Ronin-S Problem: Joint Angle Drift and How to Fix It
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- The dji Ronin-S is a great tool enabling any filmmaker to accomplish smooth footage in a quality that before had only been possible with equipment that cost several times more. However, in a few cases this gimbal does not re-center correctly when pressing the trigger button twice, but ends up in a position where one or more joints deviate from their center. In other cases it re-centers correctly, but then deviates more and more from that neutral position while using it.
My Ronin-S showed a joint angle drift of some ten degrees after unboxing it. A joint angle drift of this magnitude is absolutely inacceptable. In most situations you don’t have the time to re-center the gimbal with the joystick - it’s way too slow and inaccurate. This issue caused me a lot of headache and an unpleasant experience with dji technical support, since not even they knew how to fix it. After several weeks back and forth with dji, their development division in China finally provided the information to fix this problem.
If your Ronin-S also shows a joint angle drift, this video will provide you with a quick and easy fix and thereby save you a lot of time and trouble trying to solve this issue by trial and error.
Cut that intro time in half and I'm sold
I have the ronin s for about 6 years now and it show these drifting issues, it's been used for more than 400+ weddings and gigs, and I thought it needed to rest due to this problem turns out it was perfectly fine and just needed a good reset and calibration, it has been working flawless so far, I want to say thank you. It wasn't been use for couple of months now since I got another 2 dji the rs and rsc but I landed this video and I think it should be use again instead of eating dust, thank you very much, subscribed.
This saved me from a huge migraine. I wish all tech support were as detail oriented as you.
THX. Always happy to read the video was helpful.
DUDE! Thank you so much for enduring all of that painfully tedious research! I have been searching for an answer to this issue for the last year or two now! I have tried so many different things to solve this including talking with DJI Support myself as well, which was hardly "support". I'm so grateful for your diligence and persistence!
I have this issue since I got my Dji rs2, it’s been over 2 years this has haunting me. I have googled for the answers for many many times, I am glad finally I found this video. Thank you so much for the sharing. It really helped!
DJIs customer support is almost non-existent. -Great video
Thanks Jeff! Always glad to help. :-)
I've bought my Ronin over a Website for professional gear. As i asked for warranty they gave my problem to DJI support which came back to me in one day with the solution. So I'm happy with the support at the moment :-)
thanks I do't have a that issue, but great that you are helping! UPDATE: 3 years later I've started experiencing this with my Ronin S, this video is now proving very useful!
Brilliant. So well explained and clear. Evidenced so there can be no confusion, even for the DJI folk, who seem so easily confused? Thank you. Subscribed.
Many thanks Stuart. Good to see that my work helps and is appreciated.
The camera I use is a sony a7 iii with a Tamron 28-75mm len. I balanced the camera, auto tuned it and did the balance test with the results saying excellent however it was drifting. After the update of the firmware my gimbal started this drifting. I have only had my gimbal for less then a WEEK! DJI should not have said you were the only one, because you are not.
is your ronin already fix by now? mine too is drifting
Dude I’ve got the same set up & notice drifting CONSTANTLY. Especially when I go from briefcase mode back to upright. I hate to say it, it gets the job done but the gimbal is awful @ maintaining stability.
Thank you for sharing this! You're saving me and others tons of time. DJI, please take note of this.
RESTORE GIMBAL SETUP/ SYSTEM CALIBRATION, it worked for me 🙌🏽😁
AUDIOJUNGLEEEEE
9:38 "and here comes the trick you've been waiting for..."
thanks buddy
I haven’t come across this problem but it’s very handy to now know this trick just in case. Thanks.
Many thanks for your positive feedback. It's good to see that my work is useful to you and other folks. :-)
I had different issue but this video is amazing
Thank you so much! You fixed some trouble I had when stabilizing it and fixing the joint angle tip. I also noticed that it worked better when auto protune calibrating it to medium.
Thank you Daan. Always glad to help. Have fun with your Ronin-S! :-)
Is there information still accurate with the new app? The app I have looks different with different options. I'm balancing the gimbal correctly, but its slightly tilted (not level) and keeps spinning.
Shame on DJI support
Thank you Sir for your tenacity and for this insightful tip.
I think it is the same problem I have now with my ronin Sc, i will try this. Thank you so much!!!
Same problem on my new Ronin-S (bought 09.07.2019). Lates Firmware v1.8.0.70 (2019.03.14). Always slowly drifts 11-15° to left after pressing twice the trigger.
Unfortunately this procedure did not work on my Ronin-S. Tried it 4-5 times without success.
Does it get back to neutral position after pressing the trigger button twice and only then slowly drifting to the left, or does it deift to the left on pressing the trigger button twice?
It centers first to neutral position and then starts drifting immediatly. After 10 seconds it stops. This happens in every mode - also selfie, flashlight or underslung.
