I've always like the .380 as the smallest caliber I would carry as a pocket pistol on a regular basis. But most of the pocket pistols are single stack guns. The new Ruger LCP MAX gives us 10+1 or 12+1 capacity in a tiny .380 you can comfortably carry. But we also talk about two defensive loads, one of which I'm currently carrying and do some ballistic testing.

@Freedom by Me I'm pretty sure you might want to re-think that cartridge. While the xtp plus p is a fine , premium cartridge in 9 mm and up, in the 380. As with almost all premium hollowpoint ammo simply does not perform to the fbi standards in the 380. Fbi protocol 12 in. To 18 in in clear ballistics gel with 4 layers of heavy denim. Even the best premium hollowpoint save one that I just recently found out about( federal 99 grain hollowpoint), just doesn't consistently penetrate( most important), nor does it consistently fully expand ( damage , 2nd in importance). Please don't misunderstand, Hornaday, Federal, Speer, and other premium hollowpoint makers are all excellent, but not in the 380. Caliber. I would go with the lehigh/ underwood xtreme penetrator ( in 380. Only or if nothing else a fmj. The xtreme penetrator will give you consistently 12 to 13 inches of penetration in the fbi protocol gel and denim and do the damage of the best hollowpoint. The 380. Fmj will mostly just penetrate and do some damage but not like a hollowpoint.

Look into the Phlster Enigma holster chassis system. Those sticky holsters, I've never felt comfortable with IWB. There's nothing but friction keeping your gun from dumping out onto the floor. :/ Hard pass for me. The Enigma is a solid IWB platform which needs no belt and even no clothes to function properly. Perfect for your scrubs!!!

I went with a vedder full kydex pocket locker for my lcp max and its a game changer for me, yes its loose in the pocket and yes its already fallen out a couple times but both times i was wearing basically loose jogging pants. So those were 100% my fault, in normal pants with tight or regular pockets its never gone anywhere. I am going to put some kind of sticky rubber on the holster though just to make it that much more secure in the pocket. The nice thing about pocket draw is that its very inconspicuous. People have their hands in their pockets all the time for a million different reasons so its perfectly natural and it never puts people on guard. In a robbery or other bad situation where you have already been drawn on, you might already have your hands in your pocket. Its a sneaky draw if you work it correctly. I was also maybe gonna put a gps tracker chip in the holster if i can find one small enough to tape or glue inside it. Just in case it runs off again but im pretty vigilant about making sure its where it should be now having almost lost it twice. So there are some upsides and downsides to pocket carry for sure.

I, too, wear scrubs every day dealing with patients. I am considering ankle carry, even though my draw stroke is about 3x longer than my appendix draw. I shy away from any waist carry at work because a patient on the exam table or gurney has pretty ready access to it if they are flailing around, and happen to feel it. I have had patients grab pens and lights out of my pockets before.

I was NOT impressed by the 2018 era Talo Ruger LCP ll .380acp pistol. Ruger should have a better take down pin, field strip. The Ruger could cycle, fire .380acp rounds but I was not crazy over it. The LCP ll was easy to carry, pocket. I'd try this new Max .380 but I'm not a big fan of polymer frame Rugers. By the way for CCW, carry I used Underwood Ammo +P defense rounds.

Blew my mind that I could hit 10" plates at 25 yards repeatedly. I liked it so much I went out and got the Max-9 and a Holosun for appendix carry and that gun is equally as impressive. I have an OG gen 1 LCP and jumped on a Max when I found one. The only thing I miss about the gen 1 not carried over to this one is the pin on the rear of the grip which allowed a pocket knife style clip to be attached. Add a kydex trigger guard and clip it to my cargo pockets on the gen 1 for easy access right at the top of the pocket vs have to dig to the bottom of my pocket to find the Max without the clip.

  • @jagpilotohio

The not locking back issue is a know defect. Some of the mags are too wide at the top of the mouth and the followers are rising too high and LEANING to the right, away from the Mag catch lever and not pressing it up. My 10 round was fine but my two 12 rounders never locked back. Ruger sent replacements and the new ones lock every time.

The flush fit mag with mine locked the slide on empty with no issue, the 12rnd didn't. I took the 12 apart and fiddled with the spring angle at the follower. It was diving just enough at the front so as not to engage the slide stop. Works fine now.

My grandfather (old school 1940s - 1970s cop) taught me to shoot his revolver (S&W Model 10 "skinny barrel" - that I now own!) double action FIRST, Single action later only AFTER after I could do decent groups in DA. He was of the belief (like most cops in the revolver era..) that single action was OK for "fancy bulls-eye practice". but a "service" revolver was meant for double action primarily. While I have gone on to SA semiautos (There's NO price I would take for my old and slightly beat-up Browning Hi-Power...) I can still hit what I need to with a DAO semiauto (or "just" a revolver). I can't believe people think you CAN'T hit shit with one. 🤷‍♂️ For most of a century, cops had carried, qualified on and used "K" frame (and even little "J" frame) Smiths.🤦‍♂️ PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE! It's the shooter BEHIND the trigger, Not what KIND of operating system that make the difference.

Am I the only one who wants to see this offered in 32acp with 12rd flush fit and 14rd extension mags? Aside from the kel-tec P32, there are no modern lightweight polymer pistols offered in 32 & there is a large market of middle age to elderly women who want to carry but the snappy recoil of 9mm/380 is just a bit too much. The Beretta model 81 is a quality double stack 32 but it's heavy & too bulky to carry (in comparison)...

