Impreza STI, Mitsubishi EVO, Polo GTI WRC look, Escort Cosworth, Focus RS, Octavia RS and so on. WRC 2 would be much faster if they weren't disadvantaged by the deliberate use of restrictors to ensure they don't regularly beat the WRC 1 cars ( even though they do sometimes). The WRC 2 cars run a 32mm restrictor, the WRC 1 a 34mm restrictor, a 5 speed gearbox, higher weight, very little aero, etc.
really informative video, ive been looking for something like this for a long time! I am also looking for amazing action pictures of rally cars and you seem to have a lot... where do you find them or can you send them to me? keep up the good work! :)
Isn't "weight including safety cell" kinda misleading? Because iirc they don't use a production chassis anymore but are built around that cage as "silhouette cars"
You have a very optimistic approach! I find it worrying that WRC had to give into so many demands from manufacturers for the Rally1 regulations and yet 2 years later there is no sign of a serious newcomer and M-Sport don't even have enough cars to compete for the constructor's championship :/
I try to have a positive mindset! I think with the political push for electric and sustainability, we've had a few years of crazy pushes for things like hybrid and electric, but with the big dip in electric car sales, I think we'll start to see them scale back. Toyota already has substantially scaled back on their electric push. If done properly, I think hybrid can be a positive move.
@@rallybeast I don't mind hybrid at all and even EVs could be fine if done properly. I just hope that WRC will see the same rebirth that WEC did but right now it doesn't look too promising.
FIA and regulation changes. With a harder suspension on soft ground the tire grip is sacrificed. This could end up in rally cars coming out of the road and hitting spectators.
Cut costs by restricting aero and banning center differentials, but im pretty sure those hybrid batteries and motors are WAY more expensive than some metal and carbon fiber. People need to realize that innovation doesn't happen by authoritarian regulation and legislation, it happens when you let people conduct themselves freely. If the FIA actually cared about innovation and a level playing field, they would take away almost all vehicular restrictions, but put a budget cap of 500,000 on every car. That way, the manufacturers are building to a price point, but they are free to build the car that they want - the best car possible. But instead, we get regulations and regulations. 1.6l turbo engine with a 36mm restrictor and a hybrid power unit, no more diffusers, reduced suspension travel, no center differentials... Wheres the variety and innovation there? It should tell you something when it's the WRC and theres no Subaru, Peugeot, Citroën, etcetera. The FIA is a joke.
Always nice to see good quality rally content so thx. IMO, Rally1 is mix of good and bad. The simplifying of drivetrain and cutting cost in half is great but the hybrid system is a marketing gimmick - it’s pointless, expensive and adds another part to break. With all the interest in trying to get on the F1 grid you’d think WRC would be able to find a way to get some new teams to join Rally1, often two or more drivers have trouble of some sort and we’re left with like six drivers in top class and that’s sad.
Very good point! And it’s a pretty complicated part that can break easily. Manufacturers just need to see marketing value to want to join. Unfortunately, they don’t right now.
@@rallybeast Rally seems to be getting more popular in the states if you ask me. People started watching F1 ever since that one show came out I've been seeing a few more people talk about motorsports in general, too
Excellent video, and thank you for making the argument that the last generation of WRC cars were the fastest ever made. People with a serious case of nostalgia tend to circle jerk Group B cars over and over, and while they were impressive feats of engineering at the time, they would be no match for a modern rally car.
There used to be many brands like audi, VW, Renault, Citroen, Peugeot , Mitsubishi, Subaru and even Opel... When I check the official WRC site now, there are only 3 brands, Ford, Toyota and Hyundai... What happened to Rally? ( I didn't really follow rally for the past 15 years )
What’s with so many industries not just racing forcing something no one wants in and when the interest dies and the industry begins to fail that claim nobody is interested. It’s like that meme of Eric Andre shooting Hannibal.
Very interesting, I had no idea they got rid of the center differential. I just guessed that the battery and electric motor added so much more weight that it made the car sluggish mid corner. But I'd still like to see a proper RWD class. Maybe they could attract more brands with a RWD coupe class, like BMW, Mazda and Porsche. Or even a non hatchback class, they aren't very interesting as something to buy.
