  • Algonquin Park Spring Brook Trout Fishing Canoeing and Camping WIth Ted Baird and Shawn James of My Self Reliance Ep. 1
    Watch Shawn James of My Self Reliance's video on this trip here:

    It's been a late spring and we had to push our trip back due to a late Ice out in the lakes around my house. The Kearney permit office for Algonquin Park is about a 45-minute drive from my place and Algonquin is accessed via a narrow river reached by long dirt, forest access road.
    I did this trip with Shawn James of My Self Reliance and my brother Ted and we brought my dog Buck along for the journey too. The point of this trip was to Brook Trout Fishing but by evening on Day One, we were worried the bite was off.
    Our Route would see us portage into the Nipissing River which we'd follow for a while before heading south and portaging over a height-of-land into Burntroot Lake and the Petawawa system which we ascended for a stretch before branching off into the Tim river which we'd follow up (and up) gaining 48 meters in elevation by the time we reached Longbow Lake. Continuing up the Tim we'd finish our trip midday on Day 7 after paddling 120 kilometres and portaging a total of 15,730 meters. The route can be done in five days but if you want ample time to fish, eight or even nine days would not be too many.
    This episode covers much of Day One of the journey and the ibntro gives a sneak peek of things to come, so stay tuned for more Algonquin Park adventure in the coming episodes!

    My gal and I did Algonquin North end for 11 days about 70 plus miles back in 1982. I was not so lucky with the fish. We ran out of grub. Rangers could not believe that we were able to pull it off with our minimalist packs. Had 2 really very close encounters with bears. And dang near got our tent trampled by a moose in the dead of night. Interesting ttip. Best

    Just watched Shawn’s vid. Hell of a stable boat you got there to be able to stand up through the rapids. That looked perilous at first...I’d definitely be getting wet if I ever try anything like that. Can’t wait to watch your version of the trip!

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  5 років тому +1

      Thanks, the old adage “never stand in a canoe” just isn’t true. Standing gives you a better perspective of a given Rapids as you approach....but it’s a little unorthodox to continue standing in your descent. Unless you’re poling. They stand the whole way. The Prospector is definitely stable, though it’s not ideal if it’s just stability you’re looking fore. The Prospector is a good combination between stability, maneuverability, carrying capacity and flat water tracking ability. Best all around canoe design.

    Nice fish, nice editing, enjoyed the video, looking forward to part 2. PS- I'm a cedar canvas guy but your canoes look really nice, especially on the ports. I kinda don't get the double blade thing but those canoes are special.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  5 років тому

      Thanks, it was my first double blade trip too, the canoes preformed well and I was able to carry mine on a portage that went on for well over a mile without taking a break, (mind you, I was a little slower on the remaining carries that day) the kayak paddle’s advantages are undeniable, thought I wouldn’t call myself a convert, but I’ll use it again if tripping with double bladers, or maybe even if I head out on a route that it would be a big help on, for example, solo upriver travel.

      That is very cool! The Crow still has great fishing too. I paddled and fished it about three years and then continued on down the Petawawa.

    Shit! I used that same mepps spinner last weekend in Temagami. Not even a nibble. Nice fish! Love the way you cleaned it. Do you have a more detailed video of that ? Is it only brook trout you can clean that way ?

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  5 років тому +1

      I think it’s just a Trout thing, so, all kinds of Trout as long as they’re smaller in size. Not sure if it would work with other species. I don’t have a more detailed version but I was kicking myself that I didn’t get a tighter shot on the part where I cut the bottom of the mouth.

    Nice catch! Do you eat the crispy trout tail? I also enjoy eating the head cheek meat too..

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  5 років тому +1

      Yes, I usually do. I cut off the tail here and fed it to my dog because the fish was to long. I cook it with the head on and I eat off the cheeks and other meat. I usually eat the eyes too but the brain is my favourite.
