  • My dad Jimmie opened his business "Jim's Automotive Machine Shop, Inc." (JAMSI Online) in January of 1983. After running a successful business for 40 years, he's easing into taking a step back and passing the reins to myself to take the business into the next chapter. His new shop building is the ultimate dream shop, complete with a two ton overhead crane system and a two post vehicle lift, perfect for a semi-retired farmer/machinist.

HVAC guy here, one simple additional item to consider is adding a couple wall mounted in duct fans run the duct vertical top to bottom and use them to pull warm air from ceiling and blow it across the the floor. Basically recapture the already heated air and recirculating to the floor.

Exactly my thoughts too. Heat does no good in the ceiling so the big ceiling fans would work wonders on the power bill and comfort.

      Sorry to hear that.
      I know the feeling.
My dad passed away when I was eleven. Becoming a machinist, mechanic, welder, fabricatior, and jack of all the other trades was grueling. Especially without having any family members in the trades. But, I'm learning more every day.

This comment is for your dad- thank you for your multiple decades of hard work and genuine dedication to the trade that you are in. I'm 33 years old and I learned from guys like you what a good job really means and what a good work ethic is. I'm glad to hear that you accepted nothing less than good quality and correct work for your new shop. You've got a good son there, and he is going to be few and far between by the time he's your age. It's a damn shame you worked hard for many years and had to put up with all the BS that you did. I'm almost embarrassed of my generation.

Lots of really good young folks out there. It's only because the bad ones get more press attention. I don't think things have changed that much it's just the perception that's changed. Great to see folks investigating in the future and pulling the USA into an incredible future 😊

Congratulations to you and your father! That's a beautiful shop. As a heavy equipment mechanic by trade, I know how handy that overhead bridge crane is going to be. Just listening to your stories gets me all fired up though I am so sick and tired of the supply shortages and no one wanting to work and all of the excuses… I deal with it on a daily basis, so I know exactly how you guys must have felt throughout this entire process

I’m watching the video of the new shop. You two started making fun of your tractor. I can go back to the 50’s having a real dream. My uncle was in radio his whole life in fact the station he was part owner was located in Wichita, Kansas. He hired Paul Harvey and gave him one of his first jobs. I use to listen to Mr Harvey almost every day and loved his farm reports. So my biggest dream was to drive a John deer tractor cutting hay and listen to Paul Harvey on the radio at the same time. Well it came true in about 1993 or 4. I was using a swather cutting hay for a close doctor friend of mine and I had the radio on and just happened to be the right station and then came “Stand by for NEWS! You talk about the flood of tears they almost wouldn’t stop. What a very special day for a city boy from Mississippi.
    Great looking shop!

The size of the job and the un-for-seen problems you faced, the mind boggles, Thank you guys for the walk around. Well done. I was in North Queensland Australia 1974. It was the wet season and that year that reached South and Brisbane was under water. I took on a job extending an 80 by 40 foot Battery Hen shed to 250 foot, mainly in timber open structure with a tin roof but we could not get bolts the right lengths and had to bore half way through the post and drive the bolt head in far enough to get the nut on. Everywhere was flooded, Inniafail had 3 mt of rain in 3 months, I could not leave as the Highway to Townsville was cut for months. I had never seen weather like that in my life, anyway we survived.

Excellent video, and very cool new shop.
It always surprises me as a 60 year old lifelong machinist, that when I hire an "expert" to build anything, I'm not exaggerating when I say I'm positive that with machining skills and common sense, I build a better end product than "experts in the field" .

What a fantastic shop. Your expectations of your contractors is the same expectations you require of yourself and it shows in your machining and engine builds. Those work ethics are disappearing these days. You two must keep very busy with your engine machining and building. Wonder how long it would take me to deliver an engine to you for a rebuild, hmmm, I-80 is ten minutes from me. You machine and build Duramax Diesel engines?

It’s always a great feeling to see the fruits of your labour come through.
The only thing you need is a large ceiling fan in the middle of the ceiling that will put that hot air back down on the ground where you need it instead of being 20 feet over your head.
The large fan diameter only has to turn on a low speed to keep the air moving slightly without cooling it. It will also keep the shop cooler during the summer heat also.
A ceiling fan can move a lot of air very quickly and is definitely worth looking into.

