It's been a late spring and we had to push our trip back due to a late Ice out in the lakes around my house. The Kearney permit office for Algonquin Park is about a 45-minute drive from my place and Algonquin is accessed via a narrow river reached by long dirt, forest access road.
I did this trip with Shawn James of My Self Reliance and my brother Ted and we brought my dog Buck along for the journey too. The point of this trip was to Brook Trout Fishing but by evening on Day One, we were worried the bite was off.
Our Route would see us portage into the Nipissing River which we'd follow for a while before heading south and portaging over a height-of-land into Burntroot Lake and the Petawawa system which we ascended for a stretch before branching off into the Tim river which we'd follow up (and up) gaining 48 meters in elevation by the time we reached Longbow Lake. Continuing up the Tim we'd finish our trip midday on Day 7 after paddling 120 kilometres and portaging a total of 15,730 meters. The route can be done in five days but if you want ample time to fish, eight or even nine days would not be too many.
This episode covers much of Day One of the journey and the ibntro gives a sneak peek of things to come, so stay tuned for more Algonquin Park adventure in the coming episodes!

What I enjoy about your vids is that you are a real dude. No acting...just a guy having fun being himself. Great stuff man!
David Cloutier thanks a lot, ya I’m a terrible actor
Starting the day with Jim and Ted's Excellent Fishing Adventure. Trophy Brookies from the campsite. Yaahhhh! Thanks for saving me from terminal boredness.
What an epic trip this was!
Don’t forget to catch episode 2!
The combo of you, Ted and Sean is awesome. Love the work on the longhouse you guys are doing too. Looking forward to more of the collaborations.
Great vid Jim. Lovin' the way you keep it real with your relaxed style and humour.
Awesome video. So love how layed back Buck is. Very cool with the bull moose and then finally catching some fish. Can’t wait for more. Thanks for sharing.😘
trisha harrison No problem and yes, Buck ranks pretty low in the excitability scale.
Buck is not waiting for you guys he's on his way! Loved it, you go Buck. Awesome video share, I can't wait to follow your journey. Thank you guys for making an old man envious!
No problem, thanks a lot for checking it out. That was pretty funny, Buck running away with the boat like he was trying to launch it.
Love this perspective of the trip. Cheers!
Thanks a lot 🙂👍
Just found your Brutha through Shawn’s ⭕️ of Bushcraft Brotherhood. You know y’all Canadian boys really make people see the difference between USA&Canada citizens. I’ll tell you your genuine goodness and class outweighs my fellow Americans by far. Doing what you love and making a living at it it’s a “Cinderella story”. Good luck on your journeys and stay safe.🌲🔥🏕🛶🌲
Hey Buck, if Dad doesn't catch a fish,,, RUN!!! Laughing... Smiles
Will never get tired of hearing the Baird Brothers go "Yeehaaaaaahh!" when you guys land a fish.
Haha! Been saying that for years and had no idea it was going to become a thing
You guys are awesome! Love your channel! Shawn James is the Richard Proenneke of our time! There is no question! He’s an excellent woodsman, Bushcrafter, Hunter and Fisherman! It’s all in his soul! You guys are adventure men! Awesome skills!
Its grate to see the boys back on another adventure! Must feel right at home in Ontario's backyard. Looking forward to the rest of the videos.
Indeed we are and it’s always great to get out with my brother and do our first multi-day trip with Shawn
Exciting & adventurous! Always a better day with your fantastic videos!
Thanks very much!!
What a fun day! I love your sense of humor. This will be one interesting trip for sure.
Love your video! Buck is fun to watch. Thanks for sharing your trip. I watch Shawn James also.
Nice and no problem. Thanks for watching. Shawn’s stuff is pretty amazing.
“That little bit of spice...” LOL!! Some might call that ALOT of spice. Looked delicious either way. Great vid! Hope to see more from this trip!
It’s actually a batter mix, the Uncle Buck’s, so that why you gotta use a lot.
