I respect those who do hands free balayage but I'll be honest I find the foliage approach usually delivers best results for me. Blondor by Wella also grants me best lift. 👌 great video
Totally agree.
Honestly watching him do hair reminds me of when I do hair as a licensed stylist who never ended up working at a salon out of school and only does hair every once in a while. You know what to do generally because you learned in school, but you don’t do it full time so every time you actually do hair it’s almost like you’re remembering how to do it which is why his technique seemed to get better as he went on. That’s my observation.
Thank you! I always appreciate a good refresh video.
Respectful, informative, and entertaining as always. Great video, James.
Great video. Helped me even more. Thank you!
Hello James ! Good to see you again ! Thank you for this advisable video! I hope you and your family are well!
Hi Christos - thank you very much buddy always good to see your comments go to enjoy the video all the best James
Thank you James for being brave enough to make this video! I’m so sick of hearing people say “we’ll Brad mondo does it this way! Etc” my goodness. Great educational video! You are way more patient with Brad than I would be. Bravo 👏
brilliant video James! I love Brad also but you are by far the better hairdresser with great detail 👏
The video I was waiting ❤️I love both of you 🥰keep inspire
Thank you! Luiza
Thank you!!! You explained what I have been doing wrong and how to correct it. Very helpful information! 💖 💋
The difference between yours and Brad's tutorials has all to do with your respective target audiences. Your audience is comprised of formally educated stylist who already have a foundation of knowledge laid down, his audience is the common layperson who may or may not have any prior knowledge of hair styling. They're very different groups of viewers with very different needs and goals.
For instance, if you're instructing viewers who're using your information in a professional capacity, the details matter and it's really important that they're given a thorough illustration of what you're doing, start to finish. You have to produce a really high quality lesson to have value for those producing high quality work.
However, if your target is someone doing this on themselves in their bathroom at home, you're really just trying to keep them from screwing up their hair, aren't you? Most of the time it probably doesn't matter how thorough your instructions are, a lot of them don't even listen to half of what you say anyway. Yes, you always have to be accurate in the information you give out, but you're really just serving as an informal reference for that kind of audience.
Which is why I don't think the two can even be compared, you're vastly different channels with very different objectives. I think, for the level he's on, if he were to include any more information or go into detail any further, he'd actually risk losing them. I think he does just enough for the kind of consumer he's after.
Thank you very much for your extremely detailed comment I see exactly what you are saying with regard to the different styles of channel however I think sometimes when I watch videos from Brad I feel that even if you are directing your tutorial at a layperson the misinformation can be somewhat useful when set layperson ends up in your chair All of the free information or content creators create is wonderful however I think sometimes we have to make sure that we keep one eye on the realities of some of the recommendations made it that makes sense all the best James
I find myself in the weird position to not be a professional but I was practically an apprentice for three years. I was the only employee of someone who did home apts and parties and things. I was hired for the business side not hair things but I was always so interested in color she started teaching me so I stopped ruining my hair. But by the end of my time with her there were times she let me do the color ....I know it's wrong but I was like 21 and stupid. I should have gone to school since I love coloring hair Soo much but hate cutting....they should be separate like the anesthetician can be. Hey in still glad I know enough to learn from a professional since I have 3 daughters and my "skills" allow me to give them anything color technique they desire as long as I do a little research.....the point to all that was to set up my agreement with you. Brad was just absolutely sick of people ruining their hair at home and is trying his best to at least keep their hair in their head to be fixed professionally, the problem is people still skip half the steps in his oversimplified instructions.....and it's not the hard parts since I occasionally have trouble picking the correct toner but these people try and do a wolf cut and end up with two inch blunt cut too section
I think the video is relevant even for stylist because I’ve seen licenced hair stylist doing those mistakes he pointed in this video. The audience target comment is only half accurate. 👌🏼
"Your audience is comprised of formally educated stylist who already have a foundation of knowledge laid down, his audience is the common layperson who may or may not have any prior knowledge of hair styling." - totally wrong assumption. I have absolutely no knowledge on it, I just happen to watch his vids for my own learning at home, to do my hair better on my own. No I don't watch Brad, never did. I gotta say though, some hairdressers do things differently and have different "knowledge" due to how or where they were taught their profession.
@@acayette I agree. I'm not a hairdresser but enjoy watching someone with some years of experience and who can well explain what he or she is doing. I frankly wouldn't let a drama queen like Mondo near my cat, but that's just my age showing. Lol.
Great observations!