Mr. Bruce had a full mechanical shop, but I have learned so much from watching you. The only description I have for your work is professional! You are masters at what you do. Your talk about getting permits reminds me of Marvin Heemeyer and his problems in Granby Colorado back in June of 2004. So glad you didn’t need a bulldozer! And once again proof of using the right tools for the job. Any compromise on tools or materials always results it loss of time. Really glad to hear that you are keeping the old shop. Congratulations on your New Shop Guys!
I plan on building myself a new Shop in the next 18-24 months myself much like that one, similar in size and also gonna do the Overhead Crane as well.
There’s nothing like having an Overhead Crane that will go from one end to the other, and side to side in a Big Shop.
I tell ya what for a Shop Door of that size, it was very quiet when you opened it and closed it. I was very impressed.
When I get closer to starting my build I may contact you Guys and pick your Brains a lil bit if you don’t mind.
I am an Owner/Operator Trucker, but I am also a Welder/Fabricator/Manual Machinist. That’s what I plan on being my Retirement Job. I also plan on getting into CNC Machining. So that’s the main purpose for my New Shop Build, and a place to work on Dump Trucks when needed. As I retire I plan on selling the Tractor Trailer and transitioning into Heavy Dump Trucks where my Wife and I are just managing that Operation and have hired Drivers. I am a pretty decent Truck Mechanic, so as my Dump Trucks need Serviced & Maintenanced I will take care of that myself. Paying someone else to do that will break you up in the Trucking Business. I also was raised that you don’t pay someone else to do stuff you know how to do yourself. Even stuff I don’t know how to do, I will educate myself on how to do it while doing it.
I just subscribed to your Channel by the way. I can already tell that I like your Dad. We are very like minded individuals. I love the Block that y’all went with. It has a very nice look to it, and I’m sure that helped a lot with the R Value of your building.

Beautiful shop guys! I built a 40 x x 60 x 12, 20 years ago and used ICFs, insulated concrete forms. It is easy to heat and I have all my tools in it and can work inside. Love it!

Wow! I thought it was just me having issues with the trade-crafts!! I was rebuilding my 40’x70’ workshop in the same time frame and had the exact same types of issues here in the Reno, NV area. Perseverance pays off. Looks like it came out great!

Hey, where are there any good contractors that you found? I'm in Fernley and looking to build a shop this summer. Still looking at ideas as well. I wish he mentioned the manufacturer of that foam.

@@highlandermachineworks5795 After paying plumbers, electricians, HVAC, window/door, etcetera contractors, just like in this video, I ended up doing (and re-doing) 80% of the work myself with a helper. The only trades work I was (mostly) satisfied with is the concrete floor (Newt Concrete Construction in Mound House) and steel erection (North Coast Barns in Middletown, CA). If you need design/planning talk to Applegate Design in Sparks.

@Trotter Malone Thank you. I'll definitely make some calls to them. As of right now, I think Simpson steel seems like a good manufacturer to go with. But, I have a list of 41 more manufacturers/builders to go through. I believe that North Coast is on that list. Thanks again.

I JUST STARTED WATCHING THIS CHANNEL, and I am impressed. The relationship you guys have is awesome. The new shop is great, especially to me, as all my work gets done outside or in a small shed. I live in Arizona and that means im working in an oven if I can even work in the heat. When its 115 degrees out, you cant touch anything metal without gloves and its just a pain. But congrats on the shop, its amazing. And on other thing I like, I never hear any beeps in your videos. You know, the foul language being nbeeped out. No reason for swearing. I understood everything you said with out it. lol Keep up the great work guys.

I enjoyed this video more than any I have watched in a while!!! It is so awesome to see what you guys have accomplished. Thank you so much for sharing, makes me know I can still make my dream shop a reality if I never give up!!! I have started building a shop 6 different times and never got one finished because of having to move one to new places. I am getting close to 70 years old and still trying to get a dream shop built. Just yesterday I was talking and planning with my oldest son about how we wanted to build a shop. He has a pretty nice set up but not near what we want to do. Thanks!!!

    well done...
Looks nice inside too, bright & FUNCTIONAL. I am so pressed with the crane which has NO boundaries to prevent its use. It can be used right up to the walls on every corner, so well planned out.
My BFF (who is a Master Carpenter by trade) told me a million times; PLANNING saves time, no matter how much time it takes to plan, it will ALWAYS save time in the end. And time is dollars.
The other thing is... you BUY IT, then sell it to someone else who is going to be doing the same thing. The scissor lift, the Gun thingy, specialty tools you will ONLY use for that one job; anything you would have rented for a LONG time... Instead of renting it, BUY IT used, make it work for you & then sell it to someone else.
You made a nice shop :)
    Candie ^..^

Congratulations to you and yer dad! That's a really nice shop! And it's so nice to have something that you poured your own blood, sweat and tears into.. it reminds me of the small metal shop my dad and I built together years ago.. I'd love to see the machine shop in there, but all in due time I guess..🙂
Love the vids, keep em coming..!😉👍

What a beautiful, well thought out, and utilitarian shop! I am wondering why you didn't use insulated concrete form ICF blocks to build it. In any case, it has turned out fantastic! Great job!

Interesting how you had very similar problems to me here in the UK.
I ended up parting company with my project manager.
I was able to take a year out and pay myself the money due to him and keep things moving.
In the end it turned out even better as the workshop was never going to be big enough and It ended up being the start of a gentle slow down to early retirement and I now have a man cave, complete with overhead crane like yours, the envy of all my mates.

Can relate to the contractor bit. Either they are fantastic professionals and a dream to work with, or a total nightmare. The hard part is finding the good ones with an open schedule. I have the feeling you are the first kind for your own customers. Congrats on your dad's new shop! It looks amazing!

LMAO You said "bonus shop" and I spit my drink all over my screen. Most people would kill to have your "old" shop. Now to have this BEAUTIFUL shop as a "bonus shop" is hilarious. Truly is a testament to your (dad's) hard work for 40 years. I tip my hat to you sir.
