go into spawning it. It spawned literally every time for me to the point that I used that level when I was 10 to farm one-ups.
The only weird discovery that I’ve done is that the manta boss is still as unfair as it ever was.
If you get trapped by the little ones and you get hit by them then there’s basically no escape, because in the time you recover you’ve already been hit by another one or landed in the electric goop. Yeah you can floaty, but once you land all of this starts over again.
You should do a video on 3d allstars to see if all the other weird stuff from the original versions are still there. Things like that hidden goomba texture under the clam ride in pina park, that random block in freeze flame galaxy, the supposed 121st star in 64, stuff like that
Something weird I noticed about 3D allstars is that sometimes if you jump on a koopa, a purple missing texture appears on it's body.

This happens because they didn't re-render the movies, they AI upscaled them and the AI upscaler thinks that they are supposed to be eyeballs.
Maybe Princess Peach actually has a secret pair of eyeballs on her earlobes and wears those blue earrings to hide them when the camera is on as to not freak out anyone watching, but forgot to put them on during that brief take? Stranger things have happened (looking at you pupiless Mario reflections).

I am interested in what other changes were made other than the dialogue in the Shindou version of 64. I noticed a couple things in dire dire docks, like the eel is more stubborn to leave the ship and the star that you have to get off of the eels tail is more precise. I hit the tip of the tail without touching the star which worked before, now you have to directly touch the star for it to come off.
I haven't spent too much time in Super Mario 64 on 3D All Stars yet, but I feel like the rabbits at the beginning of Super Mario Galaxy feel like they are a lot easier for me to catch? I remember them always being a drag, but I got all three relatively quickly this time. Dunno if they actually changed anything within Galaxy like that, but it came to mind even if it was just coincidence.
Am I mistaken, or aren't all these in the original games? So, I guess they're technically in Super Mario 3D All Stars, but they weren't discovered through SM3DAS?

Something that I noticed is that in Mario 64, if the camera is zoomed out long enough and you move, Mario gets a low poly model. I don't remember that happening back in the original

I'm always skeptical these kinds of videos will have basic regurgitated information but I learned about Peach's floppy eyeball earrings and how that one up works and that's pretty great.

Peach's earrings were also her eye texture in the original, I think. It's a lot more noticeable on switch, though
The 3rd one seems intentional, if the game knows if you skipped part of the slide in the penguin race, it makes sense that the 1-up is a reward for not skipping the slide.