Tbh, I followed Brad’s tutorial and I got pretty perfect results. I watched all the relevant videos he put out to get my info, followed all manufacturer’s instruction, and was meticulous following the tutorial. I went from a 3 to a 9 on my tips and got some super blended color variation. Then I made it a blue balayage by slathering manic panic on top. It resulted in a perfect, even color. Tbh, I am his target audience. I’m home and self medicating a crisis by doing drastic fun things with my hair 😁 I love it, I get tons of compliments, and my hair is still healthy and soft. I’d say, not a bad tutorial. It must be annoying as a professional though 😅
James, I've got to say I love your videos and I learn more from you than any other. And you are respectful and nice. Would you please consider doing some toning videos. That is what I struggle with the most. Thank you ever so!
You are so professional. Your the Boss ❤️
Love this
Pharmacist here. Big fan of precision.
I’ve always wondered about the ratios used in mixing lightener/color. If you weigh it, you will have equal parts by weight, but it’s not equal parts by volume. A lot of products I’ve come across will use volumetric measurements so I’m wondering if the manufacturers of the ones who use ratios, but don’t specify whether by volume or weight have taken into consideration that many stylists use a scale; so they would need to advise how to mix with weight in mind.
Does that make sense?
BRADS THE BEST
Your videos are so underrated!!! They are amazing ❤ you’re the best 😊 the outcome that brad got is so boring 😅😊
You look good with your short hair, I love it!!!
Thank you very much James appreciate it
James you are such nice person I love you and I watch all your videos ❤ ❤️🇺🇸
In the God dammed world, 🤣🤣 almost spit out my coffee! Brilliant 👏
LOL I’m glad you managed to contain your coffee
I used to watch brad’s videos when I started learning about coloring/bleaching hair, and don’t get me wrong I did learn some things from him, but very soon I realized he has no more to offer and more importantly his attitude really bothered me, so I started watching other professionals.
Very recently I have found you and let me tell you I LOVE your content ( and you as well), you’re videos are much more educating and you are so humble and down to earth and super cool.
Thank you so so much. Love you lots.
The easiest way to get a perfect balayage is to get a good highlight and then 5-6 months later … TADA! You have a perfect balayage !
😂😂😂
Not much difference though James, it doesn’t even look like it’s been balayaged, great vid James as per and thank you for sharing ❤️x
Im your fan from Thailand
thank you very much
If it really needs to come off you can just dry wipe it off right?
Ha great video mate
Thank you mate
Hi James .both of you really great master but you are you best ..thanks for your advise I do agree with you about choosing the level of color ..🙏🙏❤❤
Thanks Frieda ✌🏻
I would be very upset if I paid for that! A good stylist is worth every penny & this is barely noticeable. Maybe it just his camera, but honestly it just looked a bit glossier.
After finding The Life of Hair, I got brave enough to have a caramel balayage on my very dark brown hair-I love it.
Guy Tang rose balayage lightener is really thick.
I am actually desperate to get my hands on some guy tang Colour I really want to give it a go
I think Brad was using big 9. I love the direct dyes and the copper red copper colors. Recently switched to Calura color and it's been great so far.
@@TheLifeOfHair I have used the guy tang cream bleach and really had a difficult time using it because it was very oily. It was odd. And the lavender smell is extremely pungent.
I do t believe he did the crown section by himself.. that looks professional
Umm he is a professional lol
@@ItsmeBish584 not really
Interesting
let me know that you think please
@@TheLifeOfHair sorry for the late response i did not see this but you were speaking the gospel truth. You were informative and entertaining. I have been following your channel since i was a baby stylist and that was 6 years ago and you have helped me grow so much as a stylist.(it also helped that you were redken trained and i was apprenticing at a redken salon so you were easy to follow.) Six years ago, i also followed brad and i unsubscribed at his channel after that whole snitchery debacle. It was a mess. anyway thank you for being so informative.
😍😍😍👍👍🙏🙏
The best thing about Brad Mondo is he uses *Guy Tang Products* If you are using anything else, well you need to figure it out and get on board.
Wth
I have all that done and then what,I am happy?
I like both you guys, but his results came out very nice. I followed his because I don’t understand all the technical stuff but I did cover it with a lot of bleach. It came out great.
In my profession, as you learn different techniques, you do what works for you and the patient to get the same result (such as giving IV meds or starting an IV).
TBH, this seems like a hairdresser trashing another hairdresser. If the results came out crappy, I would understand. But Brad’s results did come out nice.
I'm not a hair stylist and this may seem a bit judgemental but as a general rule I don't really trust someone of his estimated age who claim to be experts at anything. An alarm goes off in my head that just screams arrogant. I actually trust people a lot more who realise there is just so much to learn in this world, regardless of what industry they work in. He is obviously entertaining though.
Weigh your lightener and color!
Excellent analysis of a very underwhelming tutorial lol
Brad is obviously not a master stylist. My time is too valuable to waste on hacks. Which is why I subscribe to Life of Hair and not mondo.
Thank you James
Thank you Susanne Glad you appreciate it 🙏🏻
I agree with Suzanne.