Great video Jim. Teds quite the poet, he's the artsy one beautiful fish guys. Jim your dog Buck he's at home in the canoe, campsite and on the trail. Can't wait for Part 2 scene 3 ...
Thanks a lot, and yes, Buck has learned to be very manageable in in the canoe. He just sleeps most of the time.
Now that looks like a great time....awesome!!
It was a great trip indeed
Love canoe camping fishing can’t beat it awesome channel guys
Awesome! One of my favourite trout holes in the park.
KCHappyCamper thanks a lot and 🤫
Cool video Jim, had a giggle when buck nearly launched the canoe b4 he was in :-) he travels extremely well. Nice to see the evening bite payed off, looking forward to seeing more. Cheers to the team
Ya, that was hilarious the way he looked like he was launching the boat. Who would have thought, the evening was the best time to fish!? Haha (I say with a hint of sarcasm)
Buck is the chillest dog ever. What good boy!
Great trip, Jim, thanks for the video.
Thanks a lot and you’re welcome.
good stuff man, watched Shawn's video said trout much I know whats coming cant wait to see your videos thanks man
I’m sure that made for a couple welcomed spoilers. I loved his vid. Hoping to get the next one out soon
I'm hitting Algonquin for 4 days with my brother, it's going to be awesome! Thanks for your videos, they are awesome.
Nice man! Ya, you’re going to love it! Big thanks for watching and glad you like the vids
Major league brookies! Loving this trek so far as expected. You keep it so real, psyched for part 2.
Derek Rivers thanks a lot, part 2 is up now - lots more fish and fun stuff.
Love watching you guys.
Well we'll turn in early an....fish on, grab the fricking reels! Classic!
Loved this video! Keep 'em coming!
Will do, thanks!
That was awesome Jim. Can’t wait to see the rest of the trip 👊🏻
Thanks a lot!! Gunna start cutting the next one now
Some great catches, nicely done.
Thanks a lot!
Great video Jim. I’ve done that same trip a few times and the speck fishing is very nice. First time was about 35 yrs ago Lots of fish and wildlife. Good to see the three of you. Love your new canoe
Thanks a lot Cliff, that's pretty cool that you've done the same trip. I imagine the fishing was better 35 years ago but unlikely much has changed. The canoe preformed very well.
Buck is the luckiest pooch in the world!
Hell, I'd even turn into a dog if I could go on a fishing trip like that :-)
He does get to coke on a lot of adventures and lives in a place where he gets to roam free. What more could s dog ask for?
Hey Jim: you & your brother have a sharp sense of humour. Most enjoyable. Finally, the fish want what you are offering. Thanks, Brian 79
Brian Spencer 👍 thanks
Time to cast to my tv. This should be a nice epic variety!! Going to do that now with these 2 parts!! Oh I've seen this. Oh well watch again lol It was awesome, now that it refreshed my memory.
Fishy, fishy in my tummy, great catch boys, looking forward to it sometime soon.
Awesome vid
Awesome cut
Thanks a lot buddy
Man, I'm so jealous of the trout! Nice video.
Sylvan Dread thanks a lot!
I think portage fish trips are the best it captures every facet of adventure and the experience it never gets old the same thing doesn't happened twice it's old but always new if that makes sense... I wish I could do way more of it ...
Trip of a lifetime. I'm jelly.
Thanks! Algonquin is a great place to paddle. The quintessential backcountry canoeing destination.
OMG! The universe just concatenated (old computer term ;-)… my fav Canadian outdoorsmen all together! Fun times!
Thanks! Glad you like it! Ya, this was a great trip.
Nice size Bull moose, And I must say an Awesome catch of trout, always nice to have a good fish fry , They taste so different from store bought Eh. nice to see you all together on this adventure , look forward to part two
Thanks a lot. It was a great day! And yes, different / better and fresher than store bought....and tastier than stocked fish too.
What majestuoso moose!!💪🌲
Who's a good boy? BUCK! Buck's a good boy!