@@andreaskugel8575 Don't shoot the messenger, but you might have to send it in. Seems to be an issue with the respective motor and/or how it is actuated - which works in impulses rather than contonously, which might explain your observation.
Thanks, I contacted the dealer and will send it back.
i had the same problem but fixed it with the lastest firmware version that I've made today 2019.07.05
I have this same issue right now! I was thinking get a new gimbal! Lol thanks for this! This has fixed it 😇🙏
thank you , it is work with me to solution the rolling problem after update the ronin to the latest version
I just got mine last week. I would double click to center and I just thought I was going crazy when it looked off center
woww, como diablos iba a saber de esto si no es encontrándome tu vídeo. Gracias.
Hmmmm, I thought this was about drift calibration but it wasn't. This is about reset calibration using joint angle adjustment. Drift happens over time and I experience it all the time and am trying to rectify.
Thank you!
well done for finding the solution mate. I am experiencing a different issue with my Ronin SC. It does not remain stable (locked)when filming..despite keeping pressed the trigger button it does not offer stability. have you exerienced something like that?
Big respect to you dear, never give up :)
I have a same problem but instead with my roll axis on my ronin sc, but you cant move the roll axis with the joystick. So how do I fix it?
In the app you can assign whatever axis you like to the joystick. After doing so you should be able to apply what I showed in my video to your gimbal as well.
@@photovideographer7230 I'll try that rn! Tha I you so much, I tried calling them and they had no idea what I was talking about!
Thanks! I have a different problem but this is good info to have
Thanks a lot .... you saved my $500
after solution maybe you massed it up again to make this tutorial? . .
BTW very helpful video.
i was searching for dji ronin s gimble safety video. what to do & dont. but there is nothing about safety. u can make a video on it
Very Much appreciated, many, many thanks and a sub👊🏾👍🏾
Thank you So much Please Make Videos More
Always glad to help! :-)
worked well thanks
I cant press on the alltitude. Either nothing happens or the Option obove it pops up. :(

thank you so much :)
Thanks for the very detailed and clear explanation. My issue with my Ronin S is that it consistently points slightly downwards and slightly to the right. I tried your solution but to no avail. In fact, after I press "OK" for the Offset Callibration, the "Offset callibration succed" notification does not appear and the gimbal will just return to the incorrect position once I try to bring it back to the reset position. I'm not sure if you have any guidance in this regard but any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
Hello Ewen! have you found a solution to your issue? my sister and I face the same one... any help would be greatly appreciated as well :)
@@auroradawn4985 Hey! Yes, I did find a solution and all is good now with my Ronin S. This is what I did:
1.Update your Ronin APP to the latest version.
2.Before power on your gimbal please ensure it has been balanced well.
3.connect gimbal to Ronin APP and do the balance test in Ronin APP.
After passing the balance test:
4.Go to Ronin APP>Motor parameters>Auto tune
5.Go to Ronin APP>Status>System calibration
6.Go to Ronin APP>Status>Advanced system calibration
Actually I noticed some drift in mine, but ignored, Now I will fix that for sure
Thank you, great video!!
100% helpful ! Thank you
Brilliant job buddy.
Thank you! Always happy to help!
I did this same thing!!!!! They don’t understand that the ronin s factory isn’t producing the ronin s at the same consistency of quality with each ronin. Very disappointed with DJI, I should’ve bought a crane
Thanks! Today this is helped me!
Hello! I have balanced all well, auto tuned, balance tested, but still does not center. I tried several times fixing joint angle by offset calibration. It says “offset callibration successful” but when I recenter it drifts and centers tilted. What should I do? Please help!!!
ı have other problem dji ronin s when ı open dji otomaticly my camera head go up up up slowly slowly and ı cant stop it
any help guys
same
you can run without a camera?
How did you balance it >
Also the balance test should not be done with the gimbal upright on a tripod
I have the same problem with my DJI Ronin SC! Thank you sir for your tenacity!
I have a feiyu tech 2000c gimbal & I can't get it balance or move at all I think my motors gone out
Thankyou for this incredible video - however, my roll axis on the SC is off and I cant seem to adjust this with the joystick to then calibrate the offset - any tips?
I tried the virtual joystick and offset the imbalanced roll axis and offset it through calibration as you explain but it doesn't seem to take even though says successful.
Many thanks.
I found a fix for this - if anyone has this issue with the Ronin SC, in the Status section of the Ronin app, find 'Horizontal calibration' - this fixed by roll axis issue!
thank`s a LOT!!!
You should get a job at DJI Support! Does the gimbal remember this setting, or do you have to do it every time you power on? Thanks
The gimbal remembers the new setting.
Great video! I have a question! If I hypothetically set the Joint Angle Pan to -10, Tilt 0, Roll 0, and then I click OK on the Offset Calibration, will the new Joint Angle Pan still read -10, or will it read 0? If it's the latter, does that mean that, if you incorrectly offset calibrate the Ronin the first time, you can't rely on the Motion Parameters' datum and have to instead rely on "how it looks?"