@@lizabarbieri7840 🙏🏻 thank you Liza
Dont worry he has over 6 million subscribers.
I know Brad has a specific target audience of which I'm not a member, but he makes me tired. He's inconsistent with his information and technique. I've never made it through a full video and I've tried on a few different occasions in the interest of being fair. I'll pass.
~ APRIL LIPKE
Hi April thank you for your comment yes absolutely not everybody’s cup of tea as you say he has his target audience and he is doing extremely well
His framing was just a wasting of time
Brads target audience is non-professionals with modern to no experience that are DIYing at home so his tutorials aren't for professionals with experience.
No need to ever use the Lords name in vain ;(
OK, so my opinion will likely be disliked, however, it is mine, and it would be an injustice to lie to you, James, considering I do really think you are a really talented hairstylist, and teacher, and I follow you pretty consistently.
I am sad to see you do this video. Many hairstylists, on “the Tube” watch individuals doing their own hair, and pointing out whether it was good, right or wrong, and in what ways or steps they could do better. What I don’t see,(perhaps they exist and I just have not seen them) are hairstylists “criticizing” other hairstylists, because, to me, in all honesty, I don’t feel you “constructively criticized” Brad. I feel like you just criticized him, in a negative way, from the very beginning, when you made fun of how bubbly he is in his intro, to the end, where you said “some people don’t think he is a good hairstylist,” and then all that fell in between. It felt to me like you were saying that your way of doing things is the proper way, and his way is not, and that he still needs to develop his work, that you don’t even know if he does this in the salon, but it needs work.
That would be true of any artist, in any field. Brad works in a hair studio, AND he does UA-cam. In fact he has 7.4 million subscribers interested in what he has to say. Not only that, he has created his own hair line, including colors. I am not DEFINITELY not trying to compare you and Brad, because you two are both wonderful at what you do. I am subscribed to both of you, and I look at both of your videos, every time a new one comes out.
What I feel has happened here, even though I don’t believe that you intended for it to happen, is that, because you were very critical of Brad, you have led many of your subscribers to become so, as well. I believe this because of what I read in every comment below this video. The comments were filled to the brim with “James you are so much better than Brad,” and “you teach so much better than Brad.” It almost seemed like (Urgh! This is going to sound horrible) you wanted the attention that people were giving you, telling you how much BETTER you were than Brad. One of the posts stated my feelings the best. You seem to cater more to the professional hair dressers who need more help in these areas, but might be a little out of the hands of the at home, wanna-be-hairstylist. Where as Brad, caters to the more DIY people, and tried to help them to not screw up their hair to royally. He is happy and cheerful, ha jokes and laughs throughout the videos. He always starts the video by acting as if he is speaking directly to you. “Hello, Beautiful!! You look ravishing today!” He calsl the mannequin head “Miss Manny Quinn. He makes you laugh all the way through the video.
You, on the other hand, I can expect very serious content, with step by step instructions on how to complete a beautiful, natural hair color. Many times I feel scared to do the kind of processes that you do, because I don’t know how to mix colors, and I am scared to bleach, even though I have been doing all of this for two decades. I still feel like you have taught me so much by watching your videos, and I wish you luck, as you continue grow your numbers, through UA-cam, because others should benefit from your knowledge.
I guess what I am trying to say in all of this, is that you and Brad are amazing hairstylists in your own rights, and I believe both of you are phenomenal hairstylists with a great amount of knowledge to share with all of us, but I think one, watching another’s video, and then criticizing it, in not such a healthy way, and it is just below both of you. As I also said, many people may hate my opinion, however, but it is just that…my opinion, so try to understand that when you all read this and are shocked by what I have said.
Thank you, James, for all of your hard work! 🥰
Truly,
Amy
😢
Amy Just fyi Brad has done videos on James and also Guy Tang, Guy Tang! So I would disagree with what you’re saying
Hi Amy thank you very much for your comment I have taking the trouble to read it all I was not looking for any praise of any kind from anybody the simple fact was when I watch brads videos I find them to be slightly off the mark rather than concise and useful information that will give you very good results it’s just very vague and generic content and not necessarily very well practised.
I completely appreciate we are two different styles and as I said in my video I actually very much like Brad and what he has achieved however I feel like if you’re going to give people information then it should be concise and well practised Brad became famous for commenting on other peoples videos not for his hairdressing skills if you have watched previous episode where Brad explains that he previously worked for his father he did manage to pass his state board license but doesn’t know how. he will clearly realise that his hairdressing skills may be a bit subpar so I feel like when Brad starts giving out information about how to do hair he is merely catering to video content that is slightly out of his depth I did not mean to cause any offence I just didn’t want people to follow set instructions and be unhappy with the results. At the end of the day and I hope is that everybody has the hair that won’t whether they do it at home or go and see a professional best James
i can’t stand brad mondo
