  • Join Ashley and myself on a 4 day backcountry trip through one of Kevin Callans top 50 canoe routes! Come on a backcountry adventure as we deal with the bugs, beaver dams, and portages through Algonquin provincial park. This route has a little bit of everything on it and although its not the hardest trip in the world is certainly requires a little bit of effort!

You found yourself a GOOD ONE in Ashley, Keenan - she is a keeper for sure. 😄 I love your 'fur babies' too and how they also seem to enjoy the adventures.

    I'm showing my age, but I used to camp at Big Doe Camp back in the 60s. The Canoe Lake start was one we used many times, but traveling through the park back then was with compass and map. There were no signs and except for a few bigger lakes, no established camp sites. We had lousy canvas tents, and wood rib canoes. We strapped the paddles in the canoe with a blanket for carrying the canoes on portages. Man I wish I was 40 years younger and could enjoy it with the equipment available now. Sure would make things a lot more enjoyable. Enjoy it while your young, it only comes around once in life.

      Thanks very much for the comment Neil. We are soooo lucky now with all the lightweight gear. It’s pretty incredible what’s available now. Your story sound just like my dad talking about going there with my papa. Canvas tents, cast iron everything…..different story nowadays. Thanks again for the comment.

    That Portage from ink Lake to Tom Thompson was probably the most gruelling Portage I have ever done in my life. We did it there and back on a double Carry, my poor boys first time on a canoe trip and I did that root with them

    I had bear trouble on Joe Lake when I was there in the 90's. It traumatized my dad who was about 63 then. My sons (10 and 13) were with us too, so that added to his concerns. Too many people not being cautious with their food led to the making of a nuisance bear, and he harangued us all night. We even had to take in the idiots next door who had a cooler that they had emptied their beer cans into, so we think the bear was a little drunk too! Glad your trip went better.

    • @classixdrummer
      @classixdrummer 3 роки тому

      Cool, thanks. Surely you must be filtering in addition to this right? We have always loaded up on water at the spring on the Penn Falls portage on our way in on that route. We carry a Platypus filter rig for when that runs out and use pills in addition to it. Overkill maybe but I have never been sick in the park but have encountered a few “beaver fever” victims in my years in the backcountry. You are a lucky guy in one thing, I would love to get my wife off the campgrounds and into the backcountry but have gotten a hard no on that for 35 years now.

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Classix. I am very lucky that Ashley enjoys the outdoors as much as I do. It makes some amazing canoe trips. As far as the steripen goes we do not pre filter the water. We simply fill our nalgenes up wherever we are and stir the pen around for just over a minute. Then we have our water to drink. We carry pills as well for a backup on our trips. We also have the Platypus gravity works and it works really well. We don't really use it much anymore because of how easy the steripen is. It just suits the way we go tripping a little better. You'll have to keep trying to get your wife into the backcountry. I hope 36 is your lucky number.

I'm still lugging my old 20 year old , cedarstrip boat thru Algonquin. I am 63 my wife and I have been doing it for 30 + years. We still did about 130 km this year in 8 days with over 20kms of portaging. Had to double trip each portage as my boat is 65 lbs. But "old reliable" , has always gotten us there and back, and hate to leave her at home ,it wouldn't be the same. Hi James. We certainly have a lot of bears here in Ontario and all across Canada. I wouldn’t say they are much of a problem though. We just really like to use barrels because they are so tough and waterproof.
      As far as water goes in most places we will treat our water. Our big Dog Hugo used to carry a lot but he is getting older now and we have had him hurt himself on trips and I can tell you from experience that carrying a 150lb dog out of the bush is no fun. So he doesn’t carry a pack anymore. The little dog has just started to use a backpack and is super upset every time we put it on her. It’s a work in progress!