It should still say -10. But I wouldn't rely on the numbers in the app. Just re-calibrate the gimbal in a way that it points in the direction you want it to point to (e.g. straight forward in neutral position). Apart form that, you can re-calibrate the Ronin-S exactly as you like. Let's assume you are a vlogger and use camera and gimbal mostly with the camera directed to yourself, then just turn the gimbal's pan axis with the joystick by 180° and re-calibrate it in that position. That way it should always point to you. And when activating selfie mode it would turn forward, i.e. away from you.
Thank you so much
Thanks excellent
That did t work for me unfortunately. But I have the same issue.
Hello! So I’m having the same problem (I know this is an older video) but the ronin app appears to have been updated and won’t let me select joint angle. Any help would be great appreciated! Thanks!
Hi, Thx for the info. I tried doing this, but unfortunataly I do not get a confirmation "Offset calibration succeed". If i recenter the gimbal, the offset is back... So it seems that this does not work anymore? App version 1.2.10 - Firmware versin 2.3.2.20
Hi, had the same issue. I tried the system calibration too, but it did not seem to do anything...
Meanwhile the new and updated version of the app should offer the feature to re-center the gimbal.
DJi Ronin SC does the same thing. Very annoying.
I DID IT IT WORKED BUT I STILL HAVE A SMALL DRIFTING TO THE LEFT WHEN I RE CENTER IT . SHOULD I RE BALANCE THE JOINT ANGLE AGAIN ??
Yes! You can recenter as often as you want. If there is still a slight left drift after recentering, then try to manually put the gimbla in a slightly right angle position while recentering.
Photovideographer thank you for your help ! I really appreciate it !!
Thanks.
I would recommend looking into the camera lens instead of a monitor. It is very distracting.
If you/he need to read a script I recommend a teleprompter for your phone and an app for teleprompter... ua-cam.com/video/TPpIgbhJSPk/v-deo.html
WOW! Thank you!
My gimbal centers properly when I double tap the button to center. The problem is, when I want to take a hyperlapse and hold the button down to keep my gimbal straight it drifts off center while walking. Do you have an idea why and how to fix this? The gimbal is properly balanced
What happens, if you switch to another mode, before doing so?
Photovideographer so when I’m in my normal mode 1 and hold the button down it drifts just a small amount when I walk in a straight line a ways. In mode 3, I set the app to turn all the motors off so the camera just stays in place and the same occurs when I walk in a straight line over a period of time I can notice my camera isn’t centered with where I started off at.
@@arcanefilms9380 Then, I'm afraid, you might have to call the dji support.
Great video, I need your help with my problem if you can, I get my new DJI Ronin S, so I balanced the axis correctly. When I tried it was a clear vibration with it, would you help me please ?
That's weird! Typically a gimbal only vibrates, if it is not balanced correctly or one has surpassed the maximum payload, i.e. camera and lens are to heavy for the gimbal. What's the weight of your camera and lens?
Not sure what i am doing wrong, but I hold the buttom for 6 seconds and press ok and I dont get any confirmation from the app, and I tested it again and didnt work at all. Cant recenter this is frustrating
Hi Guillermo, what button do you press?
Please double-check that your Ronin-S and smartphone are connected. Then press the display of your smartphone where it says "Joint Angle" (don't press on the number right to these two words!). Just press on these two words for six seconds or - if necessary - slightly longer and then let go. Then a window pops up, which says "Offset Calibration". Choose OK, which finalizes the re-calibration and a pop-up window appears, which says "Offset calibration succeed".
@@photovideographer7230 Yes, I get the little window for offset calibration. and I press ok, but I dont get the "Offset Calibration succed" confirmation. And when I double tap the shutter on the ronin is still shifting in the bad position :(
Have you followed these steps? 1. Connect your Ronin-S and smartphone. 2. Press the trigger button of the gimbal twice (then it should try to get in neutral position, but falls into its joint angle drift). 3. Go into the app press "Configuration", then press "Motor Parameter" and then collapse the screen by pressing "More". 4. Look whether one of the numbers in the line next to "Joint Angle" shows a value of greater than 1.00 or smaller than -1.00. 5. If so, move the gimbal to the desired (neutral position) by using the joystick (at this point all three values in the line next to "Joint Angle" should be close to zero!). 6. Press "Joint Angle" for about six seconds and then let go. 7. The window "Offset Calibration" should appear, which you confirm by pressing "OK". 7. Then the message "Offset calibration succeed" at the bottom of the screen. 8. Now move the gimbal away from the neutral position via joystick and then hit the trigger button twice; then the gimbal should get back to the neutral position you have defined.
It's important that you press the trigger button twice, before you start this whole procedure!