I miss Buck, but looking forward to seeing North launch the canoe by himself one day.
Thanks Jim. Great video. My wife keeps saying, "I want to snuggle with Buck!" "Looks cold, Buck needs some snuggling" "Fishing looks easy, get back to the tent and snuggle with Buck"... sigh... i think she is right. I want to snuggle with him too. Love you guys. Keep it up.
Haha, thanks for the great comment. Buck is a one if a kind pooch. I’m going to snuggle him right now.
Love to see the improvements of the camera this year, camera work looks better too. Getting me pumped for camping season!!=
Thanks a lot! I shot this with a Canon XA30 and GoPro Hero 6.
Love buck reminds me of my lab he went everywhere with me canoe kayak boat truck jeeping he was the best love your vids
Thanks, I used to have a lab like that too, he was better than Buck but couldn’t take super cold conditions like Buck can
Buck would have shared some of his kibbles in-lew of some later date trout if you was starving. lol Miss that big dog
Really enjoyed the video thanks for sharing. Was a bit surprised to see the gutted trout hanging in the background flop around a time or two.
Jimbo & Shawn & Ted 3 great guy's all who love to canoe fish have great PUPS and wonderful Ladies for wives !!!
Nice brookies. I been slaying brookie and rainbow all spring. Full freezer. Fun times Jim.
Awesome, caught some rainbows through the ice but haven’t had a chance to get after any this spring.
@@JimBairdAdventurer brookie def. Taste better. Awesome trip Jim.
My gal and I did Algonquin North end for 11 days about 70 plus miles back in 1982. I was not so lucky with the fish. We ran out of grub. Rangers could not believe that we were able to pull it off with our minimalist packs. Had 2 really very close encounters with bears. And dang near got our tent trampled by a moose in the dead of night. Interesting ttip. Best
That fish at the end was still kicking lol!! at 13:25 the thing was still flopping with no guts just hanging there
Talk about fresh fish eh?
Great video all my life I have never get speckle trout that big
Thanks man, you should go to the Labrador
Awesome!
Thanks!!
Great video
finpainter1 big thanks man, part 2 goes live in 10 mins.
Thats some good eating there boys ! Great video !
Big thanks and indeed it was!
One of my favourite series of yours, gritty spring algonquin. Hoping to do this exact route come next spring, if covid cooperates!
Thanks a lot
Love these videos, I always perk up when one is uploaded! I'm curious how your liking the new boat? Beauty fish, hope there are many more to come!!
Thanks a lot, ya I’m loving the boat. Perfect for longer trips with a lot of portaging and minimal whitewater. Glad you’re liking the videos! Working long and hard on another one from this trip.
Legendary brookies!
Not bad at all eh?! Great trout fishery this is it you gotta work for them.
Nice video, thanks for sharing. At 13:30 the laker has been filet, hung and it’s still fighting on the stringer 👍
That’s what I call fresh fish eh? Thanks a lot!
Some nice specs guys. Always meant to head down the Nipissing but haven't yet.
Just watched Shawn’s vid. Hell of a stable boat you got there to be able to stand up through the rapids. That looked perilous at first...I’d definitely be getting wet if I ever try anything like that. Can’t wait to watch your version of the trip!
Thanks, the old adage “never stand in a canoe” just isn’t true. Standing gives you a better perspective of a given Rapids as you approach....but it’s a little unorthodox to continue standing in your descent. Unless you’re poling. They stand the whole way. The Prospector is definitely stable, though it’s not ideal if it’s just stability you’re looking fore. The Prospector is a good combination between stability, maneuverability, carrying capacity and flat water tracking ability. Best all around canoe design.
It’s obvious your pretty good at that stuff. Well done!!
