Grueling 8-Day Camping & Fishing Trip through the Boreal Forest (Full Version)

  • In 2018, I found a little piece of paradise that needed to be explored further. Fast forward to spring 2019 and Erin and I were getting ready to do just that. Little did we know, the path would be even more brutal than we imagined.
    This full version was edited again from scratch. Some parts have been added, some cut, plus the Q&A at the end. There's a lot of bad filming work which nothing can be done for, but at least I can redo the edit...this trip is special to us.

      At first I was so excited to see a new video. Then disappointed it was just an edit. Then watched it and realized two things. 1) this edit was really well done! 2) you two are some the toughest People ever. That icy start is no joke. I'd be in waders or going home. Lol

      All of your videos are extremely knowledgeable and excellent! I very much enjoy watching all of your videos. Your videos are giving me education on the art of backcountry canoe camping and fishing, and I'm hoping to see guided trips, or even courses, from the two of you one day ! A few things I really like from your trip videos is that you are wearing your PFD at all times on the water and the fact that you do not rush, your trips, either portaging, setting up camp, fishing or explaining something to your viewers.

    In your Q&A at the end you address fishing. You say you are not proud of it . Do not be ashamed of it either . It is human nature . You pinch barbs, you return them quickly. You handle them with wet hands . You eat them sparingly, not wastefully . Take pride in your skill and your ethical treatment of the fish you catch . You are a good example of a responsible angler . Continue to be an ambassador of that .

    I’ve been on two trips like this in my life. The highlights of those trips were in the tents at night dreaming of all the simple pleasures we missed from home, (dry towels, watching the weather from the windows etc) the way Erin continues to look at you with so much love despite you bringing her on such gruelling trips is so pure. You’re such a lucky man. She’s so cute.

    Dang. You guys are inspiring. :-) You got straight-up smacked down, by the elements and the terrain, on this trip. I can imagine that those watching your trips, who have never had the direct experience themselves, might wonder what can possibly be gained in pushing oneself so hard. The answer is something that you two always manage to capture/document, exceedingly well: it's that rush you get when you crest the last rise, of a portage, and you see the first glimpse of a lake that you've never seen before; it's the clouds making room for a little window of blue sky, after days of nothing but heavy slate-grey; it's the warmth of the fire when your travel clothes are soaked through and cold to the touch; it's the feeling of safety you get when you hunker down into your tent (or hammock) for the night. Can we ever truly appreciate those moments without enduring the effort and struggle that comes before?
    Thanks again, Erin and Jon, you crazy, awesome badasses. :-)

      It's the smartest thing to do when you're way out in the bush without much means in the way of help. Flipping your canoe out there is no joke. You learn a few things quickly. First is to tie everything in securely. Second is to use your safety equipment responsibly. As well as having a really good base in advanced first aid doesn't hurt. You never know, it could end up being someone else in trouble, or it could be you.

      Definitely way way easier. I haven’t attempted it in the summer but would love too. When I seen and heard where you were going it brought back some great memories of all the hugggeee hills. You guys are crazy(in an awesome way of course). I remember fishing Nellie once with no luck. We did well on Boyer and sometimes North skipper! We usually waited until late in the year though because we had to break trail. Didn’t want to fish it out or everyone else to fish it out. You know how it goes.

    Another great video! You guys are far more adventurous than I am. I do paddle in chest waders most of the time, and I can tell you from experience that taking an unexpected swim in modern light weight waders isn't a problem. In fact with my life jacket properly cinched up over them I've been dumped, self rescued, dragged my boat to shore and only gotten my shirt wet. I see NRS is even selling "Paddling bibs" now that are just waders with a wide neoprene belt. Think of them as a 3/4 dry suit. I think the horror stories of waders full of water pulling you down must have come from the old baggy rubberized canvas waders. That said, at the end of the day we look forward to stripping off our waders almost as much as you do drying out. So whatever works for you!

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Phil! Good to know! I guess it's just a comfort issue then, at least with my waders. No waaaay would I wanna be in them all day for travel like this lol. But I think dry suits are in our future...just wish we could try them on in person before dropping that dough but there's nowhere around here

      @philschaefer4651 3 роки тому

      @@LostLakes choose your poison. cold and wet, or hot and sweaty. I should mention that I use goretex waders with sock feet. huge improvement over the old neoprene booted waders, but still nice to strip out of them at the end of the day.

    Great video! Reminded me of a backpacking trip in Wyoming back in the 1970's.....Invited my childhood buddy and his wife on a 10 day backpack in the Wind River Range. He decided to purchase a pair of used military boots....I tried to recommend a quality pair of hiking boots with Vibram soles that are attached with screws....He ignored my effort and one of his heels dropped off on the second day out....Lol......and she couldn't hike and chew gum at the same time! They were miserable most of the trip....It pays to research and use quality gear....

    Beavers are a blessing and a curse. They can make a nice pond or lake but also choke off flow to a creek or channel. Then opportunistic plants further impede what used to be a stream. Those tough slogs in bogs showed up as navigable water on your map. Indeed they were at one time before beaver dams dried them out. You didn't let that or the ice or the lack of trails stop you. Erin gets bonus boot points. Thank you for sharing this and showing us all what perseverance and adaptive thinking can achieve.

    I discovered these videos a couple months ago. I downloaded a bunch to bring up with me to a remote cabin I built up the in Thousand Islands area. I love Canada. My folks had a cottage back in late 60's built in Ontario on Farren Lake. Beautiful. What I really enjoy about these videos is neither John or Erin act like experts. They have a lot of good information. Mistakes are made which they talk about, but never an attitude. Just a couple of nice folks with good knowledge out in the wilderness. I watched a guy whos youtube page is "The Lone Wolf". Looked good at first but then I got sooo tired of his attitude and arrogance. So Lost Lakes is such a great change.