They did remove active center differential (one controlled by hydraulics or electronics) to reduce costs and apparently there is possibly an old-style mechanical center differential, but reliable details are rare about this. Everyone seems to be confused about it..
@@IlkkaPrusi Hmm, does that communicate like an active center diff? Like every wheel gets a calculated power delivery or is it that you chose let's say 60-40 favor rear wheels and have the power differential deliver based on the front and rear separately?
I don't think they did remove the centre diff, not according to their web page, RWD is very slow to watch, as in very very slow, I raced both a WRC 2 and RWD, and wow, the difference is amazing, RWD is very slow out of corners
I think some of these restrictions make no sense. The differential is a massive step backwards. Everybody developed WRC cars with fancy aero, suspensions and drivetrains already, which makes handling better. Why get rid of it? Going full electric would probably be less hassle for manufacturers, because hybrid systems are way more complex.
The previous generation was closer to Group B, but the cars have been much faster than Group B cars for quite a few years now, thanks to advancements in suspension, AWD tech and engine mapping.

The safety regulations I get. All the others seem like they're trying to limit what these manufacturers can come up with. When you remove limits, you get groundbreaking cars like the rx-7 that dominated Lemans, but then was banned of course with new regulations. Regulations are good for smaller budget races, but those competing in WRC are industry titans, not Mom and Pop weekend racers.
It's such a shame we've havent' seen any car manufacturers really push for a road going "supercar" variant of these machines with a tarmac. We get hot hatches, but we never get the 'GT3 RS' of hot hatches. Instead, we get goofy cars like the 911 Dakar and the Huracan Sterrato.

There are rumors in the rally world about the return of some big names in the coming years. Such as, Lancia, Citroen, and, or Opel. Fiat, and Subaru,Private Audi? There would even be negotiations with Mercedes. Now to find the pilots?
Im ok with hybrid power. Its actually pretty slick as electric motors make gobs of instant torque. But generally i dont like hampering cars. The suspension and differential changes are lame. For feeder series i think rules like that are fine, but top level series shouldn't feature those limits.
there are a lot of mistakes in this video, WRC 1 weight is not 1230kg ( that is WRC2) it is 1190kg and 1350kg with both driver and co driver, gear box is six speed ( WRC 2 is five speed), WRC 1 runs an active centre differential ( WRC 2 does not)

WRC 2 would be much faster if they weren't disadvantaged by the deliberate use of restrictors to ensure they don't regularly beat the WRC 1 cars ( even though they do sometimes). The WRC 2 cars run a 32mm restrictor, the WRC 1 a 34mm restrictor, a 5 speed gearbox, higher weight, very little aero, etc.
i reckon in the very near future were gonna see a skoda rally 1 car that will put the wind up all other manufacturers
That would be amazing!
really informative video, ive been looking for something like this for a long time! I am also looking for amazing action pictures of rally cars and you seem to have a lot... where do you find them or can you send them to me? keep up the good work! :)
Yeah, shoot me and email at thebeast@rallybeast.co, and I’ll send you some.
"Welcome to Group B"
"What are the rules?"
"Go nuts"
Those were the days
Could you imagine what they would come up with these days??
Isn't "weight including safety cell" kinda misleading?
Because iirc they don't use a production chassis anymore but are built around that cage as "silhouette cars"
That's basically what the Rally1 cars are. They all have the same spaceframe with body panels attached to resemble the car.
Fantastic vid, need more UA-camrs like you !
Glad you enjoyed!
Highly recommended
Nice same for the soundttrack!
FIA and regulation changes. With a harder suspension on soft ground the tire grip is sacrificed. This could end up in rally cars coming out of the road and hitting spectators.
There have been some pretty big crashes with Rally1.
500bhp plus? That's insane!
Is that before or after the Hybrid boost?
That is with the electric motor. ICE is limited to 380 horsepower.
Makes sense, more in line with the previous WRC spec.
Still a far cry from the 1st Gen WRC spec of 300-330!
the lancia delta S4 had 550 back in the 80s!@@KashouWannabe
Well done 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I hope some of these innovations make it to the consumer quickly
Agreed! That use to be the essence of motorsports.
Great video man 💯
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
People started watching F1 ever since that one show came out I've been seeing a few more people talk about motorsports in general, too
Well done!
