  • This is the one you've all been asking for. Scrubs.
Ever since I started my medical training in 2007 all of my friends have been telling me that I MUST watch the TV show Scrubs but for some reason, I was always a little hesitant to start it. Maybe because I looked at medicine as a serious field, it didn't make sense to watch a comedy about it.
Well, now I am taking your advice and watching the first episode ever of the medical drama. Although I think this show is less of a medical drama is more of a medical comedy or satire. I can see why many medical professionals enjoy this show because working many hours in the hospital system can leave you feeling frustrated at times.
Now, as far as my opinion goes I have to be honest. This show is not as appealing to me as it is for most of my friends. I feel like they take easy shots at medicine and exaggerate a lot for the sake of humor (especially Zach Braff ) Not sure why, but the humor didn't land for me that often. I also think I would probably need to watch a few more episodes as the pilot is rarely the best one. Also, Zach Braff irritates me just a little a bit in his acting.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Watches Scrubs / Real Doctor Reacts to Scrubs. If you want me to continue making this medical drama review series please like the video and leave me a comment on which tv drama show or episode you'd like for me to review next. Love you all!

Scrubs was never claimed to be the most medically accurate show. It was claimed to be the most accurate representation of what new doctors go through. That was the whole focus of the show. Not the medicine, but the situations that newly minted doctors have to deal with and the effect it has on them emotionally.

All I thought about was how acetaminophen kills so many people from liver failure and interferes with many other drugs. Sure, seems like no big deal, but shit is serious. Great to see a "real" doctor shrug it off like that wasn't a good question. It's only the leading cause of liver failure so yeah let's just tell patients to take it no matter what, seems smart. The thing about Scrubs is that it starts in a relatively dark place, because it starts when JD and his friends are extremely anxious about their new job, and over time all of the characters in the series show a lot of growth. The main driver of the show is the idea that the experiences they go through working at this hospital really help them to change and become better people.

My wife is a nurse and she always says that Scrubs is the most accurate show on social mechanics and how people actually think of each other and treat one another in hospitals. She says, Dr. Cox - one of the most outrageous characters in TV history - could actually be based on a real doctor she used to work with, so you definitely get these sorts in real-life hospitals. But you probably need to watch the show for some time to get that, as it is very much based on the ways relationships evolve in these environments.

“Too dark.” Heh, heh, heh, oh you sweet summer child. Somebody trained after the residency work hour restrictions. Dr Cox is just all of our Ids unleashed. Everything you wish you could say but can’t. “Help me help you, help me help you, help me help you.” Honestly, though, it’s the patient death rate on this show that’s the most realistic. Yes, we do everything we can to extend life, but in the end, we will lose and the patient will die at some point. This show does an excellent job of exploring this cold, but at the same time oddly comforting reality. Our job really is to try to improve the quality of the time we are gifted with. First do no harm.

I think a lot of these medical shows paint this picture that Docs and other providers cowboy everything and nurses are the equivalent of extras in the background.
But anybody who has been a provider for any length of time knows how huge it is to have good support staff. Your job is so much harder if the help is not as good.
It can make such a huge difference when you have really good nurses, techs, therapists etc.
Most people in the medical field appreciate and rely on other people.
Yes occasionally run into those sorts of people who don't seem to be too cognizant of that but for the most part most of the people that I have worked with give credit where credit is due and don't disregard those support staff who make our job as providers easier.

Olha Michalak and taesthetic Vibe I am in the same boat.
I don't feel I'm any of those things either.
Even with a 4 year college degree, when people say "you're a smart guy" I always defer and say well I don't know about that. Wearing glasses seems to make one look smarter?
      I don't know.
I try not to think I'm smart as I have so much learning left to do.
      Anyway.
But what keeps me in the game is how much cool new stuff I learn every day.
I find, for me, the older I grow, the less I know.
So, I'm always hungry for new knowledge.
And consider keeping this in mind, as it works pretty well for me:
I always think about everything I have learned for that day.
And what keeps me going is this thought:
"If I learned THAT much TODAY?
Just imagine how much I'll learn tomorrow."☺
I feel a bit sad for those that feel they know everything and don't need or want to learn more.
I never want to stop learning, until they nail my coffin shut, and lower me into the ground.
Maybe then I will stop craving new knowledge.
      Maybe.
Something else I believe is true?
That you believe you are not all those things, is a strong indicator you really are all those things.
You just don't brag about them because it's unseemly. ☺
      It's not unlike being insane:
if you know you are and admit it?
      You're probably not insane.
But, if you ARE insane and DENY that you are?
      You are. ☺
(And trust me, I am crazy enough for at LEAST two people.)
People bragging about how good they are at everything, usually are not as good at anything, at least to the level they want everyone to believe they are.
(Guys who believe they are good in bed, typically are not at all good in bed.
Not that you asked, just as an example since we've all met those guys.)