@@photovideographer7230 Yes, Step by step, my phone is an OS, iphone, I started to think its the app that doesnt save the settings correctly into the ronin's software... This is sad
DJI customer service ranks as the #1 worst.
Hi, how do u do it the ronin sc2 ?
I have the same problem and I live in Europe as well. Really annoying!
can you write here what button must press, because i don.t understand in your video. Sorry
There is no button. You have to press where it says "Joint Angle" for more than six seconds and then let go.
@@photovideographer7230 THANK YOU SO MUCH
Same Problem here. Going to call DJI support on monday and if they can not help I will return the gimbal at the store. Why tf is this bullshit still happening on the new model??
hi. I tried it but in a update version of app with iphone 8 when I tap to joint angle and then press ok - nothing is happening, calibration offset is no appear, any suggestion?
You have to press for six seconds or more. Then let go and the message should appear.
I accedently find a solution - in new version of app appear a new fiture - top icon near bluetooth mark and there is a system calibration for drift issue
Great! This means dji has finally accepted that this is a real problem for many Ronin-S and Ronin-RS users and have implemented a solution to it. So far, they have always denied the existence of this problem.
The app does not work on android phones
This sounds like Nikon NPS tech support.
Hello I for a while now I been having a issue with my ronin-s and I don't know how to explain it but I have a video i wanted to share for ur help.
Hi Tonioo. Not sure whether I understand what you mean. Do you want to share a video from a 3rd party with me or do you want to share my video with others?
@@photovideographer7230 well I figure out that it continuously goes into motor pause but don't know why.
I did not work for me.
Do you have an Android phone or iPhone?
Photovideographer iPhone xs
Seems like iPhones or the dji app for iPhones is causing more truble than Android phones. Usually it's the other way round. Scrolling down a bit you will find another case where it didn't work with an iPhone. Have you followed my process step by step? What exactly does not work or at what step it starts not to work anymore?
My DJI Ronin fixed until I pressed the button twice and then it went straight to drifting again... what shall I do?
Have you followed the steps in the video in exactly the order presented?
Photovideographer yeah man
@@joshuatimmins2681 You have to bring the gimbal in neutral position first, and only then overrite its own calibration by pressing the button in the app for six seconds or more. Only if you get the confirmation by the app, you know its overwritten.
@@photovideographer7230 I know mate I did exactly that and it worked for a short while but then starts drifting again
@@joshuatimmins2681 OK, understood. After performing the steps in my video it works, but only for a while, then it drifts again. If so, your Ronin-S has a real problem as it doesn't keep the neutral position. This sounds like a problem of motor actuation (the motor are actuated by impulses), i.e. a hardware or software problem of the gimbal itself, that you cannot overwrite with the app. You might have to send it in.
For anyone interested, doing exactly this as those in the DJI Forums have suggested doesn't work. Best of luck.
agree with you. everything suggested in different dji forums including this video doesn't work.
i have uploaded a video on my; ronin-s problem.
This fix doesn’t work for me either. I’ve followed the directions. Pressed ok, however it does not say anything about “calibration” being completed. The window just goes away. I double click the trigger button and it goes back to its offset angle and not my calibrated angle. I’m also using the iPhone app. This sucks. Has anyone got any updates with this problem?
Have you pressed "Joint Angle" for six seconds or more?
@@photovideographer7230 I have. The box comes up which says it will calibrate once i press "ok" or i could choose "cancel" i press ok and the joint angle numbers go to zero. Buuuuuut when i double click the trigger button, the gimbal goes right back to its previous joint angle settings. Any ideas?
@@DamianBartolacci This may read like a silly question now, but have you manually moved the gimbal in a centralized position with the joystick before pressing "Joint Angle" for six seconds or more?
Photovideographer no it’s not a silly question. I did do that. It still doesn’t save.
@@DamianBartolacci Do you connect your Ronin-S to an iPhone or smartphone running on Android?
Vwry helpful!
thank u
You are very welcome! Always glad to help.

I have a horizon issue its not in level what can I do anyone had the same problem and find the solution?
The steps provided in my video work for all three axes, i.e. no matter whether you experience a joint angle drift on the pan, tilt or roll axis. Just follow the steps in the video.
Photovideographer I did it exactly how you show but when i press ok didn’t show the tab offset calibration succeed.
Photovideographer it works only for the pan but not for the roll. The horizob issue can only be corrected if this works with rhe roll
Encoders... Its the magnectic desviation.

doesn't work
For most Ronin-S users the instructions in this video work quite well. But, of course, I cannot guarantee that it works for everybody. A few people using an iPhone mentioned some issues. What do you use?
@@photovideographer7230 i was using iphone. but when i read one of your comments, i tried using android. and still won't work. :(

too long to watch, say the one sentence that we needed to hear.
way too much talking to the camera
