In today’s world finding a machinist that would be willing to do a fix like that is impossible. I’m glad to see there’s still some old school machinists that can think out of the box. The people in your area are very lucky you are still working and your son is learning from you. Merry Christmas and a happy new year
As soon as the cleaning guy says I have never done anything like this before, my interest went up immediately! I reckon this guy is so good, he deserves a promotion 😂 Thinking outside the box is real engineering at its best.
You have to admire a man not afraid to use “JB Weld” filler when prudent! Your son is fortunate to be learning the trade from an experienced machinist that can think “OUTSIDE THE BOX”! You’ve done well Obi Kenobi!
Excellent job, you had me a tad nervous drilling that big hole in the top. It looks just fine, the JB weld was a nice touch. Thank you, Jim and Mrs. Jim
@@Adam-vb2dx Heat expansion would have little or no effect on the repair on a cast iron block. Steel plugs would definitely loosen in an aluminum block since the metals expand at a different rate. Ask me how I know! Those tight plugs are not going anywhere.
Hey Mr Cleaning Guy, you should have no worries about keeping your job. I think all the subscribers have your back on this one. Well done! And to you and The Cook, awesome video. Great camera work, excellent narration. Love the very dry delivery on the sarcasm; perfect.
You and the cook did a great job I guess after 40 years of cleaning you pick up a thing or two. Congratulations to nick and his bride my they have a great life , like you and the cook
I used some JB Weld on an aluminum housing on a Compact Utility tractor. The bolt hole was broke out. Worked great and still is going strong 12 years later!
Great work by Mum and Dad. Static camera, mum on the 2nd cam, audio synced and cutting between shots in the edit. If they filmed and edited this all by themselves I'd give the cleaning guy and cook a raise 😉
Great videos as always. I can factually tell you JB Weld will seal a cracked #2 cyl end of the exhaust manifold, on a 1982 Ford 351W, and last six years. As an everyday driver in the midwest. JB Weld is amazing stuff.

Kudos to the Cleaning guy for demonstrating the initiative to do conpitent repair work. I worked in the automotive field for 35 plus years in both cars, trucks, and tracked vehicles in the US Army. His skill and expertise are to be commended for saving a cylinder head. That had issues that may have been masked by the casting issue before the engine takedown. 5 minutes ago I started watching the shorts, and thought I'd have a look at a full video. Mate, I'm glad I did, that there is how a tradesman fixes an issue, love it. Cheers for keeping the old iron working. 👌
As a former mechanic i was always amazed walking into a machine shop. Started watching the videos a few days ago with the cummins crank video. I love watching a true craftsman at work. That repair was epic, by the cleaning guy and cook no less. Keep the videos coming, i enjoy the content.
Absolutely brilliant, every workshop needs a cleaning guy and a cook to keep things running smoothly. I would have liked to see the vacuum test on the finished job.
I just love the way you go to another level and fix it! Most people would try to weld or braze that and end up making it worse. I've never seen that in a head either. Gotta be 1 in a million nice work! You need a raise... Happy holidays
I ran into two pipe 90s over the years with pinholes in them. One was hidden under a house (1977 or so) in a blind 90 deg spot and it took us a couple of days to finally get soap smeared around far enough to get bubbles. Lo many years latter I kept getting a faint whiff of natural gas in a boiler room and the good news was it was open though it took me some time to fine that one as well. But I was ready for it as I knew then it could happen. Well done Jim and wife (she had to be the inspiration!)
Good job to the cleaning guy and also to the cook. Way to hold down the fort while the boss is away. Lol. I like his decision on the head, seemed smart and long lasting. A lot of guys might have scrapped it

That you are skilled at what you do can be seen in seconds in your videos. That you are a nice family takes a little longer to understand. Wishing you all the best in 2023.
I reckon being a custodian for a machine shop for 40 years, you'd pick up on some useful tips. 😉 Well done, sir. You have earned your Master of the Custodial Arts degree.
I was trying to plug a hole in a fuel tank the same way with plugs and jb weld and ppl questioned the way and determined it would fail. Thank you. One of the best episodes ever btw.

Good job. I have seen JB weld used on 5.9 Cummins trust bearing and I was skeptical of the repair but it worked 100%. The JB weld was under the saddles of the trust bearings.
Cleaning guy my foot LOL Looks like a solid pro repair to me, definitely way more solid than that flawed casting area ever was even when brand new and more of a sure thing than any kind of attempt at cast iron welding that may have scrapped the head.
That is an easy braze repair area. Odds of cracking the head are half of what they were with this repair, the force those pipe plugs exert on the surrounding area is very high. Cast iron can be brazed and welded successfully. It is a common skill. If you do it wrong then yeah there is a chance of cracking. I would expect an engine machine shop to either be able to weld or braze cast iron or know of a reputable shop that can. The diesel engine shop that I cut my teeth in back in the mid 90's had a welder that we used who was in Cleveland Ohio, 90 miles from us, he was good and they never had a failure. If a customer had a cracked block and wanted to save a lot of money that welder was a safe bet, if he wasn't confident it would hold or be a good candidate for weld repair he told you so.
Nicely done. 30 years ago I would have used JB for a thread sealer. Today I'd reach for a Loctite product. Now I sit here and wonder if my older repairs have held up better.
That JB Weld is only good for up to 550 F. J-B Weld 37901 is good up to 1000 F. Better than that would be VersaChem exhaust sealer that goes up to 1500 F.

How would heat expansion affect the repair? Would the block and repair expand at the same rate?