      @Stettafire 5 років тому +13

+ toddvandell85 A bit of a long comment, but I totally get you. You go through your degree after mad panic, loose all sanity (if you ever had it in the first place) then are like, oh, I have a degree... now what? Then you go for a job because its the next logical step, and find you don't 100% suck, but you may be bat-shit insane and find it hard to talk to people, but that's ok. Because everyone is human, people make mistakes and making mistakes is ok. Just be you and keep learning and growing. You'll always encounter dudes who think they know everything, but there is always a bigger fish. It's better to be humble and realise that no one in the world is perfect. But you can get better then you are today.
Also, trust me I am bat-shit crazy. But being crazy is fine. Normal is a lie.

Yeah, if any of the shows he watched so far, this is the one to continue with. Because I agree, the first season is a bit dark. But I think they do it on purpose to kind of set a more serious tone. They were also probably a bit unsure of the direction they were going. But this show really finds its identity later on, and becomes much more light hearted.

You definitely need to watch more episodes, especially episodes where they lose patients. One of the main things the show got applauded for was for the concept of not always the perfect solution by the end of the episode, or by the time they find out what's going on, it's too late.
Some good episodes to check out: My Old Lady and My Five Stages are good.
There pairs of episodes that work well together lile My Lunch and My Fallen Idol or My No Good Reason and My Long Goodbye.
Also keep in mind when the episodes air and how vastly different hospitals can be now compared to back then. The show first aired in 2001, 17 years ago. Some of the more outlandish medical moments come from real experiences from the doctor they consulting for the show (the consultant is a friend of the show's creator). It gets the most praise for getting the personal lives of the doctors down so well

Unless you care about Cox and JD, uless you know Cox's normal demeanor and attitude, it won't hit nealy as hard. I don't think it'sthe sort of thing you can watch standalone and really get it fully.

one of the best things about Scrubs isn't just how the characters change but also the fact we have other professions at the hospital shown - the accountants the janitors the support staff - people that boost the doctors and nurses as they work. they also aren't just sketches of the character types but they grow as the hospital grows and changes and gives the show the feeling of a small community centered around helping sick people. because that is what a hospital is - a community.

I'm curious to know if you noticed in the opening theme that the chest x-ray was backwards. My dad loved this show but that always annoyed him. Eventually a few seasons in, during the opening, the music stops, one of the new characters walks in, and she flips it the right way around and says, "That was backwards, it's been bugging me for years!" My dad freaked out, he was so excited, he was like "Ugh YES I've been saying that forever!"
Also, like I already said, my dad is a doctor and everyone also calls him "Doctor Mike." So while you're basically the perfect man I can't find you attractive because that's all I can think of lol. I still love your videos! Keep doing what you do.

Scrubs is one of my favorite shows. You have to realize, this show came out quite a long time ago, and you admitted yourself that things used to be less positive in rounds and stuff back in the day.
But the harshness and darkness is part of what makes it a great show imo. It helps you empathize with the characters experiences.

As someone who has had over 100 surgeries/OSPs since I was 18 months old, over 23 years, I have these same reactions watching these shows.. I've spent years in hospitals absorbing everything I see and so much of what is on TV is laughably fake.. like magic defibrillators bringing *dead* people back, and doctors breaking laws in crazy ways, or discussing patients info in public areas (I love the awkward silence when you walk by talking doctors while they wait for you to pass out of earshot lol), and all the ridiculous hospital sex. Hospitals aren't sexy, everyone is tired, smell like farts and hand sanitizer, and just want to do a good job and go the fuck home and sleep!
You're absolutely doing the world a service, and doctors and huge favor by showing how it really is. I always wanted to be a doctor as a kid, but as I became an adult I knew I couldn't handle it. I'm a germaphobe, I'm terrified of needles (I hate those prickly phlebotomy vampires. Get a real job and stop stealing people's life juice!), and honestly.. I couldn't handle it mentally or emotionally. Doctors are straight up heroes. No joke. Even take away the life saving.. just the hours worked, years and decades studied, mountains of debt, working under absolute stress, working with a giant liability guillotine overhead, and having to deal with... _humans_ ugh. Heroes. That save lives, even with all of that weighing them down.

Scrubs and MASH are the only medical shows I watched all episodes of. I think what I liked about both of them was that despite the tendency to having stereotypes (the practical joker, the angry one, the one using sex as a tool, the clumsy one etc) , they still manage to make the characters believable. You end up kind-of-liking even the "meanies"

I think a lot of fans of the show know this but the filming location was a real hospital in the LA area that had closed down, so that's why the layout was so realistic.
