  • This is a review of the Porter Cable PCCK647LB brushless impact driver. I bought this tool to replace another Porter Cable 20V impact driver I'd used for a number of years.

    This tool packs a nice little punch. I have several Porter Cable tools, and they all work very well.

    In my 40 year carpentry career I have used and owned every PC tool out there and they are rugged and have always performed very very well.
    That said, remember that this is an impact driver, or not an impact wrench. The reason that many tool manufacturers only give you a two or three year warranty on impact drivers is because too many people use them as impact wrenches as shown in this video. Removing the Lugnuts on a wheel requires an impact wrench. Drilling removing screws and large lags in wood requires an impact driver. Always remember to use the proper tool for the proper job.

    I have had the 640 for over two years and have used it on several deck and handicap ramp projects. I got it in a drill-driver combo. I love the 640 and it drill 5” deck screws with ease. I have 4 of the black batteries and two chargers. The driver is the best tool I own. My only complaint is it will snap the heads of off screws when reversing screws out of wood. Very powerful.

    Great video, @DIY Apprentice. I think that most Impact drivers/guns achieve their rated torque specs after the hammer mechanism inside has broken in a little bit, so I wasn't surprised that this driver fell a bit short in the lug nut test right out of the box.

      Thanks. I may repeat this test with a different attachment and socket.

      Samuel Garcia The actual Porter Cable drill or the drilling feature of this tool? I don't have the Porter Cable drill. I thought about buying the full kit that includes the drill, but I didn't feel that I needed it.

      DIY Apprentice sorry I meant using the impact! Like driving in various screws or lag bolts and such...

      Samuel Garcia Ah, ok. I actually had planned on doing a demo with carriage bolts, but it slipped my mind.

    I just bought the 647 kit today. For $125 including 2 (small but not their smallest) batteries, it's a great deal. The batteries are around $50 each on their own. I'll be using 4.0 batteries with it but the ones included will be used for my drill. As far as the included charger, I guess they work ok. However, I prefer to use the dual charger (or even a full size single charger) that's in the bag available for about $100.

      Nice pickup. I love the 647. It has worked flawlessly since I bought it.

    I have the 641 and find it to be amply powerful for decking screws. I would consider the 647 as a bit of an upgrade and I wonder how it would hold up against higher priced Impact Drivers on the market. Kits ought to have higher capacity batteries for day long jobs. I also do automotive wrenching and would not use a battery operated impact driver as I have a larger impact gun that does this job very effectively.

      BigRed56 Yes, I prefer air when I'm working on cars. The 647 is nice to have around when I'm doing a relatively quick repair and I don't want to fire up the air compressor.

    I have the PCC641 that will easily remove lug nuts tighten to 100 ft lbs and when putting them back on just bumping them puts them at 100 plus ft lbs. The brushless one is much faster though.

      Hmm. I loved the PCC640 I had, and it had quite a bit of kick to it. I've used the 647 a lot recently, and it's been great.

      I also have a Dewalt but the Porter Cable is my go to tool. The PC was half the price of the Dewalt and works just as well. I love em.

    Is it normal if it sounds and feels like a big piece moves if I shake it a little back and forward?, it works perfectly but I don't know if it's normal.
    ?

    • @DIYApprentice
      @DIYApprentice  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, I believe it's normal. My impact driver makes a knocking noise in the head of the tool - tools works fine.

    People Never Ever use shitty standard sockets in place of proper Impact drive sockets. Auto Mechs back me up he used " No offense" a socket not made for impacts and I could see the gaps where it was already worn. Never use anything that isn't impact rated with your tires, you are taking you life in your own hands. This is why Snap on and Mac tools have a market. Yeah yeah they cost more than a small island but all impacts are compatible. What he used was not a impact, if not black send it back! He would have gotten way better results in, on and off. I think it would even shock him. This is from a old auto mechanic and Millwright. You get what you pay for. Never compromise!

    • @DIYApprentice
      @DIYApprentice  5 років тому

      Yes, I agree that an impact socket is normally required, but I did not have one on hand in that size. For what it's worth, the socket I used in this video is a Snap-on.

    • @krazyhorse448
      @krazyhorse448 5 років тому

      First off you now have a new sub, No one ever replies to tool videos from I have found and so I'm shocked and impressed. I've seen stuff and went omg no that is just wrong! Here is the right way and crickets. I try to help and maybe I come off as a know it all, but maybe a head full of grey, shows I have done it all and I know things others just don't. I work at Lowes now and if you want brake line straight NPT guess what? We don't have it, have you tried NAPA? and not the shit stores like Advance? or Autozone? No I thought you had everything. Well you guessed wrong. Ok now watch back, the gap around the upper corners of the socket. Energy lost. Just saying. Maybe I can help? No offense directed, my mind is 60 not 20 years old.