I just finished watching Shawn's video from yall's camping and fishing trip...he had yall's link, so now I am gonna watch yalls too. Love all the wildlife yall got to see and hear (loons) too. I just love your dog, Buck...he is so quiet and seems to really enjoy being in the boat with you too. That is a lot to carry...your heavy backpack and then your canoe too...gotta tire yall out. Beautiful fish though!! Awe, poor Buck...be careful, he heard you say that!! Oh wow...easy way to clean the fish. I'm originally from Maryland and we use Old Bay to steam our crabs there...but, it is great on fish too. Yeah, I'm sure I'd be eating fish for every meal there...maybe some cornbread and garden tomatoes with it...I'd be in Heaven then. Nice fish...no starving now. Great video...don't make too good a videos...I'll have to sub yall too...lol Thanks for a great one though!!
Can't wait for part 2! You don't wanna eat buck, he would be old and chewy anyway. I've said it before and i'll say it again...
Buck is a legend.
Awesome video Liam Neeson.
Haha, I’ll pass that on to him...and I noticed, your name is also Buck
@@JimBairdAdventurer ha! Just a homage to my favorite animal to hunt and my favorite fish to catch!..I wasnt implying hes a legend because of the name lol. Only because he rolls with you on much cooler adventures than most of us dream of going on!
@@buckmusky2201 I know, and ya, he's a pretty well-travelled pooch. I believe he was named after the dog Buck who is the main character in Jack London's book "Call of The Wild"
Yeahhhhhhh!
Nice looking trout. Really enjoyed your vid and love the trout fishing. I hope to be going trout fishing in a few short weeks out in Colorado
Thanks a lot and I hope you enjoy your fishing trip
Play by Play Action.... Jim gently casts his line into the steam... Ted Follows with a Cast of his own.... PAUSE... Jim Yells... "FISH ON!... Get The Net". Ted Throws his pole to the ground without reeling in, gets the net and lands one nice Brookie... All while Shawn playes with his little brookie... Great First part to this series boys... Dennis, AKA... Canoehound
Found your channel through shawn james. I cant wait to watch your videos
Alida Hall nice, great to have ya here! Hope you enjoy the videos
So far i am enjoying them.
I'm watching from California, so jealous. Your dog was in heaven on that trip. Those brookies were amazing. Have you ever thought of trying some fly fishing while you are there? I think you guys would kill it with a fly rod. Awesome video!!!
Thanks a lot! I didn’t consider bringing a fly rod on this trip but I do some fly casting for Atlantic Salmon in my upcoming video and I did some out west this fall too caching a Sockeye, it’s addictive!
More Buck!
Right on
Thanks Dave!
YES, I have tired snapping turtle eggs, nothing to wright home about. First I tried to hard boil them, cooked for half an hour and wouldn't cook like a chicken egg, so I tried to roast on coals, they exploded! resorted to a scramble of a sort, texture was gritty and they tasted like a swamp.
Ha, that's awesome. Thanks for sharing that. I was thinking someone would comment on that with the outdoors people that swing by this channel.
@@JimBairdAdventurer Almost as good as fire crackers on the coals, safety glasses required. I have to mover a pile of dirt the turtles were laying eggs in, about 2 dozen in the nest, very rubbery shell, tough.
Great seeing Sean, too. Famous UA-cam guys together. And your new awesome blue canoe. Would be interested in what canoe Sean has. Maybe a Northstar Northwoods solo.
Thanks a lot, mine is a 15’ Prospector by Nova Craft canoe in their ‘Blue Steel’ layup. Shawn’s is a 14’ Prospector by Swift in carbon fibre
@@JimBairdAdventurer thanks for info and remembered how Master Shawn spells his name when I was watching 2nd half. But forgot to go back and correct.
Yay leshgooo
Trout, yum
YEAAAAAAAAAHHH!!! F@#%@#% awesome fish!! 👍👍🤘
That was a couple mins of authentic Baird bros. excitement there at the end haha....Thanks!
YES! It was AWESOME! 🤣
Thanks a lot!!