Thank you🙌
Excellent video, and thank you for making the argument that the last generation of WRC cars were the fastest ever made. People with a serious case of nostalgia tend to circle jerk Group B cars over and over, and while they were impressive feats of engineering at the time, they would be no match for a modern rally car.
That is so true! Group B started getting beat in the late 90's.
Damn I luv WRC Cape Town South Africa 🌍♥️
It’s the best motorsport!
Interesting information about rally cars. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
There used to be many brands like audi, VW, Renault, Citroen, Peugeot , Mitsubishi, Subaru and even Opel... When I check the official WRC site now, there are only 3 brands, Ford, Toyota and Hyundai...
What happened to Rally? ( I didn't really follow rally for the past 15 years )
Great question! Manufacturers have a tough time justifying the return on investment these days.
A proper RWD class would be fantastic and exciting to watch! It would even be great to see some RWD in the lower 2WD classes.
It definitely doesn't cater to driving technological advancements.
Wow, what a video!
Wow, thanks!
37 years later, group b is back in rallying
The previous generation was closer to Group B, but the cars have been much faster than Group B cars for quite a few years now, thanks to advancements in suspension, AWD tech and engine mapping.
hybrid on WRC cars is acceptable, but full electric will piss me off. we need that real engine sound from ICE.
100% agree!
I miss the impreza Burns (rip) used to drive 😢
Don't we all! He was a true rally legend and so was that car. Funny you should mention that, we actually have a t-shirt and hoodie with his car on it. You might like it! rally-beast-shop.fourthwall.com/products/subaru-wrc99
Soy fanático de las competencias automotrices, y eso me lleva también a aprender el inglés, en este video entiendo muy fluido el idioma, saludos desde Perú.
Thanks for watching!
U go Toyota simply the best I luv it Cape Town South Africa 🌍♥️
The safety regulations I get. All the others seem like they're trying to limit what these manufacturers can come up with. When you remove limits, you get groundbreaking cars like the rx-7 that dominated Lemans, but then was banned of course with new regulations. Regulations are good for smaller budget races, but those competing in WRC are industry titans, not Mom and Pop weekend racers.
Couldn't agree more!
which rx-7 dominated lemans?Im curious
Great video and information, I think is missing the VW in the competition and what's mean WRC.? Thank you for sharing...:))
It would be great to see VW back in the WRC.
Wouldn't more suspension travel make it safer to drive?
Hyundai with long travels but with short strokes sent Craig to the heaven…😢
Yes, and the complexity would too since they would have a larger working range.
they already have long travel suspension, any longer and you get too much body roll, and squat under brakes
@@恙恙 it was a pole fence that killed him, it was a very minor accident but pole fences are lethal
That would be so amazing! It was great back in the day when they would do legitimate road going race cars.
That intro is something else. What's the song used here?
Siren Screen by Ooyy
They're nice, but I'd love to see a return of the no-holds-barred power and complexity of Group B with the most advanced safety tech (and crowd control) of today
Wouldn't we all!
I love rally. What a sport. I will love an electric division, I think the speeds will be insane.
Hybrids kinda drive in a fun way tbh, not that it really matters because no manufacturers want to build them.
RIP Craig Breen 🕊
🙏
nice
Self driving car technology for the future racing 😂
lol it's just the co-driver in the car 😂
I hate that every racing class has become dominated by so many intricate rules. It makes the barrier of entry very high..
Also, in a racing series why the hell are they mandating hybrid EV crap? Remove that requirement and things can get lighter and/or faster
Awesome channel about WRC. Congrats! My favorite era was Group A.
Thank you! Group A was fantastic.
It's like a capacity yard truck. I drive it the same.
We want back Lancia
Have you see Landis these days? Lol
There are rumors in the rally world about the return of some big names in the coming years. Such as, Lancia, Citroen, and, or Opel. Fiat, and Subaru,Private Audi? There would even be negotiations with Mercedes. Now to find the pilots?
I haven’t heard about all of those, but have heard the rumors about Subaru.
Damn suck a good video tnx 👍🏻🔥
Happy you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Im ok with hybrid power. Its actually pretty slick as electric motors make gobs of instant torque.
But generally i dont like hampering cars. The suspension and differential changes are lame. For feeder series i think rules like that are fine, but top level series shouldn't feature those limits.
