Fun Fact! There actually was a Gaelic kingdom which held territory in both Ulster and the Scottish Highlands.
The Highlandeers are actually very closely related to the Irish, both being Gaelic together with the people of the Isle of Wight, however the Lowlanders are a different matter all together....

I always heard that the Highlanders were Scandinavian and it was the people in the south west that were Gaelic

It was more an invasion from Ulster into the west of Pictland, slowly taking more and more territory, until the conditions were right and a union was formed, known as Alba.