Nice fish, nice editing, enjoyed the video, looking forward to part 2. PS- I'm a cedar canvas guy but your canoes look really nice, especially on the ports. I kinda don't get the double blade thing but those canoes are special.
Thanks, it was my first double blade trip too, the canoes preformed well and I was able to carry mine on a portage that went on for well over a mile without taking a break, (mind you, I was a little slower on the remaining carries that day) the kayak paddle’s advantages are undeniable, thought I wouldn’t call myself a convert, but I’ll use it again if tripping with double bladers, or maybe even if I head out on a route that it would be a big help on, for example, solo upriver travel.
@@JimBairdAdventurer Thanks for the reply, understand about the doubleblades, I shared these videos on Canoetripping.net, .
Robin Lauer nice, thanks a lot!
Il be doing a spring trip on the nip this spring. Hoping to catch my first brook
Guaranteed you will

more oil when frying. coconut oil is good for the heart and withstands high heat.
Great tip, thanks!
cool :)
Thanks
Great video, Jim! Your editing was outstanding on this.
(What was Shawn drinking at 10:24? LOL)
Thanks a lot, looks like he was having a wee nip. We each brought a flask of whisky...for medicinal purposes only of course.
Raspberry Rock - Off Grid Cabin maple syrup
@@MySelfReliance Huh. I've been doing it wrong.
One fish? There are three of you!
"Electrifyingly delicious." That was my wife's nickname in high school. Or, so I have been told.
Hahaha
45 years ago i fished the crow river in the park with my father and white partridge creek
That is very cool! The Crow still has great fishing too. I paddled and fished it about three years and then continued on down the Petawawa.
the music @ 0:21 is so canadian I stuck my tongue to a frozen pole and then married someone I'm blood related to
Lol
Really enjoy your videos. What was your route on this one? Looking to take my son on a trout trip and don't want to get skunked leaving him with a bad impression. Any location advice would be great.
Shit! I used that same mepps spinner last weekend in Temagami. Not even a nibble. Nice fish! Love the way you cleaned it. Do you have a more detailed video of that ? Is it only brook trout you can clean that way ?
I think it’s just a Trout thing, so, all kinds of Trout as long as they’re smaller in size. Not sure if it would work with other species. I don’t have a more detailed version but I was kicking myself that I didn’t get a tighter shot on the part where I cut the bottom of the mouth.
Jim Baird - Adventurer hah you and me both. Hope to see it again. Would love to try that. 😊
My Olde Man, who took my brothers & sisters on many of these, would have loved you guys.
What might have pissed them off, however, was how much plastic is involved “”nowadays “.
Lots of plastic
Nice catch! Do you eat the crispy trout tail? I also enjoy eating the head cheek meat too..
Yes, I usually do. I cut off the tail here and fed it to my dog because the fish was to long. I cook it with the head on and I eat off the cheeks and other meat. I usually eat the eyes too but the brain is my favourite.
Great editing, and some truly humorous scenes! Your landscape is not that different from our Norwegian nature :)
I’ve been told that a few times actually. Similar in a lot of ways.
Hi men. I go there next week. Do u think what kind of fish i can catch in this time of year? Tks
Thái Nguyên Trần not sure what part of the park you are going into but I imagine Bass would be the easiest and most plentiful at this time of year
Lunch is over
What's the bug situation in Algonquin in May? Also, any tips on catching brook on civic holiday? Thanks!
7:37 a Stanley flask full of JD, 40 Creek, or Wiser's is an essential part of my backcountry gear. What's in yours ?
Kahlua....lol
Mines usually Turkey 101
Missed Ted’s whoops from Alone.
That was a classic one in this vid
Yes, classic. Looking forward to the new Alone in the Artic.
Kevin Kevech ya me too, it looks like it’s going to be epic.
Bookies dancing on thier tails eh .
Mike.
Yup lol
👍👍🤠
Thanks! This was a great trip
what frying pan do you have there Jim? I have a bugaboo but the bottom warped when I used it on a campfire.
It’s a GSI