I can agree with that!
there are a lot of mistakes in this video, WRC 1 weight is not 1230kg ( that is WRC2) it is 1190kg and 1350kg with both driver and co driver, gear box is six speed ( WRC 2 is five speed), WRC 1 runs an active centre differential ( WRC 2 does not)
You obviously haven’t read the F.I.A. regulations because you are incorrect. This is about Rally1, not the past WRC car. And they aren’t called WRC 1 and WRC 2, it’s Rally1 and Rally2.
@@rallybeast We are both wrong, check this, file:///Users/martingrigg/Downloads/262_2023_wmsc_2023.06.20_jt.pdf June 2023
The minimum weight is 1260 kg under the checking conditions
mentioned below (and with only one spare wheel).
The combined minimum weight of the car (under the checking
conditions mentioned below and with only one spare wheel) and
crew (driver + co-driver) is 1430 kg.
When two spare wheels are carried in the car, the second spare
wheel must be removed before weighing.
>simpler tech to reduce costs
>mandatory hybrid tech that increases costs
HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?
It seems like they tried to cut costs in different areas to make up for the Hybrid unit.
2026, wish we could see Lancia returning to FIA WRC...
There are a lot of manufacturers that would be great to see back in it.
Recently been playing WRC 10 on my PS console. It is fire. Really exhilarating. 🔥🔥
Nice!
How to re charge the electricity ?
They can plug it in or use regenerative braking.
The suspension shouldn't got regulated by the FIA.
Just wanted to say I much prefer you narrating with your voice instead of the AI(?) voice used in the Rally1 - Rally5 explanation video 👍
Glad you like that! I'll keep using my real voice then🙌
A Rally 1 car costs around $600.000, so “cheaper” needs to be seen relatively.
It's cheaper that the $1 Million cost it was from 2016 to 2021.
Will these new rally beasts favour in country rallies like FMU .
It really depends on the regulations of the series.
The limit of amount of spare parts (transmission, engines...) is a very good thing to stimulate quality and durability in the world of cars where often is stimulated planned obsolescence, consumism and quality is often crap.
I don't like the limits on the cyclistics of the car (frame, differential, suspensions...) producers should be able to implement the best ideas and R&D to make better, more advanced cars.
Developping better hybrids is a good thing, awaiting safer EVs (🔥🚒🚑 litium 😒).
No need for monsters ☠️ with ultra high HP, focus on balanced cars with the best all wheel drive aspects.
Huge Toyota fan, durability and quality, best customer service and communication ever 👍
Agreed! The top level of any motorsport should be focused on advancing technology.
When it is so restrictive theres no chance to see any big innovation
And good innovations that are immediatly banned cant be further developed. Who knows what wouldve happened with rotarys if they didnt ban them
It’s crazy to think that the rotary was banned!
ROFL more bans than actual technical improvements
I thought FIA and WRC got a bit normal last 20 years ...
Id like to see audi join the game again
100% couldn't agree more!
Well made video, but goddamn the WRC really fumbled the bag here. They're moving away from what makes rally what it is, as a sport
People out here mad about emissions like they aren’t 1.6l that’s the same size as a Kia soul acting like there big block monsters
I love how much we talk about energy efficiency/climate impact/sustainability...
and act like these cars aren't towed across the globe by diesel trucks...
Gimme a break lol
Don’t forget flown on planes😉
I'm new to the sport. Why would full electric be a bad thing?
Good question! It's mostly because of the sound. It's one of the things that makes it exciting to watch. If it were electric cars, they would need to put a siren on them to let fans know that they're coming, which is as exciting.
World Rallly Car, I've just got it, lol....
safety cell… is it just an advanced roll cage?
there is no production car chassis anymore, just a tube chassis with panels on the outside to resemble a car.
It’s just another name for the roll cage, since it’s the area that keeps the driver and co-driver safe and protected
@@rallybeast thanks for explaining man
You mentioned fuel cell in your narrative - was this an inaccuracy or is hydrogen starting to be used?
No, it’s not hydrogen. Most race cars are required to have fuel cells rather than the standard fuel tank
How hypocritical can you get?
Reducing cost by eliminating ZYZ performance parts. But then requiring hybridization which is expensive, complex AND (spoiler alert) not great for the environment.