It is to me because the Ruger has 10+1 or 12+1. I just got my 12 round mags in the mail. Capacity for a pocket pistol is something I like now that I have the MAX.

    • @BigSulli24
      @BigSulli24 2 роки тому

@@Militaryarmschannel thanks for the reply. I agree capacity is of the utmost importance, but size is also up there for me. I’d rather have a gun with 6+1 that I am guaranteed to always have on me, than a 10+1 that could possibly have an instance where it’d be left at home or in the car due to size restrictions. The lcp2 sights are usable but definitely not to where the Max’s are.
All in all, if the Max is closer to the lcp2 size rather than g42 (which is hardly ever carried due to its in-between size of my p365 and lcp2) then it is definitely one of my next purchases.
MAC, if you’ve read this far, please do a gauntlet test on the lcp max! I’d love to see how the exposed single strike hammer does when exposed to the elements.

@@ohtehlolz That's good to hear. I recently started walking every morning and because of jogging pants started carrying my older TCP .380 vs my normal G43x. While the TCP has been a great little pistol with zero issues since I purchased 8 years ago I'm not real big on the capacity and the terrible milled in sights. The Ruger LCP Max changes everything when it comes to micro pistols with really no cons to it. The size difference seemed negligible to me when I handled one as compared to the LCP 2 or my TCP. The weight from the added capacity won't effect me since I carry IWB and never in a pocket, and the new sights are excellent as well. The trigger was a bit lackluster for me as compared to the TCP which is very close to the Kahr PM380 but I'm not a trigger snob so its not a deal breaker. My only real beef is the fact it only comes with one mag. Id.rather pay $20 more up front and get two right out of the box vs having to search for a 2nd 10 or 13 round one online. It would also be nice if I could find decent .380 practice ammo in stock for a reasonable price, but that isn't Rugers fault.

Great review. Everything said in this review is honest and accurate. I purchased the LCP Max on a whim as a cheap backup to my EDC, the Zev P365, but it has quickly become my primary carry when I am dressed up and don’t want to mess with the IWB holster for my Zev. I actually forget it’s in my pocket, as it is so light and flat with the small sticky-type pocket holster it comes with! It goes into shorts, gym shorts, or thin slacks or jeans without printing or being bulky, and with hollow points and a 12-round mag with pinky extension, I am able to get my entire hand on the grip and am confident in it as a critical defense pistol. They nailed it with this one.

You might notice that if you put a slight upward pressure on the empty magazine it will lock back just fine on an empty gun. When I discovered that I removed the magazine spring and stretched it slightly. This cured the problem whether the gun was empty or under live fire situations. I have about 500 rounds thru mine and that is the only ding I would give this pistol. In my opinion your review expresses exactly how I feel about the value of the LCP Max. I used to have this pistol. The extra grip width of the MAX really does help control the recoil impulse versus it's competitors like the S&W Bodyguard. It hides in your pocket virtually as well but it is still a little thicker with the extra rounds. I got rid of mine because I was not comfortable with the lighter trigger without an external safety. I would prefer a double action system with no safety, but these pocket guns can be awkward to draw and the last thing you want imo is them to have a light trigger like a striker fire. Just takes some training to get good with a heavy trigger, and in close range it doesn't matter. Good pistol though, I had no reliability issues.

I’ve had this gun since its release so I figured I’d share my two cents.
The sight picture and grip are immaculate. It’s so much more hand filling than the LCP II, for being only marginally bigger. The U-notch rear and BRIGHT front sight are perfect. The trigger could be lighter, but it isn’t an impediment to good-enough accuracy; it feels like a Glock trigger, with a little bit more over travel and noticeably stiffer break.
I’ve only had one potential malfunction: when firing, it locked to the rear while the magazine still had rounds. I instinctively pulled the slide back, and now I’m not sure if the round had barely hung up on the feed ramp or if I had accidentally activated the slide release. Whoops. Either way, pulling back on the slide fixed it. However, no other problems with feeding, ignition, extraction, or ejection. It has worked well with all ball ammunition, as well as the Hornady American Gunner 90gr XTP load which also penetrates 12” in gel.
I’ve added a Talon Grip, which tames recoil. The 12rd mag noticeably lessens recoil due to the increased leverage. With the 12rd magazine and grip, this is easily the flattest shooting 380 I’ve ever had. Which is more important than you might think, because it makes it FUN to shoot and practice with, unlike other pocket pistols like an Airweight +P or micro 9 that can feel like a chore to stay proficient with.
Another little nicety on the pistol are small “cocking wings” on the rear of the slide. It’s no S&W EZ, but I imagine those with reduced grip strength will find themselves able to run this action much easier than the other LCPs.
My example also has difficulty with locking back on an empty magazine when hand racking, but works reliably while firing.
I’ve been really impressed with this pistol overall. Even though I have micro 9s I could carry, this thing is very small and light, and easy to shoot well even in a time where training recoil control with live fire is quite expensive. This has become my new go-to recommendation for new concealed carry holders over a small 9mm that has substantially more recoil.

I have the same issue with the slide not locking back on an empty mag. I’ve found that it’s because the magazine does not set high enough into the grip. If I hold the bottom of the mag up with my pinkie it locks back every time. I’ve also noticed that every type of ammo I’ve shot through it, the spent casings all have the same dent and scuff on them. Next time I’d shoot it I’m going to mark the arid tat in of the ammo in the magazine (loading and shooting one round at a time) to see if they are catching something while chambering or ejecting. I can post some pictures of the casings I’ve kept on instagram if there is some interest to see them.
